A film documenting the life and career of Winter Texan performer Sherwin Linton will premiere at the Border Theater in Mission Friday, Feb. 27.

State’s top mariachi groups to perform at La Joya The excellence of the La Joya ISD mariachi and folklórico (dance) programs was proven again this past weekend when all three high school mariachi groups earned top awards in a statewide mariachi competition. La Joya Palmview High School’s Mariachi Los Lobos was named co-champion in the state competition, while La Joya High School took fourth place, and Juarez-Lincoln High School ranked 11th in the state.

All three high schools will be performing spring concerts that will feature both the mariachi and folklórico groups.

Air Fiesta 2015 takes to the sky Saturday

Air Fiesta 2015, the annual air show produced by the Rio Grande Valley Commemorative Air Force, will be held will be held at the Brownsville Airport Feb. 2122. Gates open at 9 a.m.

Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the gate and are available at all Stripes convenience stores Valleywide.

This year’s show will feature a variety of planes participating in the event.

Paul Fiala, aerial acrobat, will be back to perform again. He first flew solo in 1953 and then worked as a military, commercial and private pilot. In 1980 he bought a “Red Great Lakes” biplane and learned to fly aerobatics. Since that time he has performed in over 300 airshows.

Mike “Spanky” Gallaway started flying aerobatics in 1996 when his fear of stalls convinced him to take an introductory aerobatic class. Since them he has progressed to unlimited aerobatic competitor and air show pilot. Mike has been a member of three US Advanced Aerobatic Teams and is currently on his third aerobatic plane, the Extra 300/SX. Randy Ball is a sixth generation Texan who spent his early years in rural Texas where he spent countless hours with one

RGV Quilt Guild Show featured this weekend

Over 350 quilts and quilted items will be on display at this year’s Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild Show to be held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20-21, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the McAllen Convention Center.

One of the many colorful highlights of last year’s show was the “Amazon Star,” named Best of Show. Gerald Brauer created the huge star featuring concentric rays radiating out from a multi-colored star pattern in the center. Matadors face off in Grand Finale on Feb. 22

Cesar Castaneda of Tijuana, Mexico, who performed to a sellout crowd on Feb. 8, will return to the Santa Maria Bullring in La Gloria to perform in the Grand Finale on Feb. 22.

“His complete control of both of his bulls made him the top matador of the winter season. His valor is not questioned, and it is his knowledge of the bulls’ character that enables him to have complete control in the final act which becomes a ballet between matador and the bull,” stated Santa Maria Bullring owner Fred Renk.

Castaneda showed the depth of his skill by taking a feisty bull in his first perfor-

mance on Feb. 8, and bringing him to a point where he could take the symbolic rose from his back. While bullfights in the Hispanic culture are thought to be more akin to a ballet than a sport, nobody told Castaneda’s first bull he was supposed to perform a ballet, so it took all of the matador’s skills to calm him enough to be willing to dance.

He did this through skillful maneuvers of the cape performing moves called Dianas and Veronicas and others techniques that gradually brought the bull under control as he moved closer and closer to the rose on the bull’s back for the symbolic

Magic Valley Chorus Annual Show is Feb. 21

Magic Valley Chorus of Sweet Adelines International will present its annual spring show “Black and White and Read All Over” on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 3 p.m. at PSJA High School Performing Arts Center. The school is located on Veterans Blvd (I Rd) and Ridge Road in San Juan.

Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door and are available from any chorus member and also at the Alamo Chamber of Commerce.

Magic Valley Chorus is a group of women who sing a capella music, barber-

shop style. They sing a wide variety of songs including country, gospel, Broadway and movies, musicals, pop and jazz.

The spring show this year follows the people of a small town through their activities as published in the local weekly newspaper. In addition to the chorus members and quartets, the show will feature “Texas Gold,” a men’s barbershop quartet and a six-piece jazz combo.

Many in the audience were disappointed when the judge awarded Castaneda, fourth-ranked bullfighter in Mexico, just one symbolic ear for his performance.

(Editor’s note: If I had been the judge I would have awarded Castaneda two symbolic ears and the tail just for staying in the ring with the first bull who was ready to charge everything in sight.)

Karla Santoyo did not fare much better in her first match. While not as angry as the first bull, her bull was quick on his feet and turned easily, coming too close to her more than once before he too started performing the “ballet.” She managed to bring him to a point where she could get the rose from his back and, like all matadors, turned her back on him and started to walk away. This bull turned quickly, picked her up between his horns and tossed her to the ground. She got two ears for her performance.

