It’s nearly Spring again - and a year since we started Winchcombe Life! In this 32-page anniversary issue, we’ve included more pages of local news and have details on the town’s three summer Festivals: Walking; Music and Arts and Fizz! The newest, the Festival of Fizz, is in July and you’ll find initial details on page 19.

There’s also another Wool Weekend, a fundraising summer ball and several new initiatives in which local people are doing wonderful work for the community.

It’s great that several new businesses have opened their doors and I’d like to congratulate the team at Rapport interiors on their 30 years in business. We’ve a special four page feature to celebrate!

There’s much good work taking place in the town, but there are two causes worthy of a special mention. The Summer Ball, whose proceeds this are year going to CLIC Sargent, a charity helping six-year-old Jasmine Charles, a little Winchcombe girl currently undergoing chemotherapy after surgery for cancer last year.

Secondly, is the fundraising appeal for a town defibrillator, (see page 19). For much of the time this impressive machine may hang untouched on a wall near the High Street. But one day – any day - this instantly available, hi-tech device, could prove the timely help that saves the life of any one of us.

LOCAL NEWS WALK-FEST Hundreds of hikers will be lacing up their boots for this year’s fourth Winchcombe Walking Festival – that promises to be a bumper year.

With many new walks and events planned, organisers are expecting nearly 400 walkers to converge on the town that’s promoted as ‘the walking capital of the Cotswolds.’

The three-day event strides into action on Friday 16th May and the weekend offers a packed programme of walks and events to suit those of all abilities, from a leisurely 1.5 mile stroll, to a strenuous 14 mile, day-long hike. Many walks take in important local landmarks, or historic sites, with visits to Cotswold attractions included on some routes. Popular evening gatherings give fellow walkers a further chance to meet and socialise.

Robert Talbot, of WWaW, said: “Bookings have grown from 240 when we began in 2010, to nearly 400. The three-day format is very popular and attracts people from all over the UK. This year, we are also expecting visitors from the USA and Japan.

Festival bookings get earlier each year and it is not unusual for us to duplicate some walks that are sold out months in advance.

GET THE BALL ROLLING FOR LITTLE JASMINE Townspeople are being urged to support this year’s Winchcombe Mid-Summer Ball - in support of six-year-old Jasmine Charles, who is fighting cancer.

All proceeds from the ball this year, are going to children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent, which has been supporting Jasmine’s family - Dad Spike, mum Ev and big sister Lily – since Jasmine was diagnosed with kidney and lung cancer in April last year.

The brave youngster, a pupil at the town’s Abbey Primary School, is undergoing 12 sessions of chemotherapy treatment, following her surgery in September.

The Summer Ball on Saturday 21st June, is the latest in a series of fundraising events being held locally in support of CLIC. Painter and decorator Spike, also a retained fire fighter at Winchcombe and wife Ev, of Barnmeadow Road, say they are overwhelmed by the community’s support.

Spike said: “Jasmine is doing ok at the moment and should finish the chemo at the end of May. We’ve learnt that things can change in a very short space of time, so we just live from day to day and tend not to plan anything. It certainly helps having such wonderful support from family, friends and local people. It keeps us going through the difficult days and we’d like to thank everyone who is being so kind and supportive.”

Tickets for the ball are on sale now from The Coventry at £50 per head which includes a glass of something sparkly on arrival; a four-course meal served at your table, a live band and disco. The marquee venue in the grounds of Winchcombe School, will be specially decked out for the night. A staged payment scheme is being run so if they wish, ticket-buyers can spread their payments.

YOUTH MENTORS WANTED A new charity, launched to help young people in Winchcombe achieve their full potential, is appealing for people willing to act as mentors.

WAM Youth – We All Matter – is the brainchild of Co-founder and Director Kerry Coombs, a life-coach and former management trainer and Gemma Madle, a professional youth worker.

The charity aims to see young people flourish and help them develop their confidence, talents and general well-being, regardless of their faith. The women already run several youth activities and sessions at Encounter Church in Gretton Road, for 11 to 16-year-olds, but felt there was a need for more intensive, one-to-one work with some young people outside a church setting.

Kerry said: “We believe we all have a responsibility to nurture and support the next generation and we see this as a community-wide project. We are working closely with Winchcombe School to provide mentoring for some pupils, but are now seeking mentors from the town to develop this project, especially males.”

A mentor’s role includes meeting their young person for at least one hour per week, for a minimum of 12 months, as well as taking part in two activity days and a residential trip. All potential mentors are subject to a strict recruitment process that adheres to current safeguarding guidance and will undergo in-house training.

