TRASH TALK

Tackling Beauty Waste, One Container at a Time

Welcome to the second issue of Wash[er] Magazine! I am happy to report that our follow-up survey from issue #1 was a wealth of positive feedback so I hope this new issue hits an even higher bar with all of you. From the survey, 88% said they would love to see another issue and 83% said they’d like to know more about Wild Prairie and our products. Hopefully we hit the mark in our summer edition. Thanks to all of you who helped us guide our topics for this edition - we really did listen to what you had to say.

So what does Wash[er] mean and why the brackets? I do want to shed some light on the name as it came up in the feedback with a lot of you asking about it. The idea is this: the brackets separate two concepts - both the act of “washing” and the “washer”, or the user. I think it’s a fitting name considering our best-selling product is soap, yes? One respondent suggested that the name could have been Wild[er] - I thought that was pretty clever, too. Hopefully that clears up the queries around our magazine name!

We definitely have a lot to share in this issue. If gardening is your thing, then you’ll like our feature on the benefits of our skin-rejuvenating and intensive Gardener’s line. It’s been a part of our brand for over 14 years, and sells out every year - and honestly, it’s great for use by anyone. We also have some amazing new soap scents coming this summer that are really different for us in terms of shape and style. Check out our new Beauty Bar Trio on page 8 and our Atlas Body Bar, page 14 for the inside scoop on these fabulous new products launching soon.

Finally, I wanted to thank everyone who has contributed to any of our previous Accessible Soap for All Campaigns. These are always a huge hit with both our customer-base and the various community organizations we work with. I know that the soap goes to good use, is much appreciated and we couldn’t do it without you. For upcoming campaigns, keep an eye on our social media for updates - we have a few in the works.

Enjoy the read and thank you for helping us create a Wild[er] issue of Wash[er]!

No More Rough Stuff:

A Simple Guide to Men’s Skincare

When it comes to the science of skin, men and women have many differences. While that might not be a big surprise, it may shed some light on the reasons men tend to intuitively tone down their skincare routines. Here’s just some of what we found about the differences:

• Testosterone drives oil production, meaning that men often have oilier skin, and therefore better natural hydration.

• Male skin is typically around 25% thicker and has less underlying fat and more collagen than female skin. Thicker skin will appear fuller, more plump, and tends to be more resilient overall. And that additional collagen? It helps keep men’s skin looking younger, longer.

• Guys are at a higher risk of developing skin irritation from rituals like facial shaving. This common act of grooming causes friction and can often place skin under stress.

• Men have larger pores and typically oilier skin making them somewhat more prone to conditions like acne and blemishes. Because they have more sebaceous glands and therefore more pores, controlling the oil without overdoing it is a delicate balancing act.

Thankfully, men’s skincare doesn’t have to be complicated. If simplicity is a priority, check out Wild Prairie’s two-step skincare routine and product suggestions.

6

Step 1: Cleanse

Because our soap is made using the traditional, cold-process method with plant-based oils, it effectively cleanses without stripping the skin of its natural moisture barrier. The gentle nature of our soap means it’s ideal for use on all parts of your body. We recommend:

• Classic Man - Great for face, body, and hair

• Rebel Shave Bar - Double duties as a cleanser and rich shaving soap

• Charcoal Rosa Soap - Helps remove impurities and balance oily skin

• Gentle Soul Soap - Scent-free and perfect for sensitive or dry skin

Step 2: Moisturize

As your body’s largest organ, the skin has a natural moisture barrier that protects against bacteria, pollutants, and other environmental irritants. Our soap cleanses without disturbing that natural barrier but you still need to reinforce that protection with additional moisture. We recommend:

• Rebel After Shave Balm - Soothes and hydrates after shaving

• Gentle Soul Hand & Body Lotion - Scent-free and designed for sensitive skin

• Woodstock Hand & Body Lotion - Reduces redness caused by dry skin

• Grapefruit Hand & Body Lotion - Antioxidants eliminate impurities and protect skin

8
INTRODUCING

Clays are naturally occurring, mineral-rich elements derived from various sources including volcanic ash, glaciers, rocks and sediment. When used in soaps and other cosmetics, specific clays attach themselves to oil, bacteria and other impurities within the skin to draw them out, leaving skin cleansed, clarified and balanced.

FRENCH YELLOW CLAY

Luxurious and velvety, French Yellow Clay comes from natural rock quarries in France and is high in iron, magnesium, potassium, and calcium. It helps to gently and effectively draw impurities and oils out of the skin, making it the perfect exfoliant for those with sensitive skin. This powerhouse purifier helps stimulate circulation and tone the skin leaving it feeling smooth, fresh and radiant.

Ideal for addressing acne, dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis.

