This is special! ‘Flamenco at the Station’ is set in the beautiful main train station of Valencia. In Spanish, it is known as ‘Estación del Norte’ with its distinctive, modernist design. INTERVIEW WITH FESTIVAL DIRECTOR CARLOS MADRID 1. What is CINE JOVE?

It is the festival where the best international cinema, directed by young people, is screened. 2. Tell us more about the ‘WEBSERIES’

There is no doubt that Webseries in general have experienced an unstoppable growth regarding the public’s interest in recent years. Naturally, the Internet has been the best ally for its dissemination. Through Webseries, creators with few resources but a lot of talent have produced & directed works that have ended up having millions of followers (this has been the case with ‘Malviviendo’ or ‘Paquita Salas’ in Spain). At the ‘Octubre Centre’ near the Plaza Ayuntamiento, ‘Cine Jove’ is proud to present the latest & best of the international panorama regarding Webseries. This specialist section will be showing for the third consecutive year, which is a sign of

just how popular Webseries have become. 3. Can you explain more about the different sections at this year’s CINE JOVE?

The non-competitive sections are held mostly in the ‘Centro del Carmen’ in the historic centre. There will be a section dedicated to the young Brian de Palma, which concern films that were made before his 40th birthday. On the other hand, the ‘Luna de Valencia’ Prize (to the producer Fernando Bovaira) is accompanied by his most famous films, especially ‘Los Amantes del Círculo Polar’, directed by Julio Medem. There is another more extensive section, which is devoted to electronic music. . 4. Can you tell us more about the films of the young BRIAN DE PALMA that will be screened…

Brian de Palma’s young films already had some of the hallmarks that were to define his films: the taste for thrillers mixed with eroticism, the supernatural, personality conflicts and so on… In addition to the famous ‘Carrie’ or ‘Dressed to Kill’, I recommend a rarity that we will be its premiere(first

public presentation) in Spain: ‘Murder à la Mod’, that was released in 1968! The film features an interesting game with time and already the young director displays the obsessions that will later be developed in films like ‘Greetings’ or ‘Phantom of the Paradise’, that are also both in this section. 5. What can the public experience via ‘BEATS & FRAMES’?

This is a selection of the best cinema about electronic music, approaching it from the most varied points of view: the DJs and producers (Daft Punk Unchained, We Are Your Friends, Raw Chicks, Berlin), the music rooms (Eden, 24 Hour Party People), the festivals (Under the Electric Sky) or the creators of new electronic instruments (Moog). In addition, the sessions will be accompanied by sessions from some of the best Valencian DJs. 6. Please describe the philosophy behind ‘DIGITAL JOVE’

Hard Rock Valencia is easy to find as it is just off Plaza Ayuntamiento, so it as central as can be. If you are arriving from the main Valencia train station, it is literally across the road! A couple of the ‘24/7 Valencia’ team popped into Hard Rock Valencia for an early lunch on a mellow Monday and a chance to check out the music memorabilia that adorns the walls as soon as you enter this long, attractive and very spacious bar & restaurant… Immediately, one of us spotted Noel Gallagher’s Danelectro electric guitar on the wall and the other clocked Madonna’s famous black corset on the wall opposite! Flamenco lovers can admire Raimundo Amador Spanish guitar. Rockers can check out Pretender Chrissie Hynde’s Telecaster as well as Bruce Springsteen’s tour top. Others that stick in the memory were Rod Stewart’s stripy trousers from the 70s & Joan Jett’s leather pants and the late Chris Cor-

nell’s guitar from Soundgarden. We even came across Sting’s keyboard and trainers from Robbie Williams! There are many more objects lining the walls on both floors, covering a good number of genres of music too… For lunch, we decided to try out the current ‘World Burger Tour’, which we ordered with some tasty fries and couple of refreshing Spanish beers. Seated on a stage which features monthly live music, we decided to share our exotic & healthy Vietnamese burger and enormous German burger, noticing the contrast between the Asian and Northern European approach to cuisine… Suffice to say, we were impressed by the freshness and generous portions! The ‘Schnitzel burger’ was really superb, very filling and impressive. A true giant amongst burgers! The Vietnamese ‘Banh Mi’ is one of the staff’s favourites, which is a really good recommendation! We didn’t

