About the Pattern “ikirouta (fin)- permafrost (eng)” Ikirouta Mittens are made in collaboration with Opal yarns to highlight their Frozen collection. Chunky cables are worked flat to form a wristband; the band is later closed with your favorite buttons and crocheted loops (No buttonholes!) for an easy finish. Hand stitches are picked up along the edge and worked in stockinette in the round. An Indian thumb gusset adds interest to the palm and, more importantly, freedom of motion—important for tossing snowballs. For a coordinating hat, be sure to check out the Ikirouta Beanie pattern.

Pattern LEFT-HAND MITTEN: Wristband: With larger needles, CO 23 sts. Start working the wristband by following the Chart. Work Rows 1-14 4 (5) times total. BO loosely. Hand: Switch to smaller needles. Beginning at CO end, pick up and knit a total of 44 (48) sts along the sl st edge of the wristband. To pick up sts evenly, you may find it helpful to divide the wristband into quarters (using scrap yarn or stitch markers) and pick up 11 (12) sts per section. Divide the sts between 4 needles: 4-18-11-11 (4-20-12-12). Join to work in the round and K 5 rnds. Rnd 1: K to eon, m1r, k to eor. Work has 5-1811-11 (5-20-12-12) sts. [1 st increased] Rnd 2: K to eon, m1r, k to eor. Work has 6-1811-11 (6-20-12-12) sts. [1 st increased] Continue working the increases at the end of Needle 1 until the needle has 22 (24) sts. The work now has 62 (68) sts total. Sl the 18 (20) thumb sts from Needle 2 onto a stitch holder or scrap yarn. Divide sts from Needle 1 onto two needles. The work now has 44 (48) sts total [11-11-11-11 (12-12-12-12)]. Continue working in stockinette in the round until the hand section measures approx. 17 (18) cm / 6.75 (7)” OR 4 cm (1.5") less than desired length. Continue working in stockinette and at the same time start working the decreases: Needles 1 & 3: K1, ssk, k to eon. Needles 2 & 4: K until 3 sts remain on needle, k2tog, k1. Continue working the decreases on every rnd until 8 sts remain. Cut the yarn and pull the tail through the remaining sts and to the inside of the mitten. Thumb: Pick up the 18 (20) sts from stitch holder or scrap yarn + 2 additional sts. Divide the sts onto 3 needles [7-7-6 (7-7-8)].

Continue working in stockinette in the round until the thumb measures approx. 5 (5.5) cm / 2 (2)” OR 1.5 (2) cm / 0.5 (0.75)” less than desired length. Continue working in stockinette and at the same time start working decreases: k2tog at the beginning of each needle. Continue working the decreases on every rnd until 5 (4) sts remain. Cut the yarn and pull the tail through the remaining sts and to the inside of the mitten. RIGHT-HAND MITTEN: Wristband: Work as for left-hand mitten. Hand: Switch to smaller needles. Beginning at CO end, pick up 44 (48) sts along the sl st edge of the wristband and divide the sts between 4 needles: 11-11-18-4 (12-12-20-4). Join to work in the round and K 5 rnds. Rnd 1: K40 (44), m1l, k to eor. Work has 11-1118-5 (12-12-20-5) sts. [1 st increased] Rnd 2: K40 (44), m1l, k to eor. Work has 11-1118-6 (12-12-20-6) sts. [1 st increased] Continue working the increases at the beginning of Needle 4 until the needle has 22 (24) sts. The work now has 62 (68) sts total. Slip the 18 (20) thumb sts from Needle 3 onto a stitch holder or scrap yarn. Divide sts from Needle 4 onto two needles. The work now has 44 (48) sts total [11-11-11-11 (12-12-12-12)]. Work the rest of the right-hand mitten in the same way as the left-hand mitten. FINISHING: Lay mittens with palms down. Sew 3 buttons approximately 1 cm (.5") from the open edge of each wristband on the back of the hand-the side now facing you. Crochet a chain for each button and attach to opposite edge of wristband to form a loop, adjusting length and placement for button size and fit. Weave in the ends and block the mittens.
