A design proposal to re-purpose redundant public infrastructure into attractive air filtration hubs that will monitor, inform and minimise everyday air pollution.

> Air pollution is a global challenge. It has no regard for geographic location or population demographic, but it is felt by all. Consumer choice on one continent can drive pollution on another.

Exacerbated by climate change affecting food production water and energy, it feeds into global supply chains negatively impacting air quality. But positive change is happening. Prevent, react, innovate and develop initiatives are being promoted by producers, suppliers, hauliers and the end consumer, all with a single aim of advocating clean air.

How might we ensure that everyone living in areas with poor air quality are guaranteed their right to clean air?

> Areas identified as leading contributors to air pollution include the burning of fossil fuels, agricultural waste, industrial production and transportation. Yet not all of these can simply be remedied by design.

In large, densely populated metropolitan areas, is there a way we can tackle poor air quality by providing symbiotic solutions harnessing technology with nature?

INSIGHT What is to blame. Human demand or careless planning?

> Education is crucial in helping current and future generations evaluate and access their life choices and to recognise their own personal impact on the environment.

Is it possible to provide a visual representation of the effect that air pollution has on us, the immediate and wider environment? Is there merit in the shock treatment and exposing naivety and complacency in today’s society?

INSIGHT

Multiple factors contribute to differing levels of poor air quality, so how can a cost-effective solution be designed that tackles as many of those issue as possible?

Can local animosity impact the delivery of a solution? Is there a way to harness cultural values, population dynamics and local economies?

> The Plan... The UK has one of the highest smartphone penetration rates in the world, with over 80% using one. Result being public telephone kiosks are largely obsolete. There are 73,000 around the UK, mostly in high density cities.

The plan is to re-purpose these kiosks into air filtration hubs.

The cost will be met by auctioning off designated boxes to private investors.

Their contribution will be acknowledged by a plaque.

The balance will be met via a Defra Grant initiative delivered via local councils.

Complaints from irritated eyes, headaches, sore throats, asthma and fatigue diminish.

Plants absorb sunlight, more accurately, 50% is absorbed and 30% is reflected. This helps create a more temperate climate.

There are 73,000 telephone kiosks in the UK. 8,000 are set to be re-purposed by a BT initiative leaving 65,000 left available for other enterprises.

Plant matter and living walls act as a sound barrier. Living Walls absorbing 41% more sound than a traditional facade, a reduction in up to 8dB.

> Problem... Cities coexist with dangerous levels of CO² emissions, created by advances in technology without a conscious consideration to the detrimental effect that it has on our ecosystem. With air pollution being the world’s number one health risk in the 21st Century, the entire world populous is at risk.

> Process... Qualitative analysis, observation and research into society’s advancement in the last 50 years has provided key insights into how air pollution is worsening at an exponential rate.

Human design and decision making can be held responsible and accountable. However by investigating those factors a decision to reverse engineer now redundant infrastructure was identified.

If we seek to “make more”, we exacerbate the problem, by reengineering the current, we improve!

VISION

Clean air should be considered a human right.

> Proposal... With public telephone kiosks becoming obsolete due to the advancement in modern technology, they lie dormant in dense city landscapes. The proposal is to re-purpose the kiosks as air filtration hubs, utilising all their infrastructure for monitoring, educating and importantly, minimising harmful pollution.

CONTEXT 14

> The Social Issue... is countered by updating communities, who are typically unaware of the dangerous pollution levels surrounding them daily. The PurAir info system will be used to promote healthy living initiatives in addition to highlighting toxic hotspots that should be avoided. The aim being to cultivate a change in behaviour.

The Environmental Issue... is countered by placing PurAir hubs in strategic locations where high levels of air pollution have been identified: road junctions, rail platforms, high density public meeting places and busy commercial areas.

And with a living wall, using local plant species, integrated into the hub, there is a reintroduction of a naturally occurring air filter in an environment where 75% of plant matter is lost to urban development.

Educate, Inform, Improve... PurAir is a product designed to serve everyone, through education via an integrated screen which displays air quality values in real time.

Delivering information on the local area, inclusive events, and identifying pollution hotspots, whilst providing a platform for local artists and communities to display artwork and linked campaign material. And finally, to improve air quality levels in the surrounding area creating a cleaner environment to be enjoyed by all.

The Product... is built using existing infrastructure and refining it to create a clean air filtration hub. The addition of a large solar panel aims to offset the power supply required creating a more efficient closed loop system. Excess electricity that is generated can be stored and utilised during nightime operations.

An easy open front maintenance door grants you access to the inner workings of the PurAir Filter. Once the casing is moved out of the way you will be able to change both the HEP and Carbon Filter with minimal hassle whilst also being able to access the electrical box located at the rear of the casing.

