KINGCAN DOG DAYCARE CENTRE

KINGCAN DOG DAYCARE

What is Kingcan?

KINGCAN is a DAYCARE for DOGS and a canine hairdresser in the centre of Valencia, which includes a dog groomer and trainer. We do not have cages and we have plenty of space. We offer a discount in hairdressing to all our daycare customers.

the whole day. The activities of each one varies according to the time they are with us. Our expert hairdresser, Marisa, works in the beauty space for our pets so our clients collect clean & healthy dogs. We are specialists in ‘hand-stripping’, which is the type of grooming method used to remove excess hair from the coats of dogs.

Our motto is: “NO DOG SHOULD SPEND MOST OF THE DAY ON THEIR OWN.”

Any anecdotes?

We are a specialist centre where you can leave your dog when you go to work or on holiday. The daycare service offers continuous attention by professionals, with play spaces for the dogs and walks in green areas.

We have a little one-year-old Teckel called Ron who has been coming to the nursery since he was 4 months old. He likes to be with us so much that he never wants to go. Ron is super simpático and playful.

Do dogs understand humans What is a typical day in King- better than what we think? Yes, they do. They understand when can? We adapt to the schedules of our clients. We start receiving the dogs from the first hour of the morning that we open; as soon as their owners leave we play with the dogs. The dogs then rest and later we start with the walks through the gardens & parks of the area. We return to the nursery and there they rest and then they eat. Some dogs stay half a day and others

we are sad or angry; they understand words and also the tones of our voices. They are excellent companions when they are raised well and loved.

Can you explain your rates & discounts? We have varied prices depending on the needs of customers.

WHOLE DAY (8 hours):15€ HALF DAY (4 hours):8 € SINGLE HOURS: 2.50€ per hour 24 HOURS: 17€ Our prices for days are reduced after 7 days, and also vary according to the breed and behaviour of the dog. We offer a free chat at our canine education consultation centre and personalized rates for each client. Valencia in November makes for topsy-turvy weather. When it rains in Valencia, it tends to pour. Unlike Galicia, it has been observed that some plans go out the window once it starts to rain around here. However, Valencia always seems to bounce back… knowing full well that the bad weather is only temporary in this privileged part of the Mediterranean. ¡Levante Feliz!

LA CABINA 2018 THIS MAGNIFICENT CAKE!

THE MAN-WOMAN CASE

LA CABINA / Valencia International Medium Length Film Festival takes its name from the Antonio Mercero film ‘La Cabina’ (1973), winner of an Emmy Award, starring José Luis López Vázquez. This is a now legendary film whose duration is 34 minutes, which is just the right time to truly develop a terrifying story… At the LA CABINA festival we firmly believe in the value of medium-length films, whose length ranges from 30 to 60 minutes, a format that has barely found a place in the usual circuits because it is halfway between the short and the full-length film. As a pioneer of this type of festival in Spain, La Cabina has consolidated Valencia as the international headquarters for films of that duration. LA CABINA has seen important filmmakers and high-level works that have made the Festival become the only international festival in the world that supports, defends and promotes both the medium-length film and its creators... In addition, many of the medium-length films that have passed through our Official Section

have received important international awards at prestigious festivals. With Sara Mansanet as Director of the festival, maintaining its identity, LA CABINA celebrates its eleventh anniversary, demonstrating its consolidation as a medium-length festival and making Valencia the international headquarters of the cinema of this format. Proof of this is the large number of films received (512), of which 16 from 13 different countries have been selected for its Official Section: Russia, France, China, Moldova, South Korea, United States, Germany, Great Britain, Spain, Norway, Netherlands, Portugal and Belgium. The members of the jury, made up of professionals from the world of cinema and culture, will choose the awards of the different categories: Best medium-length film, director, script, main interpretation, cast interpretation, art direction, production design, photography and music. The screenings will start on Thursday 15th November and, for 10 days, the

best cinema of between 30 and 60 minutes will flood the city. Just some of the highlights of this edition are:

-CROSS, a drama set in the world of motocross, starring Damien Bonnard,

-THIS MAGNIFICENT CAKE! is

an animated anthology about African colonization at the end of the 19th century. It was selected at the Cannes Film Festival 2018.

