Saying “Shalom” purposefully means to offer a peace treaty, a pledge to live for the other’s wellbeing, a covenant to desire and seek the good life of God’s favor together.

The Shalom Zone Ministry was developed in 1992 as a nationwide effort within the United Methodist Church to create effective ministries in an urban setting. In 1994 Central United Methodist Church developed its own Shalom Ministries.

Shalom was founded on the conviction that as we become skilled at the art of caring, we learn how to live at peace as a human being.

Key Components of Shalom’s Volunteer Mission Shalom is committed to providing volunteers with the opportunity to engage enthusiastically with patrons in

conversation.

This

deeply

personally rewarding and enlightening. This interaction provides hope for our patrons that they can live in our community without judgment based on socioeconomic standing.

Shalom is committed to blending volunteers from the general community with our patrons. We feel that volunteering is empowering for our patrons and we celebrate the skills, devotion and work ethic that they demonstrate.

Shalom is committed to supporting youth, high school and college age, in service learning. It is our belief the education of youth through service creates broader effects in the community for years to come. We believe in fostering compassion and open-mindedness.

We believe in drawing volunteers from all walks of life. We formally draw support from nearly 20 churches, with individual volunteers from all faiths.

How to Communicate Using Supportive Communication For some people, coming to Shalom and serving is like serving people from a different world. This guide is designed to help you enter conversations with the community of Shalom. Once you get comfortable making conversations with our patrons, we have confidence you will meet some people you will be glad to know.

2. Food Safety All volunteers are required to acquire a food handler’s permit within 14 days of service.

Assistance with 10.00 fee available.

All volunteers must read the Food Safety workers procedures book-lit before volunteering.

3. Behavior and Conduct Shalom is considered a “Safe Church Zone”.

It is our expectation that all volunteers uphold an environment that is warm and supportive of both volunteers and patrons, while maintaining proper boundaries at all times. Read the guidelines in this booklet about “Supportive Communication”.

Shalom is a Drug Free Work Place note all volunteers are expected to be clean & sober during service.

Attention Newsletter Recipients Shalom is going Green Thank you for your interest in Shalom Ministries. This is the first issue of “News of Shalom”, a Quarterly Newsletter, in 2010. This newsletter provides updates on volunteer opportunities, fundraising events, and current needs for monetary and in kind donations. We also strive to update you on the ongoing ministry and the need for free meals in this community.

We thank you for being aware of the needs of the homeless and low income in downtown Spokane. By receiving a newsletter, you are part of a network that fuels over 30% of the funds needed for Shalom to serve on a bare bones budget. Shalom is proud to be an agency that addresses tremendous need in the community with only one part time paid staff person. This is possible because of the dedication of hundreds of volunteers each month, many giving 20-30 hours of service each week. This year through the support of donors and volunteers, Shalom will serve hearty breakfasts and dinners year

round.

We are responsible stewards of the funds entrusted to us and we want to be sure that we maximize opportunities to spend the funds on service, rather than overhead costs.

We are mindful of the cost and labors involved in producing this newsletter, and we want to prevent wastefulness of paper. Consequently we are developing of a supplementary email newsletter for those who are proficient with technology.

Donna Van Tine of Colfax UMC organized a group of six individuals from her community to make a special road trip to serve at Shalom for a Monday dinner. We were honored to meet this benevolent and effervescent group.

They were willing to execute everything from dish washing to deep cleaning; from serving pie to providing community by having dinner with a guest.

We are privileged to be supported by Churches area wide ranging from Colfax to Connell and even Moscow Idaho.

Thank you for your contribution to an area with need so great. Shalom serves thousands of homeless in the span of a year and for each meal 100’s and a time.

Thank you Manito United Methodist Church The second annual Interplayer’s fundraiser brings in over$1,500 for Shalom Ministries. This fundraiser was spearheaded by Manito United Methodist Churches’ Program Life Committee.

This fundraiser is a cooperative effort in which the program life committee sells tickets to an Interlayer’s play as a fundraiser. Program Life also coordinates a raffle and brings bakery items to sell at intermission. We would like to extend special thanks Liz West and Anne Reinhart for their efforts.

Shalom Ministries also extends gratitude to Interlayer’s Theater for providing quality theater entertainment and gracious support of Shaloms’ efforts to end hunger in this community.

If your church or organization takes inspiration from the work of the program life committee and/or has an idea for a simple fundraiser to support Shalom; please contact the program manager at (509)455-9019.

This is a great way to contribute for churches that are passionate about giving and have an active committee like “Program Life” to coordinate events. This is also a great way to give for churches that have more people power than dollars to give.

Thank you Volunteers Every day volunteers at Shalom go about the active business of serving hundreds of people in the space of an hour; and around the hectic on goings find time for laughter, deep discussion, mutual support and more.