PurAir works by sucking in the ‘dirty air’ through the bottom grates allowing the living wall to absorb particle matter Pm10 and above. The smaller air particles are filtered and expelled through a two tiered vent system at the top of the casing.

DETAIL

A layered locking system means that both filters are securely held around the central air filter column. Both filters work in unison with polluted air passing through the HEP filter before reaching the Active Carbon filter. The clean air is then sucked into the central air column before passing through a statically charged fan.

Industrial Home Renovator Cordless Power Drill

> During the Covid 19 pandemic many countries have been placed under some form of lock down or restriction of movement. This has caused a rapid and sizeable increase in demand for home improvements.

Now more than ever there has been the demand for a power drill which has the ability to handle the 5 minute DIY job to the comprehensive one month home renovation project.

> Home improvement and DIY has been a growth market for years, but since the Covid Pandemic with lockdown rules, there has been a substantive rise in home renovations, as they have become multifunctional environments encompassing offices and education hubs. Coupled with tax incentives within the UK property market, which has fuelled sales and purchases, many people are looking to invest in their homes for multiple reasons, not least a sense of achievement, and so are undertaking projects themselves.

INSIGHT > Online sales of DIY products in the first week of lockdown rose by a staggering 50%. Year on year sales for building materials and paint are over 35% and tool investment accounts for a 15% increase on the same period the previous year. It would appear we genuinely are a nation of DIY enthusiasts.

> With multiple tools suppliers on the market catering for every price range, the choice can be overwhelming.

Numerous companies have specifically designed ranges for the home ‘DIY-er’, capitalising upon that growth market. Yet whilst these tools appeal on price point, they typically lack reliability and longevity of use. As a result, your initial investment could require a swift upgrade to a professional or trade standard model. And all to erect some shelving!

'READY FOR THE DIY REVOLUTION' 27

> Westie is a 25 year old self-employed decorator and general builder living in London. He started by undertaking the occasional job at home before contracting himself out. He has an eye for detail and is passionate about delivering high quality finishes. For those investing in their homes or refashioning WFH areas, and who have the capital to spend, acquired by no longer commuting or paying for sandwich lunches, yet are not keen to test their own DIY skills, they can turn to Westie.

With a captive and growing market and with a reputation for delivering quality workmanship that leads to recommendations, Westie has had to quickly evaluate the variety of tools on the market. There are too many to differentiate apart from their price point, and more importantly, limited selection for versatile transitional tools.

'THERE'S A NEW DRILL ON THE BLOCK'

> Problem... Despite multiple products on the market, there is a limited number of tools that are flexible, assisting in the completion of a small DIY project but equally valuable for extensive industrial style renovations. Consumers are typically faced with the purchase of a cheap under-powered drill, or investing in an expensive high-spec product, where numerous features will be redundant to actual use. There is a gap in the market for a high quality, professionally attractive tool.

> Process... Qualitative analysis, observation and research into how the ongoing trend for home renovation has coincided with the growth of power tool purchases. Some brands have released multiple ranges of tools for domestic and professional use but typically, and to ensure consumer spend translates to their market-share, the products have marginal differences in spec.

Yet, they are enough to present the consumer with the possibility of purchasing two different drills to achieve outcomes that don’t.

VISION

'Making nothing a maybe, but everything a certainty. '

> Proposal... The aim is to design a cordless power drill which uses an 18V battery pack that is safe and comfortable to use and delivers powerfully and effectively whether the task be a small DIY one or, a multi-faceted industrial project. The drill will need to house multiple and interchangeable drill bits in order that a variety of works from basic carpentry to masonry can be completed to a professional standard.

> The Product... The Industrial Home Renovator ‘IHR’ is manufactured using high quality Glass Reinforced Plastic, which is injection moulded in two parts to create both halves of the product. The soft touch over moulded handles are created from Thermoplastic Elastomer ‘TPE’, which provides the grip needed when using the tool.

The IHR is a unrivalled platform. With a next generation Portescap Brushless Motor as well as a rechargeable Lithium Ion 18V battery, its produced to a quality far exceeding that of DIY products.

The IHR battery offers a 1.3 amp hour battery capacity with both 14.4V and 18V platforms. A 60 minute charge time is achieved with a IHR series DC18WA battery charger.

DETAIL

The IHR features a 0-800rpm no load speed 20mm key-less chuck with 2 mechanical gears and 12 torque settings.

A smart feature that the IHR has is a small slot located under the rear pistol grip that allows you to store a quick-to-access drill bit. A small magnet as well as a brace keeps the bit safely stored as you work but also allows you almost instant interchange of a new drill bit as your work progresses.