-THE MAN-WOMAN CASE, an

animated webseries awarded the Jury Prize at the Annecy Festival that tells the true story of Eugene Falleni, a transgender convicted of murdering his wife in Australia in the 1920s.

Denouncing the harassment of the LGBTQIA community, the PINK PILL movie is based on a real story that surprised Chinese netizens, that of a girl who was harassed in a high school for being a lesbian. She was forced

to take aphrodisiac drugs to “correct” her sexuality. The director Xie Xiaoshan shows the intransigence of the Chinese community regarding homosexuality. Director Lander Camarero returns in 2018 with the award-winning medium-length film ‘NUESTRO VIEJO (Y EL MAR)’. The film is about family quarrels. The action musical ‘HARD WAY’ is pure guilty pleasure, with aspirations for a cult movie in the line of The Rocky Horror Picture Show for its queer mood and its mixture of genres without complexes…

VALENCIA WINES

NEW ‘ANCESTRAL’ SPARKLING WINES FROM VEGAMAR & MORE Bodega’s Vegamar, the bodega based in Calles in the Valencia region, has just introduced two new “sparkling” wines made by the ‘Ancestral’ method, the first to be registered as such by DO Valencia. Understanding the world of sparkling wines is complex and there are many different ways of achieving the bubbles in your bottle! Cava, Champagne and English ‘Traditional Method’ are all essentially the same. Only wines from Champagne can be called after the region. Cava from Spain is made in a handful of defined geographical regions, including Requena to the west of Valencia…even if Cataluña is better known. In the UK, wines by the same method are now winning international competitions and beating the French at their own game. They are using the same grapes, originally from the Champagne district. They are grown on the same oyster-based / chalky soils, which dive under the channel, reemerging in Sussex.

The Beginnings of Sparkling Wine Ironically, ‘Champagne’ was initially an error. After the harvest, the wines were fermented and bottled. However, the wines would re-ferment in the bottles regularly causing explosions. In those without sufficient pressure, it would produce cloudy wines as the yeasts were stirred up when the bottles were opened. Although some sections of French society liked these wines, others did not. It wasn’t just the Champenoise having the problem! It was common in England too where, during medieval times, the monasteries had extensive vineyards as far north as York. The problem was caused by the very cold weather in autumn and winter, stopping the fermentation before it had naturally completed the process. In spring, the warmer weather restarted the whole fermentation process with devastating effects. Englishman Christopher Merret (161595) identified the problem. He worked out the subsequent way to fully

ferment the wine first before adding sugar and yeast to the wine in bottle to provoke the second fermentation. It was explained in a paper to the Royal Society in 1662. Moreover, the heavy glass bottles capable of standing up to the pressure of the wine were invented by Robert Mansell. They were for a long time called ‘Verre Anglais’ by the French. Some 35 years later, in 1697, Dom Pérignon was called to Hautvillers which is known as “the cradle of Champagne.” By this time the English had long been using the method for production of sparkling wines and ‘Perry’ (Pear wine). Dom Pérignon can claim credit for the blending of varieties however.

Vegamar’s Ancestral Method. Pablo Ossorio and Maripaz Quilez Porter at Vegamar (Director and winemaker respectively) have cleverly taken this historical anomaly and

11

RIKI WIGLEY & MARIAN DARÁS OF VÍ VID

turned it into a vinous virtue with the two new wines. A white from Merseguera (the local white variety) and a rosado from Merlot are individually fermented until the sugar level is reduced to 18gm per litre. Then, in an imitation of the historical method, the fermentation is deliberately stopped early… leaving a wine with a higher natural sugar level. The wine is bottled and only yeast added and a second fermentation takes place in bottle, using the natural sugars in the wine. When this has finished, with four months contact with the dead yeasts, the wine is disgorged before being placed on the market. The white is yellow in colour with intense green flashes. On the nose it is intense with fresh fruit, citrus note, crystallised orange over a light floral base. Creamy on entry, the bubbles are well integrated, fruity with a good balancing acidity. This is a wine capable of accompanying all stages of a meal.

