Snowbird Extravaganza brings top Canadian talent to McAllen

This year’s annual Snowbird Extravaganza feature a star-studded cast of some of Canada’s most famous performers.

The event will be held Tuesday, Jan. 31 and Wednesday, Feb. 1 at the McAllen Convention Center. This is a free event that will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Performers this year include Ian Thomas, Jimmy Flynn, Michelle Wright, Sean Emery, Tom Leadbeater, and The Stampeders.

The show includes the most successful rock and roll musician in Canada, Ian Thomas. His most memorable song was “Painted Ladies” in 1973, which became an American Top 40 hit. Also very popular was his song “Runner” recorded by the Manfred Mann’s Earth Band. In 1974 he was named “Most Promising Male Vocalist of the Year” by Juno. Other popular songs included “Hold On,” “Right Before Your Eyes,” and “Chains.”

Richard Lynch performing in RGV

Country musician Richard Lynch and his band and will be performing in the Rio Grande Valley this season. Lynch, who lives in Waynesville, Ohio, is a designer and builder of barns when he is not working on his farm or playing music. But in spite of farming and barn building, he and his band find time to write and perform a number of chart-topping hits, giving countless performances each year. In addition to classic country he and the band also play western swing, rock-a-billy and outlaw country music.

Lynch got his love of music from his father, Woody, who taught him to pick and to appreciate the traditional value of country music. His first album, “Last of a Dying Breed,” had nine singles that charted internationally. His second album, “A Better Place,” received rave reviews around the world.

After his song, “A Better Place” spent 32 weeks at number one on the Roots Music Report’s True Country Songs chart, the song was named the #1 Roots Music Report True Country Song for 2016.

Researcher has formula for reversing decline in Winter Texan population

By Henry Miller Though a study shows the Winter Texan population is dwindling in South Texas some park are seeing growth they haven’t seen in nearly a decade. And a researcher said finding the right combination of activities and better marketing is a key to attracting more retirees to the region.

“If we are going to maintain the industry we have to attract the new Winter Texans,” said Dr. Penny Simpson, marketing professor and director of the Business and Tourism Research Center at UTRGV. Every two years the center produces a study that looks at trends in the South Texas Winter Texan population. The overall population has been declining since 2009 according to recent reports. Simpson said to reverse the trend parks need to recognize that with a new generation of Winter Texans comes a new set of preferences.

“It’s important to know what the people want and to offer those activities or programs to these newcomers,” she said.

“The image probably of RV parks is with shuffleboard and rocking chairs but baby boomers don’t necessarily want those things. I’m 75 and my preference is sitting on a chair and visiting friends, that doesn’t mean the 60-year-old wants that.”

One property that seems to have found the right combination is Llano Grande Resort and Country Club in Mercedes, which has a waiting list of people who want residency in the 1,160-site property.

It’s the first time in eight years the park has been in this situation — a good problem to have, said Activities Director Linda Anklam.

She said that waiting list didn’t come by chance, however. Meetings took place where new ideas were tossed about, a new 1,100-seat Hynes Event Center was built and there was plenty of marketing and advertising focused on recruiting Winter Texans.

“We have so much going on here to attract new residents,” Anklam said. “The baby boomers like more rock and roll and we are bringing in more shows like that.

They are more active and play tennis and pickleball and we have that. The younger Winter Texans are still moving fast and they want different activities.”

The Hynes Event Center is an attraction both for residents and the local community. The Oak Ridge Boys just completed a four-day show there and other shows planned include a Beatles tribut band, and Eagles tribute band and the Bellamy Brothers.

Remote control racing has become popular at several South Texas resort and RV parks. Alamo Rec-Veh Park currently has two tracks completed and is constructing a carpet track for its RC owners.

The park also attracts visitors on a regular basis who want to check out drone racing, RC speedboat and sailboat racing, fishing in the seven-acre lake or take a look at the park’s indoor shooting range with targets 10 meters way and .177-caliber rifles.

Tejas RC Fun Fly Air Show draws large crowds

By Henry Miller The Tejas Radio Control Model Aircraft Association held its annual Fun Fly on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 21-22, at the Tejas Club flying field, located on Stewart Road south of San Juan. More than 120 airplanes, helicopters and quads took to the air over the weekend and 400600 people attended the event, according to official estimates.

The association holds two fun flies per year, with the other one coming during the summer and known as the “Hotter Than Hell Fly.” “It’s pretty accurate,” Charlie Yow said, regarding the name. “It’s usually 104 degrees or something like that.” Yow was the contest director for the show this past weekend and is in his third year as the Tejas RC Association president.

The bigger event is the January one, which attracts many Winter Texans. Yow said there were about 45 members signed up for the event, which doesn’t charge for admission. The club raises money through selling food and raffle tickets.

