EL CAFETÍN This is one of the most legendary and open-minded café-bars of the Barrio del Carmen. It is also said to be the first one that turned the area from a no-go zone in the late ‘70s/early1980s to the highly popular & buzzing centro histórico of today. La Transición, as it was known, was a time of liberty and real change in Spain and ‘Cafetin’ has been an artistic hangout for bohemians, painters, writers, locals & visitors for many years. The interior has a chic ‘Cabaret 1930s’ style, which in Spanish translates as ‘Revista Musical’, reflecting that theatrical & progressive period in Spain’s past. Dig the violet walls and art exhibitions by local artists. There is a relaxing terraza outside with a beautiful view of the old centre, great for soaking up the sunshine with a newspaper & a beer and good for people watching too. Owner Juan is the kind & warm host who runs this famous café-bar day to day. He is well travelled and a talented fashion designer & pianist and he has crafted this place with care and detail. It is clear that he cares for his customers.

You can browse their ample menu for homemade cocktails in large glasses including Mojito, Piña Colado and Margarita for 6€. There are some excellent wines including ‘Arnum Gran Reserva’, which is served at 3.50€ a glass and these are served with traditional Valencian homemade ‘Rubio’ crisps. You will find red & white wines and cavas too. Check out their excellent ‘Agua de Valencia’ (vodka, champagne, natural orange juice, gin), which is Valencia’s world famous cocktail par excellence. We enjoyed a refreshing Gin’n’Tonic at the bar during our last visit and they have a fair range of ginebras, including Hendricks, Beefeater, Premium, Seagram’s and Valencian brand Gin Mare too. Yes, they do great sangria too!

Black, Green, White and Red tea choices and relaxing infusions like Rooibos Canela Naranja and Hibisco Egipto. You won’t go hungry here, as you can enjoy generous tapas, fresh from the Mercado Central, including Ham, Cheese, Anchovies choices (4€5€) with lovely bread that is ‘pan de pueblo’.

Coffee lovers should take note that they serve the excellent local café ‘Camillo’, meaning your experience here really is as Valencian as can be. 1. José, tell us a little about your experience in the world of music From 1999 to 2011, I ran ‘Discos Mardigras!’ in Valencia. Among other activities, I organized concerts of international artists of black music in different clubs of Valencia and as a DJ in many clubs including events throughout Spain. From 2014 to 2017, I had a space for the record shop inside the ‘Cracovia Bar’. In 2017, I opened ‘Splendini Bar i Discos’ with Jordi Belenguer.

2. What kind of music can we find and listen to in Splendini? You can find Afro-American music of the last 6 decades; Jazz, Soul, Blues, R & B, Hip-Hop, Funk, Brazil and Latin grooves. Also a little pop and rock.

3. Tell us about your monthly activities The activities we have are presentations of books and events and DJ sessions. 4. What kind of food and drink can you enjoy? VALENCIA WINES

VALENCIA WINES, CAVAS, VERMUTS, GINS… A SELECTION FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON One big advantage of living in the Valencian Community is the huge range of wonderful wines, cavas, ‘generosas’ and spirits produced here. There is very little need to go looking elsewhere for your favourite style of tipple. Ten years ago finding your choices could be difficult. Today, with the internet, many bodegas have online shops and there is a greater choice of specialist outlets with a good selection of home-grown Valencian products. In this article we identify some of our favourites and where to get them from. Xmas and New Year are traditionally times for starting the celebrations with sparkling wines. Bocopa in Alicante produce a range of sparkling wine from Moscatel and Monastrell. Under the ‘Marina Espumante’ label both are lightly sweet, a result of the natural sugars retained in the fermentation process. They are good respectively

as an aperitif or later in the meal and will set you back around 5€ a bottle. Reymos, the Cheste based bodega also have sparkling wine from Moscatel grown in the area. Reymos Brut and Reymos Familia are dryer in style and widely available. Vegamar recently introduced their ‘Ancestral’ wines, which we covered last month. In Castellon, try the Ancestral wines from Victor Bellmunt of Ildum Vinarius in Cabanes. Of course, Requena is the home of Cava produced in the community. The nine producers Pago de Tharsys, Dominio de la Vega, Hispano Suizas, Torre Oria, Coviñas, Murviedro, Chozas Carrascal, UVE and Vegalfaro produce a wide range of excellent cavas as many of you will have discovered at the fair in Mercado Colón at the end of November. All their wines are widely available in supermarkets and specialist shops, especially El Corte Inglés. Several are suitable for drinking throughout the meal as well.

