Excellence Award Descriptions Accounting Student Award This award recognizes a college accounting student for their commitment to success in the accounting field. The recipient has demonstrated leadership skills, involvement in an accounting or business club and contributions to the community.

Accounting Educator Award This award recognizes an accounting or business educator for their contributions in academia and the accounting profession. The recipient has demonstrated innovative techniques in teaching and motivating students.

Young Professional Award This award recognizes an individual age 35 or under who serves as an emerging and dynamic leader in the accounting profession. The recipient has demonstrated involvement within the community, has been engaged in one or more professional organizations and has served as an example for others entering the profession.

CPA in Public Accounting Award This award recognizes an individual who is a CPA working in public practice. The recipient has demonstrated significant achievements that have contributed to the success and growth of a firm.

Business & Management Award This award recognizes an individual working in business and management. The recipient has demonstrated blending information technology, financial decision-making and progressive management techniques that have helped a business move forward.

Diversity & Inclusion Impact Award This award recognizes an individual who champions diversity and inclusiveness in the accounting profession. The recipient has demonstrated impactful contributions through organization initiatives, engagement in mentoring or coaching programs or promoted diversity initiatives through other organizations.

Distinguished Career Award This award recognizes an individual for their outstanding achievements and efforts throughout their career. The recipient has demonstrated exemplary leadership and ongoing commitment of service to advance the accounting profession, the WICPA and the community.

Accounting Student Award Hannah Nale

am honored to be recognized by the WICPA as an outstanding accounting student. When I first started college, I did not know what I wanted my career to look like or how to get there. I ultimately ended up in a dual-degree program and had the privilege of completing four internships in different areas of accounting. It has been a crazy journey, and I have met so many amazing professionals and peers along the way who guided me through my academic endeavors.

Being recognized for the hard work and late nights that I have put into my education is very exciting, and I can’t wait to begin my career as a certified public accountant.

Accounting Educator Award Ada Duffey, CPA

I

am honored to be the recipient of this award.

My parents were both grade school teachers.

When I was young, I told them I was not going to be a teacher and that I was going into business.

As it turned out, the first business I owned for 15 years was a training company. After going back to school for a master’s degree, my second career is now teaching. Starting off in a second career eight years ago without having any connections was intimidating for me. I had to build up a whole new network. This award lets me know I have achieved a level of success.

I encourage my students to consider accounting as a career. I often introduce them to different professionals within the industry. I also expose them to various accounting software. I am aware of a handful of former students who are either currently CPAs or studying for the CPA Exam.

Many of them have been guest speakers in my classes. As a result of their hard work, they succeed. It is an honor to have been their first accounting professor.

I am very grateful for this recognition.

Young Professional Award Thomas Carini, CPA

am greatly honored to receive the Young Professional Award from the WICPA. I attribute my enthusiasm for professional development and community involvement to the support of my family, college professors and colleagues.

I have had the privilege of beginning my career at Deloitte, a firm that strives for excellence in client service and supports community service in several capacities. There are many colleagues and leaders at the firm who have supported and continue to support my development as a professional in accounting. This inspires me to not only focus my attention on mentoring those new to the profession in hopes of their future success, but also to seek out opportunities in the community for educating the students who are the future of our profession. I am excited to take part in the future of accounting with innovations in technology and dedicated young professionals working to advance the profession.

I would like to thank the WICPA for selecting me to receive this award and for their continued efforts to enhance the community and development of accounting professionals throughout Wisconsin.

am truly honored and humbled to receive this WICPA Excellence Award. I have been blessed and nurtured by others in the profession who selflessly gave of themselves to invest in the careers of others, including my own. I have learned much from them, not only about the tax laws, but about public accounting in its entirety and the lives behind the numbers. My mentors and colleagues have shown genuine care for people and families as they serve their clients.

In turn, I have always felt it was important to give back to the profession by serving on WICPA committees, teaching seminars and college courses, and writing about the latest tax developments.

There are so many ways to reach out — both personally and professionally — to make an impact on the lives and careers of others.

I hope the younger members of the profession will embrace the opportunities they enjoy now and the sacrifices that others have made for them. I trust they, too, will adopt a servant’s heart of giving to those who follow in their footsteps.

Business & Management Award Katherine Hauser, CPA, CGMA

am honored to be selected as a recipient of a WICPA Excellence Award. Starting out, I never imagined doing anything other than being an auditor, but life rarely happens as we plan it. Having the opportunity over the past two decades to try different positions in completely different industries is not something I would give up. Enjoying what you do makes all the hard work worth it.

I greatly appreciate all the support from my family, friends and colleagues — present and former — who have been so instrumental in helping me achieve everything that I have achieved. And to the staff and members of the WICPA, thank you for allowing me a chance to give something back to the profession.

Diversity &Inclusion Impact Award Stacy Stinson, CPA, MBA

I

am honored to accept the Diversity & Inclusion Impact Award on behalf of my National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) family — who paved the way for me to make my path in this great profession — and my daughters, Makayla and Sydney, who make me want to build a better tomorrow for them.

My journey into this profession started in Accounting 1 and 2 at Rufus King High School in Milwaukee. Behind the scenes, NABA was thinking of me and my future.

NABA members, my high school teacher and classmates started NABA’s first high school chapter. NABA’s motto is “Lifting as We Climb.” In the early ‘90s, I was on the WICPA/NABA Minority Issues Task Force, charged with looking at the changing diverse landscape of corporate America. Today, we are still committed to improving the CPA pipeline with diverse candidates from the Young Entrepreneurial Scholars (YES) program for high school students, mentorship programs and scholarship opportunities.

However, we still have more work to do.

Diversity and inclusion (along with equity and belonging) will succeed when each person is courageous and builds meaningful relationships with others who may be different, regardless of the differences.

I now strive to build those personal connections with my Concordia students who are entering the workforce. We understand the assignment. I challenge everyone to join me on this journey.

Distinguished Career Award Andrew Holman, CPA

R

eceiving this award is the culmination of my winding and rewarding journey as a CPA. I was a latecomer to public accounting. I started my career as a community service worker and then worked for a nonprofit for more than 12 years. Although my late father was a co-founder of our firm, RitzHolman CPAs, I never thought I wanted to be a CPA. He convinced me, however, to get a second degree in accounting, and I passed the CPA Exam while working at the nonprofit. Soon, organizations started asking me to help them with their accounting needs.

In those days, the accounting profession did not have a focus in the nonprofit sector, so I decided to transition to public accounting. I am proud of the work I did to help my firm develop a major nonprofit practice in response to a growing need. I also started teaching accounting workshops for nonprofits in the community and at UW–Milwaukee. As a CPA, I can use the profession’s hard skills to help many organizations.

I came into public accounting in a nontraditional way and encourage other latecomers to do the same. It is a great honor to be recognized by the WICPA for my career achievements.
