Summer’s here – apparently! But whatever the weather we can look forward to a series of bright seasonal events courtesy of the good people of Winchcombe and the surrounding villages.

From science days and charity teas, to beer, food and fizz festivals, fundraising fetes, craft days and shows.

June, July and August bring a wealth of events that offer family fun and live entertainment to suit all tastes.

We’ve also lots of good news to relate. Our town defibrillator appeal was a huge success – see the update on page 5 – and we’ve award-winning singers, clubs and a top ranking playgroup. Two new retail businesses are opening in the town centre and if you’re planning a summer barbecue check out Winchcombe Burger Company on page 9.

Local News WINCHCOMBE PLAYGROUP IS TOP FOR TOTS A few places are still available at Winchcombe’s top-rated Playgroup for children to start in the new autumn term.

The Back Lane registered charity, that was rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted again last winter, is taking bookings from parents who would like to enrol their tots for morning, afternoon, or full day sessions starting any time in the next academic year.

It is the second time running that the playgroup, catering for youngsters aged from two-and-a-half years to pre-school age, has received an Ofsted outstanding rating, its first was in 2010/11.

Playgroup Manager Arno Ferreira, is supported by a team of 12 key staff and volunteers and together they run a host of play activities and learning sessions including Forest School (in an outdoors, natural environment) art, cooking, food play, Supastrikers football, Boogie Beat and music and movement.

He said: “We have fantastic facilities here for the children where they can socialise, learn, play, both indoors and out in a happy and

relaxed atmosphere. There’s lots of space, a messy play area, a reading tent, computer table, toys, a large playground, a forest area and plenty of cars, trikes and scooters!

“We like to prepare children for school life and have close links with the Winchcombe Abbey Primary School. Our pre-schoolers go there to get used to the building and meet staff before they start school which

BILL’S A BLUES WINNER Alderton’s veteran folk and blues musician Bill Pullen has scooped the William Bailey Folk Award at this year’s Chipping Norton Music Festival.

Bill, who has been singing and playing blues harmonica for 40 years, was judged and awarded the accolade by folk legend John Kirkpatrick – winner of the 2010 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

John said Bill’s quality of performance, communication with the audience and unaccompanied voice was outstanding and even better than when he won the award in 2010. Bill, who with Dave Camp makes up the duo Blues Anoraks, said: “Winning the Bailey trophy again this year means more than it did in 2010. I tended to look on it as beginner’s luck then, but the advice and encouragement I’ve received from friends and supporters means I’d now like to build on this success.”

Bill has a series of gigs lined up through the summer including a beer festival at The Woolpack Inn at Slad, at the end of June and he also hopes to take part in some of the Laurie Lee centenary celebrations in July. He will also be appearing at The Fleece Inn, Bretforton over the August Bank Holiday weekend at its beer and blues fest.

BE DEFIB READY Generous Winchcombe residents and businesses have together raised more than £6,000 in a matter of weeks to buy and install three Defibrillators in key locations around the town.

There is now a Community Public Access Defibrillator just off the High Street, in the alleyway entrance to the Guide Hall, at Abbey Fields Community Centre in Back Lane and at the Fire Station in Gretton Road.

In a joint funded project with the South West Ambulance Authority, a fourth defibrillator has also been installed at the Winchcombe School Sports Hub. More than 100 people have so far taken part in awareness sessions on emergency first aid and using the equipment. A fourth evening is planned on Monday 30th June at the Methodist Church Hall at 7 pm.

Winchcombe’s first Festival of Fizz will add some serious sparkle to the town at the end of July. The two-day event will mark the 400th anniversary of Winchcombe-born scholar Christopher Merrett, who discovered how to add sparkle and bubbles to wine.

There will be samples of fizz, cider, perry and sparkling wines as well as soft drinks, food, walks, talks, demonstrations, entertainment, music and a Family Fun day Sunday.

Craftsmen and women will be putting their wares on show at a family fair and barbecue being held at Dumbleton Village Club.

The day-long event from 10.30 am – 3.30 pm, includes up-cycled furniture, fashions, jewellery, cards, textiles, gifts, bags, vintage ware, ironworks and art. For children, there’s face painting, games and an all-day sizzling barbecue. Free parking, admission £1, under 12s free.