WAM is also seeking sponsors for the

£22-a-week cost of each student’s mentoring programme. Other initiatives being offered by Trustees include workplace training and an elite cycling team.

Magnificent mix OF EVENTS AT TOWN’S FOURTH FESTIVAL A packed programme of great music, arts and crafts is being planned for this year’s fourth Winchcombe Festival of Music and Arts.

T

he 2014 Festival line-up will feature everything from jazz, folk and swing music, to talks on art and history, workshops in painting and playwriting, plus concerts and recitals by talented musicians, singers and performers.

Many new events will be taking place during the eight-day extravaganza which kicks off on Monday 19th May and runs through until Monday 26th May, with a finale of the popular Bank Holiday Monday Street Fair with live entertainment.

In a joint initiative with Giffords Circus – who open their touring season at Sudeley Castle during Festival week – several exciting circus-related activities are being finalised, including a talk by circus owner Nell Gifford in the big top. Other new events include a chalk painting workshop, silversmith and craft sessions, song writing

and playwriting, plus craft and cake-making for children. For music-lovers, there will be several recitals including a 1950s-inspired Cello and Piano recital, a concert by Michael Bochmann and Friends and Susy Firth, pictured below, will perform Women & Song.

Also taking place this year is a music and arts quiz night and, marking the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War One, is a reading of the poignant Harvey’s War Letters’ by Greet poet, Helena Cavan.

Popular band Swing from Paris and the Askew Sisters, Emily and Hazel are both returning to the Festival and there’s a Dixie Band Jazz barbecue and a Jazz in the Garden picnic. Blue Grass and folk musicians will also play live in local pubs.

The Art Trail and Art Club exhibition, both Festival favourites are also taking place, as is a photographic exhibition focusing on World War One by the town’s Historic Society.

Appearing for the first time this year, will be internationally-renowned Cheltenham artist PJ Crook, pictured below, who will be giving a talk and putting some of her work on show in the town.

Festival Chairman Roger Paine, said: “Once again we’re offering a magnificent mix of music and arts events. It’s a really diverse programme, culminating with a new Festival Party Night and the exciting Bank Holiday Street Fair.”

Proceeds from each Friday go directly to the organising charity.

If you like to grow your own, but just hate digging, this special free session on Permaculture No-Dig Veg Growing in Winchcombe could be for you.

WEEK TIME FOR STEPS WOOL The annual Winchcombe Wool Festival The history of Winchcombe is being brought vividly to life this weekend in a twohour production entitled Steps Through Time, being held in St Peter’s Church.

Moving from pre-Roman times to the Second World War, the event involves dozens of local people who will perform the history of the town supported by music and lights. It starts on Friday 7th March and runs until Sunday 9th March, starting at 7.30pm, each evening. HEARTY HELP Sponsored cyclists from all over Gloucestershire will be pedalling through Winchcombe in May on the last leg of the annual Cotswolds Bike Ride in support of the British Heart Foundation.

The circular, 40-mile route starts at Cheltenham racecourse and goes across the Cotswolds taking in Brockhampton, Guiting Power, Stanway and Toddington with a lunch stop at Winchcombe School.

TO TICKLE THE TASTE BUDS Hungr y customer s are being bowled over by the latest tasty offering from Dumbleton cricketer-come-cook Richard Simpson

I

n a an ‘unplanned but exciting’ move, Richard has expanded his Cotswold Bites business to open a new coffee shop and village store in Dumbleton and it’s already proving a huge hit with locals.

His freshly-made sandwiches, home-made soups, hot meals and tasty bites, have villagers regularly queuing for his cooking and he’s even had delighted customers ring him up to say his sandwiches bought from Toddington’s Spar shop, are the best they’ve ever tasted!

He said: “It was all a bit unexpected, but I had the chance to take over Dumbleton stores and I’m now running my catering business from here. It’s a bit like opening up my larder to the public and it seems to be going down very well. Customers never know what I will be making, but more often than not, it smells nice so they buy some for themselves, it’s a win-win situation!”

The culinary skills of the self-taught cook, who turned his lifelong passion into a full-time business less than two years ago, are now in demand across the region and Richard has bookings from as fa ras Bristol up to Birmingham for his outside catering services.

Cotswold Bites also provides a daily sandwich service to local shops and companies and provides catering for family parties, events and barbecues at the picturesque, purpose-built, Dumbleton Cricket Pavilion.

A keen cricketer originally from Hook Norton, Richard moved to Dumbleton 20 years ago where he joined the village team and is currently fixtures secretary.

After working in the publishing industry and cooking only ‘to help people out,he hit on the idea of combining his two hobbies –

cooking and cricket.

