I’m just glad my black lab never tried those tricks

I

better write this quickly before the cat wakes up.

As of two days ago, I have officially become a kitten owner. This is hard for me to get my head around. For more than 40 of my 40-someodd years, and until very recently, I have been a dog owner. Except for a brief hiatus in college, I’ve always had a lumbering, slobbery, ball-chasing canine to blissfully complicate my life. Cats were things that my dog barked at. And excluding the occasional visit from a very vocal neighborhood tabby that we creatively call “loud kitty,” no felines have spent much time in our house. That is until Manny showed up.

A student in my wife’s French class had kittens that needed homes. I clearly remember our conversation about it. I don’t clearly remember agreeing to take one. But my wife assures me I did. And lord knows I trust her more than I do myself.

So now we have an eight-week-old, ocelot striped kitten exploring our house. He shows no mercy to his feather toy. He tears down the hall in serpentine fashion in pursuit of nothing. He’ll bound from chair to couch with eyes that certainly can’t open any wider. And then, as if someone tripped on his power cord, he’ll fall asleep mid-stride.

But his most recent fascination is my laptop. Attracted by the tappity-tap of the keys, he has twice snuck up on the keyboard. On his first attempt, he held down the power button and shut the machine off. On his second mission, he stood on the keys, succumbed to nappies and dozed off instantly on the warm glow between letters ‘Q’ and ‘P’, which he comfortably fits between.

Now I’ve got to hurry before his batteries get recharged. In a few minutes he’ll be awake again. And I suspect he’ll try to distract me with his fuzzy antics. I also suspect he’ll succeed.

Don’t worry, just because I’ve gone from dog owner to cat owner doesn’t mean we’re getting rid of the well-loved Coastside Canine page. Although ...

Coastside Cat is pretty catchy.

Flashback Before it was known as Surfer’s Beach

T

here was an active surf culture in Half Moon Bay in the early 1960s, long before Jeff Clark and Mavericks became famous and put the town in the worldwide headlines.

At the time, the only surfer I knew in the Half Moon Bay area was Boyd Olsen, who lived in El Granada. Boyd was an “older guy” who had a driver’s license and a car. I was part of a group of surfobsessed “groms,” or novice surfers, from Carlmont High School in Belmont.

Although too young to drive, we relied on older siblings or parents to drive us along two-lane Ralston Avenue to get over the hill to the Half Moon Bay coast.

Most of us surfed at the “breakwater,” as it was known to us. Today, it is known as the jetty or Surfer’s Beach. The breakwater had a parking lot on the west side of Highway 1 plus a sand beach, now lost to erosion. The original design of the breakwater, built by the Army Corps of Engineers, did not include an overlap of the vessel entrance to the harbor, which was added later, much to the dismay of surfers.

We called days of heavy waves and thrashing surf our “Victory at Sea” days, after the famous opening scene of the 1950s documentary series about the U.S. effort during World War II. Those surf conditions created a swell yielding a small but perfect wave that broke at the beach in front of the current location of the Half Moon Bay Yacht Club. Only a small handful of surfers knew about this spot. I was one of the lucky ones.

The surf was much better at the breakwater at this time, with two peaks formed by sandbars — one near the breakwater and one where the new beach stairs are located today.

The first time I surfed the south peak, I was riding the peak of a big wave and the force of the wave snapped my borrowed longboard like a toothpick. Fellow Carlmont student Ron MacAire, whose longboard I borrowed and was now in pieces, threatened to beat me up unless I paid him $40 for a repair. I came up with the cash. For a 16-year-old kid in 1964, that was a huge amount of money.

On some Saturdays, we would make our way to El Granada very early in the morning. Once there, we would meet with Olsen. His Rambler station wagon was perfect for holding all of our gear and boards. For $1 each, Boyd would drive us all south to surf at Cowell Beach in Santa Cruz. This was Nirvana to young surfers — better waves, warmer water and a nicer beach. It was an opportunity to surf “Surf City,” as Santa Cruz had been known since 1927. Cowell Beach was crowded with surfers even then.

