Three Days of Terror By: Jonathan Avila The Paris terrorist attack on Wednesday, January 7, went on to be three different days and three different attacks. In those three days, 17 people were killed in total. The first terror attack in Paris killed 12 people at the satire magazine, where the Charlie Hebdo offices is located. Charlie Hebdo and his cartoonist staff were targeted by extremists for making cartoons that allegedly offended the Islamic community for a long period of time. The two extremists took action and located them at the building, then called out their cartoonist and shut to kill with precision. The

next day on Thursday, a French police woman was shot dead. The woman officer was 26 years old when she died with her partner responding to a traffic accident. The two Paris attack-

ers were possibly the ones involved in her death. On the third day, a terrorist was holding up a Jewish grocery store. The attacker killed four hostages in the kosher grocery store. The terrorist that was holding hostages was killed by the police in the rescue, and the rest of the hostages fled to safety. In the end, 17 people were massacred by three terrorist suspects over the three days. France honored those who have been killed during the terrorist attack with a large gathering on Sunday, January 10th.

U.S Restores Relations with Cuba By: Elisabet Carvajal Ever since the Cold War occurred, U.S- Cuba relations have failed to flourish, only until recently. In his speech, President Obama ordered the restoration of the entire diplomatic affiliation with Cuba. Also, President Obama ordered the opening of an embassy in the Capitol for the first time in more than fifty years. The announcement came after the prisoner swap negotiation that broke the barrier between the two countries, divided by only ninety miles of ocean waters, distrust and bitterness coming all the way from the Cuban missile crisis. President Obama cleared things up by saying “We will end an outdated approach that for decades has failed to advance our interests and instead we will begin to normalize relations between our two countries ”. A call conducted by telephone between President Raul Castro and President Barack Obama lead to

the liberty of Allan Gross, the American international development professional who was working as a government subcontractor for the U.S and the three Cuban spies, caught in 1998, were released. The United States will now ease restrictions on remittances, travel and banking, while Cuba will allow more internet access and release 53 Cubans identified as political prisoners by the United States. President Castro agreed that “the progress made in our exchanges prove that it is possible to find solutions to many problems”. President Obama’s decision will also ease restrictions for family visits, public performances, professional educational and religious activities among other things. However, ordinary tourism will still be banned under the law. President Obama will also allow greater banking ties, making it possible to use credit and debit cards in Cuba. As of now, the talks will continue to see what resolutions can come about in this new change.

Featured Articles Boko Haram By Felipe Martinez The first couple of months of this year have been bloodier than expected. While terrorist groups, like ISIS, are taking most of the media’s attention, there is an Islamic extremist group that puts ISIS to shame.

walked through five villages and each one was empty except for dead bodies.” This is a terrifying sight to imagine but what is even more chilling is that the Islamic militants control 70% of the Borno States.

Boko Haram has inflicted fear in Northern Nigeria since 2009. On January 3rd, they began an attack on the town of Baga. The population of Baga was of 10,000 and now it’s “virtually nonexistent.” Baga became a ghost town and there are bodies littered around the streets. Authorities couldn’t agree on the exact number for the death toll but there was nearly 2,000 people killed during the massacre. Many more left the town and their homes behind in order to escape from Boko Haram. Some people stayed in their homes to hide and were burned alive. One victim said, “I

While these numbers are alarming they are also unreliable. The numbers that come out of Nigeria are not always trusted because there are many obstacles in the way of getting the truth, since the jihadists attacked mobile phone masts in the north-east. Officials in charge of broadcasting what is happening inside the country have also not answered calls. Over one million people have been displaced due to the conflict in the area. Yet, the Nigerian army is fighting to retake their towns.

Sleep Deprivation By Yasneli Alonso Sleep is as vital to your well-being, as important as the air you breathe, water you drink, and the food you eat. Sadly, not many teens are getting the sleep they need to function properly, which is 8 to 9 hours a night. Studies show that only 15% of teens reported sleeping 8 1/2 hours on school nights. Lack of sleep can affect students productivity in their school work and could even make them more prone to health risks. Drowsiness and falling asleep on the wheel causes more than 100,000 car crashes every year. Students are not getting the sleep they need due to many different reasons that vary per person. Some teens work to provide for their families, others have very busy schedules, and others stay up all night on their electronic devices, all resulting in sleep deprivation. Some tips to having a good night's sleep include the following:

Withhold from eating, drinking, or exercising within a few hours before going to bed.

Avoid consuming caffeine too late in the day such as pills, vitamins, and drinks that contain caffeine, this could interfere with good sleep.

