Welcome! TO THE PREMIER ISSUE OF THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY GUIDE TO THE ARTS. If you’re visiting the area, and you’re looking for art, you’ve come to the right place. We’re not New York, or L.A. but we have way better wine, and you can drive through our beautiful green valley, from gallery to museum to gallery, stress free. You will be delighted to discover just what an active community of local artists this area offers. And of course, after a busy day of art appreciation, you’ll find some of the best food and wine in the world to top off your already stellar experience. If you’re a local, then you’ll be happy to see that there is now a guide to the art scene in the valley. As the publishers of Willamette Living Magazine, we began to see a need for someone to try to pull all the art content we feature into a comprehensive guide. This is our first run at it, and we’re already looking forward to our next one in 2024! This little publication is destined to be an annual thing, but in between printings make sure to check our companion website at: www.willamettevalleyarts.com for the latest.

If you’re a local artist or gallery owner, make sure to mark your calendar for inclusion in the next printing in December 2024! Everybody, make sure to pick up a copy of Willamette Living Magazine free wherever you see one in the valley. Or you can get on the website and join the mailing list to get every new digital edition free in your inbox. The great food we mentioned earlier... read about it in Willamette Living! Just visit: www.willametteliving.com. Thanks for reading,

Scott

Scott Alexander, Publisher Willamette Life Media LLC

On the Cover... Many of you locals already know who this is, it’s Earl Newman! An icon of the art world, Earl left his job teaching at Harvard University to set up shop on Venice Beach In California in the 1960’s. He is a master of hand lettering and has an otherworldly grasp of color and design. Earl created the posters for the Monterey Jazz Festival for a mindblowing FIFTY years. Those posters are in the permanent collection at the Smithsonian Museum. Earl now makes

his home in the Willamette Valley, and he is still making his one-of-a-kind silkscreen prints. Earl is a regular at the Oregon Country Fair in Veneta, OR. The cover photo was taken when Earl was creating a poster for the Corvallis Sister City Association. One of Corvallis’ sister cities is Uzhhorod, Ukraine. Earl created a special work “With People” as a fund raiser for the association. www.earlnewmanposters.com

Rebecca Arthur

Aziza Balle

Rebecca’s ceramic work features Traditional Western Raku, Pit Firing, Horsehair and other low-fire techniques where she is able to embrace the randomness and immediacy of a fast, lower temperature firing. “...the vessels become the canvases upon which I paint with fire...with surreal results.”

There is a space I dwell in when I paint. It is a place of not knowing, of openness and intuition, a sacred space. Colors, shapes and images materialize intuitively, without thinking. I’m inspired by color, first and foremost. And stillness, expanse, minute details and whimsy.

ILLUSTRATIONS/PORTRAITS I started out to be a children’s book illustrator, so my work is often whimsical. I also do figure drawings, portraits of people and animals, and colorful floral images. In addition to being an artist, I’m a teacher and enjoy helping others connect with their creativity. Cindy has been working with fused glass for decades and still finds glass amazing, and loves provoking curiosity. Through formal training and years of experience, she creates timeless art for homes, offices and gardens

Susan’s watercolors are inspired by Nature and always feature some element that could fly or dart from the page. She contrasts soft-edged watercolor backgrounds with delicately detailed birds, animals and botanical settings.

Sharon Cook

PAINTINGS

For Sharon, painting at its best comes close to the root meaning of the word “ecstasy” - to stand outside of, or transcend oneself. Oil and cold wax are the perfect medium for summoning images.

Currents Gallery 503-435-1613

PAINTINGS

I love to paint images of the northwest and this beautiful place I call home. I enjoy the depth and versatility of oil paint, and am continually amazed at the power of it. In my quest to understand the medium, I find that nothing is new, yet with the brush in my hand, everything is new.

Grant combines artistic expression and photographic technology to make compelling pictures. He creates both representational and abstract works, drawing from the documentary nature of the medium while also exploring new visions.

Jan has been working with clay, listening intently and making her ceramic figures for decades, with a deeply genuine collaborative recipe of clay, intuition, practiced processes and healing energy that can be seen and felt in her pieces.

Living in Oregon on a Century Farm, I strive to capture the beauty of my surroundings. Inspired by everyday objects, I create their abstract characteristics in texture, line, and color. Painting in a loose rustic style, I start each piece with a plan and finish with a journey of imagination.

Earl’s iconic, one-of-a-kind, hand-produced silkscreens are in the Smithsonian, and in homes all over the world. No two pieces are exactly alike. Earl is a true original.
