In this year’s edition of HouseCalls, we hope to share with you the progress William Newton Hospital (WNH) has made over the past year. Earlier this year, we opened the doors to the H. L. Snyder Medical Foundation

Surgery Center, which streamlines all surgical care including pre-operative care, post-operative care, and recovery. In spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, our surgery center has been extremely busy providing safe, high quality patient care with greater efficiency. We are pleased to share that an unprecedented 70 percent of all surgeries performed in Cowley County this past year were done at WNH. Similarly, over 66 percent of all inpatient care (medical, ICU, labor & delivery) provided in Cowley County was also provided here. We thank you for entrusting William Newton Hospital with these and other healthcare needs.

WNH has become a leading community hospital in the state of Kansas and a

model for success in rural healthcare nationwide. Our strength continues to be the personalized, compassionate patient care that is often not found in a larger medical center. Also worthy of mention, despite the temporary setbacks of this year's COVID-19 pandemic, is our history of financial strength, a position which we have been fortunate to be in, all without the need for taxpayer assistance. This scenario is virtually unheard of among rural community hospitals, and we owe it all to YOU, our supporters, who choose us for your healthcare needs. Thank you for your confidence and trust!

Expanding Orthopedic, Sports Medicine, & Trauma Care

In an exclusive partnership with Advanced Orthopaedic Associates, PA, (AOA) the largest orthopedic group in Wichita, Kansas, William Newton Orthopaedics provides specialized orthopedic care and sports medicine on the WNH campus. As of December 2020, AOA also provides trauma care to the WNH emergency department. A team of skilled trauma surgeons is on call 365/24/7 to care for patients with critical injuries. The newest orthopedist to provide care William Newton Hospital is Dr. Randall Lais, board certified orthopedic traumatologist. Dr. Lais is the hospital's primary trauma surgeon, with Dr. Thomas Hendricks providing secondary response. Trauma surgeons deliver life-saving care by treating bone fractures, cuts, internal injuries, burns, and shock.

Over the past 18 months, WNH has added many new service lines, clinics, physicians, and surgeons. William Newton Orthopaedics, William Newton Foot & Ankle, and William Newton Interventional Radiology are among several new additions now accepting new patients.

At the William Newton Orthopaedics clinic, board certified orthopedic surgeons and a staff of highly trained surgical assistants provide surgical and non-surgical solutions for the best possible medical outcome. The surgeons utilize the state-of-the-art orthopedic suite in the expanded H. L. Snyder Medical Foundation Surgery Center. Our orthopedics and sports medicine providers include Dr. Kenneth Jansson, Dr. Phillip Hagan, Dr. Thomas Hendricks, and Dr. Harry Morris. Services include orthopedic surgery, joint replacement, sports medicine, fracture care, joint revision, bone health, pediatric orthopedics, upper extremity, knee surgery, shoulder surgery, and hand surgery.

The new interventional radiology clinic at WNH started seeing patients in October 2020 at the Winfield Healthcare Center. In addition to clinic visits, our interventional radiologists perform various minimally invasive procedures at the H. L. Snyder Medical Foundation Surgery Center using medical imaging guidance. With the addition of this service, we are able to provide highly specialized care right here in Winfield,

saving you the trip to Wichita or another larger city. Using the new cath lab, we are able to treat kidneys, veins, arteries, and other organs, and perform other interventional procedures.

This has been an interesting year for all of us. A big change this year in the foundation is that our annual gala—for the safety of our guests—was moved online. That night, we made a little less than our annual in-person event, but are overwhelmed by the support we continue to have for this event and for our hospital. Our goal for this event was $50,000. Donations continue to come in after the event totaling over $48,000, a record sum raised for this event.

All $48,000 will benefit the long-term vision of William Newton Hospital's Second Century Campaign, directly impacting the care given to thousands of patients that come through our doors each year. Pivoting to virtual prompted us to incorporate technology in new ways and enabled us to connect with donors who wouldn’t have been able to attend otherwise. In the future, our team plans to integrate some of those virtual aspects used this year to extend the foundation’s reach during the fundraiser.

