Certified seed potatoes ensure you get high quality, disease-free seed There is a saying that potatoes should be planted by Good Friday. This saying probably came about because many older potato varieties could take up to 120 days to mature.

If you want one of these long season varieties, such as German Butterball, then you likely will want to plant as soon as the frost is out of the ground. A shorter 70-day variety such as Yukon Gold does not have to be planted quite as early. Either way, it is good to know your seed source.

Seed potatoes sold in North Dakota are supposed to be certified. Seed certification is a seed quality verification process. It is different than an organic certification which is a program that verifies agronomic practices. A large part of seed potato certification has to do with disease testing so you know you are getting the best quality seed.

Of all the vegetables we grow, it seems potatoes have a never ending list of diseases which they can succumb to.

Many of these are fungal, some are viral but they all equal a frustrating season. Results at a minimum will reduce yields, but often the crop will fail. A good quality disease-free seed source is the best way to start the season.

Some people are able to store their potatoes long enough so they have enough in the spring to replant. This isn’t always advised as the potato could have been exposed to a pathogen during the growing season. A seed potato is not a conventional seed; it is instead a tuber. Because of this, it is living plant tissue which can carry the disease to the following season leading to a failure in the garden. Also, many potato diseases can be spread to tomatoes, peppers and eggplant.

Some people think they can just go to the grocery store for their seed potatoes. Use of these potatoes for seed is not at all advised. First, they never went through a certification program because they were never JASON GOLTZ is a North Dakota intended to be sold as seed.

Also, because they are not produced as seed potatoes, they are handled differently. Potatoes go into dormancy when harvested and groceries handle their potatoes to encourage dormancy; this is why you rarely see sprouting potatoes in the store.

Planting grocery store potatoes which have been handled in this way will yield disappointing results. They will come out of dormancy slowly and erratically. They may be dormant in the garden long enough to succumb to disease or predation. Either way, the results will be disappointing.

Potatoes are common in most vegetable gardens and for good reason. They provide a tremendous amount of nutrition in a small package. It doesn’t take a lot of space to provide some good nutrition for the family. The only way to take advantage of those traits is to start the season right with quality disease-free seed.

Wallpaper MAKE A PERSONAL STATEMENT WITH

Wallpaper gives you the fun, bold patterns that you could never achieve with paint Finally, you have decided to remove all that ’90s wallpaper and freshen up your rooms. You could use a new color of paint or opt for one of the beautiful new wallpapers on the market.

The problem — how do you remove the wallpaper without damaging the wall?

There are several options including steaming or spraying with chemicals. Which method you use to take down wallpaper will often depend on the product. Some papers can be stripped dry, such as commercial or fabric-backed wallpaper, while others will need a removal solution. Any damage to the wall will also depend on how the wallpaper was installed. Removing wallpaper on a wall that wasn’t primed can cause some damage to the wall’s texture or the drywall.

Professionals use a concentrated remover solution mixed with water. The solution dissolves the adhesive wallpaper backing, making it easy to take off. Before starting, gather your tools.

■ One or two 3-inch to 6-inch broad knives ■ Ladder ■ Scoring tool ■ Garden sprayer ■ Plastic sheet or drop cloth to cover the floor

Mix the remover solution with hot water. Start by spraying a small test area to see the reaction. If the solution does not penetrate the paper, use the scoring tool to make tiny punctures in the wallpaper. This allows the solution to saturate the back of the paper. Be careful not to press too hard or it may gouge the drywall.

You may need to apply the solution several times to get all the paper off. Once the paper and backing are removed, spray the mixture on the wall one last time and scrape off any missed spots.

Wash down the wall and let it dry a few days.

Now that you have removed all the old wallpaper, you may decide to wallpaper again. There are many wallpapers available today easy to install, clean and remove. Vinyl wall coverings and solid sheet vinyl are most durable in areas such as laundry rooms, bathrooms and kitchens.

Some tips for hanging wallpaper:

■ Make sure walls are smooth and clean Repair nail holes and patch work should be sanded ■ smooth a good quality primer and paint the wall — ■ Use this assures the paper will adhere well and removes

Line up the edge of the paper on your starting line and smooth in place. Smooth out bubbles with a paper hanging brush or dry paint roller. Trim away excess paper with a broad knife on the top and bottom of the piece. Continue throughout the room.

Wallpapering is a time-consuming task. But after going through all the work, you can stand back and admire your beautiful transformation.