We would frequently stay overnight and camp out at Steamer Lane. Staying overnight allowed us to surf Cowell in the evening darkness. The light of the pier allowed us to find our way. It was cold and we had the waves to ourselves.

After a long day of surfing at Cowell, we would stop at a drive-in on Mission Boulevard before leaving Santa Cruz. The featured menu item was six hamburgers for $1. The price was right for hungry surfer kids.

Our bellies full, we’d make the journey north on Highway 1 to El Granada.

By Clay Lambert Photos by Jamie Soja It is up to a cadre of Coastsiders (and the rest of us too) to assure that the lounging sunbathers of Fitzgerald Marine Reserve remain fat and happy and free to do nothing all day long.

Particularly now, during pupping season.

Pregnant harbor seals give birth all along the West Coast, from about March 1 through June 30. There is an established colony at Fitzgerald that delights binocular-bearing visitors, and there is no time like the present to see this cast of characters basking in the sunshine or meandering back and forth into the cold waters of the Pacific Ocean, which is a regular meat market for these carnivores. This time of year, you are sure to see some very young pups in their midst.

It’s always a good idea to give any marine mammal its space. In fact, whales, sea lions, elephant seals, sea otters and other pinnipeds are covered by the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Legal penalties aside, experts say that its particularly crucial to stay clear of harbor seals like those commonly found at Fitzgerald. Friends of Fitzgerald Marine Reserve “seal sitter” Kris Lannin Liang said other marine mammals have better defenses. Otters are quick. Sea lions can be aggressive. “And no one is going to mess with a bull elephant seal, and the babies are 300 pounds,” she says.

But harbor seals are more vulnerable. While curious in the water, where they can easily flee trouble,

they are like fish out of water when on California’s rocky shores.

“They are very fickle on land,” said San Mateo County Park Ranger Rob Cala.

“They can’t move very well.”

They do seem to find strength in numbers. Cala said that on a May day there might be 300 to 400 animals lazing on the rocky shores of Fitzgerald. They seem to not have a care in the world, but wild animals must be constantly vigilant. Experts have found that 300 feet is about as close as humans can come without spooking harbor seals. Signs at Fitzgerald remind visitors to keep that distance between themselves and the marine mammals. More recently, park employees have had to ask drone pilots to go elsewhere.

When spooked, the animals might raise their heads or even splash into the water, leaving their pups unattended. They might even abandon their pups, leading to greater mortality on the beach.

“There are all of these things that can happen to them,” Cala said. “They can be attacked by sharks or killed by fishermen.

We are just trying to improve the odds.

“People are really excited (when they see them) and most really want to stay away, but they want to do the ‘selfie’ thing,” 14

Cala can cite people who ignore warnings to stay away for violating the Marine Mammal Act. He is more likely to have a serious talk with anyone who strays beyond signs and barriers that move with the seal colony. Friends of Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, a nonprofit that exists to help protect the reserve and further its educational mission, helps law enforcement officers like Cala in a number of ways. It pays a portion of the salary for a park aide on the site, and it trains and coordinates “seal sitters” to keep watch over the seals and educate the public about the animals.

Lannin Liang said she and others often sit at a line of orange cones that runs from the water to the bluff about a football field away from the closest harbor seals.

They have binoculars and a lot of firsthand knowledge about these warm-blooded creatures.

Park aide Lauren Ford-Peterson spends her days monitoring visitors to one of the county’s most impressive parks. She has to ask people to be more considerate from time to time. “But I’ve never had a negative experience with people,” she said.

“People want to do the right thing.”

Fitzgerald trio provides lesson in work and life

K

ind reader, I want you to know that I love my job.

It’s a job I dreamed about from my earliest days of job-dreaming. I have always wanted to be a reporter and writer. My current job is exactly that and more.