In addition to the change in our gala, our 6-Phase, 10-year Second Century Campaign has been put on pause. Due to obvious reasons, we are unable to proceed with Phase 2 (emergency department expansion), but we are still actively engaging with you to show you how your $4.6 million investment for Phase 1 (expansion of the surgery center; now named the H. L. Snyder Medical

Foundation Surgery Center) is positively impacting and changing the healthcare services we are able to offer you. Hopefully you have been receiving our bi-weekly newsletter, Connect During COVID, outlining the impact of your investment.

We here at the foundation remain grateful for our donors who continue to give even in these uncertain times. I walk down the hall regularly to check in with the nurses on 2East. One of them mentioned, “We really appreciate when people bring by food and do things for us.” This year I just want to say thank you again and remind you that the good things you are doing are being recognized, not only by our office and board members, but by the staff that utilizes this facility and all of the new services.

FROM THE COMMUNITY: Generations of Caring & Commitment Our family, like a great number of families in our community, has been fortunate enough to have benefited from the excellent medical care we have received at William Newton Hospital. For four generations, starting with my husband’s WANDA ANDREAS Community Member/Patient father and mother, the lives of our family members have been touched by the professional and CARING medical staff at our local hospital.

Speaking from my own personal experiences, of which there have been many, I can truthfully say that I wouldn’t actually be writing this right now if it weren’t for the dedicated and well-trained doctors, nurses, and aides I have been blessed to receive such excellent medical treatment and care from over the course of many years here at WNH. I know how important it is that every person in our community has access to the same quality care and COMMITMENT that we are so lucky to have available to us here in our home town! I honestly CANNOT say enough to convey the wonderful, top notch care they have provided for me personally and I know they provide for others as well.

The caring staff at this hospital does not just consist of doctors and nurses, though. No, it infiltrates into every department. It starts when you walk in and are greeted by the staff at the front desk, always ready to get you where you need to go with a quickness–whether it is to the emergency room or the lab. They are always friendly, professional, and competent. It helps to make you feel at ease and sets the tone for your visit to the hospital.

The caring doesn’t stop there, it includes the housekeeping staff, like the sweet Cyndee Unger who always has a smile and kind word of encouragement for everyone she meets, and Danny in maintenance, who cheerfully does everything asked of him because he’s needed and obviously loves what he does - even if it means pulling an extra shift (Yes, I noticed when I was there one of many nights).

If you are staying as an inpatient, James in the kitchen is another bright star in your day who will bring your meals and serve them up with kindness and concern, making sure you have what you need within the parameters of your doctor’s orders, of course! There are the reassuring radiology techs and staff who are so careful to make you as comfortable as possible when performing diagnostic tests and x-rays.

They do it brilliantly and compassionately even when they are challenged with how to get a large person, like myself,

onto a very small table and still not cause excruciating pain.

They manage to do so while leaving you with a feeling of dignity and respect. The quality of the staff includes the phlebotomists and lab technicians who try to get that blood in just one stick, and then carefully perform the requested tests so they can get the most accurate information possible in order to provide physicians with the data they need for diagnosis and treatment.

There are so many quality medical services available at WNH that I personally have been blessed to receive excellent care from, including physical therapy, pulmonary, cardiac care, wound care, and most recently the addition of the new surgery & recovery center and infusion area making many more procedures available locally.

I have to say, when it comes to quality, up-to-date medical care this hospital has it going on and then some!

The staff, at all levels, strives to make this hospital the best it can be and to care for patients as if they are family. After all, where else does a Cardiology/ICU Nurse, who is just going off shift for the day, turn around and go back to the

floor to monitor your care personally until the wee hours of the morning because she knows you are in critically serious danger and you need her? Susan, Nancy, and Barb are just a few of the nurses I have been blessed to have had on my care team over the years. After many hospital experiences at literally ALL the hospitals in Wichita and Winfield, I will choose William Newton Hospital EVERY TIME! We are so blessed to have such a wide variety of services and medical care available to us right here in Winfield. Small hospitals are failing all over our country at an alarming rate.

Since 2010, 113 rural hospitals have closed across the country and 5 of those were in Kansas.

It is up to us to do everything we can to see that the tireless individuals and hometown heroes at our community hospital have the most upto-date facility, equipment, and support they need to do their jobs to the best of their abilities. This is especially crucial now during times of change and as the hospital experiences growth. It is for this reason I feel compelled to appeal to everyone to do what they can, however small or large, to support our local hospital.