One of our favourites is Adriano Brut, a cava from Bodegas Haya, available online with express delivery from around 11€. Fuller bodied, this is a cava to enjoy throughout the meal. As an alternative you could try one of the Valencian Vermuts. In particular, this year, we have enjoyed Vinados Cent Piques who produce a red and a white and the Bodegas Haya, which is full of spices appropriate for Xmas. Carmeleta have recently revised their range of white, rosado, orange and red vermuts. Turning to the starters the driest varieties are Tardana, Merseguera and Verdil. Together with dry Moscatels these wines are best served with fish and seafood. Sauvignon Blanc with its aromatic nose is good with salad and Asian plates whilst Macabeo and Chardonnay with their fuller body will cope with bigger flavours better. Try wines from the new Murviedro

ranges, Audentia in Valencia, Pugnus from Requena and Galeum from Alicante. Experiment with the new Mediterranean style wines, blending the driest varieties with the fuller bodied or aromatic varieties giving wines which are fresh and fuller bodied at the same time. Tardor from Jimenez-Vila is a blend of Tardana and Sauvignon Blanc, a really good new wine from Requena. Save oaked chardonnay for smoked salmon, the classic marriage (Finca Collado Blanco, Nodus and Vera de Estenas are all highly recommended.) The main red varieties for main courses are Bobal, Monastrell, Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. If you are not a fan of oaky flavoured wine then try some of the new wines with time in terracotta, which is the way they were traditionally made. Celler del Roure in Moixent and Vera de Estenas and Vegalfaro from Requena are the bodegas we have covered in articles earlier in the year. If you do like oaky wine then we still

recommend the classic Venta del Puerto 12 and 18 from Anecoops’ La Viña bodega. For desserts, Alicante and Valencia produce a huge range of sweet wines from Moscatel. Lesser known are the ‘vi negres’, or red wines produced from overripe and late harvested grapes such as Bodegas Xaló from the Giró variety. At around 6€ a bottle, this is liquid heaven and great with cheese also. Also very good are the Bodegas Fuso semidulce from Bobal and Pepe Mendoza’s Monastrell. These sweet reds are an absolute treasure but sadly little known. Nine bodegas in Alicante produce a wine called Fondillón, a wine favoured by crowned heads across Europe in the 18th century. The wines are neither Port nor sherry style in that they are not fortified with brandy. They are naturally fermented and then aged in large old oak barrels. The best are from Primitivo Quiles and Culebrón and Algueña, Santa Catalina del Maña, Alejandro and Bocopa are all excellent. Perfect with cheeses the wines are complex, rich, full of nut flavours, dried fruit and figs.

Post-meals, Gin and tonic remains the favourite cocktail and Valencia has become a centre for the production of Artisan gins. We reported earlier in the year on the launch of Valencia City and London City gins from Vegamar. Available through their shop on Colón at 25€ a bottle, these currently remain our favourites. Whatever you drink over the coming period, we hope you enjoy our recommendations. We will return in February 2019 hopefully with news of newly released 2018 wines.

TASCA EL BOTIJO Are you looking to savour quality tapas in an authentic Spanish tasca in the historic centre at any time of the day? It’s in the heart of the Barrio del Carmen, so easy to find. The interior is warm with an attractive local art exhibition lining the brick walls, clean wooden tables and a sociable, cosy atmosphere. There’s an ample terraza outside with a pleasant view of the old town and very little traffic, as it is conveniently off the main streets... Their 28 superb tapas include sardines, hummus, anchovies, tortilla & the classic Valencian ‘torn fish’ speciality of Esgarraet. It is a delicious mixture of cod, red peppers and olive oil and was tasty as it was attractive to the eye. We rate their Ensaladilla Rusa (Russian salad) as one of the best in the city, combining just the right amount

of peas, carrots and not too much mayonnaise… There are Eight classic Spanish ‘Tablas’ include five delicious cheeses & a fair range of Ibéricos. There’s a select red wine list with top-of-the range ‘Ribera Del Duero’ and ‘Riojas’ to savour as well as local reds, whites, rosés and cavas for group celebrations. We savoured the tasty cheeses with the Valencian red wine flowing into the early hours… The service was informed, friendly and natural. The portions were neither tiny or excessive; they were just the right amount. The calidad and presentation makes it very much a Tasca that is well worth experiencing in good company.

