World renown pianist Dino presents ‘Amore’ American’s Piano Showman and Ambassador of Good Will, Dino Kartsonakis, will appear on stage at the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The Dino Live in Concert show will be presented by Vance Greek in his traditional Valentine’s celebration, “Amore.”

Vance will open for Dino, who will perform a concert filled with love songs for Valentines Day. Dino is a two-time Grammy Award nominee and one-time Grammy Award winner for “Chariots Fire,” which he composed. He is an eight-time Dove Award winner and a Tele Award winner for “Miracles.” Dino began showing his tremendous talent at the age of three when he would sit at his grandmother’s upright piano on Sundays and play the melody and harmony he heard that morning in church.

He “grew into his talents” and later attended Julliard School of Music and Conservatories in France and Germany.

He has performed at the Hollywood Bowl, the Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and many other prestigious venues nationwide. He has performed for presidents and other dignitaries. He toured the world playing in places like Russia, Japan and

The highly popular Winter Texan Fiesta entertainment will be held Saturday, Feb. 14 at Leo Pena Park from 1 to 4 p.m. Lunch will be provided to those with a meal ticket. Free meal tickets will be available on Feb. 9 at The Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce, 202 W. Tom Landry – while they last. For those unable to get tickets at the Chamber, additional tickets will be available on Friday, Feb. 13 during the artisan show.

Rich Bellert, the show’s producer will be emceeing the entertainment event, reciting his cowboy poetry between acts to keep folks entertained. This year’s entertainment features a variety of genres including rock & roll, big band, country and bluegrass.

Bob Dollie and Friends will be performing songs that will bring back memories of the big band era. Dollie is a highly talented musician, playing the keyboard piano and fiddle. Dolle is a talented musician who was inducted into the Texas Swing Hall of Fame in 1999. He is also a member of the Western Swing Society Hall of Fame in Seattle, Washington, the Western Swing Music Society of the Southwest in Oklahoma City and the Western Swing Society Hall of Fame in Sacramento, California.

Fred King, who plays lead guitar, played with a band called The Jaysons, which opened for many stars including Merle Haggard, Ernest Tubb, Waylon Jennings, Jim Ed Brown, Faron Young and many more.

Others in the Bob Dollie & Friends Big Band include Roger Richardson playing trumpet, Roger Steiger, tenor and soprano sax, and Don Salmond on the drums.

This year is the 50th anniversary of the Beatles appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show, and rock & roll will be featured by the Going Back Band. Daryl & Heike Schueller who are from High River, Alberta, Canada, are the bandleaders and are home based at Canyon Lake Resort in Mission. Schueller is an accomplished musician who as a recording artist had a song that was in “The Top 50” on Canadian radio in the 1970s.

Howard and Barbara Bedient are from Calgary, Canada who are Winter Texans in Alamo Palms. In 1974 he toured Canada as a member of the “Super Cirkus” and the “1910 Fruit Gum Company” with both bands having radio hits in the 1970s. Barbara plays accordion.

Louie Long and The Drifters provide some of the best country music now available in the Valley. Long is the lead vocal and rhythm guitarist with an extensive background in country music. He has played for a number of years at Silver Dollar City in Branson in the Ozark Mountain Country Music Show.

George Epley is a well-known and popular lead guitarist in the Valley playing since the 1980’s and was the lead player for the Texas Three for over six years.

Ron Ford is the lead bass player and a vocalist for the band having played in Branson as a band member for a number of years including the Clarence Hayden Country Music Band. John Blevins is the lead fiddle player. Linda Stark is the band’s drummer who has a long career playing with a number of bands including country and rock n roll.

Geri Clark is the rhythm guitar and female vocalist in the band. She has a wide background of experience with bands in Branson.

Coleman Smith is an expert in playing the lead steel guitar who lives in Branson playing for the Tim Hadler Band throughout the summer.

Southern Anthem, formerly the Pausewang Family Band, is a fresh and uprising family band whose heart-warming performers sing originals and songs consisting of traditional country, new country, country gospel, and a little bit of pop to audiences throughout Texas and beyond.

In 2014 the band received the “Rising Star” award from the Gatesville Country Music Hall of Fame, in Gatesville, TX. This led to an invitation to appear on the Shotgun Red Variety Show, aboard the General Jackson Showboat in Nashville, Tenn., which was aired on the RFD-TV network.

