Love, death and parties: Season 2 of ‘The Afterparty’ premieres on Apple TV+

Mention the words “high school reunion” to nearly any adult and chances are their initial reaction will be to cringe. Regardless of one’s unique experience in high school — whether popular, nerdy, athletic or one who flew under the radar — most “grown-ups” would rather move toward their future without reliving too much of their past. That said, there are exceptions to every rule.

Upon its early-2022 premiere, “The Afterparty” proved that a high school reunion could be much worse than a single serving of cringe. In Season 1, the murder of party-boy influencer and reunion organizer Xavier (Dave Franco, “The Disaster Artist,” 2017) turned one graduating class upside-down. Now, in Season 2, the gang is (partly) back to celebrate love — but, yes, there has been another death along the way.

The next installment of “The Afterparty” premieres Wednesday, July 12, exclusively on Apple TV+.

In the official promotion for the show, Apple TV+ warns prospective viewers that “nothing is as it seems” in “The Afterparty.” Centering on the titular afterparty of the aforementioned high school reunion in Season 1, each episode tells the same story — the story of the night in question — from a different angle. A truly unique storytelling device implemented by creator Christopher Miller (“The Lego Movie,” 2014) and his team of writers, each character’s personality, preferred aesthetic and biases come out through the manner in which they choose to tell the events.

For example, Season 1 sees Det. Danner (Tiffany Haddish, “Girls Trip,” 2017) investigate Xavier’s death by first interviewing Aniq (Sam Richardson, “Veep”), a professional escape room designer, who chooses to recount the evening as if it were a romantic comedy. Second up to the proverbial bat is Brett (Ike Barinholtz, “The Mindy Project”), who presents the night as if he were in a good-guy action flick, followed by Yasper (Ben Schwartz, “Parks and Recreation”), an aspiring musician trying to get a leg up on the industry by using Xavier’s high-profile contacts. To no one’s surprise, Yasper’s interview is told as a quirky, upbeat musical.

“Broad City” comedian Ilana Glazer also provides commentary on the evening as her character, Chelsea, a vet clinic receptionist who harbors some ill feelings toward the now-dead Xavier. Chelsea sees the night as a psychological thriller, while the

remaining three partygoers-turned-witnesses — Walt (Jamie Demetriou, “Stath Lets Flats”), Zoë (Zoë Chao, “Love Life”) and Maggie (Everly Carganilla, “The Chair”) — each has their own very different stories to share during the final four episodes. Danner also gets a chance to speak.

It’s difficult to reveal the jumping-off point for Season 2 of a murder mystery without revealing at least some crucial details regarding Season 1, so suffice to say that only one person’s version of events can be the correct one, and, as Apple cautioned, it may not be what you’d expect. At the end of the day, however (or rather, the season), the murder is solved and the remaining former classmates can move on with their lives. Until Zoë’s sister’s wedding, that is.

“In Season 2, a wedding is ruined when the groom is murdered and every guest is a suspect,” the official synopsis reads. “Det. Danner returns to help Aniq and Zoë solve whodunit by questioning family members, star-crossed lovers and business partners, and hearing each suspect’s retelling of the weekend, each with their own unique perspective and visual style.”

In addition to the returning stars listed above, a host of new celebrities join the cast, including Zach Woods (“The Office”) as Edgar, the groom and murder victim; Poppy Liu (“Hacks”) as Grace, the grieving bride; Ken Jeong (“Community”) and Vivian Wu (“The Last Emperor,” 1987) as Feng and Vivian, Grace and Zoë’s parents; Elizabeth Perkins (“Weeds”) as Isabel, the late groom’s mother; and John Cho (“Cowboy Bebop”) as Grace and Zoë’s quirky Uncle Ulysses. Jack Whitehall (“Jungle Cruise,” 2021), Paul Walter Hauser (“Black Bird”) and Anna Konkle (“Rosewood”) also star as Sebastian, Travis and Hannah, respectively.