The rosado is a subtle pale red, salmon colour. The nose is initially floral (violet) and then red fruits with citrus notes. Refreshing creamy mousse on entry, red fruit flavours with a good balancing acidity and a long easy finish. Our tasting group liked both and the wines are both available from Vegamar Selección on C/Colón in Valencia, near the metro station. (Approx 10€).

Vinya Alfori Monastrell (Fontanars) 2017 from DO Valencia is the first release (with a Macabeo) from this new bodega. With 14-month crianza some of it in large oak vats, it is a deep red cherry colour. On the nose red mature fruits, jam. Well balanced in the mouth, fruity with gentle balsamic notes from the crianza. Around 9.5€ and highly recommended.

Riki Wigley & Marian Darás of VÍ Vid Other New Releases

Sant Pere Vinyes Velles 2017 from the cooperative in Moixent (DO Valencia) is a blend of 70% Pedro Ximénez with 10% each of Malvasía and Macabeo. The Pedro Ximénez has 3 months in oak and is yellow in colour with a subtle nose, complex with dried fruit such a fig, hazelnuts and almonds. In the mouth dry with a complex long finish. (Around 6.5€)

VÍ Vid is a project supporting the development of wine knowledge and gastronomy in the Valencian Community. We run wine clubs, give tastings of Valencian wines in English and support wine-maker and bodega directly. We can be found in Instagram (Vivid8402), and through our blog VÍ Vid at vvidblog.wordpress. com, in Facebook, (www.facebook. comVivideventos) and in Twitter @ vividvinos. Our Valencia Wine Nights tastings in Valencia will start again at the end of October after a hectic summer. Article © 2018 24/ 7 Valencia

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH TAPAS BAR OF THE MONTH EL ARENAL

BOATELLA

It is undeniable that ‘BOATELLA TAPAS’ is an essential part of the Valencia Tapas scene. Unpretentious and welcoming, what you see is what you get. Founded in 1990, this Tapas Bar has become somewhat legendary for serving loyal locals and happy visitors at the more intimate bar and also on the impressive terrace. There is also an adjoining interior space to keep customers warm in the winter months… Outside, there is view of the Mercado Central that is impressive. The tapas are Mediterranean and Spanish and one of their specialties is fried prawns. Enjoy grilled cuttlefish, Galician mussels, cod croquettes, anchovies in vinegar, Patatas Bravas, Russian salad, grilled squid and more with your beer or wine as you watch the people go by. The famous flamenco singer Enrique Morente would often pop by incognito to ‘Boatella’ for tapas when he was in town whilst on tour. You can’t get more Spanish a recommendation than that!

FOOD BY HELEN WESTWATER OF LA OLA FRESCA

PIMPAM PUMPKIN TART What to do with the one that got away?! If you, like me, have managed to save some pumpkins from the great Halloween carve up massacre… here are some ideas in which you can put them to their greater worth. There are a wide range of pumpkins that belong to the same family of squashes. Choose from the more sweet and earthy butternut squash to the more fibrous (and darker) round pumpkin, and many others that come in a variety of colours and flavours. Use them roasted for purées to intensify the sweetness or boiled for desserts and soups. A legendary American Forefathers Folk song ‘New England’s Annoyances’ has a stanza: “We have pumpkins at morning and pumpkins at noon; If it was not for pumpkins we should be undone!”, and quite so. They are bursting with beta-Carotene that converts to vitamin A. Good for eyes, bones and your heart. Contain minerals such as calcium and magnesium, Vitamins E, C and B and have a high density and low calorie count so eat them to your heart’s content. This month’s recipe ‘PimPam Pumpkin Tart’, dresses up in all the autumnal colours and is served with tahini, yoghurt, lemon dressing.

