The power of summer camp

I

t’s funny the things you remember from summer camp. From the time I was 8 until I was 13, I went every summer, and mostly it was to our local YMCA Camp Campbell near Boulder Creek. It’s about 20 miles away from the home I grew up in, but at that time it was in another state — in another world. Not until I had moved away to college in Santa Cruz and passed the entrance on a drive up Highway 9 did I realize how close it really was. You mean this mysterious far off land in the redwoods was actually only about an hour’s drive by car? Granted, our journey via a yellow school bus full of boisterous and often vomituous pre-teens made the twisty road trip much longer, but the realization was still something of a let down. One year, I convinced my parents to let me go with a friend whose parents were driving him. He not only got sick on the way up Bear Creek Road, but relieved himself on the fabric seats as well. He then went home early because he was homesick. The next year, I was back on the bus.

It was truly a stunning setting. Towering redwoods, a meanandering creek for canoeing, hiking trails through a birder’s paradise. But for me, the things that stuck were making Shrinky Dink necklaces, being allowed to shoot a .22 caliber rifle into a bale of hay, and learning how to make your very own serving bowl out of a box of single serve Frosted Flakes. You can even pour milk into it!

It wasn’t all dumb stuff though. I was definitely changed by the end of the trip. We were changed. After spending a week creating a living hell for the camp counselors — which included my sister — we always shared a final campfire. For a brief moment, these incorrigable 10 year olds would let their guard down and allow themselves to be moved by the power of the redwoods, the brilliance of the starry sky, the warmth of the campfire, the sound of the acoustic guitar, and, most profoundly, the circle of new friends. Boys who would do anything to avoid being seen crying, would often shed tears, not knowing exactly why.

By the next day, we were back to making fart jokes on the vomit comet back down to civilization, but whether we knew it or not, we were altered. And I suppose now that that is precisely the reason why my parents sent me on these epic journeys Bill Murray to the other side of the world.

Eggs are an age-old symbol of spring, and for many of us this comes around just about the time we are giving up on our New Year’s resolutions to be healthier and exercising more. The egg is also a symbol of rebirth and renewal (and spring is that, after all!), so as your commitment starts to crack, let your inner spring – Bernard Meltzer chicken emerge and keep up the hard work you’ve put in for the past few months, otherwise you might start to feel fried…or scrambled.

In the kitchen, eggs are both the simplest to cook and the hardest to master. The 100 pleats on a toque blanche (chef’s hat) represent the different ways a chef must be able to cook an egg. A bit of fat, a pinch of salt, a couple of eggs and a little heat and you have the perfect breakfast, or a rubbery mess. We won’t even touch upon the most finicky of egg dishes, the soufflé!

As with all cooking, much is about technique, but there are several tools to help you enjoy this protein packed powerhouse, no matter how you like them: Fried, scrambled, over-easy, poached, hard or soft-boiled, or baked in cookies!

Egg quality changes gradually during storage as the whites become thinner. Eggs that are stored at room temperature age four times faster than eggs stored in the refrigerator. Although many refrigerators come with a special egg tray in the door, eggs are vulnerable to changes in temperature, and storing them on the fridge door where temperatures are warmer and fluctuate more than other areas of the fridge is not the best option. The best way to store eggs is to leave them in the carton they come in and place it in the back of the refrigerator as soon as you get home from the store. Stored in their original carton, eggs will maintain best quality for about 3 to 5 weeks.

California is in the midst of what could become a crippling drought. We asked three Coastsiders with unique perspectives on water to tell us what H2O means to them.

F

or me, water truly is precious.

Not just because it makes up to 90 percent or more of the beer I make for a living, but because it plays a critical role in the health of our environment. I enjoy hiking our beautiful coastal redwoods and have seen a lot of concerning signs recently that our water supply is critically low. I’ve seen wildlife, such as bobcats and deer, that typically don’t come down so far but are desperate for water. Also, small water ponds that used to exist year-round are dry and depleted.

As a brewery, we obviously use water to create our product. We have a goal to continually reduce our water usage and have become more and more efficient with it. We’ve been practicing a plan to recycle and reuse as much water as we can for cleaning purposes and have figured out many creative ways to do so. Still, I am deeply concerned about the drought and hope everyone considers conserving our resources. It is important that we take this opportunity to really acknowledge climate change and continue to work at becoming more environmentally friendly in all aspects of life.

ater is life for everything on earth — people, plants and animals. Water is beautiful in rivers, lakes, oceans and waterfalls. Water is fun for swimming, playing, surfing and sailing. Water for me is also exciting work.