even need dessert or milkshakes as we were completely sated by what we had. Everyone has different tastes and the Hard Rock menu & carta is very ample, so there is a “helluva lotta” choice here. They have a family menu too so everyone really is welcome. Hard Rock Valencia’s pretty cool music video soundtrack was nice and eclectic. We enjoyed the differing rhythms and melodies of Beyoncé, White Stripes, Justin Bieber and Coldplay on screens as we lunched & travelled on our ‘World Burger’ journey around the globe! The service was very friendly, kind and efficient so feel free to ask the experienced and informed staff for advice regarding brunch, lunch, dinner and more… INTERVIEW VALENCIA

GINEBRE Established in 2008, ‘Ginebre’ has built up a very well-deserved reputation amongst diners who appreciate its excellent dishes and the warm, dynamic chef owner Javier Puchades. Based in the upmarket Avenida Aragón area, this is a creative fusion restaurant that has truly earned its stripes over the last decade. The menu changes everyday, which they tell us makes for an interesting challenge. It means the experienced chefs gets to continuously create and to keep the cuisine a welcome surprise for the weekly customers. At its heart, the cuisine is Mediterranean with interesting fusion touches from faraway lands like Japan, Peru or Mexico as well as neighbouring Morocco. It is a very attractive combination of top quality ingredients, that are fresh from the port area, combined with

experience, cariño and genius touches of innovation and daring by chef owner Javier and his team. Thirty five years ago, his mother set up one of the very first vegetarian restaurants in Valencia. Javier therefore grew up in the restaurant world, and all that that entails, from an early age. An economist by profession, he carried on helping out his mother at weekends at her restaurant. When establishing ‘Ginebre’, he returned to his love of food full-time, got a good team together for this long-term project and it has deservedly become a real success with a loyal clientele too. It is clear that chef owner Javier is not only a creative soul but very welcoming and sincere with the public too. He is talented yet humble about his gifts. He loves to experiment with food and to make people happy, which is not as easy as it may sound. It requires effort, imagination and integrity to keep

those kind of standards up over so many years. ‘Ginebre’ can justly claim to be a king on the restaurant scene with more than one crown, given their sheer choice of over 100 superb GINS to choose from. As Javier wryly added: “We didn’t want to be known only for our gins and, fortunately, it has worked out that we’ve become known for our cuisine too!” You’ll find all their gins listed on their website. We popped by on a sultry spring evening during the week as the restaurant can get very popular at weekends so best to reserve beforehand. There was an ample terrace outside with professional locals, in solidarity, enjoying some pre-dinner Vermouths as dusk drew in. We opted for the indoors to get a proper feel for the interior. Inside, ‘Ginebre’ has a modern “New York” sophisticated vibe with a jazz music soundtrack adding to the mix.

Indeed, there is a huge photograph of jazz musicians overlooking the dining room for groups at the back and the ‘Gin Bar’ looks onto the main room. With warmish colours, modern art on display and very distinctive lights by ‘Fambuena’ overhead, it made for a relaxing atmosphere. Having chosen our menu, we asked for a bottle of white wine from their ample bodega to accompany our dinner. Javier recommended a ‘Pekado Mortal’ Albariño (Rias Baixas) that was quite smooth, gently refreshing and suited the variety of dishes that we savoured. We started off the proceedings with some very distinctive homemade hummus with an aroma & taste that set it apart from the norm. Our next dish was the ‘Russian Salad Ginebre.’ It was a lovingly light, fresh & zingy combination of flavours. The more subtle matices contrasted well with the presence of some of the