MAGHREBI TEA As you race around for Christmas or recover from New Year partying, this month we are not going to tempt you to more over-indulgence but instead direct you to a refreshing cup of tea! Yes, I am English! However, this brew is akin to the three Kings and their gifts do come from the East. It combines Chinese Gunpowder green tea, fresh spearmint leaves and is sweetened with sugar to keep you on that high energy! Maghrebi Tea or Moroccan tea or Té Moruno, as with all tea drinking, is a communal affair that warms the heart and lightens the spirit. The cleansing and digestive qualities of peppermint on the stomach after a heavy meal are effects that we have all experienced and need no proof. It also freshens the breath as well as the head. If you are against sugar, replace with either stevia or agave or reduce the amount to your likening. Green tea, the other main ingredient, has a string of health claims around it… most of which are unproven. However, indisputably, both spearmint and green tea are powerful antioxidants and the more of those around, the merrier at Christmas time! What is beautiful and important, as with all tea-making, is the ritual and bringing people together. In Arabic, Maghrebi means “where and when the sun sets.” The region includes Algeria, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia, which is part of both Africa and the Arab world. The tea is served throughout the day in Northern Africa to welcome visitors to the home. As the Maghrebi proverb goes; “The first glass is as gentle as life, the second is as strong as love, the third is as bitter as death.” So, let’s keep ours sweet!

How to make Maghrebi Tea You will need a metal teapot that you can place on the stove and it is more decorative to have small glass ‘Moroccan style’ tea glasses.

Method Place the gunpowder tea with a glass of the boiled water. Let the tea simmer for a minute and pour out the water back into the glass. This will be a clear amber colour and is known as the soul of the tea so don’t discard it as it will be recombined later. Next, pour another cup into the tea leaves. This time, swirl them around a bit to rinse the leaves, washing them. Pour out this water, which will be slightly cloudy and discard it. Next take the fresh mint, sugar and the first cup of tea essence and add to the green tea. Fill the teapot with the remaining boiled water and let it gently

simmer over medium-low heat until it comes to a boil. It’s important to let the tea slowly come to a boil to enable the gunpowder tea and fresh mint to steep properly. If you use a Moroccan teapot, you will see steam coming from the teapot when it’s boiling and the green tea leaves float to the top. When it comes to a boil carefully open the teapot and, with a large spoon, stir the tea to make sure that the sugar is well dissolved. Serve hot. If using a stovetop kettle, strain the tea to keep the tea leaves inside the pot when pouring into each glass.

TO ATTACK OR DEFEND... THAT IS THE QUESTION Football tactics are discussed across the world on a daily basis by fans of all persuasions and one of the most popular debates is: Do you build your team around attack or defence? Quite clearly, Marcelino currently believes in the latter. His Valencia team have the second best defensive record in La Liga this season and have looked solid in every game to date. Unfortunately, that has come at a cost as the forward line continue to fire blanks and hold the unenviable record of having the worst goals tally amongst all twenty league clubs. During the successful campaign last year, Valencia were scoring goals for fun but lost points on a regular basis by giving away silly goals at crucial times. Rodrigo, Zaza and Santi Mina all reached double figures and the trio of Parejo, Kondogbia and Guedes added sixteen between them. Currently, the top scorers in La Liga are Santi Mina and Kevin Gameiro with two goals each. Parejo does have two goals to his name as well (both penalties) but has failed to find the target from open play despite the numerous dangerous free kicks he has been given the

responsibility to take by Marcelino. Kondogbia and Guedes have yet to score this season, despite frequently starting matches. Zaza’s like-for-like replacement Batshuayi has struggled to hold down a first team place and consequently has scored very few goals. Finally, Rodrigo has been the biggest disappointment of all, having not scored in the league since the opening game of the season against Atlético Madrid. The manager’s decision to sacrifice the attacking flair of last year in order to shore up the defence is understandable to a point. It was obvious that this needed to happen if Valencia were to challenge for trophies in their centennial year but the balance of the team has been lost as a result. Consequently, the performances have been unattractive and fragmented at times, leading to increasing frustration among fans at the manager’s tactics. If Valencia can somehow fuse the attacking prowess of last season with their stoical defensive approach of this temporada, then they will be onto a winner. Both will be required to succeed. The game against Getafe