Method First heat the oven to 200C Cut the pumpkin into pieces about 1 to 1.5inches / 2.5 to 3cm thick. Roast in heated oven for approximately 40 minutes or until pumpkin is soft. Place in a baking tray lightly sprinkled with olive oil. Season with sea salt. Slice the onions to a medium thickness. Heat a frying pan with 2 tablespoons olive oil. Gently fry till translucent. Add garlic, chilli flakes and dried thyme. Cook for a further 5 minutes. Toast the pumpkin seeds with the cumin seeds and leave to one side. Place the puff pastry on a baking sheet. Spread your onion mixture over the puff pastry. Next take your pumpkin out of the oven. Remove the skin. Place the segments intermittently over the onions. Place in the oven and

cook for around 15/20 minutes. While your ‘PimPam Pumpkin Tart’ is cooking, make the dressing. Mix the tahini with a little water, then blend the lemon and yoghurt. Add sea salt. Mix the salad leaves with a little olive oil and lemon juice. When ready to serve. Place the dressing over the pumpkin and scatter the

salad leaves over the tart, followed by the roasted seeds. Combine with PimPam Pumpkin beer, the new seasonal handcrafted beer from Tyris. Serve the tart and pop open a PimPam Pumpkin. Try and say that backwards after you’ve had one!

INGREDIENTS: 1 kg roasted round pumpkin 4 red onions sliced Olive oil 1 teaspoon thyme 1 clove garlic 1 scant teaspoon chilli flakes 1 sheet Puff pastry

VALENCIA EL ARENALFOOTBALL

MESTALLA EXPECTS

Marcelino and his team finally felt the full wrath of the Valencia CF fans’ sheer frustration after a series of disappointing results have left the club flirting with the relegation zone.

For the first time this season, the stadium was a sea of white handkerchiefs at the referee’s final whistle with Girona. Once again, the VCF players construed to drop points at home against a plucky team, albeit with little ambition or creativity. Instead, the Catalans relied on another Valencia self-inflicted defensive mistake and a forward line firing blanks. Consequently, Girona stole a result that performance was not worthy of. Time and time again this season, Los Che have gifted points to teams through clumsiness and poor concentration levels. Three of the four Champions League goals scored

against Valencia to date have been as a result of needless penalties given away in a moment of madness or panic. Almost a third of the way through the campaign and the club are wearing the tag of the “La Liga draw specialists”. In the eleven league games played so far, Valencia have drawn eight of them and the constant tinkering of the squad gives the team’s performances a lack of coherency & fluency. The air of expectancy the fans felt after such a positive season last year has gradually drained away over the last couple of months. The rotation system deployed by Marcelino has not produced any positives as yet. The team’s centenary season has the possibility of going down as one of the most perplexing in the club’s history. The home game against Leganés only

seemed to intensify the murmurs of discontent at the Mestalla. A lacklustre performance saw Garay give away a stupid penalty midway through the second half…after the danger had been cleared! Gerard Gumbau stepped up and gleefully converted the gift he was presented. Ten corners to one highlighted Valencia’s domination in the game but Parejo’s poor distribution in dead ball situations and sloppy finishing looked like giving the Madrid-based side three points. However, late in the game, Gaya received the ball from the right after finding space on the left hand side of the pitch. He hit a cross-field shot from just inside the area, which took a wicked deflection before beating the outstretched hands of the goalkeeper. The team’s next match was away

35

at the majestic San Mamés against Athletic Bilbao and was another anti-climatic affair. Both sides are struggling for points and goals so it was unsurprising that the contest ended in a goaless stalemate. Then, in the league, came the Girona encounter at the Mestalla. A carbon copy of the Leganés game in many ways. Domination throughout the match by Valencia, without any penetration, coupled with a serious defensive error that gifted the visitors a goal. Again, there was another squad rotation with Wass playing at right back for the first time. Kondogbia was given Parejo’s role, due to the latter being injured. However, this time there was to be no equaliser due to the superb performance in goal by Girona’s Canadian-born shot stopper ‘Bono.’ Guedes was clearly injured for the final third of the match, grimacing and collapsing to the ground every time he kicked the ball. When Gameiro and Batshuayi came on late in the game, the Portuguese star still remained on the pitch. Instead, Marcelino opted to change Wass and Coquelin (two of the

better players on the day) but both of the oncoming strikers failed to make any kind of impact. The one bright note was the quality of the dead ball deliveries from Wass. All of his corner kicks were dangerouslooking. Unlike Parejo’s corners, they always beat the first defender on the front post. Also, the one free-kick he had looked goal bound until crashing into the wall. With the Valencia skipper sidelined for a few weeks there is ample time for the Dane to submit a claim to Marcelino, proving he is the better option for taking all the set plays. In truth, the gap between the big three in La Liga (Barcelona and the two Madrid clubs) and the others is not as great as it once was and this is reflected in the league table. If Valencia were playing the free-flowing football they were last year then they would be flying high in the league. This is the irritating thing for the fans as “on paper” they have a better squad than before. However, for some reason, the likes of Parejo and Rodrigo are shadows of the players they were last season.