We are blessed here on the Coastside with our own water cycle: the ocean that evaporates, filling the clouds, which then rain down on the mountains and feed our underground water supply.

I was born and raised in Germany, but I have worked with water in Spain, Mexico, Germany and now in California as the manager of Montara Water and Sanitary District.

I am proud of how Montara customers use our precious and limited water carefully and are among the lowest per capita water users in the state. I enjoy being part of the district as we modernize our facilities, using and distributing water wisely, and then cleaning up the wastewater and completing the water cycle by sending it back to nature.

hen I think of water, the very first thing that comes to my mind is the recent fish kill in the Pescadero marsh. Anoxic water laden with organic compounds has funneled again out of our Butano marsh and killed thousands of fish.

California State Parks owns and manages this estuary. The very first fish kill occurred the year following the completion of a restoration in the late 1990s. The intent of the restoration was to expand the wetland and increase the tidal prism. The results have been disastrous, and have led to the loss of habitat for the red-legged frog, San Francisco garter snake, tidewater goby and many bird species, with the north pond gate system allowed to rust away.

We have 18 years of studies behind us, and I wish we could put the politics to rest and implement the projects we have proposed. I urge everyone to go to our website at caseforourenvironment.org and see for yourself the results of a restoration gone wrong.

~ Exhibit captures wildlife in art

Ongoing All kinds of California wildlife will fill the walls of the Coastside Land Trust Gallery at 788 Main St. in Half Moon Bay in an exhibit that runs through March 21. Twenty-one Coastside artists have provided 28 photographs, oil or watercolor paintings, and batik, for sale from $75 through $1,800.

The subjects capture wildlife from all regions of California from coastal to desert to mountains to streams.

“There’s definitely something here for everybody,” said Coastside Land Trust Project Coordinator Eric Rutledge. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays. For information, call 726-5056.

It might seem like just another collection of eclectic roadside shops, but Spanish Town boasts online reviews that would be the envy of any savvy 21stcentury retailer. Take, for instance, some of the latest reviews on yelp.com:

That happy place is located along Highway 92, at the eastern edge of Half Moon Bay. You can’t miss it, because it’s guarded by those dinosaurs. They are great, sheet-metal beasts towering over the traffic below and they serve as prehistoric landmarks. Many visitors are instructed that they are getting close to downtown Half Moon Bay when they pass the patagosaurus.

Spanish Town — the shops — date to the 1950s and are a part of the area’s history in more ways than one. There was a time when Half Moon Bay itself was called “Spanishtown,” a nod to the Spaniards who settled in the area in the 1800s. The land the shops sit on is associated with the original Rancho Miramontes land grant that covered a large swath of the coast. In

fact, current owner Rosalie Svare is the great-great-granddaughter of the Spanish military officer who received the land grant in 1841. Her own daughter, Tiffany Biggs, is now managing the complex.

“It’s an honor to be back and helping out at Spanish Town,” said Biggs, who is a psychologist who returned to the coast after living in Seattle and getting a degree in design. There are now four tenants and room for a fifth, and tenants are praising Biggs for her enthusiasm and future plans.

No one is more excited about that than Montaran Darin Boville. On a recent cold and soggy morning, he was working on a 380-square-foot space that would soon be his new photography studio. He had gallery space about a dozen years ago in Maryland before moving to the coast but said it wasn’t well located, and running the business wasn’t much fun.

When we found him, his big plans were literally written on the walls at Spanish Town. Penciled notes and arrows show where he plans to place exhibits that include a large-screen monitor for electronic stills or video. Tape on the floor marks where his desk and displays will go.

His plans include a listing of Coastside photographers, should visitors want a wedding or other contract photographer, and space for high school students to sell inexpensive photographs.

She was the granddaughter of Candelario Miramontes, who was awarded the land grant that was called Rancho San Benito, and then Spanishtown. Part of that holding remains with the family today, including the eclectic shopping area along Highway 92.

“I think if young people get a little bit of encouragement — and not just from their parents, but by selling a couple pieces for $100 — they would want to be artists,” Boville said.

For him, opening a new gallery is a bit of a leap of faith.

He says he is more interested in having a good time than making a killing. And he’s encouraged by the location — a spot that residents and visitors pass by every single day.

“If one-tenth of 1 percent of the people driving by stop to check it out, some percentage of them will be interested in photography,” he said.