was a case in point. Sloppy defensive errors ensured Valencia lost both games against the team from the outskirts of Madrid in the previous campaign. This season’s match was exactly the type of contest Marcelino’s stingy defence was created for. The match itself was decided by a single goal with the aid of VAR (Video Assistant Referee). Basque referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea missed the foul by Bruno González on Gameiro, late in the game, and VAR brought his attention to it. As a result of the review, Bruno was dismissed and Parejo converted the penalty to give Los Che maximum points for only the second time this season! Valencia followed that up with arguably their best performance to date with a 3-0 drubbing of a poor Rayo Vallecano team. For the first time in a while, the forwards did shine and a Santi Mina brace and Kevin Gameiro effort handed Los Che their first league victory at the Mestalla. At last, both attack and defence had delivered in a match and met the goals set by Valencia’s demanding fans for every game.

Italy beckoned next and the small matter of a match up with Ronaldo and Juventus. Valencia knew that if they were to remain in the Champions league for the knockout stages, they would in all likelihood need at least a point from the Allianz Stadium in Turin. The match was littered with subtle comparables. Neto had played 11 games for the “Old Lady” in the past and João Cancelo had enjoyed several seasons at Valencia. Blaise Matuidi had been teammates with Guedes and Gameiro at Paris SaintGermain. Ronaldo had shared the same dressing room with Chéryshev and Garay when at Real Madrid. Several players have played in both the Spanish and Italian leagues at various times in their career and many of the players hailed from the same country and had shared international duties together. Scottish referee William Collum took charge of the match, which Juventus dominated in the first period. However, it was Valencia who had the best chance of the half when Diakhaby’s effort was saved by the former Arsenal stopper Wojciech Szczęsny

on the stroke of the interval. The Italians did take the lead just shy of the hour mark. Croatian international Mario Mandžukić tapped home from close range after great work by Ronaldo on the flank. As the game entered the final third, Valencia got more adventurous but failed to find that elusive goal that would have given them a share of the spoils. To compound their misery, Manchester United scored an illegal injury time winner against Young Boys to confirm the Spanish club’s fears that they would not be progressing beyond the group stage of the Champions League. However, the Swiss club’s defeat in England did mean that Valencia would still be guaranteed European Football in the New Year and they will now enter the last 32 of the Europa League competition, courtesy of their third place finish in Group H. The draw takes place on December 17th. Valencia flew back from Italy in midweek knowing they faced another tough challenge next with Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

Los Merengues had also been in Champions League action in Italy at the same time as Los Che but had emerged victorious from their visit with a 2-0 win over A.S. Roma. Despite this positive result, all is not well in the Real camp and they still seem to be struggling to replace Ronaldo on the pitch. Also, the experiment with Lopetegui as first team coach failed miserably. The former Argentinean international, Santiago Solari, has now taken over and been given the task of trying to emulate the recent achievements of Zinedine Zidane. A recent defeat at unfashionable Eibar has already put Solari on the back foot with some of the Real Madrid fan base. Taking over from their worst start to a league campaign since 2002 will give him very little breathing space with the club’s hierarchy, who are notorious for their impatience. Coming into the Madrid match, Valencia had not conceded a league goal in four away games.However, inside the first ten minutes they were a goal down after Daniel Wass inadvertently directed an effort from

Whatever Marcelino said to his players at the interval worked because the visitors came out a very different proposition. Three glorious chances to level the game were spurned by Santi Mina, Gabriel and Batshuayi, as Valencia once again highlighted their inability to score. Their wastefulness in front of goal was then capitalized on by Real, who killed off the match against the run of play, with a counterattack that was clinically finished off by Lucas Vazquez late in the game. A game of two halves that sums up Valencia’s season to date in a nutshell. An impotent attack force, lacking confidence or authority, letting down a stubborn & miserly defence that is keeping opponents at bay for long periods of play. With the January

transfer window looming, the club have a chance to bring in a proven goal scorer to rectify the problem. Until they do that, they will continue to struggle to climb the La Liga table. Levante UD, meanwhile, continue to punch above their weight and keep everyone associated with the club happy. They entertain Barcelona in

mid-December and fans will be hoping for a repeat of last season’s fixture that the ‘Granotas’’ won by five goals to four.