Above all, they are missing the “Z” factor - Simone Zaza. A talisman on the pitch and an even greater influence off it. His presence has been greatly missed and his replacements, Gameiro and Batshuayi, have yet to convince the Mestalla they are suitable substitutes for the passionate Italian. The one victory to come in October was in Zaragoza. A very young Valencia team took on CD Ebro in the Copa del Rey and came from a goal down to beat the club from the third group of ‘Segunda División B’. Kangin Lee started for Los Che and the youngster from Benidorm, Alex Blanco, also got a few minutes playing time. However, it was the experienced Santi Mina (himself only 22) who scored a brace to give Valencia a 2-1 lead going into the return fixture in early December. With regard to Valencia in the Champions League and the two games with Young Boys of Bern… the away tie was in many ways also a mirror image of the matches against Leganés and Girona. The team looked comfortable and unthreatened until an unforced error changed the context of the game in Switzerland. However, the

home game did give some respite to Marcelino and joy to the fans as Valencia claimed a victory at the Mestalla for the first time in eight games. The crowd were treated to the celebratory goal antics of Santi Mina twice and Carlos Soler scored the goal of the match in a 3-1 win for the hosts. The other news on the night was that Cristiano Ronaldo scored against his old club Manchester United to put Juventus in front. Amazingly, the Red Devils turned it around in the last four minutes. Firstly, Juan Mata levelled the tie and then in the last minute of normal time Sandro scored via his own goal. That United victory makes Valencia’s chances of getting out of the group stages increasingly tough with two matches still to play for each team. The current woes for Valencia are of little concern to Levante UD fans who are enjoying a fantastic start to the season. The undoubted highlight to the ‘Granota’ faithful was the famous 2-1 away victory over Real Madrid at the Bernabéu recently. This result was sandwiched between victories over Getafe away and Leganés at home that gave them a 100% league record in October. November looked to also be starting with a victory for Levante until a late, late equaliser from Alfonso Pedraza Sag cancelled out a second half own goal from Ramiro Funes Mori to give the local derby game parity.

He has married these interests in this atmospheric “beer cellar”, which for was a bar and later a warehouse for fabric for mattresses. He tells us that Llúpol is the term for hops in valenciano. Inside, you will find old-fashioned 1940s-style ceramic walls with around 200 craft beers from Spain, UK, USA, Denmark, Switzerland and more... Including flavours like chilli and chocolate! You can listen to his retro vinyl collection plus informed advice about the stunning range of attractive beers on display, as you browse for your choice of highly original cerveza. BIOPARC VALENCIA

Built as part of the Cabacera park development at the Mislata end of the Turia river bed, the Bioparc opened in 2008. It is a new-generation zoo where the idea was to move away completely from the bad old days of the ‘Viveros Gardens’ enclosed zoo, embracing the philosophy of “zoo-immersion” in line with other developments around the world like ‘Orlando Animal World’ and the ‘Singapore Zoo’. The idea with Bioparc Valencia has been to create large spaces for the animals, which represent different African environments using clever design and indigenous plants and trees. As far as possible this recreates their natural habitat, mixing animals which would naturally cohabitate in the wild (avoiding mixing natural predators with their prey of course, the lions and leopards each get their own area). All of which means the animals are happier and healthier and we get to feel that we are experiencing something approaching what seeing these animals in the wild would be like. Also, we are visiting their environment rather than them becoming part of ours.

