UK researchers have used microwaves to convert plastic bags, cartons and plastic packaging into a clean source of hydrogen.

The idea is to solve the problem of plastic pollution and create a renewable fuel source which can generate ‘green’ electricity.

Plastic waste can already be converted to hydrogen using other methods, and commercial facilities are being developed to transform the plastic. However, a new approach holds the promise of being quicker and less energy-intensive.

Peter Edwards at the UK’s University of Oxford is part of a team looking to reprocess plastic waste, with the UK alone producing 1.5 million tonnes each year.

Most existing approaches involve first using very high temperatures of more than 750°C to decompose plastic into syngas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon-monoxide, and then using a second step to separate out the hydrogen.

Edwards and his team rendered down the plastic into smaller pieces and mixed it with a catalyst of iron oxide and aluminium oxide. When blasted with a microwave generator at 1000 watts, the catalyst created hot spots in the plastic and stripped out the hydrogen – recovering 97% of the gas in the plastic within seconds.

The solid material left over was almost exclusively carbon nanotubes. The single-step approach has the advantage of just heating the catalyst, not all of the plastic, resulting in less energy use, as the plastic does not absorb microwaves.

The results hold out “an attractive potential solution for plastic waste”, says Edwards. Although only done at a small scale, using about 300 grams of plastic for each test, larger experiments are already being planned.

Hydrogen is also found in many organic compounds, notably the hydrocarbons that make up many of today’s fuels, such as petrol, natural gas, methanol, and propane. Hydrogen can then be separated from hydrocarbons through the application of heat – a process known as reforming.

The main objective was specifically to supply emergency power for the dry dock’s bilge pumps which must operate continuously to protect personnel working in the area. IN BRIEF FLUE GAS DESULPHURISATION SYSTEMS ORDERED FOR NIKOLA TESLA POWER PLANT Mitsubishi Power has won a contract to provide two sets of flue gas desulphurisation systems for a coal-fired power plant located in Serbia.

Mitsubishi Power received an order for two FGD systems for the Nikola Tesla B coal-fired station. The company previously supplied two FGD sets for the Tesla A plant.

The Mitsubishi Power FGD systems each have a flue gas desulphurisation capacity of 670 MW, with operation scheduled to commence in 2024. The two sets on order for the Nikola Tesla A plant will further reduce sulphurdioxide and emissions, and enable the plant to meets EU standards.

US$13.9M INVESTMENT IN A NEW MTU RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT FACILITY FOR GENERATORS Rolls-Royce has announced a US$13.9m investment in a new research and development building and the multi-phase expansion of its MTU power generation manufacturing facility in Mankato, Minnesota, USA. The project is a result of growth in the market – 2019 was a record year for the Mankato facility – and demand for increased product offerings resulting in the need for updated facilities, equipment and processes to safely handle customer requirements. It is also part of the ongoing journey of Power Systems towards the development of sustainable solutions.

The main portion of the Mankato expansion will be the addition of 28,000-sq-ft to the facility’s existing assembly hall, allowing for additional assembly lines and enhanced product testing capabilities. By expanding one of the existing assembly lines to accommodate the production of MTU gas generator sets, capacity at the plant is expected to increase by an estimated 25%. This will mark the first time these gas generator sets have been produced in the US. “Our MTU plant in Mankato has played a decisive role in our encouraging growth in the Americas. We intend to continue on this successful course by working hard to emerge from the crisis stronger than before. More consistently than before, we are pursuing our strategy of evolving from an engine manufacturer to a provider of sustainable solutions,” said Andreas Schell, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

“This investment in our Mankato plant will help us to meet the growing demand for energy in the Americas with locally-manufactured products.

Mankato will thus become an even more important part of our worldwide production network in the future,” Schell continued.

“Rolls-Royce has made significant investments in the gas systems business in terms of both products and people,” said Carsten Schrick, Director for Gas Sales in the Americas. “We have seen an uptick in gas systems projects as a result.”

TRANSALTA CONSTRUCTION CREWS TO WORK ON A 40MW COGENERATION PLANT FOR CANADIAN GAS PROCESSOR Canadian power generation developer TransAlta Corp. has plans to construct a new cogeneration power plant in Alberta for natural gas processing firm SemCAMS. TransAlta will initially take on all capital costs during construction of the $105 million cogeneration plant. The 40-MW facility will provide power and steam to SemCAMS’ Kaybob South No. 3 sour gas processing plant.

Kaybob South No. 3 is located in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin and takes in natural gas production out of the Montney and Duvernay formations. SemCAMS will acquire a 50% stake in the new plant when it becomes commercially operational sometime around late 2021, according to reports.

Dawn Farrell, President and Chief Executive Officer of TransAlta, commented: “We are very pleased to collaborate with SemCAMS on this project which will enhance their operational and energy efficiency through on-site cogeneration. This project represents an important addition to our on-site cogeneration business and we welcome SemCAMS as a valued new customer and partner.”

The steam and 50% of the electricity generated by the plant will be contracted to SemCAMS under a 13-year fixed-price contract.

TransAlta will sell the other half of electricity output into the Alberta Power market. The development of the cogeneration facility at Kaybob South No. 3 will eliminate the need for traditional boilers.

GELEC GENERATING SET INSTALLED IN BURKINA FASO, AFRICA A GELEC generating set has been installed in Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso to secure the power supply at a restaurant and family dwelling.

This 35 kVA generating set was installed to provide cover for the unreliable mains supply. With its integrated source inverter, it starts and takes over as soon as the outage occurs.

When the mains power is restored the genset also stops automatically.