HAIKU WITH DANNY BLACKWELL

Tell us something about your background and upbringing… I was brought up in Yorkshire, in the North of England. I have a degree in Music and a Masters in Literature. My final thesis was on Rayuela by Julio Cortázar. Apart from Spain, I’ve lived in Japan, Argentina, Portugal and Mexico. Oh, and I used to be a mariachi musician. You have travelled far and wide. What did you most learn from each country that you lived in? In Japan, I learned that it’s better to beg forgiveness than ask permission and that Hello Kitty weighs the same as 3 apples. In Mexico, I learnt: No es importante ser mariachi sino parecer mariachi. In Argentina, I learnt never to swish the bombilla around in the mate gourd. And in Portugal I learnt to distinguish between a custard tart (pastel de Belem) and a custard tart (nata).

How do you find Valencia as place to live and work and create? Valencia has always been good to me and I really love her. That said, it doesn’t always have the best working conditions. So, I think a recipe for success in this city is to have low expectations and a big dose of imagination. There’s a real bohemian element to the city and there’s lots of interesting cultural movements, including some interesting anarchist initiatives, and I feel really proud to be a part of Valencia. The city has also inspired a lot of my writing, both fiction and non-fiction.

Describe your new book on haiku The book is a bilingual anthology of haiku poems written in the languages of the Iberian Peninsula (Basque, Catalan, Galician, Portuguese and Spanish) with all the poems translated into English. The book includes some poems by Valencian poets. I was

awarded a ‘Cultura Resident’ grant for the project by the Valencian Museums Consortium. My hope is to make a lot of lesser-known poems and poets available to the English-speaking world. Also, I want to re-evaluate more well-known haiku in Spanish that has been dogged with lots of unfair prejudice by critics over the years. My knowledge of Japanese language and culture, coupled with a love of Iberoamerican literature, puts me in a privileged position to produce a book the likes of which has never been seen before. Essentially, my goal was to make the book I would have loved to have read but that no one had written yet. I’ll be presenting the book in the ‘Centre del Carme Cultura Contemporània’ in C/Museo on the 5th of December, at 19.00h. I’d like to make some more books, maybe translate some more underinvestigated poetry into English and also to continue to get my own haiku published. VALENCIAN CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR The “Todo a un Euro” shops have been stocking tinsel and blow-up Santas for months. Dean Martin is blasting out of the speakers at El Corte Ingles. It’s 20 degrees outside. It must be Christmas time in Valencia, a time for peace on Earth (enjoy it while you can, it’s going to be a Trump of a New Year), goodwill to all men, five-o’clock-on-aWednesday work ‘Christmas do’ Gin and Tonics, big TVs from Media Markt and remembering relatives (and local politicians) who’ve passed away and trying as much as possible to avoid the living ones. When football teams in Spain have a bad start to the season there is speculation whether the manager will get to “eat his Turrón” at the club or be sacked before New Year. For years, two towns in the community had the Christmas sweet market sewn up. Alicante made “el blando”; a soft dry almondy sweet moulded into a bar, while from Xixona came “el duro”, a hard & dry almondy sweet moulded into a bar. The third option in this grand array of Christmas delights was polvorones, a powdery-dry almond sweet moulded into an oval shape. Polvorones are only eaten at one

time of the year. The reason for this will become immediately obvious if you ever try one. When your entire Christmas hamper has long been finished off, that box of polvorones (and there always is one) will still remain. After centuries of dry almondy sweets, the Valencians finally realised that a bit of variety was needed. Not wishing to surrender sovereign tradition, the solution was to take what at any other time would simply be called “a bar of chocolate”, and rename it turrón just for the Christmas period. Genius! Nowadays, bars of chocolate turrón easily outnumber the traditional stuff on any supermarket shelf. They come in any number of traditional Valencian flavours, such as kiwi fruit, Irish coffee and rum & raisin. These new innovations haven’t stopped at chocolate. This year, Valencian sweet makers have gone all Willy Wonka on us. Amongst the newer innovations at the Casinos “Turrón and Christmas Sweets Trade Fair” include Gin & Tonic flavour Turrónes, Turrónes in the shape and

colours of the Valencian and Rainbow flags, Whatsapp emoticon Turrónes and last but not least the gloriously Un-Christmassy Kebab Turrón, which you can cut as if it were a spit-roasted blob of donner meat. Lovely! Traditionally, every Spanish home is decorated at this time of the year with a nativity scene complete with models of Mary, Joseph, the baby and perhaps some of the other characters from the Christmas story. Belén building is one Spanish construction industry that is definitely not in desperate decline. There’s a weird attraction towards building mini-worlds and this is a fun form of ecclesiastical lego. Belenes are getting bigger and more spectacular by the year. What started off as adding a lump of moss-covered bark to add a bit of “atmosphere” has got completely out of hand. Just look around the Christmas markets (and of course Todo a un Euro) to see what bits of your Belen are a must this year. Now you can have an entire Little Town of Bethlehem on your dining room table complete with moving parts, villagers and their houses, a lake and a fully functioning Roman era saw mill.