It affords me the heavenly luxury of more or less deciding what I want to write about an oceanside community that is precious to me. There are days when I have to pinch myself so that I know the opportunity is real. Last week, that freedom brought me to a place called the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve and it is as magical as it sounds.

That is how I came to know Lauren Ford-Peterson, Kris Lannin Liang and Rob Cala.

I would like to think I’m as well suited to my profession as these three, but I am probably fooling myself. Their enthusiasm for that particular coastal environment and the animals that inhabit it is hard to put into words. “Passion” sounds right, except that the word has been “LinkedIn-ed” for so many mundane things that it feels bloodless now. Joe has a “passion” for sales. Sally is “passionate” about bookkeeping. There is really no adjective that works for both accounting and protecting tidepools.

They invited me into their world to tell me how important it is to give harbor seals and their pups space so that I could, in turn, spread that word more widely. The seals are very cute and completely deserving of our protection. So, please, stay 300 feet away from harbor seals. Bring your binoculars to the reserve.

You’ll be fine.

But there really wasn’t any place in my story to talk more broadly about Lauren, Kris and Rob. Lauren is a park aide. It’s a position that is jointly funded by the county and the private nonprofit that has taken this special place under its wing. It’s her job to make sure visitors respect what is perhaps the county’s most majestic landscape. She told me that people want to protect the animals, they just sometimes need a little reminder. She was smiling and kind and completely committed to a job that I’m sure will not make her wealthy.

Kris is a force of nature. She is a “seal sitter” and a rescuer for the famous Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito. She literally babysits the seals, sometimes positioning herself “at the cone line,” which is a constantly moving barrier intended to keep people away from the seals. But she is so much more than that.

She is an endless font of wisdom about these animals. When she sees the pups move on the beach below our vantage, she raises her binoculars as if she has never seen such a thing before. Her childlike curiosity is infectious and makes easy allies of everyone she meets.

Rob, I had met before. He’s a law enforcement officer and puts on a badge every morning. He is armed with the Marine Mammal Act and can cite folks for disturbing these gentle animals on our shores. For Rob, that is rarely necessary. He knows that people come to Fitzgerald because they, too, are curious and love these ocean creatures. He knows they just need help not to love the place to death.

I don’t know them well, but I am sure that Lauren, Kris and Rob are not primarily motivated by money. I think they are so good at what they do because they appreciate a job with a purpose that transcends commerce. The job itself is simply worth doing. They get up every morning and put on the drab green of State Parks employees then enter a colorful world of beings that need them.

As I get older, I think that meaningful work is the answer to many of life’s questions.

My work has helped me understand that the land mammals at Fitzgerald are just as interesting as the marine variety. If you are ever there, say hello to Lauren, Kris and Rob for me. I’m sure you will find them just as inspiring.

Terry Morawitz is among the group taking full advantage of the early morning hours by jumping into the Half Moon Bay High School pool. ill Saxsenmeier may have left his role as Half Moon Bay High School’s swim coach three years ago but the El Granada resident can still be found at the school’s swimming pool at 5 every weekday morning.

Since 2002 the now retired coach has served as the lifeguard for the Mavericks Swimming Association — a group of Coastside residents interested in logging laps in the pool before heading off to work or other responsibilities.

“Nobody needs me at 5:30 in the morning,” said Brian Lee, a real estate agent and father of two who lives in El Granada.

Lee has been coming to swim at the pool for nearly as long as the program has existed. Thirty years ago Lee used to participate in triathlons.

Before his kids were born, Lee would regularly hop on his bike for a workout, but now he finds swimming to be an alternative that fits more efficiently into 20

his family’s busy schedule.

Each day Saxsenmeier can expect to see roughly 15 swimmers at the pool and each morning typically features a different combination of regulars. The swimmers pay $60 a month for use of the pool, which goes toward a small “lunch money” stipend for Saxsenmeier.

Long before Saxsenmeier became the swim coach at Half Moon Bay High School in 1998, he had worked as a lifeguard in his teenage years.