To find a starting point, begin on a flat wall with no switches and doorways. Use a plumb line or laser to make a straight line. Measure the height of your wall and add 4 inches to the length to allow for overhang. Unroll the paper and make a straight line with an “L” square. Cut the paper on the line.

If the wallpaper is pre-pasted, run the piece through a trough of water to activate the paste. “Book” the wallpaper by folding it in thirds with the pasted side in and let set 2–3 minutes. If you need to paste the wallpaper, choose the

Century farm turned folk art school and music venue expands and diversifies to last well into the next century

ary Jo Schmid and husband Brent Larson are excited about the new event space and living quarters they’ve added on to their home. “The Farmhouse” has already been used for live music performances and classes through their folk art school. They’ve created a more private apartment for themselves upstairs, too, rather than the open loft they formerly used.

Crooked Lane Farm sits between Colfax and Abercrombie, North Dakota, and has spurred an economic ecosystem in the central Red River Valley. A winery has popped up next door, an alpaca farm is nearby, an apiary is about five miles north, and another couple may open a small bed and breakfast at their farm.

The couple’s property is a Centennial Farm on Larson’s side of the family, and is nestled up against the Wild Rice River. Wildlife are always visiting the tree-lined property and some people visit just to sit outside and watch the birds.

Schmid and Larson are all smiles when they talk about the wonderful community they live in.

“We’re going into our seventh summer of concerts,” Schmid said. “We started out thinking this would be our little retirement project and it’s gone … POOF.”

And by that, she means the popularity of the place grows every year. More and more couples are choosing it as their wedding and reception location, thanks to an enormous renovated barn built in 1943 that was moved several miles to the property a few years ago. It offers a beautiful rustic backdrop for customized events and seats 250 guests in the hayloft, which is accessible by stairs and a small elevator for easy access.

The south lawn gives a woodland backdrop with two acres of rolling lawn and is easily accessible for any event.

A pole barn is also available and can seat 100 guests, or 200 for a dance.

Six $5 concerts featuring folk, ethnic, classical and bluegrass music are scheduled for this summer, and one includes a classic car show exhibit. A food truck and beverage sales are offered at each performance as well. The concerts, which began with about 40 guests, now attract up to 200 each time.

The intent of the concerts is to celebrate local musicians and recognize their contributions to preserving the area’s rich musical heritage. The concerts bring music to the rural community and the surrounding region, the couple remarks on their website.

With the expansion of The Farmhouse, the couple wants to offer a four-season approach, especially with the number of weddings being booked. Now bridal parties have more space and privacy to get ready, there is a full kitchen available for guest use, and Larson doesn’t get kicked out of his home on wedding day, Schmid joked.

“Now we have the ability to have over 100 people in that section and flow into the kitchen and living space, and there’s plenty of room to move around,” Schmid said. “The upstairs loft, where we used to have our bed, can now be used for brides and other people here for special events.

“We’re stepping off into some different things this year with this space.”

They will do a cork craft class with the winery and a wine stomp in the fall with them.

“I think we’re seeing our growth with being able to have a climate-controlled area we can work in,” she added.

The addition has a fireplace with beams salvaged from Larson’s grandfather’s barn and great-grandfather’s house.

Old family photos hang on the walls along with historical photos of Richland County and huge plat map pages of the area from 1912.

“My family came here in 1912,” Larson explained as he pointed to Section 25 on the plat map. “The name isn’t on here yet, but we’re now a Century Farm, just barely.”

One idea they have is to create a space that will allow cold weather weddings.

“We want to take our patio and create little warming sorts of fires around that and have a winter wedding area,” Schmidt explained. “People can go all the way out to the wedding site, stay on the porch with the warming heaters or even stay indoors and look through the windows.”

When the couple opened up Crooked Lane Farm, it was touted also as a folk art school. They promoted many different classes at the property, including making barn quilts.

With the addition of music and events, the classes focus has dropped back a bit, but they want to get back into it.

“We have our marquetry class and a birding class,” she said. “We’re starting to get back into the classes again.”

The couple said the expansion and popularity has caused them to realize they may need to hire some help at some point — it’s a lot of work for two people, and Larson farms their property as well.

“We’re beginning to need other people to take us on to the next step,” she said.

Agriculture companies have also been coming to the farm to hold conferences and meetings, and last year they

planted a wheat crop with Bayer. This year Bayer will be back plus the North Dakota Soybean Council will have seven seed plots on their property, which will act as an educational resource for visitors, Larson explained.

“That’s a big step. It will be a fun experience,” Schmid said. They will also be the site for a national conference, which they’re thrilled about.