READY TO RUN? Warm up warm up for the annual Winchcombe 10k Hill Climb and 5k Sudeley Fun Run – both starting and finishing in the grounds of Sudeley Castle.

Authentic burgers are a serious business

Imagine a summer evening, cold beer in hand, the mouth-watering scent of burger s sizzling on the barbecue - it seems an unlikely place for the launch of a new business.

I

n fact, even Jeff Davies himself didn’t realise exactly what he was starting when he casually made some burgers for a barbecue with friends last summer.

“I had never cooked or done anything like this before. It started with me just making burgers for friends. They really liked them so I was asked a few times to make some more,” said Jeff.

Now, almost one year on and a lot of burger tasting later, he is about to launch his new career as The Winchcombe Burger Company with his business partner and chef, Henry Peters.

“Henry is a qualified chef and has been in the catering industry for a while. I guess I provide the raw talent and he brings the knowledge and know how!”

Quality of meat and locally sourced ingredients are paramount. Beef comes from Martin Gilder and Sudeley Farms and is hung for 28 days for maximum tenderness and flavour; lamb is also coming from Mr Gilder and pork will be locally sourced Gloucester Old Spot, so no meat will have travelled more than a few miles and all will have grazed the fields around Winchcombe.

Jeff and Henry create everything from scratch, including their own relishes from

their kitchen on Orchard Trading Estate, Toddington (from where, incidentally, they can keep an eye on the Longhorn cattle which provide their beef!)

“We basically come up with ideas. Henry is good at knowing what might go with what then we go from there. We do a lot of tasting but we haven’t yet produced anything that we really didn’t like,” added Jeff.

Choose from flavours including beef, horseradish and red onion, Moroccan lamb, beef and stilton, pork, apple and honey and pork and chorizo. Maintaining the local flavour each burger is named after nearby villages - The Gretton Burger, The Toddington, The Didbrook, The Alderton, The Cleeve and of course their signature burger is The Winchcombe. With summer approaching and charcoal at the ready, it seems like The Winchcombe Burger Co is really on to a winner.

The Winchcombe Burger Co will be offering these and more tantalizing flavours at Sudeley Castle’s first Food Festival on July 11th - 13th and at Winchcombe’s Festival of Fizz weekend on July 26th – 27th.

4 Stanway Burgers 4 Ciabatta rolls 2 Small red onions, thinly sliced Dash of balsamic vinegar 1 Beef tomato 1 Bulb of fennel 450g Sweet potatoes Mayonnaise 2-3 strands of Saffron Spinach leaves to serve

TO MAKE 1.

6 -8 hours before main preparation mix the saffron with the mayonnaise; stir regularly to allow the flavours to fuse.

2.

Place the sliced red onion in a frying pan on a low to medium heat; soften without colouring for approximately 10 minutes. Once softened, add vinegar to caramelise.

3. Peel and cut the sweet potato into chips.

4. Thinly slice fennel and beef tomato.

TO COOK 1. Season and cook burgers on a BBQ, griddle pan or frying pan.

2. Cut ciabatta rolls in half and lightly toast.

3. Fry sweet potatoes until golden and crispy.

TO SERVE 1.

Smear a spoonful of saffron mayonnaise on bottom of toasted ciabatta, place burger on top and add sliced beef tomato, fennel and balsamic onions.

2. Serve with sweet potato chips, sprinkled lightly with sea salt, baby spinach leaves and coleslaw.

Kate launched the business in Gretton Road after spending nine years working with dogs, both grooming and at a boarding kennels. Kate said: “I started the business because I wanted to improve the quality and service of dog grooming in the area and to work in Winchcombe, where I grew up. Animal life Wonderful wildlife can be fatal for pets For excited dogs, adders are nothing more than “a wriggling stick.”

Welcome to our new Animal Life page which focuses on a topical issue relating to our furr y friends – both domesticated and wild. We launch this first feature with some wise words about pets, wildlife and disease, from Winchcombe vet Ian Maisey.

W

inchcombe has a particularly rich flora and fauna, which is a delight for residents who take an interest in these things, (myself included), but is a mixed blessing for the domestic animals under our care.

We see far more wildlife related disease than most practices. We are a national hot spot for adder bites with Cleeve Hill having a good population of adders and Winchcombe a good population of dogs.