If it’s big you want, the Cathedral takes the lead with a Belén with life-size models of the holy family, while the Basilica de San Vicente Ferrer has a Belén with over 300 figures, which is about the entire estimated population of Bethlehem at the time. The dutifully sedate, traditional Belén, however, now has to fight for space with the bauble-strewn Northern European Christmas tree, the Mexican poinsettia plant, the holly branches and the plastic Father Christmas climbing up the balcony. In some cases, traditions have merged. Thus you get mutant crib scenes of cattle and shepherds nestling among tinsel, fairy lights and snow. On the other hand, the caganer (the figure of a man having a crap which, believe it or not, is traditional in Catalonian crib scenes) is now quite often found squatting behind the Christmas tree (at least I think that’s what it was I saw). In Spain, presents are brought by the Three Kings on January 6. You’d think

that would be enough – but not for the festively-frenzied Valencians. In the last decade or so, Father Christmas has appeared on the scene. With his white beard and red suit he looks like the “traditional” Coca-Cola version, but for some reason he bears the French name ‘Papa Noel’. Far from having to fight it out with the Kings for his status in the hearts of Spanish children, he’s been neatly incorporated into the whole tradition. Just like George Martin was the fifth Beatle, Father Christmas is a bit like the fourth King. It’s just that he comes a little bit earlier, conveyed by reindeer instead of camels. The big winners, of course, are the kids. Not only do they get loads of toys at Epiphany, they also get showered with goodies on Christmas day. The Three Kings themselves, Baltasar, Melchor and Gaspar (as they were named about 1000 years after they were supposed to have existed) arrive in Valencia by boat at the Marina Juan Carlos I and finish up at the Plaza

del Ayuntamiento, where the kings are raised up on a fireman’s ladder and enter the town hall through the balcony. And how are we going to pay for all this? There’s always the lottery. The buying of Christmas lottery tickets is an obligation here. No Spanish person can say no when offered a ticket or will take no for an answer when trying to sell you one. This is purely to avoid being that sad person who always appears on TV after the lottery draw; the only one in the block who didn’t buy a share in the winning ticket. They are usually filmed claiming fiercely “I’m happy because I am healthy”. So, this day is called too “el día de la salud”. Wherever you are during the festive season, make sure you enjoy it as enthusiastically as the Valencians do. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

1. Tell us something about your upbringing and musical background… I was born into a musical family and my dad has always been a serious jazz fan. So jazz was the first thing I heard and funk too, being born in 1975. I took up the clarinet aged 14 then the Sax. That was in Blackpool where there was virtually no jazz scene. However, I fell in love with jazz. I didn’t know what else to do, so i memorized the Charlie Parker ‘Omnibook’ in Eb and Bb and did the grade exams; it was either that or drugs/alcohol like everyone else my age at the time…it got me off the streets. I skipped A-levels, became a monk doing around 6/8 hours practice a day and got into to Music College at 17, passing with distinction. Then at 20 I did my final year at the Guildhall in London. That for me was my Olympic gold medal. London then was like heaven. I was propelled into the jazz scene professionally, under the wings of great aspiring stalwarts of the music and other established names. At 25 I became a Professor at Trinity College of Music. The rest is history and I got to play with all the greats I grew up listening to. 2. What is jazz for you? Jazz is love because music is love.