If he ever lacks for enthusiasm for Spanish Town, he need only wander around the corner and talk to Richard Hansen. Hansen, a former heating and airconditioning man, has been running his Decorative Art business in Spanish Town for 28 years.

Hansen said it began when he and his late wife started refurbishing furniture and antiques. One thing led to another and Hansen decided to concentrate on his own aesthetic.

“I always had sea shells as decoration and just love nautical things,” he said. Today, his space in Spanish Town is festooned with seashells, model ships, likenesses of lighthouses and other things that seem to

come from the nearby ocean. It was a slow morning in Spanish Town, but Hansen said that can change in a heartbeat.

“You never know. There could be someone coming in any moment who wants a nautical theme for her wedding. Sometimes the best weather days are our worst days because people want to go right to the beach.”

Oracio Bautista is the dinosaur wrangler.

That is to say, he is the manager of Fabbri Home and Garden, which is an almost indescribable collection of lawn ornaments

and other goods that take up a rambling section of Spanish Town. He’s been working at the store since 2005.

“We have a little bit of everything,” Bautista says. Surveying his domain, he said 80 percent of it is suitable for outdoor decoration and that the big sellers are pots for plants and water features or fountains.

“I would say most of our business comes from landscapers and architects and professionals who know us,” Bautista said.

spend an hour and a half walking around until they find something that is right for their home.”

Missing that day was Ram Subedi. He was in his native Nepal, Biggs said. He’s been selling products from his homeland through his Maya Devi Imports at Spanish Town since 2007.

Taken together, it’s an interesting mix, which is still drawing tourists and vendors like Boville.

f you want to see where Jill Robinson has been, you can start by looking at her wrist.

On this February afternoon, for example, she wears two bracelets on one arm, one from Colombia and the other from the Caribbean. Her ears are adorned with earrings from Australia. The jewelry she brings back from trips jogs her memory about those adventures when she wears them, she says, and makes her happy. t

Looking for a quick spring break getaway?

Robinson recommends Tofino, located on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, and Sayulita, Mexico.

Robinson says Tofino’s foggy summer weather, good food and outdoor recreation opportunities make it comparable to Half Moon Bay. In Sayulita, visitors can hang out by the beach, tour the rain forest, and dine on tasty Mexican cuisine.

“It has a similar feel to here but it’s somewhere very different,” Robinson said. “Neither of those will cost tons and tons.” Both are also surf towns, she added.

The 46-year-old El Granada resident has spent much of the last two decades traveling, but began making a career out of it nearly five years ago. Her work has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle, The Washington Times, Lonely Planet and more.

“The thing I love about traveling is that I always want to learn something new, and I always come back significantly changed,” Robinson said from her Coastside home, a table of trinkets from her travels sitting behind her.

Robinson grew up in Concord, Calif., and though her family traveled throughout the West Coast often, she didn’t get on an airplane for the first time until her late teens.

That may seem ironic given that Robinson was away more than she was home last year, and that she has traveled to six continents and countless countries.

“I have no idea how many countries I’ve been to,” she said. “For me, it’s about the memories and not the number of places I’ve been to.”

Robinson began traveling more extensively in her mid-20s. A Sunset Magazine article about kayaking inspired her to get out and do more outdoorsy things. Not long after she

She has been everywhere, but chooses to live here.

As a Coastside resident for nearly 14 years, Jill Robinson has ventured from Princeton to Pescadero and everywhere in between for food and fun. For outdoor enthusiasts like herself, she says it’s hard to beat hiking on Montara Mountain or at Quarry Park.

While Half Moon Bay is known for the Pumpkin Festival, she loves the pumpkin weigh-off because it “says so much about the coastal farming community that you don’t get at the festival.”

For dining, Robinson gives Café Gibraltar in El Granada two thumbs up for what she calls amazing Mediterranean food. She also recommends that visitors stop by Harley Farms Goat Dairy in Pescadero, where you can buy cheese, bath and body products and take part in a farm dinner, with a reservation.

For a little bit of everything, head to Pillar Point Harbor, Robinson recommends. “It’s interesting to see the types of folks that hang out at the harbor. People are coming there to buy fish and to fish, to surf, kayak, stand-up paddleboard, eat and drink. It’s a fantastic spot.”

met her now-husband Doug Connor of Half Moon Bay Kayak Company — while kayaking, of course — and they began traveling to Honduras and taking kayak trips there.

