Redneck Rodeo aims for funny and fun JENNIFER BLUE jennifer@colusacountynews.net

s summer approaches, the nights get warmer. People can really let down their hair (and mullets) at the Redneck Rodeo on June 5. All are welcomed to attend. The lighthearted event is designed to bring good times and revenue to maintain the fairgrounds, but is not to be confused with the fair. Every year, the Wednesday prior to the fair’s opening night, the Colusa County Fair Foundation hosts an event with a humerous intent. Secretary for the Colusa County Fair Foundation Shiela Etchepare points out, “(CCFF) has nothing to do with the operation of the fairgrounds. Ours is about preserving the integrity of the infrastructure and those 55 acres.” This is the third year that CCFF has raised funds with a total gross of $869,025. Arriving early at 5:30 PM will be the Redneck Rodeo contestants, but the Rodeo officially starts at 6 PM. Don’t let the theme fool you; the event will be in good taste thanks to the

to take dedication requests for a donation. Grab your best dancing boots and twirl a girl around to your favorite tune. Teams will compete in a goat milking contest with a twist: Instead of a milking stool, participants will park their keesters on cozy tractor chairs. Each seat will be auctioned off and worth the purchase as they were designed by the folks at Emerald Farms and provided by Terry Bressler. Teams are Colusa-Glen Farm Credit Loco Loanerz, Colusa County Firefighters Dry Hose

Fire Brigade, Colusa County Farm Supply Pest Pounders and Grow West Dirt Doctors. Tickets for the teams will be given to any size donation. Tickets can be obtained from the team members or any of the CCFF directors, or purchased at the Colusa County Fairgrounds. The event will be held in the TK Marshall Pavilion of the Colusa County Fairgrounds at 6 PM on June 5, so there’s still time to donate to your favorite team.■

Traynham, the daughter of Jennifer and Don Traynham, of Colusa, has fulfilled her duties at numerous community events since winning the title at the Colusa County Fair last year. “I’ve learned so much about just being more out there, putting more of my-

Ruby Herrera Ruby is 10 years old. She is the daughter of Vicente and Carmen Herrera, of Maxwell. “ I would want to be Mini Miss because my sister is going to have a quincinera and she said that she wants to tell people about how she has a little sister who has been in Mini Miss.”

Lina is 11 years old. She is the daughter of Nichelle and Alfonso Perez, of Williams. “ I would like to be Mini Miss Colusa County because I would like to show people that all types of girls like tomboys can win these competitions.”

Makenna is 11 years old. She is the daughter of Tammy and Sherman Dunlap, of Maxwell. “My sister ran for Mini Miss last year and ended up making a lot of new friends. I would like to make new friends as well, and I think it would be terrific to be able to be Mini Miss and represent Colusa at all of the fun events.”

“The whole thing of being Mini Miss, of being in the pageant was just such a great experience,” Traynham said. “I feel like everyone should do it - it’s so much fun.” Trayham will give her final performance during the pageant before she hands off the crown to the 2019 Mini Miss. Although the Colusa

County Fair doesn’t officially open until Thursday, June 6, the pageant draws hundreds of people to the grandstands. Admission is $5 at the gate. Season passes are available at the Colusa County Fair Office and are good for entry into all fair events. ■

This year, I started wrestling and shotgun shooting sports. I feel like doing the Mini Miss pageant is out of my comfort zone, but I believe the experience will give me more self-confidence and help me grow more as person.”

Pratisha Kisun is the 16-year-old daughter of Pradeep and Pranita Kisun, of Williams. She will be a senior next year at Williams High School. Her school activities include art, leadership, and fundraising. She plans to go to a community college after graduation, before transferring to a university to study nursing. Her hobby is photography, but she also enjoys playing basketball for fun with family and friends. Her plans for the summer are to travel with her family and volunteer in the community.

Melissa Ramirez is the 16-year-old daughter of Juan and Maria Ramirez, of Maxwell. She will be a senior next year at Maxwell High School, where she participates in FFA, FBLA, the Associated Student Body, Ag Advisory, basketball, and softball. She is a 4-H teen leader. Her plans for the summer are to attend the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State. She also plans to work at the Maxwell Pool. After graduation, she plans to attend a university to work toward a bachelor’s degree in political science and later go to law school. Her plan for the future is to work as a civil rights attorney or for the United Nations.

