The UAE has integrated energy efficiency into its broader sustainability goals and launched its National Demand Side Management (DSM) Programme, reports Sharif Al Olama Undersecretary for Energy & Petroleum Affairs, Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure of the United Arab Emirates Energy efficiency is central to the UAE’s sustainability strategy, driving both resource optimisation and long-term economic growth. By incorporating energy efficiency into its national framework, the UAE is reducing consumption and environmental impact, while positioning itself as a leader in the global energy transition, says a recently released report authored by Sharif Al Olama.
“The UAE’s National Demand Side Management (DSM) Programme involves focussing on key sectors such as the built environment, agriculture, industry and transport. The built environment is one of the largest energy consumers in the UAE, making it a key focus area for achieving maximum impact in energy efficiency,” says Al Olama.
Recognising this, the UAE’s DSM programme strategically targets this sector by applying green building codes and retrofitting existing structures to significantly reduce energy consumption.
These measures align with the country’s goal of optimising urban infrastructure for sustainability.
“
THE
UAE
HAS
NOW INTEGRATED ENERGY EFFICIENCY INTO ITS BROADER SUSTAINABILITY GOALS.”
For instance, retrofitting 423 UAE federal buildings as part of the Government Buildings Retrofit Project, financed entirely through private sector investments, highlights the strength of public-private collaboration.
The UAE’s National DSM Programme has achieved significant progress, with initial reductions of 11.2 million tonnes of CO2 by 2023 but challenges remain in fully scaling energy-efficient technologies in sectors like transport where high costs, limited infrastructure and regulatory gaps have slowed adoption.
Focused on energy efficiency through to the year 2050, the programme aims for significant reductions in electricity use, while aligning with the UAE Net Zero Strategy to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
Al Olama concludes: “To create a more cohesive national strategy for the UAE the programme should also play a role in meeting the UAE’s near-term climate targets, including the 31% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. This would further integrate these short-term goals and enhance financial mechanisms to support decarbonisation across all sectors.”

Rolls-Royce has commissioned ten mtu gas gensets in the Beheira province in northern Egypt to supply the Egyptian Wood Technology Company’s (WOTECH) production plant with electricity.
Since there is no access to the public grid, WOTECH relies entirely on the 20-cylinder mtu gas gensets, which together have a total output of 25 megawatts.
The factory produces medium-density fibreboard (MDF) from rice straw, which is used for furniture and buildings. Supported by Egypt’s petroleum ministry, the plant avoids the usual practice of burning rice straw, which is a byproduct of rice cultivation, and ensures its sustainable use by repurposing it into MDF.
The factory is the second of its kind in the world and the first in Africa. It significantly reduces air pollution and CO2 emissions in Egypt. The rice straw replaces traditional wood as a raw material in medium-density fibreboard, which is used to make cabinets, doors, furniture and commercial and residential buildings.
Rolls-Royce worked with local partner Engineering for Industries Co. (INDE) and the Egyptian Maintenance Company (EMC), a provider of engineering support services in the region, to supply the mtu Series 4000 L64 FNER gensets, controls and accessories for the WOTECH project, which was established with full Egyptian capital from the oil sector.

Work resumed in January 2025 on the Jeddah Tower, Saudi Arabia, destined to become the world’s tallest building. Formerly known as Kingdom Tower, the skyscraper will, once completed, stand at 3,280 feet - becoming the first structure in history to reach over 1 kilometre in height. It is part of an ambitious US$20 billion economic development near the Red Sea, one of several megaprojects currently underway in the Kingdom.
Jeddah Tower, a US$1.2 billion venture designed by Chicago-based Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, will encompass a mix of luxury hotels, offices, short-term rentals and condominiums. Jeddah Tower derives its name from its location in Jeddah, a major port city along the Red Sea and Saudi Arabia’s 2nd-most populous city.
Saudi Arabia is making history with the world’s largest grid-scale battery energy storage project.
BYD Energy Storage has signed a 12.5 GWh contract with the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), bringing their total collaboration to 15.1 GWh.
This MAJOR project will help Saudi Arabia reach its Vision 2030 goals. It will boost renewable energy use and ensure a steady power supply. Saudi Arabia aims to generate 50% of its electricity from renewables by 2030.
However, renewable energy sources like solar and wind can be unpredictable. The 12.5 GWh battery storage project will solve this issue by storing energy and ensuring a steady power supply. This is very important in Saudi Arabia. The nation’s energy demand is high because of extreme temperatures and heavy electricity use.
BYD’s MC Cube-T ESS storage system will be installed at five locations across Saudi Arabia. These batteries use advanced Cell-to-System (CTS) technology, which improves efficiency and maximizes energy storage. This system will stabilize the grid. It will manage peak energy demands and support the growing renewable energy sector.
BYD has been a pioneer in battery storage technology for over 17 years. The company has delivered more than 75 GWh of battery storage systems to 350 projects in 110 countries. Its energy storage solutions serve many areas, like power generation, utilities, and commercial use.

