Alkuja is the very first knitting pattern I have ever written. The original pattern published in 2018 contained only one size. Size options for the whole family were later added to the guide.
Work your way from the cuff to toe: Fancy and textured rib in the cuff, easy to knit flag stitch pattern in the leg, reinforced Dutch heel, and a beautiful instep where the pattern continues all the way to the tip of toes.

CUFF: With CO 39/ 42/ 45. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist CO edge. Start working the ribbing: Rnd 1: *P1, k2*. Rep *-* eor. Rnd 2: *P1, Sl1, kfb, psso*. Rep *-* eor. Work rnds 1-2 3 x total.
Proceed to heel turn: WS: Sl1, p10/ 13/ 13, p2tog. RS: Sl1, k4/ 6/ 6, k2tog. WS: Sl1, p4/ 6/ 6, p2tog. RS: Sl1, k4/ 6/ 6, k2tog. Continue working the decreases as above until there are 6/ 8/ 8 sts left on the needle ending with an RS row (if necessary, work another WS row to end with the RS facing).
K for 1 rnd and at the same time decrease 4/ 0/ 3 sts = 35/ 42/ 42 sts total.
The yarn is now on the left edge of the heel flap. Divide sts: One half on needle 4 and the rest on needle 1 (3-3/ 4-4/ 4-4).
LEG: Continue by working Chart I. The st pattern reps 5/ 6/ 6 x per rnd. Work chart rnds 1-7 6/ 6/ 7 x total.
Using needle 1, pick up and k1 st in each of the sl sts (9/ 11/ 11) along the left edge of the heel flap + 1 st between the heel flap and the top of the foot. Needle 1 now has a total of 13/ 16/ 16 sts.
K 1 rnd and at the same time decrease 0/ 1/ 1 sts = 35/ 41/ 41 sts total. Divide sts on the needles: 9-9-8-9/ 11-10-9-11/ 11-10-9-11. Proceed to the heel.
Continue working Chart II across the top of the foot (needles 2 & 3).
HEEL: The heel flap will be worked back and forth on needles 4 & 1. Start by knitting the sts from needle 1 onto needle 4 = 18/ 22/ 22 sts on needle. Continue by working the reinforced heel for 18/ 22/ 22 rows in total. WS: Sl1, p eor. RS: *Sl1, k1*. Rep *-* eor.
Using needle 4, pick up 1 st between the heel flap and top of the foot + 1 st in each sl sts (9/ 11/ 11) along the right edge of the heel flap. Knit all the 13/ 16/ 16 sts on needle 4. The yarn is now in the middle of the heel flap, between needles 4 & 1. The work has 43/ 51/ 51 sts total (13-9-8-13/ 16-10-9-16/ 16-10-9-16).

SHAPE GUSSET: Start shaping the gusset. Needle 1: K until 2 sts remain on needle, k2tog. Needles 2 & 3: Continue working on Chart II. Needle 4: Ssk, k eon. Rep decreases every second rnd until 9-98-9/ 11-10-9-11/ 11-10-9-11 sts remain. FOOT: After gusset shaping, continue working the instep sts [needles 2 & 3] following Chart II and the sole sts [needles 1 & 4] in stockinette until the work covers the smallest toe OR approx. 1.5 cm or 0.6” shorter than your desired finished length.
FINISHING: Cut the yarn and pull the tail through the remaining sts, to the inside of the sock. Weave in the ends and block the sock. The primary way to block work is to moisten it until slightly damp and then gently shape it to the required measurements. BONUS! Show your magic by posting a pic of your Alkuja socks on Instagram and using hashtags #alkujasukat and #willamagia.
TOE SHAPING: Needle 1: K until 3 sts remain on needle, k2tog, k1. Needles 2 & 3: Continue working by Chart II. Needle 4: K1, ssk, k eon.