Touted as “a whodunit mystery but with a millennial flair,” by Collider writer Maddie P, “The Afterparty” Season 2 is comprised of 10 episodes, two more than its freshman season on the streamer. Originally slated for an April premiere, the newest instalment was tabled until July for reasons that remain unclear as of press time. At least now viewers get to enjoy a two-episode premiere.

It’s that time of year again, as the Seattle Mariners prepare to host the 2023 MLB All-Star Game at T-Mobile Park on Tuesday, July 11.

Excitement is building for this year’s Midsummer Classic, which continues the long-standing tradition (since 1933) of showcasing baseball’s finest talent and celebrating the game fans love. While fans voted to send their favorites to the game, Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels was busy generating headlines with his impressive offensive play.

Ohtani, who moved from Japan to the big leagues in 2018, appears to be on pace to match his 2021 MVP season when the pitcher/designated hitter became the first all-star in MLB history to be chosen as a two-way player.

With free agency looming, Ohtani is arguably playing the best baseball of his career. In a four-game stint against the Texas Rangers earlier this season, the former AL rookie of the year hit four home runs in the series, and in the final game, he struck out three Rangers.

Last year, Ohtani became the first player to finish among MLB’s top 15 in both home runs and pitching strikeouts since the pitching mound was relocated in 1893. If Ohtani manages to eclipse his 2021 MVP season, it will be hard to deny another MVP run at the plate.

If not for the talents of Aaron Judge hitting 62 home runs in the 2022 season, Ohtani would potentially be chasing his third straight AL MVP award right now. He remains one of MLB’s toughest pitchers (with an AL-low batting average against of .178 as of June 20) and was the first player in the AL to hit 20 homers (as of June 20 he had 24).

Off to a historic start, look for Ohtani to continue to put on a show for the fans, as the 2023 MLB season reaches the (symbolic) halfway mark with this year’s MLB All-Star Game, set for Tuesday, July 11. Fans can catch all the action live on Fox and Fox Deportes.

Behind Chuck Todd’s ‘Press’-ing departure

Q: Had Chuck Todd’s upcoming exit from “Meet the Press” been planned, or was it a sudden decision? –

A: It reportedly had been discussed upon the legendary NBC News program’s latest change of executive producers, but nothing was definite until Todd announced the forthcoming switch on the show in early June. The timing of the move came as a surprise to many, since such a series usually doesn’t switch its moderator on the cusp of a presidential election season. However, Kristen Welker – who will be Todd’s successor — has proven her chops on the political beat, and viewers being familiar with her in that capacity (and as a Sunday-morning fill-in anchor for Todd on a number of occasions) probably was a giant factor in her inheriting the “Press” role, which she’s expected to begin in September. Though Todd has had his share of controversy during his nine years in the job, there will be sufficient time to salute his tenure there before he leaves and begins serving as chief political analyst across all NBC News platforms.

Q: Is the version of “1883” being shown now on Paramount Network the same version that was streamed on Paramount+? – Jennifer Crain, Marietta, Ga.

A: For the most part, though perhaps with a little trimming here and there for content, since basic cable still can’t do certain things that a streaming service can. One bonus to the Paramount Network telecasts of the “Yellowstone” prequel – which stars Sam Elliott and singing-and-dancing spouses Faith Hill and Tim McGraw – is the inclusion of an extended featurette at the end of each episode, documenting the making of the show.

‘Fast Times’ remains fast fun

As the bottom half of a double feature from journalist turned filmmaker Cameron Crowe, Turner Classic Movies offers the very funny and sometimes surprisingly sweet “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” Saturday, July 15. Crowe adapted the 1982 film (which Amy Heckerling directed) from his same-named book for which he went incognito at a California high school, and though certain characters here may be more like caricatures – take, for instance, surfing-minded stoner Jeff Spicoli (played by Sean Penn) – the result is enormously entertaining.