Although he’s enjoyed getting to know the friendly group of swimmers over the years, Saxsenmeier never intended to be the long-term lifeguard.

“I’ll do it for a while, until we can find someone to do it,” Saxsenmeier said of his thought process at the time.

“I joked that no one was going to find someone as dumb as me to come here at 5 in the morning.”

Dumb or not, the swimmers appear grateful to Saxsenmeier for showing up every day.

“Bill’s very generous with his time,” said Half Moon Bay resident Maritza McMahon. McMahon says she’s been coming for an early morning swim nearly every weekday for the past eight years.

She says she enjoys the company of fellow swimmers and the rejuvenating effect of an early morning swim.

“I call it hitting the reset button,” she said.

El Granada resident and fellow swimmer Vanessa Bezerra echoes those sentiments.

“Being in the water feels spiritual,” Bezerra said. “I love the ocean, I love water.”

Bezerra decided at the start of the year that she really wanted to participate in the Alcatraz Sharkfest Swim that takes place in August.

She uses her morning swim time to train and says she aims to get a mile in each day.

Saxsenmeier says the pool temperature hovers around a decently warm 79 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. He’s there every morning, rain or shine, and many of the swimmers are as well. Even on some of the roughest mornings in the latest round of winter storms, Saxsenmeier said eight or nine people would still show up.

There’s a social element to the swimming group as well. Sometimes Saxsenmeier will grab coffee with some of the students after a swim.

The swimmers aren’t involved in any official swim meets, but the individuals often compete in races on their own, such as Sharkfest Swim or Pierto-Pier Swim in Santa Cruz.

Saxsenmeier says that the summer Olympic games appear to bring more people to the pool and are a main topic of conversation among the regulars.

In all his years as a lifeguard, Saxsenmeier says he’s never had to make a dramatic leap into the pool to save anyone. Although he’s provided basic first aid for cuts and scrapes, typically the job of the lifeguard is knowing how to spot signs of fatigue before someone has trouble.

When asked whether he continues to come each morning out of passion for the sport or simply out of habit, Saxsenmeier says it’s a little of both.

“The people are really great people,” Saxsenmeier said. “They love the swimming.”

HAVE THE HONEYBEES RETURNED? Beekeepers are thrilled about a bumper crop of healthy hives

alifornia’s monster drought is finally over. Parched plants are blossoming and the state’s honeybees are enjoying an abundance of nectar. So is honey production spiking this

year?

On the Coastside, the answer is a little more complicated than you might expect, and it involves factors like weather, tree and plant flowering cycles, bees’ activity, and the threat of deadly parasitic mites that can destroy entire colonies.

Nearly every aspect of the state’s agricultural industry, including its honeybee population, suffered under California’s fiveyear drought. Bees pollinate around a third of all crops in the United States, including almonds, 80 percent of which comes from Patricia Morrissey of Montara collects honey that varies in color and flavor.

California. But the bee population — and the honey they produce — took a hit during the years with little water.

Now, this winter’s deluges have officially ended the drought. But local beekeepers are watching with cautious optimism as their colonies slowly recover.

“That drought ran deep,” said Montara beekeeper Patricia Morrissey.

When Morrissey purchases a package of bees to start a new hive she feeds them sugar syrup to build up honeycomb. Normally, the nursing period lasts only a few weeks. During the drought, however, the bees would spend two or three months on the sugar syrup, with most ultimately dying. But recently, Morrissey has observed a rebound. “Starting last year, there appeared to be a big turnaround, not just in the amount of honey available, but also in the health of the colony.”

This year, Morrissey is enjoying a bumper honey crop from her hives at the HEAL Project’s San Mateo County School Farm, harvesting around 50 pounds from just one hive.

“It’s an incredible year,” she said. She attributes that partially to the region’s regular drought-and-rain cycle and partially to increased awareness in local neighborhoods, where Coastsiders are landscaping their yards with plants the bees like. “Neighborhoods are starting to plant for pollinators,” she said. “We need them and they need us.”

