Snowbird Extravaganza brings top Canadian talent to McAllen
This year’s annual Snowbird Extravaganza feature a star-studded cast of some of Canada’s most famous performers. The event will be held Tuesday, Jan. 31 and Wednesday, Feb. 1 at the McAllen Convention Center. This is a free event that will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Performers this year include Ian Thomas, Jimmy Flynn, Michelle Wright, Sean Emery, Tom Leadbeater, and The Stampeders. The show includes the most successful rock and roll musician in Canada, Ian Thomas. His most memorable song was “Painted Ladies” in 1973, which became an American Top 40 hit. Also very popular was his song “Runner” recorded by the Manfred Mann’s Earth Band. In 1974 he was named “Most Promising Male Vocalist of the Year” by Juno. The Mission Quilt Show now on display at Mission Historical Museum opened Jan. 14 and it will run through Saturday, Feb 11. It is located in the annex building (the old post office building) at 200 E. Tom Landry in Mission, next to the museum’s main building. Admission is free. There are 16 quilts in three categories: hand-quilted, machine quilted and wall hangings. Visitors are welcome to come see the show and then vote for their favorite quilt and help select the People’s Choice Award. See MHM Quilt Show pg. 40

The 80th annual Texas Citrus Fiesta will have three major Fiesta events this weekend as part of the annual citrus celebration. These include the Citrus Fiesta Royal Coronation on Thursday, Jan. 26, and the Fiesta Fun Fair and Parade of Oranges on Saturday, Jan. 28. The Royal Coronation wil be held at 7 p.m. in the Neuhaus Center on the campus of Mission High School. Young ladies from all over the Rio Grande Valley will be competing for title of Queen Citrianna LXXXI. This is the event where they are presented in their lovely ball gowns.