The Punches Family Band is among the most popular variety bands in the Valley and has been featured on a television show known as the “The Great American Gospel,” which airs in many countries and on over 200 TV stations across America.

Mom, Dad and all three children sing and play instruments including the bass guitar, rhythm guitar, fiddle, mandolin and banjo.

Word was received at press time the Veterans Memorial High School Mariachi and Folkloric Groups will be able to perform. There will be more information on their performance later.

While the official start time for the Winter Texan event is 1 p.m. Pre-show activities begin at 11:15 a.m. with Grupo Folkorico Rio Grande Valley under the direction of Michelle Gallegos. Children ages 4 to 10 will be dancing the Rhumba and Bachaca, while children ages 10 to 16 will perform the Flamenco. Adults will perform folkloric dances.

The main show will begin at 1 p.m. and will conclude by 4 p.m.

Ballet Folklórico UTPA presents Alegría Gira 2015

The Ballet Folklórico UT Pan American will present its tour of Alegría Gira 2015 with four shows throughout the Rio Grande Valley, beginning Feb 12.

Alegría Gira 2015 is a vibrant show that brings to life Mexico’s beautiful folk dance art. An energetic, spirited, cast of 30 dancers, colorful costuming, dramatic and exciting choreographies, complemented with special theatrical lighting and music, is designed to delight audiences. A history of Mexico’s folk dance is unveiled as original works and invited guest artists’ choreographies from eight different regions and states of Mexico fill the stage.

Castaneda, who is considered to be one of the top matadors in Mexico, has made many appearances at the Santa Maria Bullring and has given many phenomenal performances. In the Jan. 25 opener at Santa Maria, Castaneda dominated a huge grey bull, from a line of Iberian Spanish bulls imported for the Santa Maria Bullring.

Castaneda won two symbolic ears and a tail from the audience because of his performance. The bull blended perfectly with Castaneda’s Spanish style of fighting. His performance resembled a ballet between the two of them. Castaneda’s passes were so close the bull brushed his legs.

Karla Santoyo, named the Aztec Princess by her countrymen, made her debut in the Santa Maria Bullring at 18-years-ofage during the 2013 season. She returned performed in the 2014 season and was awarded ears and a tail. Now at 20-yearsold Karla competes with the best, and Fred Renk believes she will give an outstanding

performance on Sunday. She is the youngest woman matador of the four active women in the world.

Karla was born into the dynasty of Santoyo, which is as classical as a matadora can get. Her father and uncle were both highly-ranked professional matadors and her grandfather owns the largest brave bull ranch in the state. Being trained by them has given her an edge most young matadors do not have.

Golden Age Olympics petanque competition begins

By Kathy Olivarez Petanque competition for the 35th Annual Golden Age Olympics, sponsored by McAllen Parks and Recreation, opened at Pleasant Valley Ranch on Jan. 20 with a lighted torch carried by Hermel Pelletier.

Behind him was a group of men carrying the medals for winners of the competition.

Pentaque, which is a French sport similar to bacche ball, is a very popular sport in Europe. In fact, there was a team from Germany playing in this year’s GAO competition. They came two years ago and won the tournament and returned this year to see if they could do it again.

The sport has grown in popularity in the Golden Age Olympics as more and more French Canadians choose to make the Rio Grande Valley their winter home.

Many Winter Texans from the states have also taken up the sport because almost anyone can play it without stressing their bodies.

There were 71 teams with 213 players from eight parks across the Valley competing in the petanque tournament.

The game is played on a long, narrow court about the size of a shuffleboard court. There are three players on each team. Before the game starts, a person from the team that will start throws out a

little red ball. My teacher, Roger Mathieu of Massachusetts, said the ball is commonly referred to as a piglet or just a pig.

The pig must land between the red marks on either end of the court or be thrown over. If is hits the wall of the court it must also be thrown over.

The object of game is to get the ball as close to the pig as possible. The team with the ball closest to the pig gets the point after both teams have played. If they have two balls closer to the pig than anyone on the other team, they can get two points.

Kenaston Band featuring guest performers

The Roger Kenaston Band from Nebraska will have additional guest performers at Riverside and Wink’s this week. Along with Roger Kenaston, his wife Sharon Kenaston and “Chet Atkins Style” picker Jerry Porter, the band will include singer Jimmy Hansen from Burwell, Nebraska and drummer Deb Nelson from Libby, Montana.