Chosen from the PANTHER range, this 35 kVA genset is available in single-phase and three-phase versions and is fitted with automatic start-up in the event of an outage. It produces a stable electricity supply in both primary and back-up power mode. It has been designed to power houses, offices, farms, workshops and all kinds of electrical devices such as cranes, concert equipment, milking robot, fairground rides, and cold rooms. Combined with a lighting tower it can provide light for night construction work. This genset is equipped with a four-pole thermal magnetic circuit breaker with adjustable differential switches. It also features a DEEPSEA control panel and with an integrated automatic transfer switch system.

IN BRIEF FAIRBANKS MORSE STRIKES DEAL WITH GLOBE TURBOCHARGER Fairbanks Morse, a US manufacturer of heavy-duty, medium-speed reciprocating engines - sold under the Fairbanks Morse and Alco brands for power generation applications - has signed an asset purchase agreement with Globe Turbocharger Specialties, Inc., a manufacturer of turbochargers and parts.

The asset agreement includes all assets and intellectual property of Globe Turbocharger Specialties related to Alco, EMD, and GE diesel engines.

Fairbanks Morse said the move expands its service offering to include competitively priced turbocharger services and increasing the company’s critical parts inventory.

THE ENBALA CONCERTO PLATFORM IS BEING USED BY UTILITIES & ENERGY RETAILERS TO LEVERAGE DISTRIBUTED ENERGY RESOURCES - GENERAC NOW OWNS IT Generac Holdings Inc. has announced the signing of an agreement to acquire Enbala Power Networks Inc., a distributed energy resources technology company. Enbala, Denver, Colo., is a provider of distributed energy optimisation and control software designed to ensure the operational stability of power grids.

Generac said the Enbala Concerto platform is being used by utilities and energy retailers to leverage the power of distributed energy resources (DERs) to respond to the real-time energy balancing needs of power systems and energy markets.

Aaron Jagdfeld, chief executive officer of Generac, commented: “We’re on the leading edge of a remarkable transformation of the electrical grid, moving from a dated and centralised power distribution model to one that will be digitised, decentralised and more resilient.”

He explains: “Enbala is a proven virtual power plant and distributed energy resource management platform, and we believe their business model can be incredibly synergistic with our business. We’re proud to be at the forefront of the Smart Grid 2.0 with these new capabilities.”

With thousands of megawatts of residential and industrial standby power generation installed in the United States, Generac’s products can be leveraged in virtual power plant (VPP) and distributed energy resource management system (DERMS) markets, Generac has confirmed.

The Enbala Concerto software platform enables the connection of DERs to register and participate in distributed energy aggregation and control programs.

“Distributed generation is a critical next step for utility companies faced with meeting peak demand while also dealing with capacity constraints and regulatory restrictions,” comments Jagdfeld.

CUMMINS RECEIVES INDUSTRY’S FIRST GRID CODE COMPLIANCE CERTIFICATION FROM INDEPENDENT CERTIFIER ACROSS ITS LEAN BURN GAS GENERATOR RANGE Cummins Inc.has announced the completion of the European grid code compliance (GCC) certification across it’s lean burn gas generator portfolio, becoming the first company to achieve this independent certification within the power generation space.

The Cummins gas generators which have obtained the grid code certification, range from 0.5-2MW, including generator models from the newly released HSK78G and C25G gas generator series alongside some models from the established QSK60G series.

The capabilities of all gas generators have been tested, assessed and verified by an independent third-party certification body – DNV GL based in Germany. Over the past two years, DNV GL have tested the high-efficiency gas generator units running in grid parallel mode to ensure these products comply to all the latest stringent European and UK regulations around grid paralleling.

“Cummins has opted for impartial third-party certification as opposed to taking the self-certifying route as we are committed to provide high-quality and reliable products customers can depend on which are not only verified by Cummins but also certified by wellrespected partners, such as DNV GL,” said Mark Duda, Cummins Senior Gas Product Manager.

MAN SUPPLYING MGT TURBINES FOR CHP PLANT IN NIGERIA MAN Energy Solutions will install its first MGT gas turbine heat and power system in Africa, reports the company.

MAN will deliver about 20 MW worth of power to a plant supplying heat and electricity to BPL oil and gas facilities 30 miles southwest of Port Harcourt in Nigeria.

The three packages include the single-shaft MGT6000 gas turbine technology.

The order for MAN was placed by American EPC and equipment exporter Combustion Associates Inc. (CAI).

Together with Exterran Corp., the company is responsible for the engineering, manufacturing and installation of the overall project.

“We have seen the exceptional quality and performance of MAN MGT6000 gas turbines and are confident in placing our first order for them,” comments Mukund Kavia, chairman of CAI. “This is the beginning of a long-term partnership

between CAI and MAN and we plan to work together on other power projects in Africa, which is CAI’s key market.”

The MAN turbine technology will deliver around 20 MW of power, using dry low emission technology and natural gas as a low-emission fuel.

The system also features a specifically-modified intake air-cooling to deal with the high temperatures on site.

The set-up comprising three gas turbines trains enables a flexible load profile for the operator.

All trains are equipped with an advanced ATU Box (Analytics Telemetrie Unit), which is connected to the new digital platform MAN CEON.

IN BRIEF THE CITY OF ARNHEM GOES SMART WITH OPENREMOTE’S ENERGY MANAGEMENT IOT SOLUTION The City of Arnhem has selected OpenRemote’s open-source IoT solution to develop an intelligent energy management system using advanced IoT technology.

This new data management platform will enable the city’s energy managers to automate and oversee a distributed energy system combining solar and wind power installations, electric fleet chargers, cold ironing for ships and battery storage, through a powerful desktop and mobile application.

The solar and wind energy produced at Kleefsewaard, an industrial park located east of the city, is used for charging electric vehicles across the city as well as powering the ships docked in its harbor (cold ironing).

In order to maximise the use of local renewable energy, the City of Arnhem needed an energy management solution capable of predicting power generation, as well as optimising the vehicle charging and cold ironing, with the use of an additional energy storage unit.

