A film documenting the life and career of Winter Texan performer Sherwin Linton will premiere at the Border Theater in Mission Friday, Feb. 27. Pioneer Public Television in Minnesota decided to produce the documentary, “Sherwin Linton - Forever on the Stage,” about Linton’s life and music career because of his remarkable record of performing for 59 years without ever See SHERWIN LINTON pg. 06

State’s top mariachi groups to perform at La Joya The excellence of the La Joya ISD mariachi and folklórico (dance) programs was proven again this past weekend when all three high school mariachi groups earned top awards in a statewide mariachi competition. La Joya Palmview High School’s Mariachi Los Lobos was named co-champion in the state competition, while La Joya High School took fourth place, and Juarez-Lincoln High School ranked 11th in the state. Air Fiesta 2015 takes to the sky Saturday

Air Fiesta 2015, the annual air show produced by the Rio Grande Valley Commemorative Air Force, will be held will be held at the Brownsville Airport Feb. 2122. Gates open at 9 a.m. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the gate and are available at all Stripes convenience stores Valleywide. This year’s show will feature a variety of planes participating in the event. Paul Fiala, aerial acrobat, will be back to perform again. He first flew solo in 1953 and then worked as a military, commercial and private pilot. In 1980 he bought a “Red Great Lakes” biplane and learned to fly aerobatics. Since that time he has performed in over 300 airshows. Mike “Spanky” Gallaway started flying aerobatics in 1996 when his fear of stalls convinced him to take an introductory aerobatic class. Since them he has progressed to unlimited aerobatic competitor and air show pilot. Mike has been a member of three US Advanced Aerobatic Teams and is currently on his third aerobatic plane, the Extra 300/SX. Randy Ball is a sixth generation Texan who spent his early years in rural Texas where he spent countless hours with one

RGV Quilt Guild Show featured this weekend

Over 350 quilts and quilted items will be on display at this year’s Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild Show to be held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20-21, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the McAllen Convention Center. One of the many colorful highlights of last year’s show was the “Amazon Star,” named Best of Show. Gerald Brauer created the huge star featuring concentric rays radiating out from a multi-colored star pattern in the center.