Both Castaneda and Santoyo were able to demonstrate more of the artistry of the bullfight as the second two bulls were not a jittery as those in the first half of the show. The audience watched intently as the matadors skillfully used their capes as they stepped closer and closer to the bulls during each charge, or pass, of the bull -until -- the matadors were close enough to

pluck the roses from the backs of the bulls, symbolizing the kill.

Seeing Karla use a back movement of the cape that drew the bull in behind her on several moves and successfully move him forward without getting tossed was evidence of her great skills, in spite of her young age. Both matadors walked away with full honors for their performances, two symbolic ears and a tail.

Castaneda who is the top matador of the season will return for the Grand Finale, or final bullfight or the season, on Sunday, Feb. 22.

Men’s Choral Festival coming to Valley

The largest men’s chorus ever assembled in the Rio Grande Valley will perform on Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rio Grande Men’s Choral Festival at the PSJA Oso Dome, 1229 S. Veterans’ Blvd in San Juan. The concert is free but donations will be accepted to help cover the cost in presenting the event.

Men of all ages will be united in song.

Students will be singing with their teachers, sons will be singing with their fathers and teenagers will be singing with senior citizens. The first Men’s Choral was held in 2013 with 260 men participating. This year over 300 men are expected to participate.

In addition to the Men’s Festival Chorus, the Senior Ambassadors, The University of Texas-Pan American Men’s Chorus and the award-winning Men’s Choir from Harlingen High School will participate.

Matthew Oltman will be guest conductor. He is the former conductor and music director of the internationally famous and Grammy award winning men’s choir, Chanticleer,” and leads choirs and music

all over the world. Most recently he was a visiting professor at Texas State University.

This festival was the dream child of Virgel Kroeker, director of Senior Ambassadors, three years ago. With the help of David Means, Chairperson of the Choral Music Department at UTPA, the dream became a reality.

Hailing from South Dakota and Minnesota, Sherwin has performed from the west coast to Nashville. But for the past 15 years, Sherwin has become a Winter Texan, and is well known for his Johnny Cash tribute shows.

The film highlights Sherwin’s career in music, including how he started a rockabilly band in 1953 after purchasing his first electric guitar by working as a golf caddy and hotel bellhop to raise $125.

Sherwin eventually traveled to Nashville in 1966 where he signed with the Acuff-Rose Company and cut his song, “Cotton King” that sent him to the top of the music charts. He was soon touring nationally and was nominated for Entertainer of The Year and Male Vocalist of the Year in 1972 and 1973.

In the 1970s, after Johnny Cash recorded his songs in Folsum Prison, the Governor of South Dakota asked Sherwin to record his Johnny Cash Tribute Show at a South Dakota prison. Sherwin dedicated the album, “Hello, I’m Not Johnny Cash,” to Johnny, who was honored to have an entire album dedicated to him. Later, in one of his shows, Johnny called Sherwin to the stage, took off his boots, and asked Sherwin if he could fill them. While Sher-

win denied he could, Johnny signed the boots and gave them to Sherwin, who still has them. The two became good friends.

In 1986, he wrote and recorded “Santa got a DWI” that is now a Christmas classic. Two of his albums “Hillbilly Heaven” and “Highway Heading South” were nominated for Grammys.

During his career, Sherwin has been inducted into 11 Music Halls of Fame. He was written up in “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” for not having missed a single performance in 50 years. Now, at 75 years of age Sherwin is still going strong.

Link Union introduces their new music style

By Kathy Olivarez “The Rio Grande Valley is where we learned to be a band,” said Rachel Link at a recent performance at Sleepy Valley Ranch. “When we first came here 12 years ago, we were young and inexperienced and the Valley allowed us to learn to perform. It is good to be back.”

Today the Link Family, now known as Link Union, is all grown up with all five children performing. Rachel is lead vocalist while oldest brother Kyle is lead fiddle player. Now all three of the younger boys, Ben, John and Aaron play, sing and write sons. Mother Becky plays keyboard and sings lead and harmony. Dad, Lance, handles the sound management.

Their music has changed a bit too. According to Becky they play “American roots music.” When they first arrived in the Rio Grande Valley they were strictly bluegrass with a bit of gospel. However they have expanded their talents to include a bit of classic rock, some folk music, traditional country music and have added quite a bit of their original music to the shows. They even play a bit of Bach on banjo.