A mobile application, built on OpenRemote’s open-source IoT platform, will enable the city’s energy managers and maintenance crews to evaluate the performance of all system components on-the-go, at any time or place.

The system is able to forecast power generation, consumption and carbon costs for the upcoming 24-hours.

These essential data points are used to define optimal charging and discharging cycles for an energy storage unit.

ABB STRENGTHENS RESEARCH INTO SMART MATERIALS WITH NEW R&D FACILITY AT CRACOW UNIVERSITY In co-operation with Cracow University of Technology, the new ABB laboratory signals another step in ABB Electrification’s ‘Mission to Zero’ strategy and commitment to driving progress and sustainability.

The Centre for Functional Materials and Advanced Manufacturing provides access to the latest technologies and delivers systemic research and development into sustainable electrification materials. The facility has been developed as part of a total $3m investment co-financed from EU grant funding, which aims to strengthen ABB Electrification’s business-led collaboration with universities and next generation engineers as well as research into technology automation and material engineering.

Amina Hamidi, CTO for ABB Electrification said: “This new facility is a demonstration of our commitment to make a positive contribution into sustainable R&D looking into smart materials and polymer technology. Seasoned and next generation engineers will explore how to integrate electronics and sensors into our Electrification products as we prepare our customers for the next big step in the digital transformation.”

Lecturers and students from Cracow University Technology, and ABB Electrification’s Smart Materials Re-search team, will use the ‘collab’ space to actively participate in internships and conduct joint scientific research, as well as learn the practical side of using smart materials technology in industry and buildings.

“Smart materials is one of the most important research topics in all material laboratories. Progress in this domain will largely influence the development of key industries.

The co-operation between ABB and Cracow University of Technology fits perfectly into the current needs and R&D trends,” said the Rector of Cracow University of Technology, Professor Andrzej Białkiewicz. Divided into four core R&D sections, it is one of the first facilities at ABB, and in Poland, to introduce induction heating assisted multi-component injection moulding cells for functional composites and structures, prototyping and sensor integration.

NEW DEUTZ ENGINE ASSEMBLY LINE IS IN FULL PRODUCTION IN COLOGNE, GERMANY Deutz reports that it has officially brought a new engine assembly line on stream at its site in Cologne, Germany.

The company said that on assembly line 5, the production processes for Deutz’s 2.2, 2.9 and 3.6 engine series now benefit from a new setup, making them more streamlined and increasing overall capacity.

Diesel, gas, and bi-fuel engines will be assembled here in the future, it said.

The new production line is located where the 2011 model series used to be made before those operations were moved to Ulm, Germany.

Deutz has designed the new assembly line to optimise the flow of materials. Fully automated guided vehicle systems, for example, are used to transport materials directly to the material staging areas at the assembly line completely automatically.

The materials for the workstations are then pre-assembled and moved to the appropriate stations.

The new final assembly line also helps to minimise process risks, the company added.

A high production rate is achieved thanks to a flowing system, enabling work to take place at more than 70 assembly stations where the pre-assembled components and modules are put together.

Deutz regards an end-to-end quality concept as being a high priority - this includes the monitoring of all threaded connection processes, the use of cameras to document critical assembly steps, and support from collaborative robots for individual processes.

The engines are subsequently checked using a cold test which is integrated into the value stream, explains Deutz.

The Earth’s magnetic field – known as the magnetosphere – protects our atmosphere from the solar wind - the constant stream of charged particles flowing outward from the sun. When the magnetosphere shields Earth from these solar particles, they get funnelled toward the polar regions of our atmosphere.

The most famous instance was the March 1989 blackout in the Northeastern US and up through Quebec, Canada which left millions without power for 12 hours.

New research has shown that equatorial regions are also prime targets. Areas closer to the equator still experience bad space weather – and its disturbing effects on power grid infrastructure. High above the ground in the upper atmosphere are fluctuating electric currents driven by interactions in the magnetosphere and ionosphere.

When the magnetic field abruptly changes, it can generate electric currents in conductors at the Earth’s surface – for instance, long pipes or wires such as oil and gas pipelines or power transmission lines. This process of electric current generation is called magnetic induction.

These electric currents are called geomagnetically-induced currents (GICs). The high-latitude regions are most susceptible to GICs because of the intense electric currents flowing through the auroras, due to the way the solar wind gets diverted when it hits the Earth’s magnetosphere. However, the entire planet can be affected to varying degrees. GICs effectively generate damaging extra electric current in power grid infrastructure through magnetic induction. Power grids, during large events, can end up taking on more electricity than they can handle.

CLARKE ENERGY AND INNIO COMMISSION JENBACHER ENGINE

CONTRACT FOR INDUSTRIAL POWER PLANT IN TATARSTAN, REPORTS SIEMENS

Clarke Energy and INNIO Jenbacher have announced the project completion and commissioning of a second plant at the La Centrale Laitière de Mahdia - Vitalait power plant located in Mahdia, Tunisia.

The installation of another INNIO Jenbacher gas engine has now increased the total electrical power at Vitalait’s facility to 4MWe. Having started operations in December 1998, Vitalait currently maintains a production capacity of 215 million litres of milk per year at its Mahdia plant. It produces a diverse range of products, including cheese and yogurt. At present, Vitalait has about 35 distributors throughout the Tunisian territory.

Clarke Energy, providing advanced INNIO gas engine technology, operates as a trusted partner to Vitalait for its energy efficiency projects. In 2013, Clarke Energy installed the first INNIO Jenbacher J612 gas

Siemens Gas and Power and PJSC Kazanorgsintez, one of Russia’s largest chemical companies, have jointly signed a contract for the turnkey construction of a 250 MW combined cycle power plant in Tatarstan.