Morrissey has hives located throughout the Coastside, and each one produces honey of different shades, scents and flavors, depending on the vegetation nearby. A hive in Montara located near Cape Ivy produces a pungent, savory honey in a deep ruby red.

Another hive sits near a proliferation of poppies that give the honey a “sweet and peppery” flavor.

But despite the healthier hives and proliferation of pollen, Morrissey is still cautious about the livelihood of her bees. “People think that when the drought’s over they don’t have to worry,” she said.

But other factors can still threaten colonies, like weed killer, pesticides and mites.

For Gary and Teri Butler, who own Half Moon Honey, that last threat looms largest. Mites, especially Varroa and Tracheal, present the greatest threat to colonies — spreading quickly and deforming the bee pupae as they are formed inside the comb cells. The Butlers, who own around 500 hives from Pescadero to Devil’s Slide, lost “several hundred” of those this year to mites. “It was horrible,” Gary Butler said.

Both the Butlers and Morrissey opt not to use hard chemicals and antibiotics to fight the mites, instead aiming to breed more resilient bees that can

Half Moon Honey’s Gary and Teri Butler say the Coastside ecosystem is unique when it comes to honeybees. naturally withstand the invaders. “We want it to be a stronger species ... you never have a strong bee if you over-medicate,” Gary Butler said.

The Butlers see some hopeful signs: a resurgence of feral hives and “hygienic” bees, those that can detect and remove pupae that are infested by the mites. “Mother Nature will always find a way to solve this problem,” Gary Butler said.

Even without the scourge of mites, the Butlers don’t expect this year’s honey harvest to return to predrought levels.

That’s because the Coastside’s ecosystem is unique and in some ways less conducive to honey production than more urban areas.

“Traditionally on the coast, most of our honey comes as a result of eucalyptus trees,” said Gary Butler. “They start flowering as early as October, but the bees are dormant then.” The best honey production, he says, is surprisingly in metropolitan areas, because residents plant shrubs and flowers conducive to pollination. “San Francisco honey production is unbelievable,” he said. And since much of the Coastside consists of farmland, livestock may eat flowers and dandelions

before bees have a chance to reach them, Butler said.

“If we want honey on the coast, we have to produce hives that will become very large hives during the winter, which is not normal for honeybees,” Gary Butler said. The Butlers start a large number of hives at the end of the year and produce new bees throughout the winter, to ensure they are strong by the beginning of the year to sync honey production with the flowering of the eucalyptus trees.

But eucalyptus trees, with their deep roots, are making a gradual recovery after the drought, and so are the hives that harvest their pollen.

“So is honey production up this year? Not yet,” said Butler. “But will it be getting better as a result of the better rain? Yes.” It will take a while for the trees to fully recover from the drought, said Butler. “There will be honey production, but I don’t think we will quite get there this year.”

Butler likens cultivating honeybees to cultivating crops.

“It comes with all the problems of farming — the joys that come, but sometimes also the pains.” HALF MOON BAY

Microclimates determine what tomatoes to grow

ewcomers to the Bay Area quickly discover the vast differences in climate throughout the region. To help Bay Area gardeners understand the different growing conditions, a system has been developed to group cities with similar conditions. Three main growing zones have been identified in San Mateo County.

Hot: Warm to hot summers and cool winters, with the least coastal influence. This includes bayside cities like Redwood City and Atherton.

Sunny: This is a transitional zone with warm summers, mild winters and some coastal influence. Think Belmont and San Mateo.

Coastal: The coastal climate dominates, with colder and foggier summers and mild

winters without frost. This is Pacifica and Half Moon Bay and all of the area directly along the coast.