> With more and more people seeking an escape from the monotony or pace of everyday life, as well as a chance to recharge ‘batteries’ in a natural environment, the demand for high performance outdoor products has been exponential. With the traditional ‘grab and go’ bag or rucksack typically having limited volume quickly filled by basic necessities, there has been minimal space to add a standard cooler.

Is there a way to design a low profile product which allows us to enjoy a refreshing beverage when we reach the summit, and enjoy that sense of fulfilment?

> Introducing Miru, an innovative drinks cooler that is designed for those who love the great outdoors, look for every opportunity to explore, and create memories through their adventures.

With limited products on the market that genuinely keep drinks cool for long periods and don’t reduce your carrier to a damp mass sitting on your back as you endeavour to fulfil your goals, look to Miru.

Good hydration ensures all our bodily functions occur as normal. You can’t achieve your goals if your physical fitness is compromised.

> Inspiration... When it came to creating Miru, we looked for inspiration from geo-physical elements and minimalist design.

Escaping to mountains elicits a sense of calm and perspective as you draw strength from geological giants. Hiking through forests and encountering rough terrain provides challenges and requires adaptation. Miru needed to be a product that resonated with all adventurers and reflected the simple philosophy of nature providing nurture, and sustainability being at the heart of their experiences.

DIRECTION > In order to maximise the appeal of the product, several concepts were generated, with small but individual features defining them from one another.

With the shape of the core can being both taller and slimer than the conventional 330ml on the market, all concepts shared the common attribute of space reduction. Such development allowed for greater creativity in producing a streamlined, easily transportable product that was highly functional, hardwearing and aesthetically attractive.

> Problem... With a limited market of products that genuinely keep drinks cold for prolonged periods, the reality has been the consumption of a lukewarm, at best, beverage at the end of a challenging physical journey. Whilst hydration may be achieved, enjoyment most likely isn’t! And whilst there are continuous advances in technology to counter such problem, there is minimal choice of product that actually applies and delivers it in way that is instantly appealing to the consumer.

> Process... Qualitative analysis, observation and research into consumer behaviour from their choice of adventure to the equipment they pack and the performance expectation they have of it, provided clear insight into optimal requirements. The study of products available and the evaluation of their workings, mechanical or otherwise, provided definition to the proposed solution.

VISION

Technology shouldn’t be what holds us back

> Proposal... In addition to the genuine value of the product, the delivery of that uber cool and utterly refreshing drink, it also needed to meet the space criteria. That it would be slimline, and take up minimal space in a regulation use day sack of approximately 30 litres total capacity.

> David is a 27 year old explorer living in the Highlands of Scotland. He has been a passionate and curious adventurer since a young age. And now, having exhausted the challenges of his national environment, he wants to venture further afield and look to discover and challenge himself in different terrains and enjoy stunning scenery around the globe.

Having grown up within a family with a firm love and appreciation for the outdoors, where any spare moment or holiday was filled by an adrenaline stimulating activity typically combining long hikes and climbing expeditions, David looked to share his experiences with others. At the age of 24 he started a personal blog. He wanted to encourage others to explore the natural beauty that surrounds us, both near and far-flung. He also wanted to use it to articulate his thoughts on global warming and climate change and to advocate personal responsibility for leading a more sustainable lifestyle.

The Product... is built using existing high grade aluminium with a TPE-s over-mould grip.

Most of the internal components have been 3rd party sourced such as the heat sink, fan unit and the PCB. The two Li-Ion batteries have been designed to be as thin and compact as possible. The internal work-horse of components all neatly bolt together in a tower like structure.

A trip sleeve design with a PS centre prevents hot air from entering and excess cold air from escaping from the cooling cylinder. A quad bolt joining system prevents the sleeves from coming apart during use but also allows for quick and efficient maintenance.

The lower vent system provides direct air flow to the fan unit whilst allowing hot air to exit quickly from the heat sink. And, with the PCB also being located at the base of the unit, there is minimal risk of overheating.

DETAIL

When it comes to maintenance, the ‘tower’ style assembly ensures the entire unit can be removed as one whole part. Screw fixtures join all the component together ensuring ease and simplicity when replacing parts.

A maintenance hatch in the bottom is secured by four small screws which are hidden by a rubber ring which can be removed using a finger. The rubber ring also provides core stability to the cooler when placed upright. Entry via the bottom hatch grants you access to the PCB to replace or solder any faulty electrics.

> As a conscious effort to self-evaluate and take personal accountability for our carbon footprint took hold in the latter part of the last decade, so did growth in the electric vehicle ‘EV’ market. In 2019 they comprised a record 2.5% of the global light vehicle market, and it appeared that consumers had finally accepted and indeed started to embrace the green revolution when it came to transport.