The new plant will be fired with syngas, a byproduct of production in pyrolysis ovens at the Kazanorgsintez ethylene plant. Recycling the byproducts of ethylene production plant will help to reduce the environmental impact of the chemical production site.

Siemens reports that it will act as general contractor for the construction of the new industrial power plant and will deliver a SGT52000E gas turbine and a SST-600 steam turbine.

The scope of supply also includes the gas and the steam turbine generators, the SPPA-T3000 control system, and power distribution system equipment for the plant. Siemens will implement the project jointly with its Turkish subcontractor and construction company ENKA. Siemens also signed two service contracts, one with Kazanorgsintez for the new plant and one for a 495 MW power plant with Siemens equipment owned by PJSC Nizhnekamskneftekhim.

Seven years later Vitalait decided to boost its electric and thermal self-production by installing an additional INNIO Jenbacher J612 gas engine. The cogeneration plant currently consists of two INNIO Jenbacher J612 gas engines with a total output of 4 MWe.

IN BRIEF MOHMAND DAM PROJECT AWARDED TO VOITH China Gezhouba Group Corp and Voith Hydro Shanghai Ltd have agreed a generator supply contract.

VHS will supply four 200 MW Francis turbine generator units and online monitoring systems for the Mohmand Dam hydropower plant in Pakistan.

A consortium of China Gezhouba Group, a subsidiary of Energy China, and Descon Power Solutions of Pakistan won the construction contract. According to the schedule, the first unit will be commissioned in 2025 and all units will be in commercial operation during 2026.

Located in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province the dam is rated for a total capacity of 800 MW. It is the first flagship project funded by Pakistan’s new administration.

CONSENT GRANTED FOR EDF TO BUILD A NEW 299MW GAS PEAKING PLANT IN THE UK EDF Energy has been granted a development consent order by business and energy secretary Alok Sharma to build a 299MW gas peaking plant at its West Burton site in Nottinghamshire, UK. The company has also announced plans to build a 49.9MW solar farm near Bramford in Suffolk [pictured below].

EDF Energy invests in a wide range of energy technologies to meet the UK’s future demand for electricity. With the growth of renewable generation, the ability to meet short periods of peak demand and/or shortfalls in electricity production and provide ancillary services to the National Grid with flexible generation is

increasingly important.

Once the West Burton plant is operational it will provide generation as and when required and is not expected to run continuously.

At the Bramford 49.9MW solar farm in Tye Lane, Bramford, Suffolk EDF Renewables plans to mount solar panels on steel structures 3-4 metres (9.8-13.1 ft) above the ground.

The array will occupy about half of the 65 hectares (160.6 acres) available for development.

The UK developer, part of French energy group Electricite de France SA will build, own, operate and maintain the Tye Lane project.

HYDRO-QUÉBEC TO INVEST IN CARILLON GENERATING STATION REFURBISHMENT Hydro-Québec is to spend $570m in refurbishing its Carillon power generating station. The project’s main aim is to replace six generating units.

Civil engineering works willalso involve making adjustments to water passageways, upgrading electrical equipment and replacing the station roof.

Built during the early 1960s, Carillon is a run-of-river power plant, which is equipped with 14 generating units that have a total installed capacity of 753MW. The plant is said to be one of the important assets of Hydro-Québec’s hydroelectric generating fleet. Located close to the greater Montréal region, it supplies electricity to the grid during the peak consumption periods.

Hydro-Québec production chief innovation officer and president David Murray said: “The Carillon generating station is a symbol of our hydroelectric development and plays a strategic role in our production fleet.”

NINTH INTERTIDAL WIND PROJECT IN VIETNAM FOR VESTAS Soc Trang Energy Joint Stock Company, a subsidiary of Xuan Cau Company Ltd, has awarded Vestas with a major order for a 29 MW wind turbine project located in VietNam. Based in in Soc Trang, a province in the Mekong Delta of southern Vietnam, the Soc Trang 7 intertidal wind project will feature seven V150-4.2 MW turbines with customised towers placed on reinforced onshore foundations raised above sea level in the shallow nearshore waters.

Vestas is co-ordinating with Soc Trang to handle the planning and execution of the project, and will supervise the installation of the turbines, strategically

placed to exploit the full potential of the Mekong Delta region’s favourable wind conditions.

This will be Vestas’ ninth intertidal order since winning its first intertidal order in Vietnam in December 2019, a total of more than 1GW in turbines. The contract with Soc Trang Energy Joint Stock Company also includes an Active Output Management 5000 (AOM 5000) service agreement. This is designed to maximise energy production for the site.

With a yield-based availability guarantee, the arrangement will provide Soc Trang with long-term business case certainty.

Full site commissioning is currently scheduled for the third quarter of 2021.

HIN KONG POWER SIGNS TURNKEY CONTRACT WITH MITSUBISHI FOR A 1,400MW GTCC IN THAILAND

IN BRIEF CALIBRANT ENERGY TO OFFER EAAS SOLUTIONS Macquarie’s Green Investment Group (GIG), Siemens Industry, and Siemens Financial Services (SFS) have jointly announced the formation of Calibrant Energy.

This joint venture that aims to offer comprehensive onsite Energy-as-aService (EaaS) solutions at no up-front cost for its customers, which include corporate and industrial clients, as well as municipalities, universities, schools and hospitals.

Using an EaaS model, Calibrant will offer onsite energy solutions that seek to deliver immediate cost savings, cost certainty, resilience and low-cost energy grid augmentation. Its technologies will include solar, integrated solar-battery solutions, hybrid systems, batteries, microgrids, CHP and centralised heating and cooling.

Mitsubishi Power has signed a full turnkey contract with Hin Kong Power for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of a 1,400MW natural gas-fired turbine combined cycle (GTCC) in Thailand.