Users and operators can achieve more efficiency, reduced maintenance intervals, and receive an extended useful life with the optimised MWM TCG 2020 V12 (1MW) gas genset, reports MWM.
Users and operators can achieve more efficiency, reduced maintenance intervals, and receive an extended useful life with the optimised MWM TCG 2020 V12 (1MW) gas genset.
In addition to the well-known 1.2 MWel TCG 2020 V12, the MWM product portfolio features the TCG 2020 V12 gas engine with a capacity of 1 MWel.
The MWM gas engine, which is optimised for the 1 MWel power band, is basically suitable for all natural gas and biogas applications in all countries with 50 Hz networks.
The natural gas variant of the 1 MWel TCG 2020 V12 delivers several advantages. For example, the optimisation of the gas gensets enables the extension of the maintenance intervals to 40,000 operating hours for a partial overhaul and to 80,000 operating hours for a general overhaul.
In the event of permanent operation, this means an increase of the useful life by two years. This and the following modifications of the 1 MWel genset variant enable a massive reduction of the maintenance and servicing overhead, depending on the respective application scenario.
The 1 MWel TCG 2020 V12 reaches an electrical efficiency of 43 percent (under ISO conditions) for natural gas applications. Compared to the version with an electrical capacity of 1.2 MW, the MWM TCG 2020 V12 (1MW) gas engine features the following technical differences:
-Higher mixture cooler temperatures for natural gas applications
-Modified generators
-Base frame design without lubricant extension
-Optimised lubricant management
- Modified turbo charger specification
The MWM TCG 2020 V12 (1MW) gas genset has an output range from 1,000 to 1,560 kWel as well as the best electrical and thermal efficiency in its output class. It offers low operating costs and has the additional advantage of being able to operate on all gas types: natural gas, biogas, landfill gas, sewage gas, mine gas, etc.
The TCG 2020 is mainly used for CHP plants in Europe and for biogas worldwide. The TCG 2020 V12 in the configuration RW (natural gas) and XW (biogas) is specifically optimised for the 1 MWel capacity range,
with even lower operating and maintenance costs.
TCG 2020 K has been especially adapted to non-ISO conditions such as high altitudes or high intake air temperatures in the field of natural gas. For the Asia-Pacific/Bangladesh region (for example) the MWM TCG 2020 V16 K is available with 1,415 kWel. More than 2,000 power generators with approximately 2,800,000 kWel already installed around the globe.
The MWM gas engines of the TCG 2020 series are perfectly geared to the challenges of a dynamic market environment.
MWM’s models in the output range of 1,000 – 1,560 kWel meet the high requirements of a broad range of applications and guarantee efficiency, reliability, flexibility and environmental sustainability, together with low lifecycle costs and high profitability.
The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, UK, is currently served by a modular CHP plant which consists of three MWM TCG 2020 V12 gas engines with a combined output of 3.6 MWel and 3.6 MWth with an absorption chiller for cooling, the MWM gas engines.
These have a potential to deliver an annual energy saving of up to
£1 million and a carbon emission reduction by around one fifth. The TCG 2020 is highly efficient thanks to its optimised inlet duct, combustion chamber and spark plugs. Users can save as much as 15 % per annum on fuel costs – and increase plant profitability.
With its optimised engine components, the TCG 2020 requires up to 50 % less lubricating oil than other similar gensets. In terms of efficiency that means long-term savings.
Whether you need high efficiency or an optimised standalone unit with good load compensation and black start properties – MWM can provide you with an engine tailored exactly to your needs.
TEM (Total Electronic Management) controls not just the engine but the entire system including the heat supply from cogeneration.
Temperature monitoring for each cylinder and anti-knock control ensure the best possible utilisation of fuel and maximum power output, even if gas composition fluctuates.
The latest technology such as MWM’s gas-mixer and TEM allows the use of a wide variety of gases. Even the most problematic gases such as coal mine gas, landfill gas and sewage gas can be used without difficulty, reports MWM.
