Year 4

Our main learning this half term will be focusing on our local history, with a specific focus around the village of Eyam. We will also be studying other regions around the United Kingdom, particularly those regions that were affected by the plague.

Summer Term Plan

History

Mission Statement Herringthorpe Junior School ‘Working in partnership to engage hearts and minds in the joy of learning.’

This term, our topic is History based. We will be learning all about the plague and the impact that it had during the years of 1665-1666.

Physical Education This term, the children will participate in rounders and orienteering. Children will also continue to access swimming lessons on a Thursday.

Dear Parents/ Carers,

The Summer term in Y4 will be full of exciting opportunities. As well as introducing our new topic: The Black Death, we have an exciting visit booked to Eyam, the plague village where the plague infected many of its residents. We will focus on our new class text, ‘The Children of Winter’. Towards the end of this term, you will receive a report which will provide details of your child’s current assessment levels, their progress over the year and their targets for moving into Year 5.

We are really looking forward to the Summer Term!

PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) Children will be looking at how to keep themselves safe online.

Literacy Lots of our writing will be based on our class text, The Children of Winter. We will be developing our skills in researching and organising information to create a newspaper report and diary entries from different characters perspectives. We will be participating in lots of drama activities to complete these pieces of writing.

Numeracy This term, we will be refocusing on data handling, measurement with a particular focus on area and perimeter.

We will also be preparing ourselves for our Times Table test before the end of the academic year.

Science Our science topic will be focused on sound and materials and their properties. Using investigations and hands on activities, we want to find out and investigate all about the different materials that exist.

Real Project This term the Y4’s will be designing and making items of clothing used to protect people from catching the plague.

ICT/ Computing In ICT, we will be further developing our skills in computing using programmes such as ‘Book Creator’ and ‘Purple Mash’.

We will also be using the internet safely for lots of our historical research linked to our plague topic.

Design Technology/ Art In art, we will be continuing to develop our artistic skills. We will be using pen and ink, pencils, pastels and charcoal to create a range of images. Our Picture This artwork linked to Monet will be displayed in Magna at the end of June.

Music During the Summer Term, we are looking forward to developing our skills in playing a new instrument. We will be participating in the Big String/ Big Bash..

RE Our studies in Religious Education will be based around the Islamic faith this term.