Adders are active through the summer months but are particularly dangerous in the spring having accumulated large amounts of venom over the winter. Dogs get bitten mostly on the legs or head when they step on or deliberately pick up the snake, (a wriggling stick, what’s not to like?) At worst, we have seen a large healthy dog die in a matter of hours (bitten in April on the tongue). If your dog is bitten, or you think it might have been, get veterinary treatment without delay. Leave the wound alone. Leave the snake alone.

Pain killers and anti-inflammatory treatment will help to some extent, but the most effective treatment in our experience is the European viper anti-venom. Its use in man is controversial, but in dogs the effects are spectacular. We have not had a fatal case since it has become available for routine use on bitten dogs.

Most wildlife related problems however, are due to disease transmission from a wild unvaccinated population to domestic animals. Dogs and foxes are closely related and can share the same diseases. Canine hepatitis, for example, is so prevalent in our foxes that wildlife rescue charities have to vaccinate communally-kept fox cubs with the dog vaccine or they will succumb to infection. There is no avoiding dog / fox contact. All things foxy seem to be a magnet for dogs. Some of our clients have resorted to treating their local foxes for sarcoptic mange to avoid regular trips to the vet with a mangy dog.

Cats are similarly at risk. They can suffer from a vole pox virus when they hunt voles. This virus can also affect cows’ teats, (then called cow pox). This was the source of “vaccinia” which allowed Gloucestershire’s courageous genius Dr

Jenner to protect humans from smallpox in 1796. Some argue the cumulative effect of this has saved more human lives than all other medical advances put together.

Every year, we have tragedies with pet rabbits contracting myxomatosis from the wild population. It is transmitted by fleas or even mosquitoes so there is no necessity for close contact for transmission to occur.

Many people are unaware that their rabbit is at risk, even if it is an indoor house rabbit.

Myxomatosis is almost always fatal, but is easily prevented with a single injection of rabbit myxomatosis vaccine.

It’s not just humans who have benefited from Dr Jenner’s big idea all those years ago.”

Meet a special team of nurses w Reporter Andrea Riley talks to some of Kate’s Home Nurses.

“Sometimes it is just about sitting with the patient, holding their hand, saying nothing, just being there.”

T

his is just a tiny part of the open-ended job description for a very special team of nurses who make a real difference to the final days and weeks of terminally ill people in Winchcombe.

In fact ‘job description’ fails to convey exactly how much care, dignity, support and friendship the Kate’s Home Nursing team provides for people, in addition to their highly experienced nursing skills.

Nick Puffett, who you may recognise from his day job as a Nurse Practitioner at Winchcombe Medical Centre, and Lisa May are two of 20 nurses who work as a ‘bank’ for Kate’s Home Nursing charity and are on call as and when required for people in the town and across the North Cotswolds.

“People are referred to Kate’s Home Nursing via their doctor or the district nurse once they have been told they are dying and they have expressed a wish to stay in their home. Because of our very specialist skills in palliative care, we get involved in the patient’s last weeks, or even last few days,” explained Nick.

As well as providing palliative care and support and staying with the patient and their family overnight or as long as required, Nick and the other nurses are able to administer drugs to help control symptoms such as nausea and pain, but most of all, Nick describes his work as ‘good old fashioned nursing’.

“We only get one chance to get the care right. We always make sure we treat people

with dignity and respect and always explain what we are doing and why.

“Sometimes the patient may be sleeping or semi-conscious and our role then is to just be there, supporting the family. We are entirely flexible. We often just sit and talk to the family, if that is what they want.”

The nature of the job suggests it could be very sad for the nurses, all of whom are hand-picked for their previous experience and skill and all have a specialist interest in palliative care. So does this prepare them for taking care of dying people in their last few days?

“There are times when you might think this is a really sad time and a difficult job, but you would be surprised by the amount of times we do have a laugh with the patient and their

However we always ensure of course, that we use the funds to their best effect and fulfil the charity’s brief. The care we provide is, and always will be, free to anyone who needs it. We have a dedicated band of fundraisers who are brilliant and we’re also supported by many amazing non-committee members who raise money for Kate’s through ongoing events and efforts.”

About Kate’s Kate’s Home Nursing is a registered charity set up to nurse patients in their own home through the last stage of illness and to support their families.