Tomato lovers needn’t move to a hot zone to get their favorite fruit. Tomato plants love heat and grow best in warm, dry weather, ideally between 55 and 90 degrees. They can grow yearround in warmer climates. However, in the Bay Area, tomatoes grow as annuals because they are eventually killed by the cold and frost. Our growing season starts in the spring, after the last frost, and goes until the fall when the first frost arrives and damages or kills the plant.

As a general rule, tomatoes that ripen quickly are the smaller “early to ripen” varieties such as “cherry” tomatoes. The varieties that ripen all at the same time are called determinant. These tomato varieties grow in cooler coastal climates because, even though

they will grow slower due to the cold, they are quick to ripen, increasing the odds of the fruit ripening before the season is over.

The larger “beefsteak” tomatoes ripen slowly and are better suited for the warmer climates where they will have more heat and time to fully ripen. While the heavy winter rains may have kept people away from this magical place, the redwoods, ferns and babbling brooks loved it and this hidden open space is ready to show off.

The trails are still a bit muddy, and fallen brances have blocked a few trails, but there are many areas that are dry and perfect for a hike. To get a taste of the place, a visitor need only walk in a quarter-mile from the western entrance, cross the bridge and find a place of solitude next to the creek. The extra water has created beautiful flowing pools. Record the sounds for a few minutes and you’ll have a perfect soundtrack for your next yoga session.

If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, continue up the 3-mile main Purisima Creek Trail or the beautiful Harkins Ridge Trail.

Both will lead you to Skyline Boulevard. The Whittemore Gulch Trail is a challenging alternate route but is closed seasonally. Call (650) 691-1200 for updated trail conditions.

This 4,700-acre preserve can be accessed from Half Moon Bay via Higgins Canyon or from Skyline Boulevard. Parking is limited at either entrance, and it can be difficult to find a spot during sunny weekends.

The original redwoods in the preserve were harvested in the later 1800s and early 1900s when the trees were about 1,000 years old. The ones you see today are considered second growth and most are around 100 years old. Despite their relative young age, there are still plenty of majestic trees to hike among.

Dad’s Luncheonette The caboose on Highway 1 at Shoreline Station has recently changed hands and now is occupied by the simple but tasty Dad’s Luncheonette. Instead of a typical full menu, Dad’s strategy is to limit its offerings to just a few choices, but do them well. Currently that means a hamburger on toast with a fried egg added ($12), a mushroom sandwich ($10), a seasonal soup offering ($5), mac and cheese ($5) and homemade potato chips. Don’t confuse this with typical diner fare.

The focus is quality, not quantity — and, so far, the recipe works. The unique location has seating for just a few patrons, so you might be better off grabbing a few sandwiches and fueling up under a redwood before starting your hike — not a bad combination. 225 Cabrillo Highway South (at Kelly Avenue) Half Moon Bay. 560-9832.

Beans Breed: Rhodesian Ridgeback and pitbull mix Age: 2 The Bucher family never knew how hard it would be to acquire a dog, nor how fully they would ultimately be acquired by that dog.

Two years ago, the Half Moon Bay family took off for a dog rescue center in the South Bay. “We were there for six hours,” recalls Corrine Bucher.

“And they said we couldn’t have one because we had never owned a dog before.”

Half the family decided to stick it out and take an interview with the organization just the same.

Husband Rick Bucher left them there and headed to son Mat’s Little League game back on this side of the hill at Smith Field. In the interim, he learned that “Beans” would be coming home with the family after all.

“Mat asked Rick if we had the dog, and when he said yes, Mat hit a home run,” Corrine Bucher said with a laugh.

Some might say Beans hit a home run that day, too. He enjoys running along the bluffs with Corrine and just being with the family that rescued him.

Renovating an historic home L

iving in a historic home can be a labor of love. The history and the distinct architecture of historic homes draw buyers to such properties, but what historic homes have in regard to history they often lack in the conveniences of modern life, forcing many historic-home owners to make renovations to bring their homes into the 21st century.

Historic-home renovations differ from other types of modifications. According to the Victorian Preservation Association, renovation is getting a home back to where it may have been when originally built, but making concessions for today’s lifestyle.