freshest tuna we’ve ever tried. It was topped by an eye-catchingly creamy, lime mayonnaise and artistically presented with artisanal toasted bread. Arguably, the most potent dish of the night was the Valencian ‘Cloxinas’ (mussels) in an escabeche sauce with green curry, onion and mustard seeds. It was explosive and absolutely packed with flavour…very rich, tangy and delicious! It had the punch and presence of what you would expect from a much larger dish, which is no easy feat.”Una pasada!” in the highly impressed opinion of the Spanish speaking member of the team. To cool things down, we were next presented with ‘Buñuelos de bacalao,’ which were cod fritters with a light, crunchy exterior and fluffy interior, accompanied by a delicate aioli sauce. It was deliberately understated, as a respite from the

power of the previous dish. This restaurant understands a thing or three about contrast & timing… Next up was the ‘Ravioli.’ A minimalist presentation, it was beautifully textured, with the beef cooked just right: “en su punto” & combining well with the exquisite pastry. The ravioli was bedded in a Thai Soup of ginger and coconut with a touch of coriander & cardamom that really added something special to the dish and left a lovely after-taste... Our ‘merluza con all i pebre’ was a grilled, line-caught hake with local eels that was soft & tender on the palate with a delicate flavour and subtle sauce that had a memorable undertow. It was a gentle & delicious plato that was finely prepared to last the distance… To follow, we shared their recommended ‘Secreto de Vaca a La Brasa’ which was a grilled steak that Article © 2018 24/ 7 Valencia

SWEETCORN SOUP WITH LICHIS & HUITLACOCHE As the heat rises, June’s recipe takes its inspiration from Mexican ingredients; a soup of sweetcorn that also uses the unusual ingredient ‘huitlacoche’, also known in English by the curious name of “Corn Smut” or “Devil’s Corn”. Without getting smutty, this is an extremely odd and unusual looking ingredient. It is actually a fungal disease that infects the corn and stunts the growth of its kernels. It has been revered as a culinary delicacy since the days of the ancient Aztecs who believed it possessed mystical and even aphrodisiacal powers. Surprisingly for a fungal disease, it also has nutritional benefits!* The fungus, which we shall call truffle-corn, has notably more protein than healthy corn and a far greater portion of lysine… an essential amino acid. So, it seems a little bit of smut perhaps can be good for us! Despite the Mexican influence, this recipe will not send you rushing for the fire extinguisher as it is peppered only with a hint of jalapeño and a Peruvian yellow pepper paste. It is however absolutely delicious and was a sure winner in our recent tapas menu at ‘Gourmet Knights’ (Fridays and Saturdays in La Ola Fresca). Yet another spectacular creation of our Gourmet Knight, Alberto Corella.

Method Roast the cobs for forty minutes in an oven at 170°. Blend with the rest of the ingredients (except the lichis and the huitlacoche). Add salt and pepper. INGREDIENTS FOR 4 PEOPLE: - 2 corn cobs - 1/2 leek - 1 carrot - 1 garlic - 1/2 onion - 1/2 glass of water - 1/2 litre of oat milk (you can use soya but make sure it is not sweetened) - 1 small teaspoon of ‘ají amarillo’ (Peruvian yellow pepper paste). - 2 lichis

Bring the mix slowly to the boil. Sieve well and leave to cool. When you are ready to serve, add four halves of the lichi and one piece (in the centre of the plate) of the ‘huitlacoche’.

- 1 soup spoon of ‘huitlacoche’ - Huitlacoche is sold either fresh, canned or frozen and you can find in the Mercado Central at La Dispensa de Frida and good delicatessens shops. * If you are pregnant you should be aware that it was once used to induce labour. -Salt -Pepper -A little pinch of jalapeño.

In front of ‘Las Arenas’ beach is a Spanish school for foreigners with a lot of charm called Solea Spanish School. It is located in the neighborhood of Cabanyal, a unique barrio that is famous throughout Europe thanks to its unique architecture, rich history and justly proud inhabitants. This school opened its doors in 2013 and since then many students have passed through it. The nationalities have been very varied, from New Zealand to Canada. WORLD CUP FOOTBALL 2018 THE WORLD IS ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN When Russia’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup was pronounced successful in Zurich in 2010, the then Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko stated: “We can promise you a World Cup you will never forget. Let us make history together. ” With Sepp Blatter’s backing, Russia easily shrugged off challenges from combined bids from Spain/Portugal and Belgium/Netherlands. England’s 15 million application only got two of the 22 votes and was eliminated in the first round… leaving ambassadors David Cameron, David Beckham and Prince William looking red-faced and perplexed. Almost immediately rumblings of fixing surfaced. Since then, Mutko has been at the centre of a wideranging doping allegation against Russian athletics and Blatter has