FRENCH RED CLAY

Containing high concentrations of iron and copper oxides, French Red Clay revitalizes and exfoliates dull and congested skin giving it a brighter appearance. It reduces the appearance of large pores by absorbing oils and removing dead skin cells. An excellent choice for all skin types, it can be used in a wide range of cosmetic products to help tighten, tone and soothe a variety of skin conditions.

Ideal for normal to oily skin types.

BRAZILIAN PURPLE CLAY

Considered a premium cosmetic ingredient, Brazilian Purple Clay is rich in key minerals like magnesium, titanium, silica, and iron. This kaolin-style clay is especially popular in products designed for dry or sensitive skin as it helps nourish and detoxify without excess drying. Used in cosmetic products aimed at helping to restore a youthful skin tone, it is an effective yet gentle additive that leaves skin silky smooth.

Ideal for dry, sensitive, and aging skin types.

Edmonton’s K-Beauty Connection

Taking the leap into a culture known for their obsession with healthy skin and the famous 10-step skincare routine, Wild Prairie founder, Tanya Zurock is confident that her company’s brand ethos of simplicity will win the hearts and, in turn, skincare routines, of k-beauty consumers.

As of November 2022, travelers on Korean Air have been purchasing her company’s Edmonton-made products via Sky Shop Magazine, one of the world’s most successful onboard premium shopping magazines, as well as in duty free shops and department stores.

Capitalizing on the busy travel season, Korean gift-giving culture and the population’s zealous passion for skincare products, business for Wild Prairie has been brisk. “In the past year, we’ve sent several shipping containers of our Edmonton-made products to

Korea and in just the past few months, over 40,000 lip balms because of our popularity on the airline,” says Zurock. “I’m so proud of our production team - they’re doing an amazing job keeping up with demand.”

Along with her Korea import partners Kortex Co. and Tricycle Corp, leading online fashion and lifestyle companies, Tanya expects demand to remain high throughout the year.

“Our goal is to create a new business model through importing Canadian organic and natural goods like those produced by Wild Prairie Soap Company and compete in a high-demand market against other major players,” says Kortex president Austin Cho. “After months of testing and using Wild Prairie products, we’re confident that these are exactly the kind of natural products that everyday Koreans are seeking for their skincare routines.”

IS IN THE

you bet EFFECTIVE? absolutely ECO-FRIENDLY?

100% ALL NATURAL?

Waterless and long-lasting, solid shampoo and conditioner bars are the hot trend in high performance hair care. It’s not hard to understand why they’re so popular; solid bars are an eco-friendly, cost-saving, and effective alternative to traditional liquid shampoos and conditioners. Let’s find out why.

INGREDIENT BREAKDOWN

Health Canada’s cosmetic labeling rules follow the INCI standard (International Nomenclature Cosmetic Ingredient) which can lead to some confusing (and sometimes intimidating) ingredient names. Here’s the low down on some ingredients we use that you may not be familiar with.

small bar

Liquid shampoos contain up to 90% water (yes, even those high priced salon-quality options). Solid bars use zero water in both the formulation and production processes, meaning they’re concentrated for producing high sudsing action and are guaranteed to last up to 3x longer than your average bottle of liquid product.

big impact

You don’t need to sacrifice effectiveness when shopping for products that align with your values. We formulate all of our bars to target common hair and scalp issues while still checking off all the other important boxes. Our shampoo and conditioner bars are always:

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate is a surfactant (foaming cleanser) derived from the fatty acids of coconut oil. It is used to create suds and cleanse the hair.

Coco-glucoside is a surfactant derived from coconut and fruit sugars. It is used to create suds and cleanse the hair.

Cetearyl Alcohol is a non-drying, fatty alcohol derived from coconut or palm oil. It is used for softening the skin and hair.

Cetyl Alcohol is a non-drying, waxy alcohol derived from coconut or palm oil. It is used as an emulsifier to help release oils into the hair and keep the product stable and in a solid format.

a bar for everyone

Formulated to ensure that your hair is clean, shiny and healthy, each scent targets different scalp and hair concerns. To narrow down which bar is best for you, pick 2-3 of the following statements that describe your hair and scalp.

I have dull /dry hair

I am prone to dandruff

I have a sensitive scalp

I have an itchy scalp

I have oily hair and wash often

I have coloured /dyed hair

I use styling products daily

Tiny packaging presents a big problem, but there are consumer solutions to conquering beauty trash.

You know the offenders - the mascara wands, the lipstick containers, the powder compacts - they’re just a few of the thousands of short-lifecycle beauty packaging components that end up in our landfills and oceans because they aren’t accepted in household recycling programs.

It’s no secret - the beauty industry has a packaging problem. Although the global plastics and packaging problem is bigger than the beauty industry, beauty has a unique challenge: most of the packaging is highly unlikely to be recycled through traditional systems. The industry generates over 120 billion packages every year, with most ending up in landfill – they’re often too small, too flexible, or made of too many materials to be traditionally recycled. All those tiny cosmetic contraptions? They’re headed for the trash.