Preservation is the act of maintaining a structure in its current historic state, and restoration is returning a home to its original state. Unless a homeowner plans to use an outhouse or live without electricity, the majority of work done on historic properties is likely to fall into the category of a renovation.

Renovating an aging structure can be fulfilling and help to make a home more functional. But make no mistake, such a renovation is a major undertaking. Before beginning, it pays to hire a professional consultant with expertise in renovating historic properties. He or she can inspect the property to determine which areas of the home are safe and which will need to be upgraded. A professional inspection also can determine if any deficiencies lie hidden in the structure. Potential concerns can be

toxic paints and other substances, building code issues, rotting, and structural settling.

Professionals will know what to look for and guide homeowners accordingly.

Homeowners also may want to consult with a preservation association, community restoration group or general owner-builder group. These people can refer homeowners to the craftspeople and materials that will be needed for a job. Homeowners can request to see other historic properties in the area and learn what those owners did to maintain the integrity of a home when

using newer materials.

Before any work is started, homeowners should find out if their home is listed with the National Register of Historic Places. According to the United States National Parks Service, property owners can do whatever they want with their property so long as there are no federal monies attached to the property.

However, the property owner should also contact his or her state’s historic preservation office, or SHPO. The SHPO is the state agency that oversees historic preservation efforts in each state, and there may be state or local preservation laws that the owner should be aware of before renovating a historic property.

Craftspeople should have experience with historic homes and a sensitivity and appreciation of renovating older properties.

Homeowners always should see examples of a craftsperson’s work and verify references from each contractor before hiring anyone to work on the property.

Homeowners who want to include traditional hardware and other period details in their homes may be able to find quality replicas of historic milling materials, while others may want to scour antique shops or salvage yards for era-appropriate materials.

Historic renovations can be costly and have a tendency to go over budget because of unforseen damage and hazards that have to be repaired so the building is up to code.

Going into the project with this in mind can help soften the blow of extra costs down the road.

Historic homes can be beautiful and appeal to buyers who appreciate the one-ofa-kind nature of older properties. Renovating historic homes may take time and money, but the results may be well worth the effort.

Take inventory of what’s in your house. Empty nesters often find that their homes are still filled with their children’s possessions, even long after those children have entered adulthood and left home. If the storage in your home is dominated by items that belong to your children and not you, then downsizing might be right for you. Tell your children you are thinking of downsizing and invite them over to pick through any items still in your home. Once they have done so and taken what they want, you can host a yard sale, ultimately donating or discarding what you cannot sell. Once all of the items are gone, you may realize that moving into a smaller place is the financially prudent decision.

Examine your own items as well. Your children’s items are likely not the only items taking up space in your home. Take inventory of your own possessions as well, making note of items you can live without and those you want to keep. If the list of items you can live without is extensive,

then you probably won’t have a problem moving into a smaller home. If you aren’t quite ready to say goodbye to many of your possessions, then you might benefit from staying put for a little while longer.

Consider your retirement lifestyle. If you have already retired or on the verge of retirement and plan to spend lots of time traveling, then downsizing to a smaller home may free up money you can spend on trips. And if you really do see yourself as a silver-haired jetsetter, then you likely won’t miss your current home because you won’t be home frequently enough to enjoy it. If travel is not high on your retirement to-do list but you have a hobby, such as crafting, restoring classic cars or woodworking, that you hope to turn into a second profession, then you might benefit from staying put and converting your existing space into a workshop.

Many retirees downsize their homes, but this decision requires careful consideration of a variety of factors.

Federal officials and animal welfare experts are urging people to keep a safe distance from migrating whales that have been putting on a show off the coast of Half Moon Bay in recent weeks. They say the marine mammals can be harmed by human interaction.

Viviana Guzman has a whale of a story and the video to prove it.

Last week, the longtime Coastsider who is best known as an internationally renowned flutist, took her stand-up paddleboard out into the waters just off Surfer’s Beach. She was not alone.