been banned from football for years by the Fifa Ethics Committee. In April of this year, David Cameron was still unflinching in his assertion that corruption had played a major part in Russia being awarded the quadrennial event. Football fans are now poised to see if Mutko’s words will ring true and the world is on the outside looking in, hoping that Russia can emulate the excellent World Cups that took place in South Africa and Brazil in recent years. Their trial run with the Sochi Winter Olympics was touted as a great success by the Russian media. However, the Western press has been much more pessimistic, suggesting that the city is now a ghost town with lots of unfinished “white elephant” buildings. Like the Summer Olympics in Athens, their vibrant stadiums are now virtually abandoned or used sparingly to half full audiences. The fear is that several of the 12 venues being used in Russia will suffer a similar fate. The Ekaterinburg Arena is a case in point. Fifa requires venues to hold at least 35,000 spectators. With a natural capacity of 23,000 spectators, temporary stands will be erected outside the perimeter

of the stadium to reach the required threshold. 12,000 fans will literally be on the outside looking in. Afterwards, will its newly built hotel and its fitness centre and Valeological Centre still get used on a regular basis? Perhaps, but it is doubtful. Another small concern prior to the Finals is the muted response to the official World Cup Song. Shakira’s ‘Waka Waka’ did much to define the event in South Africa with its catchy chorus and goofy dance. Even Pitbull's ‘We Are One (Ole Ola)’ encompassed the carnival spirit that the Brazil World Cup embraced. Russia’s offering comes from Will Smith and is entitled ‘Live it Up’ and it has divided fans. In collaboration with Puerto Rican reggae artist Nicky Jam and Albanian Era Istrefi, it gravitates more towards the streets of Latin America than the suburbs of Moscow or St Petersburg. On the other hand, the World Cup Mascot for 2018 has certainly captured the imagination. Zabivaka the Wolf, with his trendy sunglasses and wool T-shirt, was a clear winner in an internet poll. Student designer Ekaterina Bocharova’s creation received 53% of the vote from the one million plus voters, almost twice

as many as its nearest rival. Expect to hear the wolf howling throughout the tournament. The World Cup draw itself created some interesting match ups amongst the 32 teams. The first match of the tournament sees Russia take on Saudi Arabia and a Valencia interest with both sides. Dennis Cheryshev, who was on loan with Los Che last year, may well start for the hosts. Saudi manager Juan Antonio Pizzi (former Valencia CF manager) will be hoping to emulate the success he had when he was the manager of Chile. A win for the Arab side in the opening encounter would rank alongside his achievement in winning the Copa America Centenario in 2016 for the South American country, who just failed to qualify for the World Cup this time round. Group A is completed by Egypt and Uruguay. Hector Cuper, another previous Valencia manager, is at the helm of Egypt… who will be praying Mo Salah has recovered from his Champions League injury at the hands of Sergio Ramos. Uruguay meanwhile will rely heavily on the Atlético Madrid pair Diego Godin and José María Giménez in defence and the temperamental, maverick striker Luis Suarez. European-South American progress seems on the cards.

Valencia fans celebrated Rodrigo’s inclusion in ‘La Selección’ but were disappointed not to see Dani Parejo going to the World Cup after an excellent season in Valencia’s midfield. Alba, Isco and David Silva have also played for Valencia CF in the past. Portugal had Cancelo, Nani, Manny Fernandes, Guedes and Andre Gomes in the initial squad of 29 but when it was cut to the maximum 23 Nani, Gomes and surprisingly Cancelo were told they would not be Moscow bound. Morocco and Iran complete the group and look to be playing for third and fourth place. Yassine Bounou (Bono) applies his trade as a goalkeeper with Girona in La Liga and could put himself in the shop window of bigger clubs, whilst Iran have the “Persian Pogba” Saeid Ezatolahi in their squad. The