Jimmy Hansen is a seasoned performer who has been a regional favorite in Central Nebraska for many years. According to Sharon Kenaston, Director of the Wahoo Country Music Show in Wahoo, Nebraska,

“Hansen is one of those special performers that should have been a super-star.” His charisma and stage presence is like that of Opry stars from days gone by, truly professional.”

In addition, Deb Nelson will be drumming with the Roger Kenaston Band for two weeks. She is originally from Council Bluffs, Iowa but has recently moved to Libby, Montana. “She’s an excellent drummer and will be a great addition,” says Kenaston.

Having an additional band member will

allow for more variety from the two great guitar pickers in the band, Roger Kenaston and Jerry Porter. The two have worked shows and dances together for 30 years beginning when Porter was just a teenager.

Winter Texans see the five-piece band at Riverside on Wednesday, Feb. 11 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and at Wink’s on Thursday Feb. 12 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Other scheduled performances for the Roger Kenaston Band this week include Citrus Valley on Feb. 13 and Gateway RV Park in Raymondville on the Feb. 14.

Texas Citrus Fiesta announces Winter Texan winners

The Texas Citrus Fiesta Parade of Oranges would be the same without the participation of the many Winter Texans who get involved in float building and many other aspects of the Fiesta. There were many excellent floats in the parade on Saturday, Jan. 31 rockin’ down Conway Avenue to the theme of “Old Time Rock & Roll.”

In the Golf Cart Division, first place went to Oleander Acres RV & Mobile Park.

In the Winter Texan I float category, which is composed of parks with less that 250 spaces, Twin Lakes RV Park won first place.

In the Winter Texan II category, is composed of Winter Texan Parks with over 250 spaces, Mission Bell-Trade Winds RV Resort captured first place, while second place went to Green Gate Grove Park, and third place was awarded to Bentsen Palm RV Park.

In the Valley Product float division,

Split Rail RV Park in Mission earned the third place trophy, while newcomer Mission Collegiate High School took second and talented competitor Our Lady of Guadalupe Church captured the prized first place trophy for the second year in a row.

Two years ago, Split Rail beat out Our Lady of Guadalupe, taking first place in the Valley Products Division. Last year, Split Rail won second place.

The Valley Products Division is the most prestigious competition, since these

floats are required to be covered with citrus and other agricultural products grown in the Rio Grande Valley. For a fresh-looking presentation on parade day, much of the work of slicing and affixing the citrus to the float must be done the night before the parade.

A very big thanks to all the Winter Texans who participated in this special parade. It simply would not be as much fun without Winter Texan participation.

Harlingen hosts Winter Texan Appreciation Day

The City of Harlingen hosted its annual appreciation day for Winter Texans living in the Harlingen area on Monday, Jan. 19 at Casa de Amistad. The event included an outdoor car show outside the building with a variety of old cars on display for Winter Texans to enjoy.

Dave’s Barbecue provided lunch for hungry visitors selling a brisket combo, chips and a drink for $5.

Sergio & Roping the Wind provided live music for outside activities singing songs like “Mustang Sally” that were favorites of Winter Texans in their younger years.

Inside the building many merchants from Harlingen had booths set up to give information about services their businesses could provide ranging from car care to medical treatments and a variety of options in between.

Tickets were give to Winter Texans to win door prizes donated by the merchants.

Items awarded included car care items, a box of chocolates, a week’s stay at a local inn, free tickets for a dolphin watch on South Padre Island, free golf games at a local golf course, and variety of other items.

In the back of Casa de Amistad, a stage area was set up for entertainment. First up was the Ron Pena Magic Show. Ron and Elizabeth, his assistant, performed a variety of magic tricks.

Edinburg Parks and Recreation Folkloric Dance Group was one of the performances at the Harlingen Winter Texan Appreciation Day. First up was Sally Trevino Barron, Ms. South Texas Senior America Royalty 2014, who danced to “No Tengo Dinero,” (I don't have money). Bidgie Weber, Ms. South Texas Senior America Nobility 2013, followed by modeling an outfit from the Vintage Collection consisting of a brightly colored skirt and vest, Zazanie footwear and a pair of pantaloons with black bows completed her outfit.