She said the business has turned into much more than they had initially imagined.

“It’s been really fun, it’s been really cool,” she smiled.

Aamodt creates lasting ties through the art of music and has nurtured a family of students

youth choir has many different members. There are the participants who quickly and completely commit to the work and the music.

They are followed by the participants who need a little longer to engage. Nevertheless, they are willing to make an effort. Finally, there are the participants who never gain any meaning from what they’re doing or what they’re singing.

“You have to risk being vulnerable,” Dean Aamodt said.

“You have to say, ‘I’m part of this group. You can rely on me.’”

There may be 50 instances of a participant who never turns the corner and tries. On the other hand, the 51st student could turn around and surprise Aamodt, their peers and especially themselves.

“I love to hear in the students’ voices or see in their faces the joy of doing something really well,” Aamodt said.

or in the rotunda of the Richland County Courthouse in Wahpeton. It could be during a full-scale concert like those held at St. John’s Catholic Church or the auditorium at Wahpeton High School. It could be in a smaller setting like caroling at Zimmerman Elementary, Wahpeton.

Either way, it cannot be hidden.

“You don’t need a college degree to look at someone’s face and see if they’re just really loving what they’re doing,” Aamodt said. “That’s what I get my most satisfaction from.”

Aamodt, 62, teaches music for Wahpeton Public Schools. This includes four choirs through the high school’s vocal program and a kindergarten class at Zimmerman Elementary.

“I have them when they start in kindergarten and finish as seniors. It’s a unique situation I’ve grown to love,” Aamodt said.

Having joined Wahpeton Public Schools in August 2009, Aamodt is not yet in the situation where one of his kindergarten students grew up to become one of his high school students.

“The eighth graders (in the 2018-19 school year) are coming up in the fall,” he said. “Hopefully they have some fond memories.”

Aamodt considers the opportunity to work with students of all ages a privilege. He feels he is lucky to have a job he loves, in a great community with support from school administrators.

“These kids want to be successful. When you give them that chance, they want more. It’s because they want to feel good. Who doesn’t want to feel good?” Aamodt asked.

Aamodt’s life has taken him to places ranging from the Red River Valley to the West Coast.

Conrad and Elvira Aamodt raised three sons, Joel, Kim and Dean. The baby of the family, Dean Aamodt is nearly 10 years younger than his brothers.

“My dad was a missionary aligned with the American Lutheran Church, which later became the Evangelical Lu-

theran Church in America,” Dean Aamodt said. “He had wanted to go to China and had studied Chinese, but in 1949 they closed the borders.”

Still wanting to serve, Conrad Aamodt eventually accepted the opportunity for missionary work in Japan. The family would Photo submitted Dean, center, with friends in Japan, spend 10 years overseas.

“It was a unique upbringing. I feel fortunate to have had it. I certainly feel comfortable in a metropolitan setting. We lived in the Tokyo area, which had 12 million people at the time. When we moved back, we lived in New Effington, South Dakota, which had a population of 250. It took a while to adjust,” Dean Aamodt said, laughing.

During Aamodt’s childhood, Tokyo hosted the 1964 Summer Olympics. He recalls watching a marathon runner carry the celebrated torch, as well as his dad accidentally locking the family out of their car.

“There was another episode during the Olympics,” Aamodt said. “We went to Tokyo because my dad was attending a pastors conference. We were touring around the swimming complex and these people thought we were Olympians. There are families who, to this day, probably think we were Olympians.”

In 1968, the Aamodts returned to America. Dean Aamodt recalls how a trip to Wahpeton for new clothing or a baseball glove was considered a big deal during his teenage years.

Another big deal — Aamodt’s life in music — was just beginning. Elvira Aamodt encouraged her son to sing hymns in church, which gave him confidence. In 1972, he was further inspired when participating in a multi-school choral festival directed by Tilford Kroshus.

“He came down and there was just so much energy.

There was singing like I never heard before. I thought, ‘I want to do what he’s doing,’” Dean Aamodt said.

In addition to Kroshus, Aamodt also credits Paul J. Christiansen for furthering his dedication to music.

Aamodt studied at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. Christiansen conducted the Concordia Choir for nearly 50 years.

“I have to give a big thank you to Tilford and Paul,” Aamodt said.

Following graduation, Aamodt taught for 12 years in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. Beginning in 1989, he taught in Temecula, California.

“We had three little kids at the time and stayed there for 20 years,” Aamodt said.

