About the Pattern “kide (fin)- crystal, grain (eng)” I could study the patterns of ice crystals in the window for hours. Kide Socks are worked top down in the round and with a French heel. The gusset shaping is worked with the sole stitches. The socks are finished with Kitchener stitch. For coordinating mitts and hat, check out my other Kide designs.

Finished Sizes

Choose which size to make according to foot circumference. Foot length is customizable. The socks are designed with approx 2 cm negative ease. Socks stretch and come loose after blocking and the first time they are worn. Unblocked work should feel a bit tight so that the sock will still fit nicely on the foot after you have finished blocking your work. If you wish to make the socks looser, go up a size.

Pattern CUFF: With smaller needles, CO 52 (54, 56, 62, 68, 72) sts with CC and divide between 4 needles. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist CO edge. Work the ribbing for 8 rnds total: *K1tbl, p1*; rep to eor. LEG: After the ribbing, switch to larger needles. K for 1 rnd and, at the same time, increase a total of 4 (2, 14, 8, 16, 12) sts: SIZE XS: K6, *M1, k13* 3 times, M1, k7. SIZE S: K13, M1, k27, M1, k14. SIZE M: K2, *M1, k4* 13 times, M1, k2. SIZE L: K4, M1, k7, *M1, k8* 5 times, M1, k7, M1, k4. SIZE XL: K2, *M1, k5* 2 times, *M1, k4* 11 times, *M1, k5* 2 times, M1, k2. SIZE XXL: K3, *M1, k6* 11 times, M1, k3. The work now has 56 (56, 70, 70, 84, 84) sts total. Continue working the leg by following the Chart on Page 6. The st pattern reps 4 (4, 5, 5, 6, 6) x per rnd. Work Chart Rnds 1-37. After the chart, redistribute sts between the four needles if necessary: 14-14-14-14 (14-1414-14, 17-18-17-18, 17-18-17-18, 21-21-21-21, 21-21-21-21). Continue working with MC: Rnd 1: K all sts. Rnd 2: K2tog at the beginning of each needle [4 sts decreased]. Work Rnds 1-2 2 (1, 3, 2, 5, 4) times total. [48 (52, 58, 62, 64, 68) sts total.] Switch back to smaller needles. Work one more rnd in stockinette and, at the same time, decrease 0 (0, 2, 2, 0, 0) sts evenly on the rnd. The work now has 48 (52, 56, 60, 64, 68) sts total. Divide the sts evenly between 4 needles: 12 (13, 14, 15, 16, 17) sts per needle. HEEL FLAP: The heel flap will be worked back and forth over sts from Needles 1 & 2.

Start by working the sts onto one needle: K all the sts on Needle 1 + k the sts from Needle 2 onto Needle 1; 24 (26, 28, 30, 32, 34) sts on needle. Work the reinforced heel flap for 24 (26, 28, 30, 32, 34) rows in total: WS: Sl1, p to eon. RS: *Sl1, k1* to eon. HEEL TURN: Continue working in the established reinforced st pattern and, at the same time, start working the decreases: WS: Sl1, p13, (14, 15, 16, 17, 18), p2tog, p1. RS: Sl1, work 5 sts in the established pattern, k2tog, k1. WS: Sl1, p until 1 st remains before the gap, p2tog, p1. RS: Sl1, work in the established pattern until 1 st remains before the gap, k2tog, k1. Continue working the decreases by repeating the last two rows until you have decreased all the sts from each side, ending with a RS row [notice that in sizes XS, M and XL you don’t work the p1 / k1 at the end on the last two rows]. The heel flap now has 14 (16, 16, 18, 18, 20) sts remaining and the yarn is on the left edge of the heel flap. Divide sts: One half on Needle 1 and the rest on Needle 2; 7 (8, 8, 9, 9, 10) sts per needle. Using Needle 2, pick up and k 1 st in each of the 12 (13, 14, 15, 16, 17) sl sts along the left edge of the heel flap + 1 st between the heel flap and the top of the foot. Needle 2 now has a total of 20 (22, 23, 25, 26, 28) sts. Work in stockinette across the top of the foot [Needles 3 & 4]. Using Needle 1, pick up 1 st in each of the 12 (13, 14, 15, 16, 17) sl sts along the right edge of the heel flap + 1 st between the heel flap and top of the foot.

K all 20 (22, 23, 25, 26, 28) sts on Needle 1. The work has 64 (70, 74, 80, 84, 90) sts total. The yarn is now in the middle of the sole. K to end of Needle 4 so that the yarn is between Needles 4 & 1, at the eor. GUSSET SHAPING: Set up the sole sts [Needles 1 & 2]: K11 (12, 13, 14, 15, 16), PM, ssk, continue working in the established reinforced sts pattern until 13 (14, 15, 16, 17, 18) sts remain on Needle 2, k2tog, PM, k11 (12, 13, 14, 15, 16). Work in stockinette across the top of the foot [Needles 3 & 4]. Continue working the decreases: Rnd 1: K all sts. Rnd 2: K11 (12, 13, 14, 15, 16), SM, ssk, continue working in the established reinforced sts pattern until 2 sts remain before the marker, k2tog, SM, k11 (12, 13, 14, 15, 16). Work in stockinette across the top of the foot [Needles 3 & 4]. Rep Rnds 1-2 until you have decreased the sole sts so that there are 2 sts remaining between the two markers. The work now has 48 (52, 56, 60, 64, 68) sts total [12 (13, 14, 15, 16, 17) sts per needle]. FOOT: Remove the markers and work in stockinette for 10 rnds. Continue working in stockinette either with MC or alternatively with CC until the work covers the smallest toe OR approx. 2.5 (3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5) cm or 1 (1.25, 1.5, 1.5, 1.75, 2)” shorter than your desired finished length. TOE SHAPING: Continue working in stockinette and at the same time start working decreases: Needles 1 & 3: K1, ssk, k to eon. Needles 2 & 4: K until 3 sts remain on needle, k2tog, k1. Rep decreases on every other rnd until 40 sts remain [10 sts per needle]. Continue working the decreases on every rnd until 16 (16, 16, 20, 20, 20) sts remain. Close the toe with Kitchener stitch.

All set up for decreases and gusset shaping!

KITCHENER STITCH: Sl the instep sts onto one needle and the sole sts onto one needle. Cut your yarn leaving a 30 cm/12” tail. The yarn is now on the right edge of the back needle. 1) K the first st on the front needle; don’t slide the stitch off the needle. Pull the yarn tail all the way through the st (always pull the yarn tail all the way through while grafting). 2) P the first st on the back needle; don’t slide it off. 3) P the first st on the front needle, and slide the stitch off. 4) K the next st on the front needle, but do not slide it off. 5) K the first st on back needle, and slide the stitch off. 6) P the next st on the back needle, but do not slide it off. Rep steps 3 through 6 until 2 sts remain. K these two sts together and slide both sts off the needles. Bring the yarn to inside of the sock and weave in all the ends and block the socks.