This year, Yow said, the club made about $2,000 from the event.

“The Winter Texans have had long careers; they’ve retired and many of them have had a career in aviation. They are retired pilots or have belonged to the aviation field somehow,” Yow said. “Most of them have the older aircraft and aren’t really into the drones or the newer equipment. But they know how to fly their craft because it’s been a part of their life for so long. There are some baby boomers, however, who get into the photography with quads and will try anything.”

Yow and Phil Johnson wowed the crowd with their “Phil and Charlie Show,” each taking one of their model helicopters – with rotors that are 1.2 meters in diameter – and streaking them along the sky.

Yow said it’s not uncommon to see the copters reach 200 miles per hour, especially when a professional helicopter pilot

is at the controls.

“You’re really not flying them,” Yow said. “You’re just preventing them from crashing the entire time. It does exactly what you want them to do. If you want to control it to go straight into the ground, it doesn’t have a problem to do that. Watch the professional pilot fly one of those – it’s amazing. It can scare people.”

Yow is a mechanical engineer by trade and at one point looked to become an aeronautical engineer. His interest in remote control planes goes back to his preteen years.

“I was 12 when I built my first plane,” said Yow, now 45. “It used to take us eight months sometimes to build a plane.

Things have changed a lot since then.”

Now, most of the planes are known as ARFs, Almost Ready to Fly. The body is ready, all it needs is the engine and a few other components and it’s ready to go.

Rick Michelena is the founding member of the Tejas RC Association, which began in January 1986. Tejas is the old Indian word meaning friendship, Michelena said. Michelena is a huge fan of World War II aircraft and has 22 model planes in his maintenance shop. His largest plane, an F-7 Tiger Cat, has a 10-foot wingspan, weights about 55 pounds and is powered by two 77cc gas engines. “That’s like a motorcycle’s engine,” he said.

After Michelena, a former United Airlines pilot, spent Sunday morning in his maintenance office, looking for a leak in one of his radio-controlled model airplanes, he said, “I could hear it, but I just needed to find it. It helps to be somewhat of a repairman if you’re going to do this hobby.”

Winter Texans to vote for Entertainers of the Year

Winter Texans are asked to vote for their favorite entertainers who perform in the Winter Texan parks and resorts in the Rio Grande Valley.

Each year, the Winter Texan Times conducts a poll of Winter Texans, allowing them to vote for their favorite entertainers to decide who will receive top awards at the Valley Star Awards Show, which is hosted by Robert and Billie Ferguson.

A ballot listing the nominees for Entertainer or Group of the Year overall, Male Vocalist of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year and eight other awards appears on page 22 of today’s edition of the Winter Texan Times. The other award categories include Gospel Group of the Year, Musical Group of the Year (not related), Family Vocal Group of the Year, Duet Musical Group of the Year, Rock n Roll Band of the Year, Country Western Band of the Year, Individual/Small Band/Variety Act of the Year, and Novelty or Comedy Act of the Year.

Those who fill out a ballot this year are asked to vote for someone in every category, if you are familiar with the nominees. In the past, some ballots have come in with only one category marked. Also, be sure to write in your choice for Entertainer or Group of the Year. This can be

any of the individuals or groups on the ballot, from any category. This year, this award is open to groups as well as individual entertainers.

The Valley Star Awards are designed to honor the top entertainers and groups who are performing in the Rio Grande Valley this year, said Robert Ferguson.

Entertainers who are not coming to the Valley this year are not eligible. The Fergusons compiled a comprehensive list of all of this year’s Winter Texan entertainers and the park activity directors voted to determine this year’s top four nominees in each category. Only the top four nominees appear on the ballot.

To vote for your favorite Valley entertainers, fill out the ballot in today’s paper and mail it to 1217 N. Conway, Mission TX 78572, or, vote online at www.wttrgv. com. Only one vote per person is allowed.

MMA to hold Iwo Jima Parade Feb. 18

The Marine Military Academy in Harlingen will hold its annual Iwo Jima Parade Saturday, Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. on the MMA Parade Ground.

This year marks the 72nd anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. Open to the public, this event is a tribute to the courage and sacrifice made by The Greatest Generation to preserve freedom around the world. Because of the subtropical climate of South Texas, MMA is the only organization in the country that holds a battalion-size parade on the actual anniversary (Feb. 19, 1945) of the Battle of Iwo Jima. Last year, more than 350 people attended this event.

There will be special reserved seating for Iwo Jima survivors in front of the parade stand, which directly faces the historic Iwo Jima Monument. During the pa-

Event-goers are encouraged to stop by the Iwo Jima Museum & Gift Shop after the parade to watch a video depicting the Battle of Iwo Jima. They are also encouraged to view the Iwo Jima Monument and the gravesite of Cpl. Harlon Block before or after the parade.