His children have gone in all sorts of directions, Aamodt explained. Daughter Brie is an interior designer in San Francisco. Son Jordan is a stay at home dad in Tallahassee, Florida. Youngest son Nelson works for Doosan Bobcat in Wahpeton.

Aamodt doesn’t regret having worked so long in California, but he did know that by 2009, it was time for a change.

“The kids had graduated from high school and I was looking to find work back here,” Aamodt said.

Having applied for work with Wahpeton Public Schools and Fargo South, Aamodt was offered the Twin Towns Area position.

No matter the state, Aamodt said, youth appreciate the beauty of music. He’s proud of teaching pieces ranging from the serious, classical and foreign to the lighthearted, popular and modern.

“Some of the favorite pieces that these kids have learned actually are the great masterpieces,” Aamodt said. “I always say to them, ‘You might not like this as first, or at the end. But you won’t know unless you give it a try.’”

Approximately 150 students are expected to participate in Wahpeton High School’s bands and choirs during the 2019-20 school year. An experienced educator like Aamodt is ready.

“We talk about engagement in education circles. When a student is engaged, they’re not thinking about what their boyfriend or girlfriend has texted them or what’s going to happen this weekend. They’re solely focused on the present, the task at hand. That’s how you get good,” he said.

Either directly or indirectly, Aamodt has a question for his students. Are they willing to do their best to get better or do they just want to be average?

“Most kids want to get better,” he said. “We don’t sound good some days. But we are here to work and help each other. We’re a family within this school. We depend on each other when we’re going to do our best.”

‘The Railing Guy’

It’s an unmistakable feeling.

Kevin Buckhouse, Breckenridge, Minnesota, has completed a custom ironwork metal railing project. The work may be his, but the project belongs to the customer.

“I feel I owe it to them,” Buckhouse said. “If they can dream it or think it, I can build it.”

The project is finished and it’s time for the customer to check it out. Buckhouse, 48, considers being able to impress clients one of his biggest accomplishments as a professional.

“When I can wow a customer — and you can just tell when they’re more than happy with it — that is personal satisfaction for me,” he said.

Buckhouse’s fiancée, Sally, can recognize the signs of a success.

“I can tell when he walks through the door,” she said. “I know when they loved it.”

Word of mouth pays off for Buckhouse’s custom ironwork metal railing business

Sometimes a customer doesn’t say a word. Their satisfaction in the work can either be obvious or muted. Inevitably, though, Buckhouse’s phone will ring.

“That customer passed my information along and gave me another referral,” he said.

Buckhouse is closing in on 30 years in the custom ironwork metal railing industry.

“My work is more customized than if I were building a bunch of cookie cutter styles like what you’d see for apartment buildings,” he said. “I deal more in a one-on-one with the customer and the contractor, rather than dealing with someone across the country. They’re sitting in an office arranging 800 railings for 10 apartment buildings.”

Buckhouse has created railings for apartment complexes in the past. It’s a

competitive market, he said.

“The bigger companies out there, they’re able to handle mass production. If they can make $5 from a railing and they’re doing 10,000 railings in a week, it adds up,” Buckhouse said.

Having a smaller operation doesn’t impede Buckhouse. From time to time, he has between one and four part-time employees.

“A lot of the work I try to do myself,” he said. “Working with the other contractors helps. They can say to me, the walls are done, so the railing’s got to go in. You’ve got four days to do it, so get in there and get down to work.”

Residences with Buckhouse’s railings include the Lance and Londa Darwin home in Wahpeton, the Neil and Kathy Crocker home in Breckenridge and the Ross and Jessie Uglem home in Oxbow, North Dakota.

ing for our new house was a great experience,” Jessie Uglem said. “Our home is in Oxbow but since I work in the Wahpeton-Breckenridge area, it was important to my husband and I that we use a local professional for our railing.”

Buckhouse immediately came to mind.

“I had seen his railings in homes I had listed and was impressed with

the quality and modern look,” Uglem said.

Buckhouse worked according to the Uglems’ schedule, allowing the home to be appraised as planned.

“He brought our vision to life,” Uglem said. “I would recommend him to anyone in the area who is building or remodeling a home.”

Positive and constant word of mouth has not only helped Buckhouse, it’s more or less the driving factor behind his success.

There is a domino effect. A satisfied client mentions Buckhouse’s work to friends, or even keeps Buckhouse in mind for future projects. It’s not unusual for him to follow up work in a residence with work on a summer home.

“I’m starting to get more business in the Fargo area,” Buckhouse said. “There are a few more people starting to hear about what I do.”

