Wilson College Launches New Logo And Slogan “With Confidence” by Xiaomeng Li Wilson recently released its brand-new logo and tagline. Most students saw them on the Wilson website after they came back from Thanksgiving break. The new logo consists of the abbreviation “WC” -- Wilson College -- and the founding year 1869, which is at the lower left corner. Along with the logo is the new tagline that reads, “Wilson College, With Confidence.” During the public announcement on Nov. 24 in the Harry R. Brooks Science Center auditorium, President Lorna Edmundson explained that the new logo and tagline of Wilson is part of the ongoing Branding Wilson campaign. According to Edmundson, Wilson based its campagin on the spirit of the Wilson Honor Principle and Mission Statement. Wilson started the branding project in the fall of 2008. The Communication Department hired Carnegie Communications to help research and design the campaign. Carnegie Communications did their research based on the Wilson Honor Principle and Mission Statement, as well as the opinions of 10 different focus groups which included current students, faculty, staff, alumnae, board members, etc. After collecting the focus group's understandings and expectations of Wilson, Carnegie Communications decided on common values and traits that would make Wilson distinctive. Carnegie Communications and Wilson Communications Department then developed an “internal positioning statement” which says, “Wilson College is a premier, forward-thinking institution for preparing passionate advocates to lead change to ward a better and more equitable global society.” Debra Collins, Director of Communications, explains that this internal positioning statement is not a new mission statement. Instead, it is a general guide that Wilson needs to keep in mind and reflect in public campaigns and presentations in the future. Last spring, Wilson faculty and staff voted on three taglines. Finally, “Wilson College, With Confidence” was chosen by a 2/3 vote. Collins believes that this tagline reflects an attribute of Wilson, “Some students may be unsure about who they are. And with the education offered by Wilson, they will leave here with confidence.” Besides, the resonance of the tagline could also make people remember Wilson, according President Edmundson in the public announcement. Early in the summer of 2009,

Carnegie Communications offered three logos in an online survey to the Wilson community. Although there was a close vote between two logos, the winning logo was finally chosen because current students and alumnae preferred it. The Communications Department believed these two groups’ opinion was more important in terms of building Wilson’s new image. Collins says that the new logo represents Wilson’s value of tradition as well as innovation. The founding year of Wilson, displayed on the logo, reflects the importance of Wilson’s history. The colors of the logo still remain blue and silver, which are the conventional colors of Wilson. The font of the logo is Garamond FB Display, modernized by the designer, which symbolizes the convergence between tradition and innovation. “Wilson is always on the head of the curve,” says Collins, “the adult degree program, women with children program, sustainable farming and CSA are all very innovative in this area.” Some students give their thoughts on the new logo and tagline. Alexandra H. ’13 says the new logo is “strong in its simplicity” as she explains that “it has the date of beginning, something that has instilled education, honor, and confidence in lives ever since.” Janessa Demeule ’11 feels the message is clearly conveyed by the tagline, but “it kind of falls short. I feel like it is more a slogan for an old fashioned woman’s prep school than a college.” The purpose of this branding project is to make Wilson stand out in the education market and attract more potential students. For now, the Communications Department is preparing a manual about the new logo and tagline. In the near future, the department will also modify the Wilson website in order to make it more distinctive and better reflect Wilson’s new brand.

Appenzellar Family’s Final Gift Equals $8.6 Mil for Science Center by Kayla Chagnon On Thurs, Nov. 9, Wilson announced that the college recently received a $4.3 million gift from the Appenzellar-Buchanan family. The name might seem familiar on campus; the dance studio in Davidson Hall, the Appenzellar-Buchanan Dance Studio, received its name from a gift from the same family. This large gift culminated years of giving from the family. Margaret C. “Maggie” Appenzellar ‘54 left most of her family’s estate to Wilson making the college the “primary beneficiary” according to the College’s press release. Maggie Appenzellar was one of twelve women in the Appenzellar-Buchanan family to attend Wilson. Her mother, both of her grandmothers and her two sisters attended Wilson. This was a cumulative gift from all the sisters, Maggie Appenzellar, Anne Appenzellar ‘45 and Jean Appenzellar ’47. Previously, the family gave the college both large and small gifts and Jean Appenzellar left Wilson $1.5 million in a trust that Wilson collects interest on each year according to Jeff Zufelt, Vice

President of College Advancement. Zufelt said that Maggie Appenzellar recently moved back to Chambersburg about a year ago and was living in Penn Hall next to campus. He said that, “she enjoyed herself here; she reconnected with college friends and made new friends with Wilson Alumnae that live at Penn Hall.” Last year she celebrated her 55 reunion and stayed the weekend in Wilson’s dormitories. Zufelt also said that the college “had been having conversations with Maggie about making a gift while she was still alive so she could see first hand” the benefit her gift had on Wilson. He said that the whole college was saddened when she past away without seeing the benefit that her gift could have had on the campus. Zufelt said that it is amazing to see the “impact women have when they work together” like the Appenzellar sisters. The gift will support the new Brooks Complex for Science, Mathematics and Technology. “The latest Appenzellar gift will actually realize a total of Continued on Page 2