Since April 1982, MMA has been home to the Iwo Jima Monument. The magnificent statue depicts six Marines raising the American flag on Feb. 23, 1945, during the Battle of Iwo Jima. Block, the Marine depicted at the base of the flagstaff, was a native of Weslaco, Texas.

VSO presents ‘Star Wars’ Pops Concert Take a trip to the stars (spacesuits optional) during the Valley Symphony Orchestra’s fourth concert of the 65th anniversary season. “Star Wars and Galactic Pops,” will be presented on Friday, Feb. 3, at the new McAllen Performing Arts Center at 8 p.m.

“Star Wars and Galactic Pops” is a concert experience that music lovers will not want to miss. Fans of all ages are invited to participate in this far-out tribute to some of the classic sci-fi masterpieces.

A nod to all things celestial, Music Director and Conductor, Peter Dabrowski, has chosen some exciting intergalactic pieces to transport the audience into the cosmos. Such pieces include “Also Sprach Zarathustra” with introduction

by Richard Strauss. Most listeners today recognize Strauss’ piece by its famous opening prologue, which was immortalized in Stanley Kubrick’s classic film 2001 “A Space Odyssey.”

Another great and familiar movie soundtrack, “Star Trek Through the Years” by Jerry Goldsmith will astound

the audience. Goldsmith’s music currently spans 13 feature films and six long-running television series in Hollywood, while adding to the enjoyment and dedication of millions of fans around the world.

Composer, John Williams’ “Star Wars Suite” remains among the most highly recognizable and popular pieces of symphonic POPs in the world. The Valley Symphony Orchestra will transport our listeners to the yearning melody of Princess Leia, the relentless angularity of the Imperial March, and the bold fanfares of the main title theme that we so fondly recall from the full length feature films of yesterday and today.

“One of the guys came up to me after and said he had six guys who were going to Hobbytown right after to by some race cars,” Langseth said. “That’s good for our park and the whole Valley.”

Langseth added that the general manager at the park indicated it was about 90 percent full during a recent month.

“We had another couple come to look at the gun range,” Langseth said. “When we turned on the lights they said ‘Oh, wow, we didn’t know this was available.

We may have chosen this park if we had known.’”

“We may have to add amenities and activities that will appeal to the new group,” said the UTRGV’s Simpson. “Maybe they are baby boomers and they don’t like Glenn Miller but the older ones do. You have to figure out how to accommodate both groups and how to make it happen.”

While some parks are claiming a growth in numbers, others are stagnant or even shutting their doors, said Simpson.

According to the last two Winter Texans reports done by Simpson, only about three percent of the survey respondents have been first-timers.

“That means we are not getting new people here,” she said. “To attract new

Simpson suggested doing at least two things — be appealing and get the word out. It does no good to make changes for the new generation if the new generation never hears about those new activities and amenities, she said.

“We have to get the word out from North Texas to Canada, it’s not enough to do it just here,” Simpson said. “I think the communities are making a lot of changes and there are a lot of things happening here to meet the needs of both the longtime Winter Texans and the new ones, but there needs to be more marketing and more spreading the word.”

Simpson said she would be more than interested in helping create another survey to report what baby boomers are interested in, especially if it will help attract them to South Texas and put a stop to the declining population.

“The baby boomer generation may settle for small,” Simpson said, referring to responses from the survey, “but they want nice.”

Anklam said Llano Grande seems to have found a good equation — having a lot of dances, shows, activities and amenities.

And at least one Alamo Rec-Veh Park resident likes the variety of activities available to him.

“There’s a new generation of Winter Texans coming,” said Langseth. “There’s going to be a lot of change.”

TEXAS CITRUS FIESTA From pg. 1

There is a great lineup of bands including Whiskey D, the Blackbirds, Invazzion, and Buck N Crazy, along with a number of food vendors, arts and crafts and other attractions to make it worth a visit. The annual Citrus Youth Show will be located in a tent on the site so visitors can see the many varieties of citrus that the youth are exhibiting for the competition. After the judging is complete it will be possible to buy citrus used in the displays at discounted prices.

The annual Vaquero Cook-off is also held in Rotary Park adjacent to the Leo Pena La Placita Park. This year there will be an all-girl cooking team so go out and see if they can outcook those cowboys over an open flame! They will be judged on pan de campo, beans, pork ribs, fajitas ad peach cobbler.

Parade of Oranges At 3 p.m. the annual TCF Parade of Oranges will roll down Conway Avenue going south from Griffin Parkway (FM 495) to 4th Street. One of the most popular Valley parades, the Parade of Oranges will feature several floats decorated with citrus and other Valley grown agricultural products. These floats compete for prizes and honors in the Valley Products

category. Winter Texans have become an important part of the Fiesta and there are two float categories for the Winter Texan mobile home and RV parks: one for parks with more than 200 spaces and the other for parks with less than 200 spaces.