The 1 minute, 23 second video she posted on YouTube on July 16 chronicles a very close encounter with a humpback whale. At one point, the whale breeched and bumped her on her paddleboard. The video had been viewed nearly a half million times on her own channel in less than a week, and had been seen many more times after media outlets around the world shared it with people who cannot get enough of the gargantuan marine mammals.

Guzman’s video is one of several recent social media posts showing close encounters with marine mammals just off Coastside shores. They are compelling viewing for anyone who is fascinated by the whales that these days seem as common as pumpkins in October. But not everyone is so enamored with the lengths some humans are going to get closer to the marine mammals.

Officials are warning coastal residents and visitors alike that whales are protected under federal law and that approaching them for photos or fun can harm them.

The Half Moon Bay City Council voted unanimously last week to extend the city’s long-held franchise agreement with Allied Waste for another year. The extension comes with an 11.6 percent rate increase that will take effect at the first of the year.

The city’s garbage hauler said the increase is warranted for a number of reasons.

In part, it’s because there are more than 500 additional residents who have chosen to use the 20-gallon service at $11.32 instead of the 32-gallon service that costs $23.22 per month.

Republic Services, also known as Allied Waste, also noted there are fewer customers using the service than was assumed in late 2010 when the company prepared data for the last extension that began in 2012.

In addition, the company cites a rise in employee costs and aging trucks that also end up costing the company more for maintenance.

“We had already signed a five-year agreement and had pricing already set,” said Carl Mennie, general manager for Republic Services, at the July 19 meeting. “We are coming at this point to ask for a rate increase because we feel it’s appropriate to continue to be able to provide these services for an additional year.”

Even with the increase, city staff says that Allied Waste’s rates are consistent with other similar communities. Staff noted, however, that drawing a direct comparison is often difficult when there are many factors to consider, such as whether street sweeping or agency fees are included.

A city staff report highlighted that Montara Water and Sewer District charges nearly $11 more for a 20-gallon container and roughly $40 more for the 64-gallon container than Allied Waste charges city residents.

“The city has actively engaged Allied in negotiations.

However, in the end, the city cannot force Allied to operate for an additional year (Calendar Year 2017) at a loss,” states See ALLIED a 6A

Dead whales found in Pescadero

For the second time this month, scientists are performing a necropsy on a humpback whale found near Bean Hollow State Beach in Pescadero. Scientists believe both animals likely died as the result of being struck by a ship.

On Monday, a team of six scientists from the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito and the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco arrived at the beach to find the carcass of a 32-foot juvenile female humpback. They report fractures to the back of the animal’s head that are consistent with hitting a ship as well as a cut on the right flipper. The flipper injury would indicate a previous entanglement of some kind, according to the Marine Mammal Center.

Giancarlo Rulli, a media specialist with the center, said the previous humpback was found about a half-mile away and also suffered injuries that appeared to be the result of a ship strike.

Rulli noted that three dead whales washed up on the same Pacifica beach last year and finding more than one dead whale on a particular stretch of beach “isn’t necessarily unusual.”

Humpback whales are counted among the most endangered whales in the world, but the Marine Mammal Center reports that 1,400 of the animals frequent the California coast.

CONTRACT NOT TO EXCEED $111,000

The city of Half Moon Bay is hiring a consultant to assist with the solicitation, selection and negotiation for a new solid waste agreement that would begin in January 2018.

It has selected R3 Consulting Group Inc. after the Half Moon Bay City Council voted at its July 19 meeting on a contract not to exceed $111,000.

The figure was the proposal pitched to the city. City staff

built in a $20,000 contingency to cover any additional, unforeseen costs — a move that was generally unpopular with the council.

“You can negotiate once you get proposals,” said Councilwoman Debbie Ruddock addressing city staff. “If they proposed $111,000 it looks like you accepted their proposal and didn’t negotiate further.”