The facility, to be built about 100 km west of Bangkok, will house two M701JAC gas turbines provided by Mitsubishi Power. The contract includes a 25-year long-term s ervice agreement (LTSA), confirming that Mitsubishi Power is responsible for conducting maintenance of the facility’s gas turbines.

Power generated by the plant will be sold to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). Meanwhile, the facility’s commercial operation will begin firstly in March 2024 and secondly in January 2025.

Cutting-edge high-capacity gas turbines for 50 Hz power generation incorporating state-of-the-art technologies The J Series gas turbines from Mitsubishi are an integration of the proven G Series and elemental technologies for temperature increase as a result of the Japanese national project for development of 1,700°C class gas turbines. They operate at a turbine inlet temperature of 1,600°C. Developed as a model with a similar design, the M701J Series for 50 Hz power generation began commercial operation at the beginning of 2016.

The M701JAC Series gas turbines adopt air cooling for combustors instead of steam cooling. With performance equivalent to the M701J Series gas turbines, they produce a high level of operability including a shorter start-up time. The gas turbine unit is based on the basic structure adopted in the early 1970s which has accumulated a highly positive track record which spans at least 40 years.

ELECNOR BEGINS WORK ON NEW BIOMASS SITE IN GHENT, BELGIUM

Work has begun on a new biomass-fired combined heat and power plant in the city of Ghent.

The Spanish infrastructure company Elecnor won its first contract in Belgium early in 2020 and signed an €86 million contract with Gentse Warmte Centrale (GWC), a joint venture between Belgian Eco Energy (BEE) and Equitix.

GWC will process around 150,000 tonnes per annum of demolition waste wood that is not fit for recycling, sourced from industrial companies and households and processed to specification at sites across Benelux. The fuel supplier for the project will be Renewi, the largest waste collection and reprocessing

company in the Netherlands and one of the top two in Belgium. It operates over 2,500 trucks and over 100 waste sites in Benelux. Fuel for the project will be delivered through a combination of barges and trucks.

Elecnor, a global contractor, has been selected as the main construction partner. It will be supported by Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor (BWSC) who will provide the boiler, flue gas treatment and stack for the plant, as well as being the long term operator.

Located in a former coal terminal in the port of Ghent the plant will generate electricity and supply steam for nearby industries.

VENTOS DE SANTA EUGENIA PROJECT WILL COMMENCE IN JANUARY 2021 Construction is poised to begin at the Ventos de Santa Eugenia wind project site located in northeastern Brazil, according to the contractor Statkraft.

The company has agreed a a turbine supply contract with the German wind turbine manufacturer Nordex. The project, Statkraft’s largest in South America, will more than double its renewable energy capacity in Brazil.

The 519 MW project consists of 10 wind farms with a total of 91 turbines in the state of Bahia, located close to Statkraft’s existing Bahia wind power assets. Thanks to the prime wind conditions in the area, the project is projected to generate almost 2.3 TWh of renewable energy annually.

Construction will officially start in January 2021, with the first wind turbines expected to commence operations in September 2022. The project will utilise the Nordex 163/5.7MW wind turbine, the largest onshore wind turbines used by Statkraft to date, with a swept diameter of 163 metres.

IN BRIEF RENEWABLE ENERGY INTO THE GRID - ‘SUSTAINABLE PORTO SANTO’ Hitachi ABB Power Grids’ battery energy storage technology hs been deployed in Porto Santo to support the integration of renewable energy into the island grid.

Hitachi ABB Power Grids has teamed up with Groupe Renault and provided a solution which gives EV batteries a new lease of life and supports the integration of renewable energy into the grid, as part of the ‘Sustainable Porto Santo’ initiative.

Porto Santo, a Portuguese island in the Madeira archipelago, has a population of about 6,000 people.

The Portuguese government is keen to make Porto Santo the first smart, fossil-free island in the world and launched the “Sustainable Porto Santo” initiative.

A fundamental part of this approach is to increase the production of renewable energy. The challenge, however, is the unpredictable and intermittent nature of solar and wind energy.

Groupe Renault, Europe’s largest electric vehicle maker, has provided the island with a sustainable energy transition platform comprising of a full ecosystem of EV solutions based on vehicle-to-grid technologies, and an aggregation platform to manage the system.

HYBRID POWER AT SYMAMA GOLD MINING COMPLEX MEANS A 40% REDUCTION IN POWER COSTS A new hybrid power plant at the Syama gold mining complex, based in the south of Mali, west Africa, is about to celebrate its first delivery of power according to the current construction schedule.

Aggreko has taken responsibility for installing, operating and maintaining a 40 MW thermal power plant and a 10 MW battery storage system, with a further 20 MW of solar power planned for 2023.

Once fully operational the hybrid solution, which will be administered through a Power Supply Agreement, will reduce Syama’s power costs by an estimated 40%. Once all the renewable power sources are fully installed it will also reduce carbon emissions by approximately 20%.

Installation of the new power plant has been delivered in a two stages: * Phase 1 sees the installation of three Wärtsilä Modular Blocks, based on Wärtsilä 32 engines providing a total of 30 MWe, next to the existing power station and a 10 MW Aggreko Y.Cube battery storage system for spinning reserve displacement - this has already been installed. * Phase 2 will see the installation of one further 10 MW Wärtsilä Modular Block in 2022 and 20 MW of solar power in 2023.

The initial site infrastructure layout includes space to accommodate a fifth 10 MW Wärtsilä Modular Block, enabling the mine to add additional power capacity if needed in the future to support growth or expansion plans. The thermal element of the project is being implemented in partnership with Wärtsilä.

The Y.Cube installed at Syama is a fully-integrated, ready-to-install lithium-ion battery system, built on the decade-long expertise of energy storage pioneer Younicos, which Aggreko acquired in 2017. Housed entirely within a standard 20-ft container, Aggreko’s latest 1-megawatt (MW) unit can be delivered and quickly deployed almost anywhere, reports the company.