In Group C we have France, Australia, Peru and Denmark. France should cruise into the group stages but may rue not including Geoffrey Kongdobia in their squad at the business end of the competition. With Koscielny of Arsenal injured, Adil Rami may get some playing time at the heart of the French defence. Playing time may also come to Matthew Ryan in the Australian goal but he is unlikely to be first choice for the Socceroos. Meanwhile, sentimentalists are hoping Tim Cahill will make it onto the plane when their final squad is cut from 32 to 23 in the next few days. Peru look like they will struggle to get out of the group and their cause has not been helped by their skipper Paulo Guerrero being banned for testing positive for cocaine. The substance was allegedly in a tea he drank and he had the support of the rival captains in Group C who all wrote a letter to the football’s governing body requesting he be allowed to play. He has been granted leave to play at World Cup. Denmark could be the dark horses and Valencia target Daniel Wass could get his move from Celta Vigo with a good World Cup performance. Argentina, Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria make up Group D. No place for Garay in the Argentina squad and Fernando Gaga is ruled out through injury. However, Otamendi and

Banega do make the squad that will, as always, rely heavily on Leo Messi. Iceland topped their group in the qualifying stages, relegating Croatia into the runners up spot. Another performance like the one that toppled England in the 2016 Euros would send the smallest nation ever to participate in the World Cup into raptures once again. For Croatia, expect Rakitic and Modric to forget their ‘El Clásico’ differences and combine well at this World Cup to reverse their group stage rankings with Iceland. Nigeria look set to struggle despite having John Obi Mikel, Victor Moses and Alex Iwobi in their line up. Brazil, minus Valencia goalkeeper Neto, head Group E. They are joined by Switzerland, Costa Rica and Serbia. It looks on paper that Brazil will win the group easily and the other three will be fighting for the runners up spot. Kaylor Navas, the Real Madrid goalkeeper who once played at Levante UD, should stimulate interest amongst the football fans in the city when Brazil are not playing. Germany are one of the favourites and they play in Group F along with

Mexico, Sweden and South Korea. Mustafi has paid the price for a bad season with Arsenal by being omitted from the squad. With the international retirement of Zlatan Ibrahimović, the Swedish attack looks somewhat goal-shy. Former Valencia CF player Andrés Guardado still has a major part to play in the Mexico midfield. In Son Heung-min, South Korea have one of the most underestimated players in World Football. The Tottenham star could well be the difference in helping the Asian side join Germany in the latter stages of the competition. England have a decent draw in Group G, facing Panama, Tunisia and Belgium. Panama are playing in their first ever World Cup and are celebrating the mere fact they are competing. It would be a major shock if they took points from any of the other teams. Gareth Southgate goes for youth but still has to settle on a first choice goalkeeper. On paper, England should be too strong for Tunisia who have just lost their best player Msakni to injury. Belgium, on the other hand, are packed with quality. Courtois, Kompany, Hazard, De Bruyne, Benteke…the list goes on and on. If they gel as a team and if

the trio of Vertonghen, Vermaelen and Toby Alderweireld can shore up the defence of the ‘Red Devils’ …then they could well go deep into the competition. Group H will see match ups between Poland, Senegal, Japan and Columbia. Probably the most difficult group to call, it could all boil down to which striker converts the most chances for each team. Take your pick from Robert Lewandowski, Sadio Mané, Shinji Okazaki and Radamel Falcao to decide who will progress from these teams. When the final is contested on the 15th July in the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow the legacy of the World Cup in Russia will still be taking shape. The big question being asked will be: “Is the outside world still looking in or have they totally switched off?" ‘From Russia with Love’ would be a much better epitaph than ‘The World is not Enough.’ Let us hope the Soviets deliver the goods and give the fans a tournament to remember long into the next decade. This will help smooth the transition for the next World Cup in Qatar 2022, which in itself is a whole new ball game…

