‘Justified’ returns with ‘City Primeval’ sequel

To those who enjoyed the initial drama, a sequel to it is likely to seem quite “Justified.”

Timothy Olyphant returns in the further adventures of lawman Raylan Givens as the FX series “Justified: City Primeval” debuts Tuesday, July 18, with the first two of its eight episodes. Set 15 years after “Justified” ended, the saga adapts another story by Elmore Leonard (“City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit”) and newly factors Givens into it, with the U.S. marshal living in Miami after his time in Kentucky.

A situation that develops in Florida leads him to Detroit and a vicious felon known as the Oklahoma Wildman (played by Boyd Holbrook, previously of “Narcos”), whose lawyer (Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis, “King Richard,” 2021) has her own reasons for wanting to help her client elude the scales of justice.

With Olyphant also an executive producer of the show along with author Leonard’s estate, “Justified: City Primeval” includes Adelaide Clemens (“Rectify”), Vondie Curtis-Hall (“The Recruit”), Marin Ireland (“Hell or High Water,” 2016), double Tony Award winner Norbert Leo Butz (“The Girl From Plainville”), Ravi Patel (“Animal Control) and Vivian Olyphant — the star’s daughter, who plays Givens’ offspring — among additional cast members. They’re new to the “Justified” world, as is actress Ellis, who felt she couldn’t go wrong with material that originally came from the mind of Leonard.

“I just had a general familiarity with ‘Justified,’” she says. “I knew it was an Elmore Leonard adaptation, and I was interested in that because I’m a big reader. Then, when I started working on this, I watched (the original show) and got to see Tim being ‘that guy.’ It was one of those things where you feel a character was written for somebody, even if the author did not have that person in mind.

“There was a great singer named Phyllis Hyman, and Duke Ellington’s granddaughter says that she believes he wrote his songs for Phyllis Hyman even before she was born,” Ellis explains. “There also are acting roles like that, and I just feel that Tim is the person who was meant to walk in these boots.”

Much of the appeal for Ellis in playing attorney Carolyn Wilder in “Justified: City Primeval” came from what she defines as “taking that ‘Justified’ world and putting it inside Detroit and seeing those worlds collide. (Givens) certainly is a fish out of water there, and I love how Carolyn is very confrontational with him. She says, ‘I know how you’ve been doing things, but you can’t do them here … not in my town, and not with me.’”

Still, there’s room for Carolyn to have her own development arc. “There’s the world of justice and the world of law, and sometimes those don’t meet,” Ellis reasons. “I think Carolyn is one of those people who feel that justice isn’t necessarily found in a courthouse or a legislative building. You have to find it where you can find it, and I think that’s what makes her and Raylan kindred spirits. She does things that are necessary, but she still has to find her footing and be true to herself.”

Most of Ellis’s scenes in “Justified: City Primeval” are with Olyphant, but she also enjoyed sharing on-camera moments with co-star Curtis-Hall (“I just think he’s one of the best actors who has ever acted”). For as many strong women as she has portrayed, she found Carolyn a unique role, maintaining that she has little desire “to pull from other parts. Particularly for a woman on television, there’s an expectation that you fall in line within particular roles, but I wanted something new and something I had to grasp as I went along.”

Alex Morgan is ready for FIFA Women’s World Cup

Jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand, the much-anticipated FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off Thursday, July 20, providing a platform for the world’s best soccer players to showcase their skills.

This year’s international tournament has arguably the most talented pool of players, with several teams poised to make a strong run, though all eyes will be on the reigning and two-time defending champion: the United States.

Heading into this tournament,the U.S. is looking to secure its fifth World Cup title and make history by becoming the first women’s football team to win a record third consecutive FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The squad has no shortage of experience — in fact, this will be the fourth World Cup tournament for forward Alex Morgan. A two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup champion, the San Diego Wave FC star played a big role in helping the U.S. secure a spot in this year’s World Cup. In the title match of the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship (formerly the CONCACAF Women’s Championship), Morgan scored on a penalty kick to defeat Canada 1-0, earning the team a berth in both the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and 2024 Paris Olympics.

Having already played on two of the most talented teams, in 2015 and 2019, Morgan sees many similar championship qualities on this year’s team.

“I think this is the best team we’ve ever had,” Morgan told The Guardian in an interview. “I feel like we have the talent, we have the quality, we have the right coach, the right players, the right camaraderie, the right mentality.”