COMMISSIONING PROBLEMS MEAN A NOVEMBER START FOR JAWORZNO Polish energy company Tauron has delayed commercial operations at its 910 MW Jaworzno III coal-fired power plant project because of technical difficulties during the commissioning process but plans to restart operation in November 2020.

Tauron had previously announced that components at one of the plant’s boilers were damaged during trial operations in February, delaying commercial operations.

The damage occurred during the last phase of testing for supercritical parameters. Tauron and its partners in the project – Rafako and NJGT – have undertaken work to inspect the damage and determine the scope of work necessary to replace damaged parts.

The US$1.3 billion project will replace older units currently operated by Tauron at the Jaworzno site in southern Poland. It was initially expected to be operational in late 2019, but has been delayed several times since.

Only this month Poland’s largest utility announced that it would get rid of its coal assets and invest in renewables, becoming carbon neutral by 2050. PGE, which is majority state-owned, has revealed plans to transfer its coal mines and power stations to a new stateowned entity.

15 BERGEN GAS ENGINES BOUGHT FOR AUSTRALIAN MAGNETITE MINE

R

olls-Royce and its agent Penske Australia will deliver 15 medium speed gensets, based on the Rolls-Royce Bergen 20-cylinder B36:45 gas engine to power the Iron Bridge Magnetite Project in Western Australia, an unincorporated joint venture between Fortescue Metals Group subsidiary FMG Iron Bridge and Formosa Steel IB. Fine dried Magnetite, produced from natural iron oxide, is used in foundry as a sand additive to prevent surface defects of the casted metal. Another use for our natural mineral is for heat storage or as an iron source for iron catalysts.

The gensets are based on the new Rolls-Royce Bergen 20-cylinder B36:45 gas engine, which was introduced to the global market at the end of 2018.

The engine platform sets a new standard in power and efficiency with exceptionally low fuel consumption and emissions.

Through the Pilbara Generation Project, the RollsRoyce Bergen gas gensets will be integrated with a 150 MW solar PV farm and battery storage.

The hybrid energy system will be connected to the new transmission network Fortescue is building in the Pilbara, ensuring that the right amount of electricity is supplied in a reliable, efficient and fully environmentally-friendly manner.

GAS ENGINE SUPPLIES GREENHOUSE FACILITIES IN BELGIUM

B

elgian tomato producer Krikato has received a new, powerful MWM gas engine for the operation of its expanded greenhouse facilities.

The MWM TCG 3020 V20 gas engine was installed

by MWM Benelux B.V. and went live in June 2020. For Krikato, this is already the second MWM gas engine that is used for the production of power, heat, and carbon for use as plant fertilizer.

In 2019, the Belgian vegetable producers delivered a total of 889,845 t to the market. At 270,135 t, tomatoes are among the top performers among the vegetables grown in Belgium (as of 2019).

Thanks to the producers’ focus on innovation and efficiency, the Belgian tomato production is very successful.

To boost the tomato production, Krikato has expanded its greenhouse facilities from 1.2 ha to 1.7 ha. To ensure optimum operation of the greenhouse, the producer decided to deploy another MWM gas engine in addition to the MWM TCG 2020 V12 gas engine that has already been producing power and heat for the Krikato greenhouse since the establishment and go-live of the facilities back in 2012.

Recycling of the Carbon Dioxide as Plant Fertilizer Since June 2020, the two MWM gas engines have been generating a total of 3.5 MW of electrical energy and 4.2 MW of thermal energy for the power and heat supply of the greenhouse.

The SCR catalysts of the two natural gas-fired MWM gas engine enable the recycling of the carbon dioxide released with the engine exhaust gas. After the exhaust gas has been duly treated, the carbon dioxide is used for the organic carbon fertilization of the tomato plants in order to stimulate plant growth.

The heating of the greenhouses is the main cost driver, as it consumes most of the energy. Through the implementation of a combined heat and power (CHP) plant that runs on clean pipeline natural gas, the operating costs can be reduced significantly.

All natural gas-fired MWM gas engines can be customized for applications with heat recovery.

The gas engine drives a generator for the generation of electrical energy. At the same time, the jacket water and/or exhaust gas cooling cycles can be

routed through heat exchangers in order to transfer the engine’s exhaust heat from the engine to a hot water storage tank.

The hot water is stored and used for heating the greenhouses. Additionally, the carbon monoxide can be removed with the help of oxidation catalysts, and NOx emissions can be brought down to just a few ppm (parts per million) with the help of a urea-based SCR system.

Thereafter, the exhaust gas is so clean that it can be used as fertilizer to stimulate plant growth, thereby contributing to the operator’s profitability.

The MWM TCG 3020 V20 achieves an output of 2,300 kWel and can be used flexibly in different variants for applications with natural gas, biogas, landfill gas and propane gas.

With up to 45% for natural gas and 43.6% for biogas applications, the new MWM genset offers the best electrical efficiency.

The advantages of the genset are the reduced installation and operating costs as well as the safe and intelligent plant control, which contribute to improved efficiency of the gas engine. In combination with its high efficiency, reliability and performance, it makes it an all-rounder.

The digital control system TPEM (Total Plant & Energy Management) consolidates all genset and plant control data in a single system.

TPEM facilitates the control and monitoring, not only of the power genset, but also of the entire distributed energy generation plant. In most application scenarios, this eliminates the need for additional control systems.

Thanks to the digitized power plant control, the TCG 3020 V20 yields high performance, maximum capacity, and optimum plant availability.

Besides the reduced installation and operating costs as well as the secure, smart plant control, the TCG 3020 V20 features improved cost-efficiency.

Provided high-quality gas is used, maintenance intervals of up to 80,000 operating hours are possible until the next general overhaul.