The warm days are upon us so it’s time for a long, cool drink. Valencia has two of its very own. Well, ‘Horchata’ was invented in the Sudan and ‘Agua de Valencia’ is really just Buck’s Fizz with a twist. However, let’s not get caught up with details, these days they are both considered as Valencian as paella, fireworks and construction companies. Horchata is a bit of an acquired taste. While some would go miles out of their way in the summer heat for just a sip, others would go even more miles just to avoid the stuff. One person we spoke to described it as milk mixed with sand. It looks and tastes like a sort of nutty milkshake, although, actually, there’s no milk in it. It is made from crushed “chufas” or tiger nuts and water. Sometimes in a sort of slush puppy form, it’s always cool and refreshing. Befitting its cough medicine texture,

it’s really good for you. Rich in iron and potassium, it has diuretic and energy-restoring properties, sort of a medieval Lucozade really. The chufa originates from the Chuf area of Sudan. It was one of the first plants to be cultivated by man. They found sacks full of the things in Tutankhamen’s tomb just in case he fancied a few glasses of Horchata in the afterlife, we suppose. The chufa, like most good things, was brought to Valencia by the Moors around the year 700. However, it wasn’t until the Christian conquest that Horchata got its name, or so legend has it. Some days after the conquest the conquering Christian King Jaime I was riding round the huertas in the Muslim farmlands of Alboraya, surveying his newly conquered properties. It was a hot and dusty day and a Moorish peasant woman offered

him a drink. “What is this?” he asked as he gulped down the flavoursome nectar (or milk with sand, depending on your taste). “Aixo es llet de Xufa, Senyor” (it’s Chufa milk, sir) replied the Moorish woman in perfect Valenciano. “Aixo no es llet de xufa, aixo es or, xata” (that’s not chufa milk, that’s gold my girl or words to that effect). And so the name “or xata” or horchata was born. Just why the King was riding around on his own amongst his enemies just days after a fierce battle, just why he accepted a dodgy looking drink from one of them and, indeed, who exactly recorded this conversation has been lost to history but that’s the only explanation you’ll get round here. Horchata has become the archetypal Valencian Summer drink. Valencians flock to cool off in the ceramic-tiled Horchatarías dotted all around the city, typically

decorated in clinical white and blue with wrought iron tables and chairs for maximum cooling effect. One of the most famous is the 200 year-old ‘Horchatería Santa Catalina’ opposite the bell tower of the Santa Catalina church, tucked away just off the corner of the Plaza de la Reina. If you want to go to the real home of horchata take the short trip out by bus or metro to Alboraya, which skirts the city to the North West. The place is like an horchata theme park with huge palatial horchaterías all along the main street. The jewel in the crown being Horchatería Daniel named after its founder Daniel Tortajada, the most famous “orxater” of them all. He started off with a small bar in the centre of the village before moving to the present vast hall serving, along with the horchata, all manner of ice creams and sweet cakes

all made on the premises. Most Valencians enjoy a good farton with their horchata, a long sausage shaped sweet bun covered in icing. Apart from having a name that cries out for infantile jokes, it’s perfect for dunking into your drink. Horchatería Daniel has served horchatas to Kings, princes, writers and stars of stage and screen. The walls are decorated with photos of Daniel with football stars and the likes of writer Camila José Cela and painter Salvador Dalí. Ernest Hemingway also came here but refused to drink horchata and had a glass of wine instead…

WHY VALENCIAN ROSADOS ARE A GOOD BET IN 2018 We are sure that we have commented before on why Valencian Rosado wines are a must drink in Summer. This has mainly been because it is simply too hot to drink red wine between June and September. Rosados enjoy the body of red wines but the acidity and freshness of white wines and we have yet to find any food with which they do not match. This Summer there are several other reasons to consider them! Firstly, the grape harvest in most of Europe was down by 30-40% because of frosts in Spring and storms later in the year, which reduced the crop severely. France

has been a major supplier of Rosados and here the harvest was particularly hard hit. Carrefour have been a bellwether for French rosados and it will be interesting to see whether they have the same number of wines this year! Another reason is that 2017 was a particularly good year for Rosado from Valencia’s wine regions. Although bodegas have traditionally not made large amounts of this style of wine because they have not been popular, this is all changing. In our tastings, we are noticing more and more Valencians are coming to appreciate Rosado and in particular their own wines. It is especially noticeable that young Spanish people in general are turning “from Beer to Wine.” The trend in figures is showing a marked change. We have also seen it in the wine-fairs. Made from Monastrell, Bobal, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo,