Going into the tournament with confidence at an all-time high, the U.S. will start its quest for another World Cup championship on Friday, July 21, with a Group E match against Vietnam, airing live (from Auckland, New Zealand) on Fox.

Q: Has “Young Rock” been canceled? – Tom Marcus, via e-mail

A: It has. It took NBC a while to decide after the show’s third season ended, but it won’t be getting a fourth. The sitcom based on Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s youth started out as a strong performer in linear ratings, and it even was faring respectably in its second year, likely thanks to the draw that Johnson is generally … but from that round to the third and ultimately last one, its ratings basically were cut in half, which was enough for the network to make its determination on whether the series would continue.

“Young Rock” wasn’t the only NBC comedy to experience cancelation in June, since “Grand Crew” also was handed a pink slip at the same time, That series had gotten two seasons, and based on the viewership returns, it can be argued that it made more of an audience impact on the streaming service Peacock than it did on NBC.

Q: It’s good to see “Nancy Drew” back, but is this really the last season? – Marcie Williams, Bend, Ore.

A: Yes. Production on the fourth and final round of the CW series that’s now airing (and will present its finale in mid-August) wrapped up a number of months ago, and the cast and crew members have gone their separate ways. Though a full series commitment hadn’t been made at the time of this writing, title star Kennedy McMann did the pilot for “The Good Lawyer,” a proposed ABC spinoff of “The Good Doctor” (the latter show has already aired that episode). And Leah Lewis, who was close friend George to McMann’s Nancy Drew, has been cast in CBS’ forthcoming “Matlock” reboot that will star Kathy Bates.

It’s time to “Get Smart” again

At a time when the spy craze was at its peak, comedic masterminds Mel Brooks and Buck Henry thought a spoof of the genre could be as successful as a serious approach to it … and thus was born “Get Smart,” the legendary 1965-70 series that continues a weekend marathon on Catchy Comedy literally all day Sunday, July 16 (and into the early morning of Monday, July 17)..

Don Adams plays Maxwell Smart, agent Agent 86, a self-assured if fallible operative for the agency CONTROL whose most famous gadget arguably is a telephone in his shoe. Barbara Feldon plays his partner, Agent 99, who takes a more sensible approach to the job – even when it means battling enemies from the organization KAOS, whose operatives include Ludwig Von Siegfried (later “Love Boat” co-star Bernie Kopell). Also notable in the cast: Edward Platt as Smart’s chief (known as “The Chief”) and Dick Gautier as robotic assistant Hymie.

Fun with food: A&E’s latest series highlight twisted and unique eats

This summer, A&E has expanded its “Home.Made.Nation” programming block with a slate of new series, including two new “twisted,” food-focused series: “Best in Chow” and “Deliciously Twisted Classics,” both having debuted Sunday, July 9, and continuing their run this week.

First, writer-actor-comedian Matt Richards (“Group Therapy”) travels the country coast to coast during “Best in Chow,” visiting state fairs, food trucks and street festivals along the way as he searches for some of America’s wildest foods and most creative cooks. In the series trailer, Richards can be seen enjoying everything from golden brown, savory waffles and colorful pineapple bowls to towering heaps of pasta and delectable, over-the-top desserts, determined all the while to find (and taste) the best of the best and the weirdest of the weird.

Each episode, Richards deploys his optimistic sense of humor, anchoring conversations with the creative chefs behind such wild concoctions as they share what brought their dishes to life.

After a colorful and unique first course, “Deliciously Twisted Classics” airs immediately following “Best in Chow” – “continu -

ing the hunt for outrageous eats,” as A&E explains. This new series acts as a celebration of comfort and creativity, as a panel of celebrity chefs and superstar culinary influencers sit down to sample deliciously extravagant spins on some familiar American classics, dishes made by some of the country’s top chefs.

The series’ first season is set to feature the likes of Aarti Sequeira, winner of “The Next Food Network Star,” Season 6, and host of “Aarti Party”; chef, restaurateur and TV personality Gina Neely (of “Down Home with the Neelys”); renowned author of the Southeast Asian cookbook

“Lemongrass & Lime,” chef Leah Cohen (“Tournament of Champions”); celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito (formerly of “The Restaurant”) and more, all of whom dive into the origin of our favorite “comfort foods” as they taste their modern, innovative counterparts.

Jam-packed with unique flavors, colors, tastes and textures, “Best in Chow” and “Deliciously Twisted Classics” highlight the art of making food fun, with new episodes releasing weekly as part of the “Home.Made.Nation” programming slate, airing Sundays on A&E.