EMERGENCY POWER FOR THE NAVANTIA SAN FERNANDO SHIPYARD, CADIZ, SPAIN

G

enesal Energy prides itself on offering complete, personalised and cutting-edge solutions. One recent example, accounced in June 2020, was a project the company designed and completed for Navantia and its San Fernando shipyard, in Cádiz.

A company spokesman commented: “We supplied a 1650 kVA genset for the shipyard. This was designed to operate at full power and guarantee power supply to all equipment located in the dry dock.

“The main objective of the project was specifically to supply emergency power for the dry dock’s bilge pumps, which have to operate continuously. No water can be permitted in this area as there are personnel always at work in it.”

The project involved the installation of the generator’s 1,500-litre fuel tank integrated in the baseframe along with a collection bund capable of holding more than 110% of the fuel tank’s own capacity.

The generator was established in parallel to mains operation with dual circuit breakers: one of them has been motorised for parallel operation with mains and one offers a manual load bank connection to carry out load tests with the genset already installed.

Located in the southern side of the country, Navantia’s Bay of Cadiz facility is the largest owned by the company (over a million and a half square metres).

Here, Navantia maintains one of the largest drydocks in the world with a capacity to build vessels up to 500 metres long and 100m wide, along with the two largest gantry cranes in Spain.

Navantia’s Bay of Cadiz centres are very important to the company. They are specialised in the construction of ocean-going patrol vessels, large military vessels, fast patrol vessels and special vessels, such as the Coastal Survey Vessels, Oceanic Survey Patrol Vessels, Maritime Action Ships, Combat Support Vessels, etc.

The Bay is an obligatory port of pass for maritime traffic between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

LAUNCH OF THE 150-, 180- AND 200-KW GAS-POWERED GENERATORS

ohler Co. is launching three new 60Hz and 50Hz gaseous-fuel generator sets providing emergency standby power for industrial, light commercial, and residential applications.

The new 150-, 180- and 200-kW generators provide maximum performance in a compact package, a differentiating feature that is frequently requested by specifiers.

The KG150, KG180 and KG200 units are EPA-certified and powered by a newly designed 10.3 litre, V-8 KOHLER engine with the ability to run on natural gas, propane, and dual fuel.

Designed to be a much smaller and lighter engine package, upgrades to the engine include a KOHLERdesigned intake manifold, exhaust system and oil thermostat assembly; front end accessory drive with a decoupled fan allowing for different speeds of the fan and water pump; and a one-piece flywheel.

“This project supports the strategic objective to have the same KOHLER-branded engines in all KOHLER generators to support a single platform making it easier for the customer and KOHLER in terms of common parts and efficiency,” said Amy Haese, associate product manager for KOHLER industrial generators.

“We also designed a much smaller engine than previous models, as well as shortened the enclosure and skid to reduce overall size and weight for installation flexibility.”

These generators provide users with the flexibility to select the appropriate gas fuel source for a specific application including natural gas (primary) and LP (secondary), and feature a dual fuel option with a patent-pending fuel reset box.

This dual fuel system enables the generator to switch automatically from natural gas to LP, and when sensing that LP is low it reverts back to natural gas. There is also a switch on the reset

box which allows users to switch from one fuel to the other manually without operation disruption.

For ease of installation, a fuel inlet connection is provided on the skid wall along with an oil drain connection.

Each of the KG generators feature KOHLER Fast Response excitation systems that deliver excellent voltage response and short-circuit capability using rare-earth, permanent magnet-excited alternators.

All functions of both the engine and generator are managed through two digital controllers designed and built

by KOHLER. Users have their choice of controllers including the APM402 and APM603.

Both of these options offer precise voltage regulation, a digital display and menu control for easy access to local data, seamless remote communication through standard protocol including support for remote annunciation, and building management system integration.

The newer APM 603 provides enhanced performance and monitoring features such as (+/.25%) voltage regulation, dual fuel control, expanded inputs and outputs, a larger seven-inch display, and the ability to parallel as many as eight generator sets.

The generators are available as open or closed units and can be specified with KOHLER-designed sound-attenuated enclosures with rear louvers.

The durable aluminum enclosures are also hurricane-rated and meet the most stringent and widely-recognised Testing Application Standards (TAS) within the Florida Building Code for wind load and projectile impact.

The enclosure’s design features an optimised intake baffle for better airflow and acoustics, and package options such as enclosure heater, damper actuators and LED and AC/DC lights.

SUPPLYING A NEW TURBINE FOR COLD POWER GENERATION

M

itsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Equipment Co., Ltd. (MHIMME) will deliver a turbine for use with the prototype of the Cryo-Powered Regas, an LNG cold energy use regasification system currently under joint development by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd. (DSME).

The CryoPowered Regas is a new initiative that aims to reduce the environmental impact of Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs) by utilising LNG cold energy – which up to now has been dumped into the ocean – for power generation.

The new technology is expected to significantly reduce the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of FSRUs during regasification.

As part of development, verification tests are scheduled to take place at a small, land-based facility.

In addition to supplying a power generating turbine to the facility, MHI-MME is also providing technical support toward the future installation of the turbine on ships.

MHI-MME has been providing support for energy saving on ships for some time, with a focus on waste heat recovery systems (WHRS) for large commercial vessels.

Needing a reliable prime power source for its sites in Central Africa, Zijin Mining turned to Sumec’s generator sets for a solution.

The Perkins 4016 range provides a 1850-2500 kVA power output and is supplied with cooling systems for either tropical or temperate environments to meet the customer’s needs.

Vivian adds: “With this installation, the features on the 4016 engine match the technical requirements of Sumec’s generator set. Both Sumec and the customer, are very satisfied with the performance of this Perkins

engine in the field.”