“I’ve always loved cooking and was regularly asked by friends and family to cater for parties and functions, so it set me thinking. I realised there was a kitchen at the pavilion that was used for only half of the year and it’s a lovely setting for events. The committee agreed I could use it and Cotswold Bites was born.”

With Richard always either cooking, or preparing sandwiches, it was easy to extend Cotswold Bites into a coffee shop business.

The provisions he has delivered for his own use, he now shares with store customers and also stocks a few household essentials too.

Cotswold Bites uses other local firms for its supplies, with bread, pastries and pasties coming from North’s Bakery in Winchcombe, meat from Collins of Broadway and fruit and vegetables from Chipping Campden and Pershore.

And with the Winchcombe Way crossing right outside the store, Richard is planning to have alfresco seating and covers for up to 20 diners as the summer approaches.

“I’m using local suppliers, cooking for local people and companies and now have three part-time staff who help me. It couldn’t be going better and I’m doing what I love best – cooking!

COTSWOLD BITES’ OWN TALEGGIO CHICKEN DISH Serves 6 • 6 Skinless boneless chicken fillets • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 175g (6oz) Taleggio Cheese (straight from the fridge) cut into small cubes • 3 tbsp Pesto • 2 tbsp Chopped basil • 3 tbsp Full fat cream cheese • 50g Fresh breadcrumbs • Pinch of paprika • 400g Cherry Tomatoes on the Vine • 2 tbsp Olive Oil • 1 tbsp Balsamic vinegar TO MAKE

1. Preheat Oven to 220°C (200°C fan/425°F/Gas 7). Arrange the chicken breasts in a single layer in an ovenproof dish or roasting tin and season with salt and pepper.

2. Mix the Taleggio, pesto, basil and cream cheese in a bowl and season.

Spoon on to the chicken breasts, spreading the mixture out to cover them completely. Sprinkle with the breadcrumbs and then the paprika.

3. Bake for 20 minutes then arrange the tomatoes around the chicken, pour the oil and vinegar over them, and return to the oven for a further 10 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through, being careful not to overcook.

4. To serve, arrange chicken breast on each plate with a few tomatoes and spoon over some of the juices from the dish. Great served with new potatoes and purple sprouting or broccoli.

Be dramatic - but keep it simple This year’s design trends are all about creating dramatic impact from simplicity Here, Rapport Director Steve Meredith, talks about the latest colours and trends coming through from leading UK designers and suppliers.

“Recent years have seen an abundance of grey, beige and ‘greige’ a cross between the two. These colours will remain in vogue, but there are now moves towards hues of blue, blue/green, or plum. These soft

palettes are the new neutral with an ability to blend with many other colours.

“Using these lighter hues as a base, you can bring in deep tones of the stronger colours, either on feature walls or recesses.

A strong navy blue, or plum on a sofa or chair, looks stunning against a much lighter, co-ordinating tone background.”

“Roman blinds offer a smart and practical approach. As they take a relatively small amount of material you may be tempted to splash out on a more expensive fabric, something special you’ve had your eye on! Alternatively, you could choose an eye-catching decorative trim to set it off.

“If you want to create a lovely, sumptous appearance to your curtains and blinds, you can add interlining, which gives extra fullness and depth to the window. This is something many people would not even consider, but it can make a huge difference to the finished look of your window and in turn, the whole room.

“Increasingly popular for newer, or more contemporary homes, are smart, plantation shutters, which give a clean, minimal look. These are available either in stained wood, or painted finishes to co-ordinate with your chosen colour scheme.”

• Choose light wall colours, particularly in small properties and character cottages that often have low ceilings and small windows • Keep wall colours similar to give ‘good colour flow’ throughout the house, this helps maximise the feeling of space and subtly ties in one room with another • Use feature wall-coverings, bold or colourful, to add your own stamp and character to rooms • Build schemes around your chosen window fabric, pulling on the elements of the design and colours to repeat on upholstered furniture such as chairs, footstools, headboards, cushions and accessories • Consider all elements of your decor at once. This can take time, but it’s worth the effort. Time spent planning will ensure all your room elements work together. Do this before committing

to a purchase. It will avoid you making potentially expensive mistakes.

• Whenever possible, choose the same colour and quality of carpet to go throughout your home. This will normally be less wasteful and you may benefit from a price discount on a higher quantity.

• When choosing a carpet don’t skimp on the underlay. Always use a good combination felt, for improved wear and to give extra luxury underfoot. Many people make the mistake of choosing cheap underlay, but it’s as important as the carpet on top.

• Do some research. There are plenty of interiors magazines, internet blogs and sites giving great ideas and showing how schemes work in practice.