Men’s Choral Festival registration deadline is Friday

Registration deadline is Feb. 6 for male singers who wish to participate in the largest Men’s Choral Festival in South Texas on held Feb. 21 at the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Oso Dome. The goal is to have 275 to 300 voices participating in this special event, which is being sponsored by Senior Ambassadors and the University of Texas-Pan American Men’s Choir.

The festival will include performances by the Senior Ambassadors, the UTPA Men’s Choir, Harlingen High School Men’s Choir and the 300 Voice Festival Choir.

Senior Ambassadors is a 50-member senior male chorus under the direction of Virgil Kroeker. The UTPA Men’s Chorus is a group of student musicians under the direction of Dr. David Means.

Guest conductor for this festival will be Matthew Oltman, Professor Emeritus of the Grammy Award winning vocal ensemble, Chanticleer. He is on the faculty of Texas State University. The accompanist for the festival is Dr. David Means, head of the Choral Music Department at UTPA. The festival men’s chorus will perform “Let All Men Sing,” by Keith Christopher, “Coney Island Baby/We All Fall,” arranged by SPEBSQSA, Inc. and “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” arranged by Peter

J. Wilhousky. Each group needs to order their own music. For individuals who do not want to order their music individually, Virgil Kroeker will have the music for sale at $7.

The schedule for the day will include registration and seating from 12:30 to 1 p.m. At 1 p.m. the introduction and first rehearsal will be held. Rehearsals and sectionals will be held from 1 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Participants will go out to dinner at 5:30; they will pay the cost of their own meals. At 7 p.m. doors open for the performance and the grand performance begins at 7:30 p.m.

Everyone who participates should wear slacks, and a nice shirt.

Petanque balls weigh seven to eight grams. After each player had thrown, the winner was determined by measurement.

The first team to reach 13 points is the winner of the round. The first team to win two rounds wins the game.

Often one of the players can hit the pig and move it so that a ball that landed next to it at the beginning of the set may not be near it at the end.

Rose Leclerc of Quebec threw the opening ball on the court. Richard Girard, Pleasant Valley captain, and Gaston Sairdo, Lake Texano captain, both of Quebec, moved about the court measuring and determining which balls were out, and which balls won each set. The teams were evenly matched because they were close in score all the way though the first round.

After watching a bit of play I spoke with Debra Kost and Ray Battista, park managers at Pleasant Valley Ranch. They explained that Pleasant Valley has six team courts and over 150 players. Kost

said the park has the nicest petanque courts in the Valley, which is why the petanque competition is held there, where residents are 75 to 80 percent French Canadian.

“Petanque is their favorite activity next to line dancing or trail dancing,” Kost explained.

“Many Canadians retire at younger ages than we do in the United States and they like sports to keep them active, ” Battista added. “Many of our residents play at least twice a week and then take part in our weekly tournaments.”

Rick Krauss, who was there officially representing the McAllen Golden Age Olympics, said petanque is one of 40 different competitions the city is sponsoring over nine weeks of events. He added that most of the events are being run by volunteers. Hermel Pelletier and Reinelde Laforge were volunteer coordinators for the petanque competition.

Four days of competition was scheduled to determine the final winners due to the large number of players.

After the competition ended on Jan. 28 winners of the four-day competition were announced. Gold medal winners were Jean-Pierre Julien, Micheline Coutu and Claude Perreault of Pleasant Valley RV Resort. Silver medals went to Denis Leblanc, Cécile Lalancette and Nicole Forand of Sleepy Valley RV Resort.

Bronze Medals went to Guy Côté Raymond Roy and Léon Larivière.

Next up will be the Senior Ambassadors, a popular Winter Texan group with 44 members from all over the United States and Canada along with a few locals who sing under the direction of Virgel Kroeker. Senior Ambassadors sing a variety of music include patriotic, spiritual, light popular music old time music. They have two accompanists. Esther Hewitt has been playing for Senior Ambassadors for 24 years while Rosetta Jeffries has been with the group nine years.

Their first song for the show will be “Rio Grande Valley Home,” which is a sort of theme song for the Senior Ambassadors. “Let All Men Sing,” is a contemporary piece. “Put Your Head on my Shoulder,” was popular in 1958 when it