Jacee Brackett is the 17-year-old daughter of James Brackett and Skeeter England, of Colusa. She will be a senior next year at Colusa High School, where she participates in FFA, ASB, basketball, softball, track, volleyball, cheerleading, and cross country. Her plans for the summer include working as a lifeguard and on her tan. Her hobbies include playing basketball and baking. After graduation, she plans to attend junior college, where she hopes to continue playing basketball. She eventually plans to join the Air Force and hopes to become a pilot and a physical therapist.

Rosalyn Wilson is the 16-year-old daughter of Joseph and Mary Wilson, of Maxwell. She will be a senior next year at Maxwell High School, where she enjoys being involved in FBLA, FFA, ASB, band, volleyball, basketball, softball, soccer, and tennis. Her hobbies include swimming, playing the ukulele, singing, and hanging out with family and friends. Her plans for the summer include volunteering at a Younglife Camp for teens. After high school, she plans to start her education at a junior college before transferring to a university to become a pediatrician.

Lizeth Madrigal is the 16-year-old daughter of Rafael and Olivia Madrigal, of Williams. She will be a senior next year at Williams High School, where she participates in Educational Talent Search, FFA, FBLA, ASB, Yearbook, soccer, and cheerleading. Her plans for the summer are to continue working at Granzella’s, go to Woodleaf for Younglife, and go to Washington D.C. for a FFA leadership event. Her hobbies include reading, baking, cooking, playing soccer, and watching Netfl ix.

Spooner selected as Grand Marshal

arie Spooner, 98, will serve as Grand Marshal of the Colusa County Fair Parade when it steps off at 6 PM in downtown Colusa. Spooner is a lifetime resident of Colusa County. She was born in 1921 and grew up in the Great Depression, where she learned the importance of maintaining a family garden and sharing its bounty will others. Spooner began entering canned vegetables, jellies, and jams in the Colusa County Fair in the 1970s, and holds the record for the highest number of entries in a given year. In 1994, Spooner had a combined 93 food and garden entries in the County Fair. Although she retired from entering in 2017, Spooner is still an avid gardener and is active in the community. Spooner, a longtime resident of Williams, is also known as a “Rock Star” for baking pies for charity auctions. The Colusa Lions Club and the 44th District Agriculutre Association sponsor the parade, which includes a variety of floats, decorated vehicles, walking groups, service vehicles, and more. ■

One of the iconic events of the Colusa County Fair is the Miss Colusa County Pageant and on Thursday night, Bailey Wilson will hand off her crown to the next Miss Colusa County. Although she is a little saddened by the thought of her reign reaching its conclusion, she has her sights set on the future. Wilson’s goal of becoming a nurse ties in with her experience and duties as the 2018 pageant winner. Caring for people is near and dear to her heart, Wilson said, and she has admired the nurses who cared for her family members. Wilson said people were her favorite part of the Miss Colusa County experience. “I think the best part for me was getting to meet so many people around the community,” Wilson said. The $1,000 scholarship that came with the crown will be utilized strategically. Wilson is attending classes in Butte and after completing her core classes, she intends to enter a nursing program, possibly transferring to California State University at Chico. In addition to her knowledge of American Sign Language, Wilson has a set of pipes, and has been singing the National An-

them at events during her reign. Wilson said that she keeps her crown and sash in a special box so it will always be ready when duty calls. Wilson plans to pass on the box to the next Miss Colusa County who will be crowned at the fair on June 6. Not only will Wilson be giving the new representative a crown and a keepsake box, but she has some words of advice for the next Miss Colusa County. “Try to make it to every single event because those are so much fun,” she said. “And just try to meet as many people as possible because those are the people you’ll have after this experience is done. Just try to make the most memories you can while it lasts because it goes by pretty fast.” Although she has fond memories, Wilson does not intend to compete in future pageants, giving priority to her education. “I had a lot of fun with Miss Colusa County,” said Wilson, “but I think right now I’m just going to focus on my education and career.” Wilson said she has maintained an A in all her classes during her reign but sees the importance of devoting her focus to her classes from here on out. ■

Each year, one lucky boy and girl from ages 5-10 are announced the king and queen of the Colusa County Fair on the Freddie Perez stage in Kids World at 6:30 PM on Thursday, June 6. Lanky the Clown will count the freckles, and spectators will be the judge. No entry fee, no entry form, just show up! ■

The Colusa Lions Club and the 44th District Agricultural Association will cohost the annual Colusa County Fair Parade on Friday, June 7, beginning at 6 PM. Any person or group interested in participating in this year’s parade can pick up a parade entry form at Messick Ace Hardware or the fairgrounds office. There is no fee for parade entry and everyone is welcome to participate. ■