• Create your own mood board. If you’ve seen, or already have, particular colours, fabrics, wall coverings, or designs that

• The internet is a great tool for research and inspiration, but you cannot truly replicate colour and texture through a screen. Always visit a showroom to see and touch your preferred fabrics, carpets and coverings.

LOCAL NEWS NEW CLASSROOM TRIBUTE A new classroom for budding potters has been opened at Winchcombe Pottery – dedicated to the late Ray Finch.

The classroom has been created on the site of Ray’s former studio, from where he produced thousands of pots during his 76-year career there.

Ray’s former studio has been transformed into a fullyequipped workshop catering Potter Matt Grimmitt in the new classroom for up to six students. The classroom has six potters’ wheels, electric kilns, storage and preparation areas and a pot decoration and finishing section.

Ray’s son Mike, who runs the pottery in Becketts Lane, decided to convert his late father’s studio as a lasting and ongoing tribute to both his father and his late mother Muriel, a former teacher.

Potter Matt Grimmitt, said: “I think the new classroom is a very fitting tribute to Ray, who was a lovely man, a potter of international acclaim and who had patience and time for everyone. As well as running classes, students can hire the studio to practice what they are learning and make their own pots. It’s open the same hours as the pottery, so is very accessible. It’s a great facility for students of all ages and the main aim is for people to learn pottery and above all, enjoy it.

Saturday classes run from 11am to 1pm and cost £20 per person. Evening and Sunday courses are also planned. Contact the pottery for details on 01242 602462.

WI HELPS KATE’S HOME NURSING Hardworking fundraisers from Winchcombe WI have raised more than £1,000 to help provide free home nursing care for patients in the last stages of illness.

The town WI nominated Kate’s Home Nursing as their charity for 2013 and during the year raised a hefty £1250 for it. The cheque was presented to Nick Puffett, one of the charity’s experienced Registered Nurses, who is also Nurse Practitioner at Winchcombe Medical Centre. He said: “We’re very grateful to the WI for this fantastic donation. The charity relies entirely on contributions to meet its annual running costs so all support is much appreciated.”

GREAT WEEKEND OF FIZZY FAMILY FUN Sparkling plans are well under way for an exciting new, two-day Festival of Fizz in Winchcombe this summer.

The weekend Festival on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th July, marks the 400th anniversary of the birth of Dr Christopher Merrett in 1614, the Winchcombe-born scholar credited with discovering sparkling wine – 20 years before Dom Perignon.

A Festival of Fizz committee was formed last year and is spearheading plans for the event which are set to include food and drink tasters and demonstrations; fizzthemed events at local shops and pubs; family–oriented activities; historical talks on Dr Merrett’s life and works and a live tribute band with a ‘pop’ theme. A HEART-FELT TOWN APPEAL An appeal has been launched to raise at least £2,000 to buy a life-saving defibrillator for Winchcombe town centre.

The campaign is being spearheaded

by Mrs Rosemary Hancock, of The George, who with the help of volunteers has already issued dozens of letters asking for support.

Rosemary decided to run the appeal after a friend died suddenly of a heart attack in the town centre last year. She said: “It was very tragic and just made me think. A heart attack can strike anyone, of any age, at any time and as a community, we could potentially help save someone’s life if we had this equipment available for anyone to use.

“The first four minutes after a heart attack is the crucial time to take action, so having a defibrillator on hand could literally be the difference between life and death.”

Rosemary is working with national charity, The Community Heartbeat Trust, which with UK ambulance services, promotes and increases Community Public Access Defibrillation, (cPAD), in rural communities.

It’s only in the last two years that technology and health guidelines have meant specially-devised equipment is now available that can be used with little, or no, training. The Trust says the life expectancy of a patient suffering a Sudden Cardiac Arrest decreases by up to 23% per minute from the event, so time is critical.

Rosemary is being supported by Liz Stranks of The Coventry, where an account has been opened for the cPAD appeal and donations are already coming in. Rosemary added: “The people of Winchcombe are very caring and are always very generous with causes close to home. Whether you can give just a £1 or £100, it all helps and literally could end up saving a life.”

LOCAL NEWS CHARITY EATS Six charities will benefit from a series of Lent Lunches taking place in Winchcombe this Spring.

The lunches take place every Friday, between 12 noon and 1.30pm at the Guide Hall in the High Street, and for just £5 the public can tuck into a bowl of soup, bread and cheese, a tasty pudding and a cup of tea, or coffee, to raise money for a different charity or group each week. Friday 7th March, is the town’s Sue Ryder shop; Friday 14th Christian Aid; Friday 21st The Royal British Legion; Friday 28th The Children’s Society; Friday 4th April Winchcombe Abbey Primary School and lastly, on April 11th the Winchcombe Day Care Centre.

