PALACE THEATRE & OPERA HOUSE

There’s nowhere better to lose yourself this summer than the Palace Theatre and Opera House. With two jampacked programmes featuring an array of musicals, operas, ballet and more, there truly is something for everyone this season.

Five years after a record-breaking run in the West End, The Commitments (Mon 5 – Sat 10 June) are finally heading to the Opera House! Based on the BAFTA Award-winning film and directed by Andrew Linnie, this smash-hit production stars Coronation Street legend Nigel Pivaro and features over 20 soul classics including Try A Little Tenderness, I Heard It Through The Grapevine and Mustang Sally!

The Opera House will also play host to Disney’s timeless classic Winnie the Pooh (Mon 24 – Wed 26 July). Join Winnie, Christopher Robin and their best friends as they come to life in a beautifully crafted musical stage adaptation featuring stunning lifesized puppetry in a new story from the Hundred Acre Wood.

It’s time to escape to a world of pure imagination at The Palace Theatre with Roald Dahl’s Charlie and The Chocolate Factory – The Musical (Tue 11 – Sun 30 July). This specular show features all the memorable songs from the original 1970s film including The Candy Man and Pure Imagination. Every ticket is golden so book yours today!

It’s time to paint the Opera House green at Shrek the Musical (Tue 1 – Sat 12 August). Based on the Oscar-winning film this hilarious musical comedy features a ‘shrektackular’ cast and score, including theatre extraordinaire Antony Lawrence as Shrek and Strictly Come Dancing’s Joanne Clifton as Princess Fiona.

Get ready to head back to high school in the smash-hit West End show Heathers The Musical (Tue 8 – Sat 12 August). This black comedy rock musical based on the eponymous 1988 film sees Westerberg High’s Veronica Sawyer join the Heathers in the hope her dreams of popularity may finally come true, until she learns it might kill to be a nobody, but it is murder being a somebody…

Fall into theatre heaven with a brand-new production of the iconic global phenomenon Jesus Christ Superstar (Mon 11 – Sat 23 September). Directed by Timothy Shreader with music and lyrics by multi award-winners Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, Jesus Christ Superstar is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas.

Fab-u-lous darlings! Join Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood as the tyrannical Miss Hannigan in the legendary West End production of Annie (Mon 18 - Sat 30 September). With its Tony Award-winning score, you can look forward to hearing the unforgettable songs It’s The HardKnock Life, Easy Steet and Tomorrow.

Manchester gets it first again with the world premiere of the official Stock Aitken Waterman Musical

I Should Be So Lucky (Thu 2 – Sat 25 November)!

THE HALLÉ

The Hallé announces a major new season with innovation at its core

The Hallé has announced its 2023-24 season of concerts at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall which will be packed with stunning music, stellar artists, world premieres and exciting new collaborations.

Music Director Sir Mark Elder’s final season at the helm of the Hallé is marked not only by extraordinary music and world-class artists, but also by completely new strands of performance. Sir Mark opens the season with Mahler’s Ninth, the composer’s last completed symphony. Sir Mark’s concerts will form a series of special musical events including Ravel’s colourful Daphnis et Chloé with the Hallé Choir and another complete Ravel masterpiece – Mother Goose. Rossini’s Stabat Mater, an inspirational vision of Mary at Christ’s crucifixion, will be followed by a rare performance of the original version of one of Verdi’s greatest achievements, Simon Boccanegra.

May 2024 sees Elgar’s Enigma Variations in a programme that also includes the European premiere of Sir Stephen Hough’s Piano Concerto, performed by the composer. Elgar’s popular work will also feature in a special Family Concert, one of four the orchestra will present this season.

New concert strands include:

• Rush Hour kick-start your evening or avoid the evening traffic queues with hour-long performances of great music starting at 6pm.

• The Hallé Presents - a series of special collaborations with celebrated artists such as Nitin Sawhney, Jeff Mills, Jonny Greenwood and the legendary Steve Reich.

• Family Concerts where you can unlock the codes of the Enigma Variations or discover the orchestra with our newly appointed Assistant Conductor, Euan Shields.

Throughout the season the Hallé will be joined by some of the world’s finest artists, including Benjamin Grosvenor, Jess Gillam, Stephen Hough, Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha and Tom Borrow, the latest winner of the prestigious Terence Judd-Hallé Award and a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist. An impressive roster of conductors includes Daniele Rustioni, Roderick Cox, Chloé van Soeterstède and Kahchun Wong.

Hallé Chief Executive David Butcher said:

“We hope this season has something for everyone with its rich alchemy of musical experiences designed to surprise and delight. We’ve got stunning music, world premieres, new innovations and collaborations with artists as diverse as Thomas Adès (who we welcome as Artist-inResidence), Nitin Sawhney, Jess Gillam and Steve Reich. The season is particularly momentous in that it is the final season of our inspirational Music Director Sir Mark Elder, who stands down after twenty-four transformative years.”