This was mirrored by governments, metropolitan and city councils advocating wholesale conversion of public transport serving the wider population.

Car manufacturers have increased development of models in order to appeal to the varying needs of consumers and have substantially expanded global production. And yet, the infrastructure to support such growth has not kept pace, with a noticeable lack of charging points, most especially in the domestic market.

> Welcome to the Opulus EVC-1.

Paris, December 2015 paved the way for the implementation of the largest single combined effort to reduce carbon emissions in history, when 196 countries signed a global accord. Europe is leading the charge in banning sales of fossil fuel vehicles, with ambitious targets being set by the UK, Ireland, Denmark, and The Netherlands amongst others in not only forbidding sales of passenger vehicles, including light commercial, but also hybrids by 2035.

So, with the demise of the CO² emitting vehicle market comes the rise of the EV market.

Whilst applied technology is determining rapid manufacture of EVs, the infrastructure to support the growth is unequal. The challenge is to develop and market an EV charger that will be at the heart of the electric revolution, and one that satisfies the growing demand from domestic users, most specifically those in metropolitan areas.

Opulus EVC-1 will reflect in design and manufacture its own carbon neutral credentials, with all materials being sourced from sustainable mines and waste having minimal CO² impact. This next generation domestic EVC will mirror its user’s commitment to ethical living.

INSIGHT > The long-term business strategy ‘Creating the New’ is based on the core belief that through ethical sustainable design we have the power to change lives.

The core beliefs become especially relevant when viewed in the context of social and geo-political implications and their influence on designing for future markets and consumers.

Producing sustainable green-credential products should not just be about gaining a competitive advantage. Companies across the globe should consider it a fundamental obligation in the way they do business.

> The strategy of Opulus was one of: Using materials that didn’t have a geological or socioeconomic impact when it came to extraction.

Processes that either had low energy consumption or were able to utilise recovered energy gained via the recycling phase.

Use pre-existing manufacturing processes that provide for mass production of parts in order to be both commercially and economically viable.

During product assembly to limit the number of permanent joining processes in order to substantially aid product disassembly at the end-of-life phase.

Intuitive design that ensures compatibility with numerous car manufacturers together with optimal use by the maximum number of consumers.

DIRECTION > Inspiration ‌ The idea for the design and form for the EVC-1 came from concept creations and the next generation of super cars. It felt important to take a futuristic approach to its shape and user experience. Creating a sustainable user-to-product relationship was paramount in the early phase of the design process and would also help determine both brand recognition and success. The EVC-1 encompasses and showcases modern day design in a fast-paced technology driven society.

Protect the Planet

> Problem... Whilst road users around the globe accept that EVs are here to stay and represent not only a growth market, but also ensure recognition of a move towards ‘clean travel’, many are discouraged from making the switch from diesel or petrol due to the scarcity of charging points. In mid 2019, the network in the UK was described as ‘patchy’. Department of Transport states ‘80% of charging is done at home’ but for drivers in cities who do not have access to off street parking, this serves as a major deterrent to invest.

> Process... A detailed observation of city and suburban infrastructure created a picture of the substantial problems being faced when trying to deliver a truly accessible EV charging network. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of primary and third-party manufacturers revealed the underlying negatives related to EV purchase, despite enthusiasm from consumers, and the costs associated with scaling up a comprehensive nationwide network of EV charging points.

“The time is right for electric cars in fact the time is critical.”

> Proposal... Based upon a clear identification of the differences, limitations and performance ratings of industrial versus domestic charging points currently available on the market, the aim of the EVC-1 is to provide a blended model. > The Product... The EVC-1 is manufactured using high quality extruded aluminium which forms the skeleton frame, and injection moulded ABS plastic which makes up the side panelling, grip and accessories. A smart light system is integrated into the charger together with an interactive display to provide visual feedback. This will ensure the user is able to monitor and evaluate charging capability dependent upon vehicle utilisation.

A tethered unit negates the need to carry cables. The actual charging cable is stored within a protective central housing with a built in retention.

A detailed display is activated when the charger is removed from its housing socket allowing you to change or edit charge settings to your personal preference or differing vehicle usage. Details related to the speed of charging can also be manipulated.

A type 2 charger is provided as standard with the option to convert to type 1. The compatible infrastructure also provides for a ‘fast charge’ option.

DETAIL

The aluminium skeleton frame which comprises the core structure can be quickly disassembled to allow ease of access to the internal mechanics and for replacement of the ABS side panelling.

The chargers ‘need to access’ internals are housed in the top casing, which is easily accessible by removing four screws. The screws are hidden by magnetic disks which can only be removed by a specialist key, issued to maintenance staff. This is a specific anti-tamper design.