YOUTH HUB IS THE NEW CENTRE OF ATTENTION It’s all systems go at the re-launched Winchcombe Youth Hub as recentlyappointed Trustees prepare to open the doors on a range of exciting new services and activities for young people.

On Saturday 15th March, an open morning is being held at the Youth Hub from 10am to 12 noon, where there will be a chance to meet the team of trustees, youth workers and volunteers who will show off its refurbishment and promote its new plans and activities to young people and their parents.

A group of 12 creative students from Winchcombe School’s Arts Committee recently spent a colourful weekend painting new designs, murals and ceilings in the two rooms that make up the Youth Hub as part of the refurbishment project.

The Hub now boasts new carpets and flooring, new lighting, furniture and carpentry improvements have been carried out, giving the ‘very tired’ facilities a whole new lease of life. Wi-fi is being provided, along with pool and snooker tables, table tennis and other leisure equipment.

There’s a social room and a quiet room for homework in the afternoons where laptops will be available and access to the Sports Hall next door in the evenings.

ASDAN short courses are being laid on, along with discussion groups and talks.

Catering for 11 to 16-year-olds, the Hub is open on a Monday from 7pm to 9.30pm for 11s to 13s, and on a Thursday from 7pm to 9.30pm for 14s to 16s. After school, ‘drop in’ cafe sessions run on a Monday and Tuesday from 3.30pm to 5pm for all ages.

David Thomas, a retired management consultant, is chairman of the Winchcombe Youth Partnership, a body he’s registered as a charitable organisation. WYP manages and leases the Old Boys’ Grammar School building in Gretton Road – home to the Youth Hub and partly sub-let to neighbours Radio Winchcombe and British Bespoke Auctions.

David said: “The future of the Youth Hub is looking very bright. The new facilities have been provided as a direct result of a school survey that established exactly what young people needed and wanted. Their priority was having somewhere safe to meet and socialise after school and a place with ‘things to do’ in the evenings – and that’s what we’re offering. We’ve re-established a good relationship with Winchcombe School and have lots more plans and local organisations we would like to work with at the Hub.”

To attend the evening sessions, young people must be members of the Youth Hub, for which parental consent is needed.

Fees are then just £1 per evening, while afternoon sessions are free and open to members and non-members.

David said: “I hope many of Winchcombe’s 11-to-16 year-olds – and their parents – will come along to our open morning and find out for themselves what their new-look Youth Hub is offering. The whole structure of the WYP and direction of the Hub itself has moved on and we’re really hoping the town’s younger generation will continue taking it forward with us.”

Town guides will be leading morning and afternoon tours around some of Winchcombe’s most historic sites, detailing its history from ancient Saxon times through to World War 2 and beyond.

The walks take place every Sunday, are less than one mile and last just over an hour.

They are designed to be accessible for all so are pavement-based. The guides are all, local people with a passion for their town and are keen to share its fascinating

history with visitors, holiday-makers and local people.

Sue Smith, Co-ordinator of the Guided Town Walks, said: “Our guides so enjoyed the experience last year they have returned to do it again this season. We met some interesting people from all over the world and it was just as interesting for us to find out about them and their reasons for coming to Winchcombe, as it was for them to hear about its history. Every group was different and the feedback we had from visitors was all good.”

This year, the Guided Walks have received

funding from Winchcombe Business Forum to help with publicity and marketing. The tours are limited to 12 people, but larger parties can be catered for by appointment.

Sue said: “We’re hoping to build on our successful first year and would like more volunteers to join us. No experience is necessary to be a guide, just an interest in history, a love of the town and a willingness to meet people and share this.”

L O O K IN G B AC K MEET LES BUTLER MASTER BAKER This lovely photo from the 1960s shows Winchcombe’s Master Baker Les Butler, pictured right, loading loaves into his purpose-built oven at his bakery in Mill Lane. Mr Joe Workman, on the left, joined Les after running his own business at The Old Bakehouse in Castle Street.

Les was one of three independent bakers in the town and helped keep townspeople fed during the Second World War, cooking 2lb and 4lb loaves in his coke-fired oven. He won awards for his brown bread and on Christmas Eve would use his ovens to cook turkeys for local people.

At Easter, he would bake 120 dozen hot cross buns for townspeople as well as villagers in Didbrook and Stanway, making deliveries in his Morris 1000 van. Born in 1907, he was also a Special Constable in the town and started work as a grocer. He retired in the late 1960s and died in 1981, aged 73. He is survived by his three sons Rex, Roy and Max.