Rachel explained they added Celtic music and instruments such as the pennywhistle to their show because of their Irish heritage. “My mother’s family came to America as indentured servants. And my father’s family came as a merchant soldier to fight against Americans during the Revolution. But they liked it so much they switched sides and stayed.”

During their current show they sing and play a variety of music including “Angeline the Baker,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Seven Bridges Road,” “I Wouldn’t Change You If I could,” and “Memories,” a poignant song written by Becky. The boys sing “Running Bear,” which they say was Dad’s favorite song while growing up.

Old favorites like “ You’re My Best Friend,” “Down on the Farm,” a new song written by Kyle that looks back on a happy childhood, while an a cappella version of “Gospel Train” alternated with music like “Bach on Banjo.”

Their segment of Celtic Music featuring Rachel on Pennywhistle had that special haunting sound found in so much Irish music. They ended the show with an American Trilogy of Dixie, “All My Trials” and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” followed by returning to their roots with a traditional bluegrass son, “Mule Skinner,” to the shouts of encore from the standing and clapping crowd.

by Aaron called “Making Sound.”

Link Union will be doing shows throughout the Valley through March 7 including the Faith, Family and Freedom Show in Harlingen on Feb. 23. Other performers will include the Punches Family, replacing the Prowell Family who had to leave because of an emergency, along with Lindley Creek.

Then for Kyle it is home to Missouri where his wife Ashley is expecting their second child almost anytime now.

Coin Collection provides traditional country music Andy & Brenda Coin of Branson, known as the Coin Collection, are a duet who sing all the old traditional country music songs in great harmony. From George Jones to Merle Haggard and Patsy Cline to Carly Simon, and lots of singers in between, the Coins have been referred to as a human jukebox of traditional country music.

Andy is originally from Independence, Missouri where he was a full-time entertainer and he is also the owner of Andy’s Music Store in Kansas City. Brenda grew up in Dickinson, North Dakota, located in the Badlands that inspired country music.

During his career, Andy has opened shows for Kathy Mattea, K.D. Lang, and Keith Whitley. He made a guest appearance on Hee Haw. In 1990, he moved to Branson and started the Frontier Show at the 76 Music Hall.

In addition to being an accomplished musician, he was the entertainment director at Guitars & Cadillacs in Branson.

While there he booked Merle Haggard, Junior Brown, Kenny Chesney, Chely Wright, David Allen Coe, Delbert McClinton and Fireball. In addition to entertaining, he does vintage guitar shows.

Brenda started singing at an early age,

and won many competitions. She toured with many bands and eventually started her own band, “Quarter Moon.” In 1989, she moved to Branson where she sang in numerous shows including the Vance Greek Show, The Eddie Cash Show, The Buck Trent Show, Warren Stokes Country Review (Eureka Springs, Arkansas), and the Brumley Music Show.

The highlight of her career was working with Charlie Pride as a feature and back-up singer for 10 years at the Charley Pride Theater and The Grand Palace in Branson. She also toured abroad in England, Ireland and Scotland with Charley.

Brenda also worked on cruise ships with notables like Tim McGraw, Shenandoah, John Anderson and Alison Krauss & Union Station. She has also performed in the Chuck Wagon Gang and as one of the Branson Divas.

For the past 15 years, the couple has worked together doing shows like Memories in the Morning Show and the Larry Musgrave Show. They have opened for Alabama and Wayne Newton at the National Home Builders Convention in Dallas and in Atlanta.

Charro Days in Brownsville starts Sunday Charro Days is a Brownsville tradition that started 78 years ago to foster bi-national friendships and respect for the traditions of Mexico. During the first Charro Days residents and visitors dressed in traditional costumes of Mexico and honored the Mexican cowboys, the charros.

The first parade featured horse-drawn and hand-drawn floats, marching bands from Mexico, soldiers from Fort Brown, and school children dressed as churros and chinas.

Sombrero Festival starts February 26 in Brownsville

Get ready for fun in Brownsville as the Sombrero Festival that complements the ongoing Charro Days Celebration opens its gates at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26.

The event will be held in Washington Park, located at E. 7th Street and E. Adams Street in Brownsville. Admission is free for the first three hours of each day of the event, which lasts through Saturday, Feb. 28. Regular admission is $10.

On Thursday, entertainment starts at 5:30 p.m. with Frecuencia Nortena. At 6:45 p.m. Adrian Acosta takes the stage.