Establish a consistent sleep schedule; this will help you feel less tired since it allows your body to get in sync with its natural patterns.

Shut down electronic devices up to two hours before bedtime. The blue light emitted by electronics could interfere with production of melatonin (the hormone that helps regulate sleep and wake cycles).

Although these are all ways to help you sleep better, the most important tip is making sleep a priority. After all, sleep is food for the brain! "Healthy Sleep Tips." Sleeping Tips & Tricks. Web. 14 Jan. 2015. <http://sleepfoundation.org/sleep-tools-tips/healthy-sleep-tips>.

Body Cameras and the LEO By Ivan Lores In the U.S. many incidents have transpired in the last year between the police and the public. In order to maintain trust and transparency many have wondered whether body cameras should be put on our officers. The consequences outweigh any benefits brought on by cameras. In a civilized world, we have struggled with answering the questions of who watches those who watch over us. We should feel protected not only against criminals but also against the authorities. Could body cameras on our LEOs (Law Enforcement Officers) really be the answer? "There's an appeal to [the camera] because it makes logical sense," Barak Ariel, a criminologist at the University of Cambridge said. "Now, between logical sense and evidence that actually supports it, there's quite a difference." Many supporters of body cameras flaunt Rialto, California as the prime example of the benefits this technology can provide. The police department saw a reduction in citizens' complaints compared to previous years before body cameras were introduced to the officers in that city. Although these results should not be ignored, it is not enough to prove overall usefulness. Rialto's police department is relatively small and the police chief directly oversaw the experiment. The results of one city's success does not translate to success in all situations or all cities. In the wake of the incidents with police in the last year, everyone is eager to find the potential benefits of body cameras. The consequences of the technology should be just as sought after. As one editorial in Canada's Globe and Mail expressed, that cameras "could turn every officer into a mobile, close circuit camera, hooked up to a data base tracking and recording people's movements across the city." These could bring consequences as people wouldn’t want to report crimes because they won't want to appear on camera. Another consequence would be cost, since each camera is between $800-$1,000. Combined with the money it takes to store all the data it would cost the government billions to outfit each police officer with a body camera. Friedman, Uri. "Do Police Body Cameras Actually Work?" Are Sharks What We Think They Are? By Gabriel Perez Sharks have been pegged as man-eating machines for many years and way too many reasons. The movie JAWS has impacted the definition of a shark immensely. Their evil and intimidating look even holds the pillars of the JAWS effect. In reality, sharks are beautiful and misunderstood sea creatures. In 2003 there were 4 fatal shark attacks worldwide. In the U.S alone, that same year…

26 people died as a result of contact with hot tap water.

31 people were killed by their pet dogs.

47 people were struck by lightning.

5,472 people had died due to intentional self-poisoning.

Another story involves a professional South Australian fisherman, Arnold Pointer. Arnold had set free a female great white shark that was caught in his fishing nets. The 17-feet long shark has been following him for 2 years ever since he freed the female shark from near death. Arnold had claimed, “Once I stop the boat she comes to me, she turns her back and lets me pet her belly and neck. She grunts, turns her eyes, and moves her fins up and down splashing the water happily.” Are sharks really the savages we think they are? The most probable reason sharks have attacked is because our shadows tend to look like those of a seal when looking up from the ocean. In the words of Bruce, the Great White Shark from Finding Nemo said, “I am a nice shark, not a mindless eating machine. If I am to change this image, I must first change myself. Fish are friends, not food.” "Bruce." Pixar Wiki. Web. 13 Feb. 2015. <http://pixar.wikia.com/Bruce>.

Dragic Brings His Talents to South Beach By: Jonathan Avila & Sabrina Tutusaus Goran Dragic wanted a new home, and the Miami Heat wanted a new point guard so the Heat swung a deal to get Dragic from the Phoenix Suns on Thursday, February 19. Miami gave up four of its players and two first-round picks to get Dragic. Miami sent two first-round picks to the Suns, who also get Danny Granger from the Heat. Point guard Norris Cole, Shawne Williams, and Justin Hamilton are all leaving Miami and are heading to New Orleans. Goran Dragic, joining Lebron James and Kevin Durant, averages 18 points and five assists per game while shooting 50 percent from the field since the start of last season. Dragic had told the Suns that he wanted to be in a better situation and leave the Phoenix point guard logjam. The Suns knowing that he was going to be a free agent this summer, knew that he was going to leave anyway, so they traded him now to be able to receive another player and not be empty handed. Dragic was third-team all-NBA last season and 2014 most improved player, which puts Dragic as the best option the Heat have in the point guard position this season. Services, ESPN.com.