THE CHAIRMAN’S SUMMARY: KEY STEPS TAKEN BY AMPS TO PROTECT THE INTERESTS OF THE MEMBERSHIP Paul Aitken, AMPS Chairman, considers the trials and tribulations the Covid-19 restrictions have placed on the economy, UK businesses and on the day-to-day operations of AMPS. Here he outlines some of the key steps taken by the Association to ‘protect our interests going forward’, as he puts it. The key element of his message is that it is important ‘we support all AMPS members in these challenging times’. Don’t miss details of the 2021 AMPS events outlined below.

s we ease our way through the pandemic restrictions which challenge our businesses daily - the short-term outlook for the economy is not good, reports Chairman Paul Aitken.

Additionally, our industry will have to meet with a myriad of demands as companies navigate their way to a greener future for all.

As Chairman I recognise that the next 12 months will be extremely difficult for members, their employees and everyone connected with their individual businesses.

That is why, at AMPS we took steps to protect our interests going forward. As soon as the lockdown started and the potential impact became apparent we made key decisions.

• AMPS postponed all 2020 events to 2021 • Changed secretariats (£15k saving) • Reviewed all expenditure • Ensured priority work continued.

All the above has guaranteed that all 2021 membership subscriptions can be frozen at 2020 levels. The membership fees are of importance for the future of AMPS however it is important that we support all our members in these challenging times.

Additionally I believe it is important to communicate the above at this time so that we retain as many members as possible throughout 2020 & 2021. REACHING NET ZERO REQUIRES A RETROFIT REVAMP This month the ADE has launched its paper ‘Getting (retro)fit for net zero’, in which the Association focuses on the huge challenge of retrofitting the UK’s homes to ensure that they align with meeting the UK’s net zero targets.

The UK’s commitment to net zero by 2050, includes decarbonising the housing stock, which is amongst the coldest in Europe. Though the Green Homes Grant is a welcome down payment on retrofit investment, we need a step change to set ourselves on a path to net zero homes.

James Griffiths, author of the report said: “Making our homes fit for the future is a vital enabler of the net zero transition, but existing policy isn’t driving the required action. We must stop tiptoeing and start striding towards net zero through policy that better reflects our diverse housing stock, aligns retrofit with local energy planning and provides homeowners with long term clarity.

“We must seize the opportunity and build on the momentum generated through the green homes grant scheme to create a sustained retrofit programme that firmly sets us on the path to net zero.”

The paper sets out five steps which will align the UK’s approach to retrofit with reaching net zero. Key to success is setting targets which better account for the diversity of the homes we have that optimise local opportunities for heat decarbonisation and provide homeowners with clear long-term plans.

Guy Newey, Director of Strategy & Performance, Energy Systems Catapult said: “Energy Systems Catapult supports this important paper from The Association for Decentralised Energy. It provides a set of powerful recommendations to help tackle one of the major challenges the UK faces if we are to meet our climate change targets; how to decarbonise the UK’s housing stock.

“Ideas such as Local Area Energy Planning and rising building standards are essential if we are to unlock the innovations we need to deliver comfortable, healthy, low carbon homes that are affordable to run.”

To drive action the Association calls for ambitious policy targeting natural opportunities for upgrades, including the sale of a property or renovations.

EMPOWER LAS AND LEPS TO BUILD RESILIENT POST-COVID COMMUNITIES The Government should use the opportunity of the Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR) to empower Local Authorities (LA) and Local Economic Partnerships (LEPs) to lead the redesign of the built environment, and in doing so embed post-COVID resilience into our communities, according to the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE).

The business association which represents the professional services companies large and small who design, deliver and operate our national infrastructure, has shared details of its CSR representation which also calls for strategic infrastructure investments to bolster society’s economic, climate and social resilience.

Commenting on ACE’s representation, chief executive Hannah Vickers, said: “This year has brought into sharp relief the need for a more flexible and resilient society and the CSR is a great opportunity to embed this thinking across Government.

“We have put forward practical ideas to build resilience – whether helping communities adapt to changing post-COVID needs AND meeting the climate challenges of Net Zero through tangible proposals.”

On social resilience, ACE highlighted the need for local authorities and LEPs to be given a bolstered role as leaders of regeneration efforts through the use of imaginative planning and design reforms.

AGV50 FUEL METERING VALVE DESIGNED TO METER FUEL FOR TURBINES

The AGV50 Fuel Metering Valve is intended to meter fuel for turbines in the horsepower range of approximately 5,000HP to 60,000HP. This intelligent fuel valve includes a built in venturi based flow meter providing a very accurate calculation of fuel flow.

By providing an internal mass flow calculation, the valve is able to ensure accurate fuel flow even with changes in supply or back pressure or changes in ambient air temperature.

The main differences between the AGV10 and AGV50 are: - The physical size of the body is much larger on the AGV50. The flange size is a standard 2”SAE series 61 for the AGV 50 and the flow measurement technique used in the AGV50 is a venturi with DP transducer where it is a metering orifice on the AGV10.

- The venturi reduces turbulence which can affect the accuracy of the measurement at higher flows. The electronic control housings are identical on both the AGV10 and AGV50.

Light off can be achieved at a pre-determined flow which is ideal for a specific turbine not by ramping start flow through a range as is the normal practice with position based fuel valves.

The flow through design allows the AGV 50 to tolerate extremely dirty gas. If the pilot stage gas is filtered, the valve can even tolerate a substantial amount of liquids in the gas.

By choosing the optional embedded acceleration control the valve can work with either PLC or even with older analog control systems such as the CCC Black Boxes.

The CCC AGV valves greatly simplify on-skid wiring and gas plumbing and the 24vdc 1 amp requirement will not require a new high voltage power supply.

The Rs-485 serial port provides data via the modbus interface such as: Fuel Supply Presure, Differential Pressure, Engine Manifold Pressure , Measured Fuel Flow, and various other On Board information available for control and diagnostics.