However, this is still a zoo and all the issues about keeping wild animals in captivity for our enjoyment remain, but in terms of the welfare of these animals it is clearly a vast improvement on what went before and the commitment of the park to wildlife protection means that part of the ticket price goes to worldwide animal conservation. For the most part, the feeling as you are walking around is that the animals have all the space and you are just getting the chance to briefly observe them and enjoy them without intruding too much. You can have a beer on the restaurant terrace looking out on Zebras and exotic birds. They are completely unbothered by your presence to the point that they don’t seem to even realise you are there. The park stretches over 100,000 square metres and has more than 4,000 animals of 250 different species that is dedicated entirely to Africa, divided into different areas and habitats. Areas concentrating on Asia and the Americas are planned but, given the present economic climate, they are unlikely to appear in the near future.

The Madagascar zone, like the island itself, is separated off from the rest of the park. It is the only part of the park where you walk amongst the animals themselves, lemurs running and jumping around you as you wander along the path, which winds through the enclosure. The Equatorial Africa zone in which you walk through what looks like a huge dark tree trunk and it has crocodiles, tortoises and boas. The Niger Delta area has hippos, mandrill baboons, otters and ducks living together amongst dark sand pools and indigenous trees. There is an area dedicated to the green mountain forests of Ethiopia with fierce looking leopards and, in a separate enclosure, chimpanzees and cranes and another area representing the valleys of the Congo with its buffalos and pelicans and Gorillas who sit and look at you disinterestedly through the glass. The Kitum cave area (named after the famous caves in Kenya partially “mined” out of the rock by elephants in search of salt) allows you to observe the animals of the great lakes of Africa, its hippos,

41

Nile crocodiles, fish and turtles, from above and below the water. There is a huge, dusty elephant area with tall rock faces and man-made Baobab trees and a pool where the elephants swim which can be quite spectacular if they happen to fancy a dip while you are there. Meerkats (surely everyone’s favourite), mongooses and porcupines each also have their own enclosure. The largest area of the park is dedicated to the Savannah with its giraffes, Zebras, rhinos and antelopes all roaming together and up above and separated by huge rocks, the lions. The Savannah area is at the centre of

the park and you can walk all the way around it, the path leading you from ground level to where the restaurant is situated, to up above at the level of the lions where you can look down at the giraffes who come up close to get to the grass at the top of their enclosure. Despite all this, the park has never achieved the number of visitors it originally hoped for when it was built. Initially, the park expected 650,000 visitors a year which would rise to a million in successive years; the reality has been that they have not yet reached that target. Ticket prices are 23.80€ for an individual adult ticket and 18€ for children. If you live in the city, it’s well worth getting an annual

pass, which works out only slightly more than the one-off price allowing you to come and go as you please to a place which definitely merits successive visits. This is a huge, respectful and more dignified improvement on what went before and the philosophy of the Bioparc means that Valencia has a zoo which puts many similar institutions to shame. STATION TO STATION ESTACIÓN DEL NORTE , VALENCIA

There is something magnificent and Jules Verne-like about old mainline railway stations that their clean-lined, concrete & glass modern counterparts can never quite recapture…however beautifully designed. The ultra-fast AVE (Alta Velocidad Española) train arrived in Valencia at a purpose-built station nearly eight years ago. As Valencia advances into a new age of high-speed rail links, underground tunnels and metro systems, the grand old ‘Estación del Norte’ is beginning to look more and more like an obsolete museum piece. But as a monument to Valencia’s Modernist past and the top-hatted gentlemen who dreamed of bringing Valencia into the modern world of the twentieth century, it’s well worth preserving. The Estación del Norte was a replacement for the first mainline station in Valencia, which had been built and designed by the British company Beatty and Shepherd (now Balfour Beatty Engineering) in 1850. It stood on what is now the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, more or less where the Telefonica building is today, with its tracks squeezing through the old medieval city walls, which were still yet to be demolished. The British were soon bought out by Valencia’s very own Andrew Carnegie-style industrialist,