Governor Francisco Cabeza de Vaca of Tamaulipas, Mexico will be Grand Marshal of the Parade and the new King Citrus (to be named Thursday night at the Coronation) will be Parade Marshal.

There will be dignitaries from Mission and the surrounding communities that take part in the parade each year.

Church groups, Boy Schools, dance schools, and other organizations will have floats in the parade. There will be marching high school and junior high bands participating with drill teams and ROTC units. The Citrus Fiesta duchesses will be riding in convertibles.

Because the Parade of Oranges with its unique citrus floats is one of the most popular parades in the Rio Grande Valley, people will start seeking places to view the parade along the parade route by mid-morning. So, come early to find a good spot to watch the parade.

While most people bring their own lawn chairs, there will be chairs and bleachers for rent for $5 in various locations. The bleachers near BBVA Compass Bank in the downtown area are reserved for vis-

iting dignitaries, but the youth group at Conway Avenue Baptist Church will be renting chairs at the beginning of the parade route on the corner of FM 495 and Conway. First come, first served. The Boy Scouts and others will have chairs for rent along Conway Ave. between 9th and 10th Street. Visitors can come early to rent their chairs, then return shortly before the parade begins. But plan to get to your seats before all the streets are closed; otherwise you will have difficulty getting to your desired location.

All streets crossing Conway, from Griffin Parkway (FM 495) to 1st Street, will be closed at noon, except for the following major streets, which will be closed

at 2 p.m.: Kika de la Garza Loop, East Tom Landry, 6th Street, 4th Street and 1st Street.

Vendors will be selling food and drinks from 12 p.m. along the parade route. Cotton candy and other treats will be available. Look for the famous Texas Citrus Fiesta top sirloin barbecue sandwiches, a tasty fiesta tradition that was started by the late Don Lester many years ago. The barbecue will be served from barbecue trailers being pulled by pickup trucks up and down Conway before the parade time.

Bring your lawn chairs, sun shades and sun block and enjoy a great day at the parade on Saturday.

Grande Valley. They are inviting Winter Texans to submit 45- to 60-second videos in their “Life in the Rio” video contest.

The videos can be taken using a cell phone and emailed to South Texas Tourism.

First prize for the winning video will be $200. Second and third place winners will receive a Happy Senior gift basket. The deadline for submissions is Feb. 22 at 5 p.m. The winners will be announced in the Winter Texan Times on March 17. Videos will be judged by the South Texas Tourism board. Participants can enter as many videos as they wish from different events or locations. Each video should identify the city and location they are filming and tell why the person creating the Valley loves the Rio Grande Valley.

Winners will be notified by e-mail and will have 10 days to claim their prizes.

Join in the fun and help South Texas Tourism convince friends and neighbors back home the Rio Grande Valley is the place to spend the winter.

As an example, if you were shooting a short video of the Texas Citrus Fiesta, you could say something like this: “Here I am in sunny South Texas watching a fascinating parade while my neighbors back home are digging out of the snow.”

Another option is the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild Show at South Padre Island. But be sure to ask permission before filming any of the quilts. Those who travel to South Padre Island might want to take a shot or two of the beach or the birds along the coast and talk about how many birds winter here too.

Not attending either event? Try a field trip to the zoo, go on a historical walk in Brownsville, or take some nice shots at the golf course. There are endless opportunities to make short videos of Winter Texans having fun.

which should create some interesting quilt designs. The show will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is $10 a day or $15 for both days.

In addition to the quilts on display to be judged, there will be vendors with sewing supplies, materials, sewing equipment and the latest in quilting machines.

There will be speakers teaching specialized skills and demonstrations of quilting techniques. There will be door prizes and a raffle quilt, which is referred to as the Opportunity Quilt. This year’s quilt is Jamestown Landing; the pattern was created by Bonnie Hunter.

There are several different categories to be judged. Wall Hanging category includes any entry that is pieced, embroidered, appliqued, whole cloth, hand or machine quilted that is designed to be hung on a wall.

Quilts may be crib size, lap size, twin, full, queen or king sizes, depending on their measurements.

Apparel and personal accessories include clothing, jackets, christening gowns, skirts, vests, and accessories such as purses, bags, totes, shoes slippers and hats.

Home Décor includes items such as placemats, table runners, potholders, dolls, fabric bowls, and children’s toys.

There is also a Challenge item to make a quilt of no more that 144 inches total perimeter (usually a 36” by 36” square).

The quilt must be inspired by a Beatle song or any Beatle representation including guitar, drums, hair, music, etc. Each must be labeled with the song or inspiration that helped create the quilt.