We all need to do our part to help ensure that Winfield has excellent medical care for many generations to come.

With representatives from three different areas, hear how some of our most recent employees of the quarter are adapting in their individual departments to keep you safe and how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed their job.

HOW HAS YOUR JOB CHANGED SINCE THE PANDEMIC BEGAN? Spring: My job actually started to change once we heard the pandemic would occur. We held meetings, developed policies, and we were ready before our first patient arrived.

It put me at ease knowing everyone would be following the same guidelines.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE THE COMMUNITY TO KNOW ABOUT THE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS PUT IN PLACE TO PROTECT PATIENTS, STAFF, AND THE PUBLIC? James: We have a solid screening process, not only at the front lobby but in each department.

Jamie: As frustrating as it can be, it is all done with the community’s well-being as the primary goal.

Spring: Safety precautions may change depending on CDC guidelines, and what is happening within the community. I would like people to be patient with the screening process at the front entrance. Our goal is to keep everyone safe and provide the best care possible to all of our patients.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU SEE IN YOUR DEPARTMENT RIGHT NOW? Spring: Keeping the staff healthy, so we have adequate staff to care for patients. If a staff member is out due to COVID-19, we are ready to cover those shifts.

OUR COMMUNITY HAS SHOWN A GREAT DEAL OF SUPPORT - DONATING SUPPLIES, FOOD, PPE - WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SAY TO THOSE WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED? James: Thanks for the kind donations during difficult times.

Jamie: Much appreciated! Feels good to have community support.

Spring: It would have been difficult without the help of the community. I wasn’t sure if we would have the amount of PPE needed. I was overjoyed when I went to purchasing and found that so many in the community had helped out.

It makes our job easier knowing others support us.

YOU WERE SELECTED AS EMPLOYEE OF THE QUARTER BECAUSE YOU CONSISTENTLY EXEMPLIFY WNH’S STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE. TELL US ABOUT THE TEAMWORK AND DEDICATION YOU’VE SEEN DURING THE PANDEMIC? James: Nursing & dietary managed to work together really well, even with all of the unfamiliar changes.

Jamie: Radiology came together and worked out a new schedule to compensate for fewer outpatient exams.

Spring: When it was decided to only have essential staff at the hospital, I witnessed the most incredible team work. We cross-trained staff to conserve PPE and to limit the amount of exposure to the virus. Every department stepped up to do their part in this fight against COVID-19.

Some have been asked to take on new responsibilities that otherwise were foreign to them. It has truly been a team effort.

The COVID-19 pandemic slammed healthcare facilities across the globe with an increased demand for PPE and medical supplies/equipment, and tested healthcare workers as they battled the virus every day caring for their community. At William Newton Hospital, we were lucky enough to get ahead of the virus. Starting with the formation of our ICS (Incident Command System) Team, we implemented safety practices, trained staff to properly treat COVID-19 patients, and established isolation units before cases began appearing in our area. To minimize the spread and keep our employees safe, several non-clinical staff worked from home in the spring, and again late fall. The support from our community has been tremendous. Community members and local businesses have stepped up to help donate PPE or meals for our staff, and even organized a ‘Headlights for Heroes’ caravan in front of the hospital to thank our frontline staff for keeping our hospital running in the midst of the unprecedented health crisis. We can’t thank everyone enough for all of the support and care we have received over the past several months and in the coming months as we continue to fight another wave of the pandemic. Thank you for standing with us and keeping our #frontlinestrong.

Pain management services are provided at William Newton Hospital through a partnership with Pain Management Associates out of Wichita.

Our highly trained and experienced pain management physicians see patients in Winfield every other Thursday. They are dedicated to the care of patients with pain, predominantly arising from the spine. Our newest member, Dr. Thomas Frimpong, is a board certified neurosurgeon with fellowship training in minimally invasive and complex spine surgery. Dr. Milton Landers is a board certified anesthesiologist with more than 30 years experience in managing many types of pain, specifically pain from the spine. He has lectured and taught nationally and internationally and is a recognized expert in many aspects of interventional pain management. Dr. Rodney Jones is board certified in anesthesiology, interventional pain management, and addiction medicine. He has provided pain management services for the Winfield and Arkansas City region for over 30 years.