During the summer of 2018, Buckhouse worked outside the Twin Towns area. His assignments included buildings in Fargo and West Fargo, North Dakota, as well as Moor-

head and Fergus Falls, Minnesota.

Raised and educated in Breckenridge, Buckhouse first worked for Twin City Metals.

“I became the shop foreman after a year of working there,” he said. “I worked 10 years there, learning how to do the railings. I quit working there to pursue a different career, but the customers followed. They never really left.”

Simply put, everyone knew Buckhouse was “the railing guy” and kept calling to offer work.

“We’re a smaller community and I’ve got a name that’s easy to remember. Not only that, but I had plenty of built-in loyalty,” Buckhouse said.

Over the course of 28 years, Buckhouse has seen his share of interesting design ideas.

“I’ve built railings that have had nothing in them,” he said. “There have been crazy colors that had nothing to do with the house color or the interior trim. I’ll have a purple or a light green when there’s no green in the house at all. They just really wanted to have the railings be a focal point.”

Personalization of a project is always fun.

“We try to incorporate what a client does in their railing. If they have horses, we could include a horseshoe or something related to cowboys. They may have cattle, so we’ll have a cow.

It reflects their wishes and their wish can be anything,” Buckhouse said.

The biggest challenge, Buckhouse said, is being able to make that wish come to life in a way that also follows building codes. But when it works, it’s satisfying.

Buckhouse works year-round. In recent years, he’ll often have work booked six months in advance. It’s not unusual for him to be working on three assignments at once.

“There are not many people around who do this type of work,” he said.

“I’m filling a very specific niche.”

Today’s culture looks at natural skin as being beautiful skin

K

arissa Etten had her life planned. She loved working with makeup, so she planned to offer that sideline in a business here within the Twin Towns.

“I love, love, love makeup. I thought I wanted to work with makeup, but when that part of school started I found out that I really disliked doing other people’s makeup,” Etten said, especially when important events like weddings or prom happen. “There is just so much anxiety doing makeup for weddings. It’s a big moment, so you want them to love it and feet great in how they look,” she said.

So it turns out doing makeup for other people wasn’t her schtick. Etten soon discovered skin care and eventually became a certified esthetician.

The Foxhome, Minnesota, resident wanted to open her own business.

She started Skin Tight three years ago, which is located at 315 11th St. N., Wahpeton.

Etten wanted to bring a new business here and skin care was the perfect avenue because she wants everyone to feel beautiful in their skin.

tanning was the perfect way to highlight beautiful and radiant skin. They are now coming to Skin Tight to prevent more sun damage and repair their skin. Women Etten’s age want to prevent this damage from happening in the first place because today’s culture looks at natural skin as being beautiful skin, she said.

With three young children at home — Beck, 4, Briggs, 2, and Bowen, 10 months — the flexibility of owning her own business was crucial. Being the owner, she can set her own hours to be home when husband Kelly, a farmer, must go out in the field. She also works full time at City Brew Hall in Wahpeton.

The first few years offered a learning curve and built up clientele, but she had hoped Skin Tight would take off faster, Etten said, especially after the initial investment of equipment and top-of-the-line skin products, which added up quickly.

Her advice to other people looking to start this type of business is to buy slowly. “You don’t need the fancy stuff right away,” she said. “Start basic and build from there.”

PAMPER AND SPOIL Starting slow was not in the cards for Etten, since she wanted Skin Tight to be an experience meant to pamper and spoil. If she’s giving a facial, her treatment room is dark and cozy with fragrant candles scenting the air and warm blankets. If she’s doing a lash lift, the room will be bright and well lit.

“I am selling an experience. I want this to be luxurious. When customers walk in, I want them to be wowed by the overall experience,” Etten said.

Skin Tight offers facials, waxing, chemical peels, brow and lash tinting and dermaplaning. The treatment goal is to improve the quality of your skin.

Yes, beauty is more than skin deep, but skin is the first thing people see, so it’s important to look your best, she said.

In addition, skin is your first layer of defense against the outside world.

It can also give important clues to your overall health, while protecting your body in many ways, like providing a barrier to protect the body from bacteria and other possible environ-

mental hazards that can be dangerous to your health. It contains nerve endings that let you feel when an object is too hot or sharp, so you can quickly pull away.

Sweat glands and tiny blood vessels in your skin help to control your body temperature. Cells in your skin turn sunlight into vitamin D, which is important for healthy bones.