Shalom’s volunteers serve with compassion and dedication, YOU serve as a community hundreds of people strong, giving hundreds and even thousands of hours collectively each month. Every volunteer gives an important contribution, whether you serve every day or once a month you are an important piece of our community.

Volunteer Service Opportunities Open to You In January 2010 Shalom set a record for service hours, totaling 1300 hours, but we still have opportunities for service open for you. These are our current needs: • Servers for breakfast: Monday and Tuesday mornings 7:15-8:40am who are interested in serving on a

consistent basis.

• Volunteer groups interested in doing deep cleaning outside our regular service time (a great project or one

time contribution for 6-10 people especially youth )

• Volunteer groups to come and offer community to guests during any serving times.

• Volunteers to clean the kitchen and ensure church security after breakfast.

• Any Mornings: Monday –Thursday, 8:30am-10:30am,

a great opportunity for a group or individual that wants to volunteer regularly.

• A volunteer, with a truck or van, to do food pick-up’s Tuesday mornings from three locations.

• People with interest in fundraising and development

by Service on the Board of Directors.

• Volunteers to serve or cook during the summer when Shalom has previously closed.

• A person interested in volunteer coordination to being duties in August of this year. 10-15 hr commitment each week. label with written request in the return address envelope provided.

The Gonzaga Spring Break Program Every year at this time a group of Gonzaga students makes a decision of how to spend their time over the Spring break. A group of 17 student decided they would hit the streets and support local non-profits serving the homeless.

These students serve dinner on Monday night and sleep over in the church then serve breakfast on Tuesday morning. For both the students and guests this is a powerful experience. Every time these students arrive the guests at Shalom are every thankful for the polite humility of youth that want to listen, and truly hear, their stories.

For the students, they say they responded emotionally, and intellectually. One young lady was amazed how and elderly man in a wheel chair was a fountain of information, she said he “was so wise it would take a while for her to process all the things he said”.

Shalom Ministries is very passionate about a model of service that integrates a community of students or church goers with the homeless population to eat and talk together. Many of the people we serve are in great need of community, not just food.

If you would like to bring a group of volunteers for the singular purpose of providing companionship to Shaloms’ dinner or breakfast program, please call 455-9019 to set up a service day.

Thank you Manito United Methodist Church The second annual Interplayer’s fundraiser brings in over$1,500 for Shalom Ministries. This fundraiser was spearheaded by Manito United Methodist Churches’ Program Life Committee.

This fundraiser is a cooperative effort in which the program life committee sells tickets to an Interlayer’s play as a fundraiser. Program Life also coordinates a raffle and brings bakery items to sell at intermission. We would like to extend special thanks Liz West and Anne Reinhart for their efforts.

Shalom Ministries also extends gratitude to Interlayer’s Theater for providing quality theater entertainment and gracious support of Shaloms’ efforts to end hunger in this community.

If your church or organization takes inspiration from the work of the program life committee and/or has an idea for a simple fundraiser to support Shalom; please contact the program manager at (509)455-9019.

This is a great way to contribute for churches that are passionate about giving and have an active committee like “Program Life” to coordinate events. This is also a great way to give for churches that have more people power than dollars to give.

Attention Newsletter Recipients Shalom is going Green Thank you for your interest in Shalom Ministries. This is the first issue of “News of Shalom”, a Quarterly Newsletter, in 2010. This newsletter provides updates on volunteer opportunities, fundraising events, and current needs for monetary and in kind donations. We also strive to update you on the ongoing ministry and the need for free meals in this community.

We thank you for being aware of the needs of the homeless and low income in downtown Spokane. By receiving a newsletter, you are part of a network that fuels over 30% of the funds needed for Shalom to serve on a bare bones budget. Shalom is proud to be an agency that addresses tremendous need in the community with only one part time paid staff person. This is possible because of the dedication of hundreds of volunteers each month, many giving 20-30 hours of service each week. This year through the support of donors and volunteers, Shalom will serve hearty breakfasts and dinners year

round.

We are responsible stewards of the funds entrusted to us and we want to be sure that we maximize opportunities to spend the funds on service, rather than overhead costs.

We are mindful of the cost and labors involved in producing this newsletter, and we want to prevent wastefulness of paper. Consequently we are developing of a supplementary email newsletter for those who are proficient with technology.

Donna Van Tine of Colfax UMC organized a group of six individuals from her community to make a special road trip to serve at Shalom for a Monday dinner. We were honored to meet this benevolent and effervescent group.

They were willing to execute everything from dish washing to deep cleaning; from serving pie to providing community by having dinner with a guest.

We are privileged to be supported by Churches area wide ranging from Colfax to Connell and even Moscow Idaho.

Thank you for your contribution to an area with need so great. Shalom serves thousands of homeless in the span of a year and for each meal 100’s and a time.