Phoebe Cates, Judge Reinhold, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Forest Whitaker are among others playing students, with the great character actor Ray Walston the most notable adult on hand as … Mr. Hand, a no-nonsense history teacher whose classroom showdowns with the perpetually bemused Spicoli are among the very best scenes in the movie. The soundtrack is loaded with such hitmakers as Jackson Browne, Don Henley, Stevie Nicks, Jimmy Buffett and Joe Walsh. (The first part of TCM’s Crowe double feature, incidentally, is the superb “Almost Famous.”)

Barbecue is back: ‘BBQ Brawl’ and ‘BBQ USA’ return with new summer seasons

This summer is set to be big for barbecue lovers, as new seasons of both “BBQ Brawl” and “BBQ USA” premiere, airing back-to-back Monday, July 10, on Food Network.

With 10 new episodes, “BBQ Brawl” welcomes Sunny Anderson (“The Kitchen”) to the stage, joining Bobby Flay (“Beat Bobby Flay”) and Anne Burrell (“Worst Cooks in America”) as this season’s team captains, who will coach 12 of the country’s best pitmasters in high-stakes challenges, in the end determining who really is the “Master of ‘Cue.”

This time, the competition takes place in California, with Warner Bros. Entertainment dubbing the area “The home of Santa Maria-style barbecue and bountiful fresh ingredients.” There, the pitmasters put their skills to the test, along with their ability to work in teams as they are divided into groups of four, helmed by their given chef-slash-mentor.

The Warner Bros. release went on to promise an exciting first episode: “In an ode to the Golden State, they are serving up tacos in hopes of impressing the captains before they select their teams. Then they must impress with California-inspired smoky feasts,” presenting completed dishes to this season’s judges: Carson Kressley (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”), Brooke Williamson (“Top Chef”) and James

Beard Award-winning chef and pitmaster, Rodney Scott.

“From epic live fire cooking and rib fests to whole suckling pigs, the competition is more cutthroat than ever this season – and the smack talking hits new heights,” promises Warner Bros.

The cookout doesn’t stop there. Season 2 of the cooking docuseries “BBQ USA” airs directly after, following host Michael Symon as he takes a bite out of American barbecue culture, celebrating unique flavors and traditions from across the country and shining the spotlight on the talented cooks who have accomplished such meat mastery. Along the way, Symon pits pitmasters against each other, letting them compete for cash prizes and recognition for their craft.

“My love for barbecue is no secret, and I’m also no stranger to cooking competitions, which is why I’m thrilled to be back on the road visiting the premier barbecue competitions across the country,” Symon told Warner Bros. “I love meeting the passionate pit and grill masters and connecting with them over their life’s passion for ‘cue and learning their tips and tricks to share with audiences.”

Both Symon and Flay will be able to do just that, with the premieres of “BBQ Brawl” and “BBQ USA,” Monday, July 10, on Food Network.

“The Godfather” (1972): (Al Pacino) decides to resettle the family business in Ve gas, casino operator Moe Greene (Alex Rocco) makes a big mistake in not letting the crime clan buy him out.

“Rain Man” (1988): Hoffman and Tom Cruise end up in Vegas, where autistic savant Raymond (Hoffman) helps them cash in.

“Casino” (1995): the dark side of Vegas, with his frequent colleague Robert De Niro as a dicey casino manager.

“Leaving Las Vegas” (1995): view of Vegas is this portrait of a screenwriter (Nicolas Cage) intending to drink himself to death.

“Ocean’s Eleven” (1960): Arguably the ultimate Vegas movie, the Rat Pack heist classic follows several ex-soldiers - Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Peter Lawford among the actors involved - as they rob five casinos simultaneously on New Year’s Eve. Turner Classic Movies (which runs the film frequently) shows it Tuesday, July 11, as part of a tribute to films set in Vegas.

“Ocean’s Eleven” (2001): Vegas by the time George Clooney and company remade the crime comedy, so this version - stylishly di rected by Steven Soderbergh, who also set two sequels there - rates mention, too.

“The Hangover” (2009): to benefit from a Vegas backdrop, this raunchy come dy sets several pals on the trail of a missing groom.