The goal of Skin Tight’s treatments is to not traumatize the skin. Dermaplaning and chemical peels are great ways to exfoliate the skin, Etten said. Dermaplaning actually uses a razor that resembles a surgical blade that sweeps back and forth to rid the skin of fine, downy hair on the face and remove dead skin cells. Removing these elements brightens the skin, Etten said.

The first time is to remove oils and makeup, while the second cleanse really removes the impurities.

A lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems — as well as increase the risk of skin cancer. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Apply sunscreen generously, and reapply every two hours — or more often if you’re swimming or perspiring.

Don’t smoke: Smoking makes your skin look older and contributes to wrinkles. Smoking narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of skin, which decreases blood flow and makes skin paler. This also depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients that are important to skin health.

Treat your skin gently: Daily cleansing and shaving can take a toll on your skin. To keep it gentle, limit bath time. Hot water and long showers or baths remove oils from your skin.

Limit your bath or shower time, and use warm — rather than hot — water. Strong soaps and detergents can strip oil from your skin. Instead, choose mild cleansers. To protect and lubricate your skin, apply shaving cream, lotion or gel before shaving. For the closest shave, use a clean, sharp razor. Shave in the direction the hair grows, not against it. Pat dry. After washing or bathing, gently pat or blot your skin dry with a towel so that some moisture remains on your skin.

Moisturize dry skin. If your skin is dry, use a moisturizer that fits your skin type. For daily use, consider a moisturizer that contains SPF.

Eat a healthy diet: A healthy diet can help you look and feel your best. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins.

The association between diet and acne isn’t clear — but some research suggests that a diet rich in fish oil or fish oil supplements and low in unhealthy fats and processed or refined carbohydrates might promote younger looking skin. Drinking plenty of water helps keep your skin hydrated.

Manage stress: Uncontrolled stress can make your skin more sensitive and trigger acne breakouts and other skin problems. To encourage healthy skin — and a healthy state of mind — take steps to manage your stress. Get enough sleep, set reasonable limits, scale back your to-do list and make time to do the things you enjoy.

INGREDIENTS:

1 lb. raw shrimp, peeled, deveined 1/2 lemon zested & juiced 1 clove minced garlic 1 T. finely chopped onion Salt & pepper to taste DIRECTIONS: Add all ingredients to a food processor and pulse until smooth. Form into equal size balls (about 6). Insert stick into the ball and mould into the shape of a hotdog.

Place on cookie sheet and chill until firm.

DIRECTIONS: Preheat deep fryer to 350 degrees.

Set aside 1 cup of flour for dredging, mix the rest of the ingredients. Dredge chilled “corn dogs” in flour, then dip into batter. Fry in hot oil for 3 minutes, drain on a paper towel. Serve with dippin’ sauce.

A headache is the sign that something in the body is broken A number of years ago, my friend was riding along with a friend in his pickup through the mountains of California.

Suddenly, steam started to come out from under the hood and a red light came on in the dash. My friend got a container and started to head to the small stream running near the road to get water for the radiator. The driver said, “No need. I can fix it here.” Whereupon he pulled a pair of wire cutters out of a tool box, reached under the dash and cut wire to the offending light. “Okay, it’s fixed,” he said.

Friends, that’s aspirin. Just as the warning light was a sign of a broken cooling system, just so is a headache the sign that something in the body is broken. And just as cutting a wire didn’t fix that pickup, neither will taking a pill fix the problem that caused the headache.

That’s why we say that headaches are not caused by an aspirin deficiency in the body. A headache is the body’s alarm system saying, “I’m broken.” Turning off the alarm will not make the cause go away. Would you continue to drive your car with a warning light cut off even though the motor was making noise?

The body is largely run by the autonomic nervous system. Nearly all functions of the body’s organs are controlled and regulated by this system. It connects all the organs with each other as only through the harmonious interaction of these organs does one have health. When one gets a headache, it often is not a problem with the head. It could be that the liver is diseased. Due to its nervous connection to the brain, one perceives this as a “headache.”

Causes and Remedies

DEHYDRATION By far and away the No. 1 cause of headaches is dehydration. The body is about 60 percent water but the brain is around 73 percent. It needs to be well-hydrated. The

immune, reproductive, digestive, nervous, muscular, endocrine, circulatory and indeed all body systems need adequate water. If not, one can get reduced function, pains, fatigue, and yes, headaches.

So let’s start with a large glass of water, not pop, coffee, beer, juice or tea. Water. Pure water. Your body will thank you. We see many headaches disappear in less than 15 minutes just by doing this. After having that nice glass of water, get up and get out. Go outside even in the winter for a 15 minute walk. The walking not only invigorates, it also equalizes the blood in our body, reducing pressure on the head and that headache might just clear right up.