At 8:30 p.m. Salomon Robles y Sus Legendarios perform at 10:30 p.m. Los Herederos De Nuevo Leon end the evening’s entertainment.

On Friday entertainment starts on the Main Stage at 3:30 p.m. with Veronique & The Puro Party Band, followed at 5 p.m.

The Museum of South Texan History in Edinburg will present the 25th annual Pioneer & Ranching Crafts Day at the museum Saturday, Feb. 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A variety of activities will be ongoing throughout the day.

Among the highlights of this year’s event will be the traditional folkloric dances and mariachi music of Mexico. The presentation kicks off at 10 a.m. with Edinburg High School Mariachi Oro. They will be followed at 10:45 a.m. by Grupo Folklorico RGV. Next, Las Palmas Ballet Folklorico will take the stage.

At 11:30 a.m. Pipp Gillette returns with traditional cowboy music and poetry. He will be followed by a brief intermission.

John also won Best Male Vocalist of the Branson Show Awards in 2010. That was the same year he started wintering in the Rio Grande Valley and his success here has been phenomenal.

Link Union, a favorite with Winter Texans, has returned to the Rio Grande Valley this season after a year’s absence.

Originally a bluegrass band, the band now performs a variety of music from rock, Irish Celtic music to jazz and gospel.

Each family member is a talented musician and they play a wide range of instruments, including mandolin, cello and pennywhistle, fiddle, guitar, bass, drums and keyboard.

Collectively, they have won seven awards for Musician or Instrumentalist of the Year from FAME (Families Advocating Moral Entertainment) and the four similar awards from the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music Awards.

Leslie Blasing is a local entertainer who has been extremely popular with Winter

popular with Winter Texans featuring the music of Patsy Cline, Cher, Judy Garland and Barbara Streisand and others encompassing music from several bygone eras.

She does local shows at Boomerang Billy’s, Louie’s Backyard and other locations on the Island as well as doing some shows in parks around the Rio Grande Valley.

She has twice been named Female Vocalist of the Year and was also selected as Entertainer of the Year in 2014.

J. C. Harrisson is new on the Rio Grande Valley scene, arriving in 2015.

He sings traditional country music from legends like Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and others. He also sings the music of more modern country legends like George Strait, Alan Jackson, Ricky Skaggs, Brooks & Dunn and others.

Dave & Daphne are now in their second year of entertaining in the Rio Grande Valley and have been making quite a name for themselves. Dave is an outstanding picker and was lead guitarist for Barbara Mandrell for ten years. Daphne has a voice like none other in the Rio Grande Valley with a range of several octaves.

She sang gospel with the Gaither’s Homecoming Show for several years. In addition to gospel, Daphne sings Patsy Cline, Anne Murray, and many other favorites of Winter Texans.

She has performed on the Grand Jubilee TV Show in Branson, and as a result was nominated for Entertainer of the Year.

Jami Asselin is another long time Branson entertainer who has performed in “The 70’s Show” and “Roy Clark’s Hee Haw Theater.” She also spent many years performing at Silver Dollar City. Jami took a break from the lime light and raised two wonderful kids while teaching voice, guitar and piano to the kids on the Branson stages. She is also a singer/songwriter with public radio play on several popular regional syndicated radio stations.

Together this dynamic duo has teamed up with their variety show to present five decades of music that has their audiences dancing, laughing and singing.

Winter Texan appointed to HCMPO

William R. Lang, of Casa de Valle in Alamo, has been appointed to the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee of the Hidalgo County Metropolitan Planning Organization (HCMPO) as an advocate for the Winter Texan community.

The HCMPO is a federally funded organization that works with Hidalgo County communities and the Texas Department of Transportation to plan for the county’s future transportation needs, including cyclists and pedestrians.

The North American B-25 Mitchell, a twin-engine, twin-tailed bomber was the most versatile aircraft of World War II. The plane is 53 feet long and weighs over 27,000 pounds and clocks a maximum speed of over 300 miles per hour. Flights are $395 per person.

On Saturday, Feb. 21 a new event will be added to the airshow. A Strongman

compete to pull a plane down the ramp.

The plane will be a P-51 Mustang “Pecos Bill,” a World War II single-engine fighter plane that is 32 feet long and weighs over 6400 pounds. There will be cash prizes for first and second place winners. Entrance fee for the contest is $20.

For those who like to watch the planes, but prefer to stay a little closer to the ground, camel rides will be offered at Air Fiesta 2015.