It was set up in 1995 after Stow-onthe-Wold resident Kate King became ill and was unable to remain at home due to a lack of appropriate and available nursing care. The area’s rural outlook makes it difficult for the national charities to provide this care, so Kate challenged her nurses and doctors to do something about it.

family. Laughing sometimes is a normal reaction. That is what we say to the family.

It is OK to laugh, cry, feel sad and feel happy,” explained Nick. “ You come to realise that death is a normal part of life and we are privileged because we are there with a lot of patients when they do die. We can make that time a lot easier for the patient and for their family and our experience means we can support them during this potentially worrying time.”

None of us want to contemplate the ‘what ifs’ in life, but what a blessing to know that such care and reassurance is there should we ever need it.

And attracting nurses to work for Kate’s Home Nursing is never a problem.

“We have never had to advertise.

We have a lovely, inspired group of nurses who come from all backgrounds including midwifery, cardiac rehab and district nursing.

Our nurses have to be very special people. Not only do they need to be able to support the patient but it is also about setting up the family to continue forward after the patient has died,” added Heather.

The charity does receive some NHS funding and in the coming financial year expects to receive about 20% of its expected £250,000 running costs. It will rely on fundraising and donations to fund the other 80%.

Over the past 12 months, it has provided 4,500 hours of free nursing care to between 70 and 80 patients, with an increasing number coming from Winchcombe.

Local News Caring Centre commemorates Scores of hand-knitted poppies will form part of a stunning exhibition of World War I artefacts at a fundraising afternoon tea in aid of Help for Heroes being organised by members of Winchcombe Day Care Centre.

The exhibition and afternoon tea on Monday 4th August will include original WWI photographs and memorabilia from Black Watch soldier Robert Mitchell who was killed aged 20. His medals, Christmas box and the letter written to his father telling of his death will all be on show, along with information on battles and pictures from the Somme.

The centrepiece of the exhibition at the Langley Close centre will include a ‘Lest we

forget’ display and wreath knitted entirely of red poppies by a centre supporter.

Centre Manager Carol Baker, pictured, said: “The members wanted to commemorate the fallen of World War 1 and it seemed a good opportunity to raise money for our modern day serving heroes at the same time.”

The exhibition is open from 2 pm to 4 pm and admission is £4 to include tea and homemade cake with all proceeds going to Help for Heroes. Members will also entertain guests with songs from the era.

Carol said: “Visitors of all ages are welcome. We would very much like local people to come and visit us, view the exhibition and see what the Day Centre is all about. You might be quite surprised what we get up to!”

STEP OUT – AND SOCIALISE A popular national scheme has hit the streets of Winchcombe and Prestbury – and local residents are being invited to join it!

Walking for Health aims to provide free local walks for local people with all abilities catered for in a friendly, supportive group. Walks are between 30 minutes to an hour and are taken by volunteer walk leaders and those joining in can even take dogs on leads or grandchildren!

Gerald Seal helped launch Walking for Health in conjunction with Cheltenham Borough Council. He said: “We all know exercise is good for us and what better way to exercise than a social walk in your own locality. There are several leaders per walk so a group can be split to allow people to go at their own pace if necessary, whether it’s faster or slower.

The walks are very sociable, with many new friendships made and they are particularly suited to older people who may not go out as often as they’d like.”

A CHAMPION! Carer support worker Tina Clark is helping to improve the public’s understanding of dementia – in a new volunteer role for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Tina, who lives on Cleeve Hill, has undergone training to become a Dementia Friends Champion and is keen to spread the word about the condition.

She said: “Our role is to encourage our families, friends, colleagues and the local community to understand a little more about dementia, what it’s like to live with dementia and then turn that understanding into action.”

Tina is already a trained Dementia Link Worker and as a community support worker has been supporting people living with dementia and their families for many years.

Tina said: “People with dementia don’t just lose their memories, they can also lose their friends because they start behaving differently, but they actually need those friends more than ever.

The word dementia describes a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problemsolving or language. Dementia is caused when the brain is damaged by diseases, such asAlzheimer’s disease or a series of strokes.

Dementia is progressive, which means the symptoms will gradually get worse.”

S

pain has become one of the world’s most exciting wine producers. Its mix of innovation and respect for tradition leads to characterful wines from a wealth of native and international varieties. Spanish wines represent some of the best value for money on UK wine shelves. Although many consider Spain a hot country, one of sand, sea and siestas, it is in fact one of the most mountainous countries in Europe. The cool nights at altitude and fresh ocean breezes moderate the summer heat, allowing quality wines to be produced. To better understand Spain’s 69 designated wine regions, it is helpful to consider the influence of its diverse climate on wine styles.