LACK OF OXYGEN AND FRESH AIR Breathing old, stale air in an office or closed space is one of the fastest ways to get a headache. By continually rebreathing the body’s waste gases we enter into a toxic state.

Very simply, this is auto-intoxication. The body gives off digestive and metabolic waste every day. All 100 trillion cells give off waste solids, liquids and gases. But what if the body doesn’t properly and efficiently get rid of them? They start to back up in the system creating impure blood and the constipation of numerous body systems. This can register as a headache.

When doing a lot of computer and desk work, there is a congestion of the blood in the head. This unequal blood pressure in the body can cause a headache. ing. Think of the slightly clean ozone aroma after a thunder storm or a nice rain. Open the window or door and let in some fresh air. Or, go for a walk.

CAFFEINE This drug, found in so many beverages, causes a constriction of the blood vessels. When the drug wears off the vessels relax and expand. The body perceives these normal sized vessels as abnormal by their exerting outward pressure because of their enlarged state. Hence, a headache.

Taking in caffeine takes the pain away but, it reduces blood flow by the constriction of those vessels. Who wants that?

But quitting caffeine is a challenge. But this challenge can be overcome in about three days. You might have to suffer those days but it will be well worth it.

STRESS This causes a whole host of problems to occur. The body partially engages its fight or flight response when put under stress.

This means increased cortisol in the blood is produced by the adrenal glands. As a result one can have an increased heart rate, higher blood pressure, and more tense muscles as the body prepares to “do battle.”

This can cause headaches.

But how to get rid of stress? We’ve written on this before. In short, work to live and not live to work. Get sleep, get exercise, love yourself, love your neighbor, eat well and live a life of trust and faith. If any of this gets out of balance, stress comes.

INJURY Not just an injury to the head, but an injury, even years ago in the past especially to the muscular-skeletal system can cause headaches. We often think of a tension headache or headaches where it’s due to tight muscles in the shoulders, neck and head.

VISION Surprisingly, a large number of headaches are caused by having incorrect eyeglasses. If you suspect this, try going without glasses for a couple days to see if the headaches go away. See your doctor about adjusting your prescription and/or changing lens styles. Graduated bifocals look good but many have trouble adjusting to them and even when one gets used to them, a headache can result.

This is a huge unseen cause of headaches.

DIET For reasons too long to discuss here, food and drink often work as triggers to cause headaches, even migraines. Foods that cause allergies are causing headaches. So let’s list those foods: Alcohol, dairy (especially cheese), nightshades, citrus fruits, tree nuts, chocolate, eggs and shellfish. Try an elimination diet to find out which you are allergic to. Then, don’t eat them. Don’t take medicine and keep on eating them. Just avoid them altogether.

I can’t encourage you enough to first try a glass of water and a brisk walk. This may be revealing to you and your body will thank you.

BUYING OR BUILDING: Preplanning is key

Spring weather brings about many exciting changes — warmer climate, flowers springing up and projects you’ve been dreaming of over the winter months I often have the opportunity to help people reach their dreams of purchasing or building their own home. Buying an existing home compared to building has many aspects to it. Decisions, plans and the process of building a home are very exciting, yet time consuming. It can also be stressful if the right pre-planning is not done.

My job is to help clients pre-plan and think through the possible scenarios of the project. I have over 10 years of experience in this area and enjoy the time I spend with clients on their financing of the project.

If you’re dreaming, planning or in the midst of building your home, this might be helpful in the process. Our goal is taking some of the stress and uncertainty that can come with building. ▶ WHAT IS A CONSTRUCTION LOAN? A construction loan is a short-term loan that covers the costs of building or rehabilitating a home. It is different, however, than a traditional loan where you make monthly payments of principal and interest. Construction loans are structured like lines of credit — you will draw funds from the loan to pay contractors for their work and make interest-only payments during the building phase. When your home is complete, you will pay off the temporary construction loan with a long-term mortgage loan. This mortgage loan is sometimes referred to as an end loan. ▶ WHAT ARE THE CLOSING OPTIONS? A one-time close is offered and allows for rates to be locked in early in the loan process, in addition to protecting you from rising interest rates. A two-time close is also offered and has a low interest rate during the construction phase (with a mortgage loan being locked in at the current available market rate later) or securing a lower rate on your mortgage loan early with an extended lock up to 180 days.