Garnacha , Merlot, Syrah or Embolicaire (a native variety) or blends of some or several of them, we have yet to taste a bad Rosado from 2017 and we have already tried many! From Castellon province we have enjoyed wines from the cooperative at Vivers, the blend from Clos D’ Esgarracordes, Subarra’ s Cabernet Sauvignon and Victor Bellmunt at Ildum Vinarius. From Alicante Terreta from BOCOPA, (Monastrell) or the Merlot/ Monastrell from Finca Collado or from the Cooperative in Mañan, all produce wines from old vines in the Vinapoló area of the interior. DO Valencia has no shortage of good wines. From around Fontanars try the wine from Los Frailes, Daniel Belda, the Juan de Juanes from La Viña, and ‘Rosae’ from Casa de las Vides or the wines from

the Ontinyent cooperative. Also consider the vino de autor from Cent Piques. From around Valencia itself try the Soucasse family Rosado, made by El Portillo (Buñol), which is highly rated. Also look up the Turia Valley towards Titaguas where the wine from Polo Monleon is produced then two excellent wines from los Ahillas above Chelva, Vegamar’s multi-award winning Rosado from Calles, the wines from the El Villar cooperative in Villar d’Arzobispo. For us at VÍ vid, probably the best and most consistent rosados are from Bobal , the regional variety of Utiel-Requena. Just two weeks ago they held a special event at Veles and Vents to showcase the 2017 vintage…having had huge success with a similar event in Madrid. Around 150 people were invited to try wines from Vera de Estenas, Covilor, Latorrè, Coviñas, Murviedro, the Cooperative in Utiel, Valsangiacomos Flor de San Antonio, Dominio de la Vega, Nodus, Sierra Norte, Vicente Gandia, Chozas Carrascal, Iranzo and Ladron de Lunas.

Although we recommend and concentrate on Valencian wines, there are some other good Rosados from across Spain. A particular favourite is Nabal, from the Ribera del Duero, made by Mapi Melado Serrano, an exiled Valencian winemaker based in the centre of Spain. Without a doubt Rosado is at its best now, new vinification techniques are producing wonderful wines with huge fruity noses and great balancing acidity, fresh but with plenty of body and with fruit in the finish as well as a minerality from the soils which give balanced wines to satisfy every taste. Nor are the prices bad, wines vary in price according to the producers but anything from 2-7€ a bottle will give you a great wine experience! Rosado does not need to be expensive to be good! Equally you will find a huge range of colours in these wines from the traditional strawberry red, down through rose hues to salmon and the inevitable onion skin more typical of the Provençale roses

of Southern France. Taking some of the colour out does not imply a wishy-washy wine either. Two of the palest, the Vegamar and the Flor de San Antonio, are incredibly pale but had some of the most impressive flavours and depth in the mouth. Rosado always drinks well when fresh but some of these wines, notably the Latorre, Finca Collado and Clos d’Esgarracordes will still drink very well with two to three years in bottle. All in all, we believe you have no excuse not to try some Rosados this Spring and Summer. From this list you will be well satisfied with your purchases .We hope you have great fun experimenting! MARA ARANDA towns along the Iberian coast. This makes our genetic population a true melting pot of cultures. It is a proven fact that they mixed. For example, regarding the Muslim elites when they conquered parts of Spanish Peninsula in the 8th century, it is recorded that there were leaders that married within the elite of the already established Goths to increase their power. There have been various genetic studies amongst the population of the Peninsula and it has been determined that a good percentage of the population on the peninsula today has Muslim and Jewish blood. Time and again, it has been written that the Jews and Muslims were all expelled and that there was an extreme ethnic cleansing. However, more recent studies show that genetically this was not the case. People changed their surname and imitated the customs of the rest of the population until their past was finally diluted. Some people make the effort to really discover their ancestral lineage, like in my case, but that is another story and will probably be a book one day…