Beginning in Galicia in north-west Spain, cool rain-laden Atlantic winds result in delicate crisp aromatic wines, with citrus and stone fruit flavours from the Albarino and Godello grapes. In north-central Spain, the Duero and Ebro river valleys are sheltered by high mountain ranges and experience warmer conditions, ripening grapes such as

Tempranillo. As Spain’s principal native red variety, it is responsible for both elegant traditional oak-aged wines in Rioja and powerful reds in fashionable Ribera del Duero. Navarra meanwhile, is home to refreshing, inexpensive, dry, fruity roses from the Garnacha grape.

The Mediterranean coast is well-known to all holiday makers, with Penedes near Barcelona in Catalonia famous for the Spanish sparkling wine Cava, made by the same traditional method as Champagne.

In the mountainous and remote region of Priorat, the Garnacha produces super concentrated expensive reds from vines over 100 years old. Further south in the Levante, inland from Spain’s popular coastal resorts, vineyards experience sea breezes and milder conditions with smooth juicy reds produced from a blend of native and international grapes.

Central Spain is covered by the Meseta, an elevated, arid plain surrounded by mountain ranges, with blazing hot summers and freezing cold winters. At its centre, south of Madrid is the extensive La Mancha region providing large volumes of ripe, easy drinking, modern wines familiar to UK wine consumers. In the far south, in hot Andalucía, the nutty fortified wine Sherry from Jerez adds to the already wide range of diverse

A riverside ramble along the new Isbourne Way

A scenic new walk taking in the entire length of Winchcombe’s River Isbourne has just been launched.

The Isbourne Way follows the 14 mile course of the north-flowing Isbourne from its source near the Washpool on Cleeve Common to the confluence with the River Avon at Evesham.

Devised by Winchcombe resident and walker Peter Teague, pictured, below, on behalf of Winchcombe Walkers are Welcome, it was launched at this year’s Walking Festival.

Peter said: “I actually dreamt up the idea four years ago but was busy with other projects. I had to wait until last year to develop it which I did in time for the walking festival.”

Peter describes the Isbourne as a river of contrasts. “Nowadays it is very peaceful with open views, a home to birds and flowers. But it was a significant source of industrial power, supporting many mills. The churches and other buildings in the villages and towns on the route provide evidence of that past.”

The Isbourne Way has now been officially signposted and Peter has produced a booklet in support of the walk.The booklet details the route and also splits the Way into five circular walks so each section can be enjoyed separately with a ‘return’ route. Sites of interest are also highlighted.

The Prologue sets out a route to the Washpool and an Epilogue suggests how to get back to Winchcombe once you’ve reached the end of the Way at Evesham.

When you move into a new home you don’t normally expect love, laughter, fun and friendship to be part of the package.

She met John, 84, just a few days after moving in and after a three-year ‘Blenheim Courtship’ the couple were married and held their reception in the owners’ lounge.

Most are ‘overwhelmed’ by the camaraderie among residents – not to mention the general friendliness of Winchcombe itself.

Former Cheltenham resident Pat Fishlock, 72, received a very warm welcome from her new neighbours – including one fellow home -owner in particular.

Scheme Manager Liz Winch, said: “There’s a perception that Blenheim Court is where old people sit with blankets over their knees.

That couldn’t be further from the truth. Our owners are very much their own people.

They’re independent, outgoing, involved with Winchcombe activities and make the most of the freedom offered by this lifestyle.”

With all the gardening, window cleaning, building maintenance and contractor issues taken care of by Liz and the Managing Agents, Cotswold Property Management Services Ltd, on behalf of the management company, it leaves the residents free to live their often very active and busy lives.

Mary Brettell, who moved in nearly eight years ago said: “It’s an absolutely brilliant combination of security, independence and if you choose to, socialising. If the weather’s nice we might have a barbecue or an impromptu afternoon tea. It’s a little community here in its own right and it’s a lovely atmosphere.”

Newest resident Stan Bennett, 88, moved from Buckinghamshire to be near his family.