It’s that simple; personal growth/ self-discipline/lateral thinking/neverending/ awe-inspiring compelling inspiration, a universal language. It’s home to me wherever you are in the world. The politics, the corruption, the hardships, the education is another matter. At the core of jazz is love/God for me; the expression of the silent voice found in the heart - the spirit of the universe exploring a human experience. But it’s a genre of music which encompasses many other genres with mostly the notion; I dare you! So, it allows one to adapt to whatever the musical situation. 3. How does living and working in Spain compare to England? So far I can only really speak of my experience of Spain being mostly in Valencia. The first thing that hit me was the audience. People love music here, it’s a cultural paradise, there’s an audience and they actually listen, appreciate you and clap! Valencia is also a melting pot of world cultures too. Musically, much of what’s happening around this embracing city is the result of this fusion from around the world and it is unique with such adversity! I must say there’s a very high level particularly around a Valencian

organisation called ‘Sedajazz’ (an independent jazz college). The teachers there are doing everything right. The students going through them are so wonderfully supported by the city too. In comparison to Berklee, with all its power, money, American marketing etc; it’s so wonderful to see something native of Valencia that so gracefully holds the flag… just proving that money can’t buy everything. And this is thanks to the ‘hearts and no bullshit’ great players who help these young students. Musicians like Santi Navalón, Jesus Santandreu, Latino Blanco to name but a few are heroes to this city. It’s also great for me as their level is similar to the level I worked with in London; they’re great musicians because of their hearts!

6. Could you take us through each track on your latest album, ‘Trip Bop’ Trip-Bop is written as an opening piece for the energy of this ensemble, our influences and with space to evolve within the music. Punk Kid, originally written in New York and recorded for previous album Plastic City, I rearranged to have a Miles Davis ‘80s’ feel to it.

Tutu and Backyard Ritual; two tracks from the Miles’ album ‘Tutu’. I've loved this ever since it was released in 1986 and it’s my homage to Miles. Blue Blood is a filthy slow rock blues inspired by many Wednesday nights jamming down the Black Note, which has been like a second home and school for me. Indigo is written for my partner Ellen, a spirited and adventurous piece much reflecting her and the influence she’s had upon me to dare greater. Harmonically complicated and full of surprises!

5. Tell us about the other musicians who feature on the album… It took me a year and a half to find the right balance of musicians/ temperaments. A band leader is a catalyst, an arranger, the music I write is for these energies/spirits combined. Valencian pianist Santi Navalón is truly a great musician with a deep knowledge of harmony, composition, jazz and rock; we both have the same passion for all of this. Peter Connolly, a rock/ pop influenced singer and guitarist with a unique voice and beautiful feel on guitar, so mature for his age. Also with a hunger and openness to constantly learn and explore. I believe in him so much it’s great to give him a compositional vehicle to practice this. From Colombia, Ricardo Osorno has a South American feel to grooving on the bass. Likewise, he has openness

to learning and practicing on the stage through the music with the freedom to dare to try things, 100% committed to every single note. Drummer André Walker from USA, a great feel, ears like a hawk, a musician who plays the drums. He is someone open to dare to explore. All of these musicians have a depth of history in their approach from their individual study, are 100% committed to every single note and are professional, punctual, studious, ambitious, open-minded, very serious, meaning they don’t turn up to gigs or rehearsals drunk or high - I got no time for that. I rehearse them with nothing less than how I've been taught in London/NY from masters I learnt from. To expect the highest results, is to keep everyone challenged, motivated and appreciated. 6. It has been said that trumpets are triumphant. What makes the sound of a saxophone so distinctive? What makes the sound of the saxophone isn’t the saxophone but how one can manipulate the medium of the saxophone to express a desired sound. Technique is the ability to express a desired sound. The instrument is a tool to the art but not the art in itself. The art is the self; the person, whereas the instrument is a piece of metal. You make the sound. What distinguishes the saxophone is the psychology toward it and that’s the difference between a musician or just an instrumentalist. A musician uses any medium to explore, create and

demand one’s own expression that comes from within the silence voice of the heart. It’s NEVER the instrument but the individual. 7. Do you have any plans for 2019? Yeah, for 2019 I aim to use this group ‘Trip-Bop’ as a medium, an instrument, to explore, create and demand but collectively among its personnel, to grow and enjoy playing and composing. Any opportunities to perform more venues, festivals I’m looking into and will greatly welcome. Other than that, I’m looking to re-establish myself as a teacher somewhere again; I’m currently looking for this. Also, I’m still learning this beautiful Latin language and culture and would love to explore the county more too. It’s been tough leaving England behind and adapting in many ways but I’ve been open and humble to that. So, I’ve grown and I’m learning every day. But, like a band, it’s the people that make something come alive and joyful. I’m so grateful to all the wonderful people I’ve crossed paths with and those who are yet to come. Brexit broke my heart. I foresaw the repercussions it would have on the Arts & Education. But as in music or jazz, it’s what you optimistically do with a situation in a moment of time that bears fruit.