Lender Tip: Begin by working with your lender to get pre-qualified. Establishing the budget and financial expectations will free you to enjoy the process of choosing plans and designing your new dream home. ▶ HOW MUCH WILL IT COST? When you begin to build a new home, you can estimate how long the project will take and what the costs will be, but you won’t know the final bill until everything is complete.

It’s not uncommon for a construction project to go over budget or take longer than anticipated, so it’s best practice to set aside extra funds to cover any overages in your project

above the approved loan amount.

Meeting with your lender and getting pre-qualified will help you put your project into context. You will establish the expectations for your budget and financial requirements for qualification. Once you have the budget and financial information, it will give you a good place to start when looking for a builder and choosing the perfect plans for your new dream home.

When applying for a construction loan you are pre-qualified for, consider both your construction phase financing and the end mortgage loan financing.

Most construction loans will require a minimum down payment from the borrower. Your construction loan amount along with your down payment are pooled together to provide the total funds needed to purchase your lot if not already owned and to pay your builder as needed throughout the construction process.

Interest rates on construction loans can typically be locked for longer periods of time than mortgage loans. In addition, some lenders offer a “float-down” option, which allows you to take advantage of a rate decrease during the construction phase. ▶ HOW DO DRAWS WORK? You will work closely with your mortgage banker to determine the loan terms and how the construction draw process works. Borrowers usually get between five and ten draws that coincide with certain stages of construction, such as pouring the foundation, framing, installations and finishing work. The bank and title company will work together with you and your builder to document and issue the draws to your builder throughout the construction phase.

Lender Tip: If changes occur in your project that will incur additional expense, be sure to let your lender know.

Once all funds have been drawn and your project is complete, your outstanding construction loan balance is refinanced or modified into your end loan — a mortgage.

Why I love living in the

Southern Valley

Each day of my life I am grateful for who I am, what I stand for, my family and where I live When I was asked to write an article for this magazine, I was stumped as to how I would possibly write something to show my appreciation of the Southern Valley in less than 500 words as requested. But, I am going to touch on just a few thoughts and simplistic feelings that I notice and feel daily. Each day of my life I am grateful for who I am, what I stand for, my family and where I live.

We all have priorities that we focus on and something as simple as climate here in the Red River Valley can be attractive, invigorating, and of course complicated. With our climate comes the change of seasons that lead into some ever-changing views. They are the beautiful integral crop developments, neatly mowed road ditches, road sides and lawns, clean shelter belts, managed ditches and water flows, and managed snow removal or respectful soil tillage in the fall. These are aspects that appeal to my sense of appreciation that farmers, property owners, highway and county officials exert to keep the physical beauty of this region appealing. To accomplish these feats it is not easy, of course, but it just all seems to happen by folks with values like my own. It’s very nice to see. Even seeing newly constructed houses, grain bins, and other buildings or modifications and repairs is something that makes me appreciate this region.

I pay attention to other areas of the country and notice how ill-kept things can be and it saddens me to see. Many times, these improvements are not terribly expensive, but more so, the improvements just take ingenuity or ambition to clean something up or correct a faulting problem.

Now, as I mentioned earlier, these are physical things that I certainly appreciate, but I believe that these types of “physical things” have an inherent effect on people and society as a whole. By encouraging a sense of ownership of a nice

physical presence of something, you now are bettering not only our community but yourself as a person.

Our Southern Valley region has a strong mentality of helping others, whether it is Cares for Cancer, a fundraiser for a fire department, a sporting group, or a family in need.

How perfect is that? Placing a value on human kindness is a very difficult thing to do. Placing a value on the positive benefits that come from that kindness can be nearly impossible. These benefits, short term and long term, are certainly exponential.

When I think of all the efforts put forth to somehow improve, or lessen the severity of, or, correct life challenges of individuals and families by others in this region, it is inspiring. I believe God is love and if we let that love have a bigger influence on our own attitudes, we can have stronger families, communities, and a stronger state.

As I look back at my own life and the experiences I have had, and what I look forward to in the future, I have a sincere appreciation of all the lessons learned from being part of the growth and prosperity of the Southern Valley. I know and understand that other areas of the country have magnificent mountains, wonderous bodies of water, and many other attractions. I really find those areas, of again, “physical beauty” inspiring.

I also find that they are not HOME. I enjoy the visits and as easy as it is to travel today, I like to go and see, and then come back HOME. The “home” aspect is very worthy to mention. I know that I sense a strong feeling of contentment here in the Southern Valley and look forward to many years ahead of me to keep improving the lives of all that I can here in the Red River Valley.