the first Marques de Campo. Along with some other bewhiskered big nobs of nineteenth Century Valencia, he set up the Compañía del Norte and started work on the first railway lines out of the city. They had big plans and, in 1906, the old station was demolished and replaced by the present day one. The building of the new station, along with the demolishing of the medieval walls and the spread of the city to the south and west, was a sign of Valencia flexing its muscles in an attempt to lose its provincial tag in favour of a more cosmopolitan image. The idea of opening itself up to the world was pushed along by Valencia’s ambitious larger-than-life mayor, Cirilo Amorós. This was a time when the new central post office was also built and the port was being improved and expanded as a motor for business, sending Valencian goods out to the rest of Europe and putting the city firmly on the map. The original plan was to build the station on the Gran Via, close at hand to the Mayor and his cronies… these Cánovas folk always want everything right on their doorstep. However, it was decided that this was too far from the city centre and instead the busy Calle de Jativa which followed the route of the now demolished walls

was chosen, much to the dismay of the citizens of Ruzafa who didn’t want the dirty iron beast to pass so near to their houses. The owners of the bullring also complained that the building work would affect trade. But there was no stopping the dreams of the powers-that-be and work went on regardless. Ruzafa was rewarded with new housing developments and plenty of jobs for its residents. Despite the desire to show how worldly and cosmopolitan the city could be…the station designers (like many Valencians who get misty-eyed over the thought of women with metal combs in their hair collecting oranges in their frilly aprons) couldn’t resist the temptation of making the whole thing a modernist celebration of all things stereotypically Valencian. Flat and long like a rural “Masía” (farmhouse), the building is painted tobacco-stain yellow with stucco motifs of orange branches and folkloric scenes from the Valencia huerta both inside and out. Above the front entrance are two mosaics of Valencian women dressed like falleras lolling about in the countryside and (weirdly) a couple of naked cherubs playing with some dangerous looking railway equipment. Inside, the station is bursting with

ESTACIÓN DE VALENCIA-JOAQUÍN SOROLLA Art Deco modernist touches like the goldfish bowl lamps hanging from ornate, iron branches. The woodpanelled entrance hall has ceramic signs wishing passengers a pleasant journey in ten languages including English, Arabic and Japanese (but not Valenciano!) and a row of wooden, confession box-like ticket booths. Ceramics and ironwork are everywhere, with the old station bar particularly plush with its idyllic scenes from Albufera. One thing is missing though, the sea. No anchors or boats not even a few fish amongst the rice fields and orange trees. A classic example of Valencia living up to its image as a city with its back firmly to the sea. The huge roof covering the platforms has some nifty iron work (they just don’t rivet & weld like they used to, do they?) with a ventilation strip down the middle, to let the steam and smoke out. There are two large twenty-four hour clocks moulded into the pillars. The five-point star of the Compañía del Norte is also everywhere, giving the place a bit of a feel of Soviet architecture amongst all the showy

modernism, something Franco and his mates later obviously failed to notice. With all the comings and goings it has seen over the last century, the station, like any of its type, has become part of countless memories. George Orwell in his book ‘Homage to Catalonia’ talks of spending a sticky, uncomfortable night stuck on a train at Valencia’s Estación del Norte during the Civil war. When the treasures from El Prado museum were sent to Valencia, to keep them out of the hands of Franco’s advancing armies, they arrived here by train. The station is also the classic place to arrive in Valencia during Fallas. Just walk out the front and you’ll be right in the middle of a marching band and within easy hearing distance of the Mascletá. But it´s obvious that the station is now starting to look like it has outlived its purpose. It’s too small for the new high-speed lines, there’s nowhere that comfortable to sit and it’s cold in winter and boiling hot in summer. Beautiful but unpractical in the 21st century.

The AVE (Valencia to Madrid) is competitive with prices with the airlines and they even claim it is cheaper than going by car, especially if you book well in advance. Pretty expensive for a family but doable if you’re pushing the boat out for a once in a while night out in Madrid, or a trip to the theatre or the museums. The whole thing is, of course, aimed principally at business folk and perhaps for the first time the idea of living in Valencia and working in Madrid becomes a possibility. Also those hundreds of thousands of Madrileños who spend summer at the beach in the Valencian region now have another option to avoid the legendary August traffic jams. Valencia is arguably looking more towards the sea as many Madrileños possibly see it as their gateway to the beaches. While the grand old station will stand as a monument to the past, canny Cirilo Amorós finally got his wish of having a station quite near the plusher parts of the Gran Via.