Holding two medals in the world championships of juggling, Jeremiah Johnston’s performances feature thrilling stunts, big laughs, and fantastic displays of dexterity and balance that will captivate audiences of all kinds. Johnston learned to juggle at the young age of 12, and rediscovered after entering college at Humboldt State University in 2005, that juggling was to be his life’s path. He was to become a professional entertainer and instructor, sharing the wonder and joy of juggling with the world. Although he has performed with juggling groups, Johnston has redefined his solo career and created The Throw Zone, a business dedicated to dynamic entertainment, innovation, and education about the juggling arts. Utilizing his many talents, Johnston creates quality performances to suit all ages. ■

FRIDAY, JUNE 7 • GATES OPEN AT NOON FOR SENIORS

The Colusa County Fair will open early on Friday, June 7, for senior citizens age 65 and older. Seniors are invited to attend a free barbecue luncheon at Etchepare Garden, tour the Colusa County Fairgrounds, and browse the exhibits. Senior citizens will also get to see Lanky the Clown twist balloons into animals and other shapes, as well as pet champion chickens and rabbits. The annual senior luncheon is a joint effort of the Colusa Firefighters Association, the Colusa Lions Club, and the Colusa County Fair Foundation. The luncheon gets underway at noon; buildings open at 1 PM. There is no cost of admission at the Colusa County Fair on Friday for senior citizens age 65 and older.

Circus Imagination has been creating an unforgettable interactive experience for children for over 30 years. The show starts under the blue and yellow “Big Top,”where children ages four and up are selected from the audience to dress up in custom-made costumes and be instantly transformed into circus performers. Kids can become Tight Rope Walkers, Lions, Tigers, Bears, Clowns, Butterfly Ballerinas, Cowboys, Cowgirls, Strongman and even get shot out of the “Kid Blaster” as a Human Cannon Ball. Circus Imagination uses interactive theater to encourage kids to be active and play outside. Entertainment Spotlight Chad Bushnell Thursday, June 6 ■ 6 PM - 8 PM - 10 PM Festival Hall Stage The Red Bluff native has been playing the guitar and singing since he was four years old, taking after his father, who played lead guitar and sang in a country band. Bushnell grew up singing the National Anthem at numerous rodeos, football games, and community events, and, as a country singer, he has opened for big names in the industry like Scotty McCreery and Mark Chesnutt. His newest album “Rodeo Dance” was recorded at After Hours Recorders in Redding, and includes new originals and covers of well-known rodeo songs. He also has an album out called “Tennessee” that was recorded in Nashville at Studio 19 and a two-song EP out called “What They Ain’t Tellin’ Us” that was recorded at Hag Studios. Bad Moon Rising Thursday, June 6 ■ 7 PM & 9 PM Sun Valley Rice Stage Bad Moon Rising, a tribute act to Creedence Clearwater Revival, one of the greatest rock bands of all time, will perform two shows on Thursday, June 6, at the Colusa County Fair. Steve Combs, who is known for playing the hits of CCR “just like the record,” formed the group in 2008. Combs is the lead guitarist and the “John Fogerty” of the band. He also plays keys and harmonica. Bad Moon Rising, based out of Texas, will hit the Sun Valley Rice Stage at 7 PM and 9 PM. ■

Bobby Zoppi & the Corduroys Thursday, June 6 ■ 5 PM - 6:30 PM - 8 PM Festival Hall Stage Bobby Zoppi has been a lead singer and songwriter for many years. He has had three major recording contracts in the music business starting with Qwest/Warner Brothers Records in the 90s. “The Corduroys” are rooted in Zoppi’s early roots in country music. He grew up listening to the likes of George Jones, Randy Travis, and George Straight but has also been influence by Tim McGraw and Rascal Flatts, and is currently a big fan of Florida Georgia Line, Kenny Chesney, and Luke Brian, among others. The Corduroys will perform many of the old school hits as well as current countryrock tunes at 5 PM, 6:30 PM, and 8 PM. ■

Kymmi Redden started singing at a very early age and she hasn’t stopped. With grit like Janice Joplin and the smooth velvet edge of great female country vocalists, she has evolved into something that is a cross between country, rock, and blues - with a jazzy twist. At 13, Star began touring the Western U.S., covering all the latest and greatest singers with her intuitive vocals and undeniable presence.