1. Tell us something about your musical background… My experiences in music are many and diverse, given that they have been accumulated over 30 years of a professional career in music. I believe that destiny has led me to share experiences with musicians with whom I have had an affinity, on both a personal and musical level. I am drawn to music with traditional roots and medieval music and also researching music and linking it to history and heritage. The results have materialized into something like thirty albums, including collaborations with other artists and solo albums in my own name too. These experiences have made me the woman that I am today, on and off stage. I have a sense of responsibility and duty towards the generations that will follow us, trying to involve and encourage them to respect tradition. Let us remember that the word tradition comes from the Latin words ‘traditio’ and ‘tradere’ that means entregar in Spanish or to deliver in English. We deliver each generation that comes after, with what we believe is truly worthy of being maintained over time. The teachers I work with share a large part of that responsibility. We make a real effort to preserve traditional instruments from our extensive collection, which number hundreds of musical instrumentos that are reconstructed from scrolls, manuscripts, stone carvings in facades of churches and cathedrals… 2. Where does your interest come from regarding the Sephardic history of Spain? It most probably comes from my extensive interest in History. I am interested in the coexistence of many different cultures including Iberians, Celts, Romans, Greeks, Carthaginians, Muslims and Visigoths during so many centuries in major

Can you explain to us a few of the eleven songs on the new album, ‘SEFARAD in the heart of Morocco’ All the songs have been researched by the awardwinning ethnomusicologist Susana Weich, for her work during more than 30 years ago on the Sephardic tradition and the Jewish diaspora. Dr. Jose Hinojosa Montalvo, Senior Lecturer of History at the University of Alicante, wrote the extremely informative booklet of almost 100 pages that accompanies the album. El marido carpintero According to Oro Anahory in the book ‘New Horizons in Sephardic Studies’ this song refers to the erect male sexual organ, unambiguously, leaving the song on the border between the polite and the brazen. La partida del esposo A traditional ballad. Much more known and covered is the one that was collected in the eastern part of the diaspora, adorned with an attractive melody. In this song, we can clearly see the influence of Arab scales in Sephardic music. Búcar sobre Valencia This romance presents a small part of the ‘Poema del Mío Cid’, describing the episode concerning the arrival in Valencia of Búcar ‘El Cid’ (from the dialect Arabic sīdi, 'lord'), the Castilian knight who conquered Valencia and established it as an independent kingdom in 1094. After his death in 1099, his wife Jimena Díaz succeeded him

and inherited the rule of Valencia until 1102, when it went back to Muslim rule. This all inspired the most important epic song of Spanish literature: the ‘Cantar del Mío Cid’, with 3,735 verses. La infantina We are dealing with a romance that appears in 1550, in the first ‘Songbook of Romance ballads’ that was printed in Antwerp. It has been passed down the generations in Portuguese, Catalan and also in Spanish. It is one of the few romances that reflects on the very ancient beliefs about the mysterious, feminine, magical properties of trees… Sol ‘la Sadiqa’ This narrates what happened in 1834, with the martyrdom of a Sephardic girl Sol Hachuel, in Fez, where she was beheaded for refusing to convert to Islam. She is considered a holy martyr of Judaism. Today it is a place of pilgrimage, in Tangier, respected by both Muslims and Jews. 4. What are your future plans? My immediate plans are to finish the second installment of the Serphadic Diaspora. This time it will be dedicated to Turkey, collaborating with the Turkish Sephardim. We will continue to dive into the deep roots of this tradition and to bring to light unpublished themes or

those that have been interpreted only sparingly. Currently there is a kind of ‘boom’ with respect to Sephardic music but all the groups play the same 50 songs, the most popular and that in some way guarantees “the success” of what they present. However, I must insist that they assume the responsibility of taking this a step further and remove the somewhat superficial layer of this tradition and understand that underneath there is a very large repertoire waiting to be rescued. If we are not careful, the wind will blow and the melodies & lyrics could disappear into dust if they are not preserved. Respect tradition and tradition respects you… Interview by Owl