That’s where the nonprofit group Pact Collective is making groundbreaking changes. Through Pact, eco-minded consumers and manufacturers alike are working together to prevent items from heading to landfills by taking steps that allow beauty packaging to be reused, repurposed, or recycled. With over 300 drop-off bins across North America, and a mail-in program, Pact diverted over 150,000 pounds of waste in 2022 alone.

You can find a Pact collection bin at Wild Prairie Soap Company or visit pactcollective.org to find a bin location near you. Simply bring your clean and empty beauty containers (from any brand) and we’ll handle the rest.

Tilted Barn Pet Foods (formerly Farm Fresh Pet Foods), is owned by Nicole (Edmonton) and her business partner Kim (Carstairs). Wild Prairie founder Tanya Zurock chatted with Nicole to find out what it takes to build a pet food empire. Here’s how it went.

I don’t have a dog, but my cats both love your treats. How did you become an owner of a pet food company?

I was hired by the original founder as a summer student in 2005. My now-business partner, Kim, was a distributor of the products when I came on board. In 2007 the founder decided he wasn’t interested in pursuing the business. Kim and I were on a call discussing his decision and both said “What are we going to feed our dogs?! We should take it over… how hard could it be?” Haha what we wish we would have known!

self-professed coffee junkie and queen of soft, meaty treats for dogs made with clean and simple Canadian-sourced ingredients.
Nicole Porterfield, Find a retailer near you! 20

Your company recently went through a name change and rebrand. Tell me about it and the reason behind it. There is a company in Florida with the same name that we had - Farm Fresh Pet Foods. We started to bump into them more and thought we would get ahead of any chance of litigation. We became Tilted Barn Pet Co. in September 2022. We LOVE the name. It is definitely more us. It’s fun and represents our Canadian prairie roots.

It’s a great name. And you know I appreciate and love all Canadian roots stories! Where do you sell your products?

Our treats are sold at specialty, independent and boutique pet stores across Canada and the US. We don’t sell direct to consumers, but some of our retail partners sell our treats online. Our target retailer is that place where they know your dog’s name, what allergies they have and make a fuss over them!

What’s the best part of your life as an entrepreneur?

The flexibility of my schedule and being in control of my own chaos. I love my job and adore the challenges my work presents me. It never feels like work. I’ve learned so much about myself –and found strengths I had no idea I possessed.

And the worst part of it?

I have a tough time shutting off or stepping away from work. There are always emails and when fires need to be put out, it’s me or Kim that need to jump to solve the issue. Work-life balance is a hard concept for me.

What do you love most about dogs?

I love that dogs are just happy to see you all the time! They have zero judgment. They’ll sit with you when you’re sad, they’re excited when you are joyful.

I’m curious to know what kind of dog you have.

We have a Cavapoochon named Nellie. She is a mix of a Poodle, Bichon and King Charles Cavalier. I had huge hopes of her being my dog and that she’d go everywhere with me, but it turns out that she’s a homebody and picked my husband as her person instead.

What are your challenges as a woman-owned business?

This past year I’ve been traveling a lot and I get asked “what does your husband do with the kids while you’re away?”. This blows my mind. It’s 2023. He parents. He does the same thing I would do if he were traveling for his job. Second challenge would be facing a lack of faith by some that we can achieve our goals. Kim and I have high aspirations, and we know we can hit our targets. We’re not impulsive and have put a lot of effort into our business plan. There is no reason we shouldn’t be taken seriously.

What’s next for Tilted Barn?

Right now we’re focused on growing sales and evolving the new brand into something next level. We’re launching a really flavourful limited-edition treat this summer that we know is going to fly off shelves. There’s really so much going on but we’re happy to keep it to ourselves until the time is right.

I love my job and adore the challenges my work presents me. It never feels like work.

OUR PASSION FOR

Giving Back

We believe that sharing our soap with those in need is an important part of supporting our communities and the people who may not be in a position to purchase it. Initially, our Accessible Soap for All campaigns were driven by the pandemic, but in light of the huge success and impact that these missions had, we’ve continued to work with groups in need.

We build each ASFA campaign based on the needs of the organization with whom we’ve partnered. We use our voice to help amplify the mandate of our partners as we communicate the invaluable work they do in our local community.

So far in 2023, we are pleased to announce that we have raised over 500 bars for community members in need. In January we donated 200 bars to the Edmonton Food Bank, and in March we sent over 300 bars to FearIsNotLove in Calgary to support women and children fleeing domestic violence.

With the help of our incredible customers, we’ve been able to raise over 7500 bars since launching our first campaign in 2020. Thank you to everyone who supports these efforts and for helping us share the accessibility and effectiveness of high-quality, natural soap for all.