He said: “It’s just like village life and I love it. I like being close to the town centre and will often pop down to The Lion for a pint and a lunch with the ladies! Blenheim Court is named after the old apple orchard and like those apples we ripen as we get older!”

There are more than 40 properties at Blenheim Court, a mix of one and two bedroom apartments and two bungalows.To live there, you must be over 55 and able to lead an independent life.

Liz said: “We’re not a residential care home or a retirement home. Some of our residents are in full time work others are very involved with local clubs such as the WI, Probus, Community Choir, charities and the Art Club.”

Like Winchcombe, Blenheim Court is also a hive of activity with curry nights, barbecues, crib challenges, coffee mornings and scrabble contests.

There are also birthday parties, private functions, a guest suite and very pretty, well maintained gardens.

Resident Jean Boulton said: “Blenheim Court is a ‘thinking person’s place. it’s more like a friendly cul-de-sac where you can choose to socialise if you wish.

It’s perfect.”

Maggie Pointer who lives with her artist husband Jack, added: “We both love it here because of the lifestyle. It’s small and personal and we know a lot of very interesting people. It’s a friendly neighbourhood in its own right.”

Local News Meet an old club working on a new image Once only the domain of ‘working men’ this recently refurbished Winchcombe club is now making quite a name for itself.... with Prime Minister David Cameron even among its latest supporters!

It may be nearly 100 years old, but Winchcombe Working Men’s Club on Abbey Terrace, is going from strength to strength with a recent revival largely down to a major refurbishment and upgrade of facilities.

It has recently been named 2014 Club of the Year at the AGM of The Association of Conservative Clubs. Club Chairman John Murphy received a cheque for £250 for club funds and a gleaming plaque to mark the achievement by the Prime Minister himself, at a plush presentation ceremony in London.

Since the club improvements membership has nearly doubled to nearly 700 members – including women - and its turnover has increased by 27 per cent.

Chairman John Murphy said: “Our facilities were a little tired to say the least and membership was on the decline. The club needed a serious overhaul and following much planning and design we refurbished our two main bars, function rooms, toilets,

corridors and halls over a two year period.

We also installed Broadband to provide free Wi-Fi and CCTV for club safety.”

The main bar has been transformed and now sports trendy blue-grey painted boarding, oak bars and red and cream tub sofas and chairs. New screens offer Sky and BT Sport in each bar with Racing UK available upstairs. The club believes it’s the only bar in Winchcombe to boast a Jukebox and the impressive downstairs

games room is graced by two plush, full-sized snooker tables that are lovingly maintained and carefully protected. There’s also a skittle alley – next on the refurb list – and club teams who compete in local darts, crib and skittles leagues.

John said: “The aim of the upgrade, and the reason we won the award, was to attract new members and encourage existing ones to visit us more regularly. We want to act as a social hub for the community, for men, women and families and dispel the ‘working men only’ image.”

In its drive to be a more ‘social hub’ the club now has live entertainment almost weekly and communicates regularly with members via email, text and on the website. Membership is just £10 per year and just £5 for pensioners. Current members range from between 18 to 80-years-old, proof that it’s a club that appeals to all ages.

John said: “As well as the new facilities our bars also act as function rooms for up to

100 people that members can hire. We also have the least expensive bar prices in Winchcombe – so that’s another bonus!”

The club is open Monday to Friday 5 pm – 11 pm* Saturday 12.30 pm – 11 pm* and Sundays 12 noon - 11 pm* *(Club licensing hours are longer).

L o oki n g b ac k TOWN’S FIRST MOTOR BUS GETS READY TO ROLL This impressive Motor Bus was Winchcombe’s first bus service and is pictured with driver ready for its maiden trip to Cheltenham back in 1905.

The Motor Bus was operated by the Great Western Railway road motor services and was one of a network set up across the country to support its train services and as a cheaper alternative to building new railways in rural areas. The Motor Bus was launched at the same time that the Railway Station opened in 1905. Its purpose was to carry rail passengers arriving at Winchcombe Station from Honeybourne into Cheltenham as at that time the line stopped in Winchcombe.

Greet tunnel was not completed until early 1906, the section from Winchcombe to Bishops Cleeve opened in June and the line from Bishops Cleeve to Cheltenham (Malvern Road), in August 1906, but Cheltenham station itself wasn’t finished until 1908. The photograph was taken at Winchcombe Railway Station by the local chemist J.P. Hawley.