That was the spark that flared her passion for travel, and it remains ever-present.

“Even if I’m traveling on vacation and don’t necessarily have a story in mind, my brain doesn’t shut off that way,” Robinson said, explaining that even if she is on a personal vacation, she is filing away story ideas in the back of her mind.

So why did Robinson settle down on the Coastside, of all locales?

“I like the space,” she said, saying she preferred having a big backyard to living in San Francisco. “It’s pretty laid back here … it’s a place I love to come back to.”

For her job as a freelance travel writer, Robinson usually visits places she hasn’t been to before, and while her main focus is on checking out activities that a person of average fitness could do, she sometimes seeks more extreme adventures. In 2012, she came face- to- face with a 1500-pound crocodile by choice, as she was submerged underwater in a cage in Australia.

“That was one of those trips I didn’t tell Mom about right away, which was really hard because she lives a block away,” Robinson says with a laugh. “It was super fun and anyone can do it, but it was really intimidating to have a crocodile in your face.”

It’s not easy for Robinson to choose a favorite country or trip, though she says Honduras and New Orleans are her homes-away-from-home. When asked that question, Robinson says she often responds by talking about her favorite trips from the past six months, which she says are Fiji, where she encountered “so many more shades of blue than I ever thought existed,” and Namibia, a country in southern Africa.

This year, Robinson will be traveling to Hawaii on a leisure trip with her husband, India, New Zealand, Australia and Colorado, with the late summer, fall and early wintertime yet to be planned out. But she knows wherever her travels may take her, her feet will always carry her home to the coast. HMB

Jill Robinson’s travel tips: Look it up: Robinson recommends that you not be intimidated by what may be generalizations that friends and family make about a place. “People are sometimes unnecessarily afraid of areas,” she says. “Do a small amount of research and see if what you’re looking for is going to work there.”

Keep an open mind: Robinson isn’t a big fan of cruises, but she won’t close herself off to the idea of taking one. She advises that you don’t lock yourself into a particular box when looking for a vacation destination.

“If you dismiss something out of hand you could miss something amazing,” she said.

Do what you love: “If they like doing a certain thing all the time, look for the thing you love to do,” Robinson said, using diving as an example.

Be able to answer “Why?”: When Robinson is pitching an article idea, she asks herself, “Why this place, and why now?” She says travelers should apply this logic to prospective trips, asking themselves what their objective is — whether it’s to lounge poolside or go on an outdoor adventure — and what place best suits that aim.

Dave Barber takes fresh fish, adds a little smoke and sells food with a distinctly Coastside flavor

T

he Creekside Smokehouse is an El Granada institution. It’s changed hands a couple of times since opening two decades ago, but the delicious smell of smoked fish has been a constant all around the blue building on Avenue Alhambra.

The smokehouse closed for business for about a month earlier this year to allow owners to freshen up the joint. But it’s reopened,

and fans of smoky, flaky fish are happy for it.

We caught up with Creekside’s sergeant of smoke, David Barber, while the place was closed. He was kind enough to give us a bit of history, describe his process and explain the meaning of the word “peticle.”

Clay Lambert: How long have you been at this?

Dave Barber: For 10 years in April. The original guy, Pat, started it back in 1993. Pat passed away, then another guy got it and had it for 12 months and then I got it from him.

CL: How do you learn how to do this?

DB: I worked with him for a month. Then he gave me the recipe book and said, “Here you go. Run with it.”

CL: Do you cook at home?

DB: No. CL: Do you get the fish that you smoke right out of Pillar Point Harbor?

DB: Yes. I was getting it in San Francisco, but now we’ve gone over to Exclusive (Exclusive Fresh fish wholesalers).

They drop it off.

CL: How much do you smoke?

DB: We do two “wild” a week. That’s wild salmon. That’s the hot smoke. Then for our farmed salmon, I usually do 20 sides (fillets) or something. Then we also do tuna and sturgeon. That’s for the week, pretty much every week.

CL: Show me how it works.

DB: The process starts on Tuesday when I get my fish. I come in and start filleting it. I’m cutting up fish all day on Tuesday. Then it goes into a brine for two days. Then I get in here at 5 on Thursday morning, take it out of the brine, then get everything in here, in my hot smoker. I just got done cleaning it, but I have racks that go in here, and the fish goes on screens. That’s Thursday morning. I get it in there at 6:30, so the fish is ready to come out about 2:30, 3 o’clock. It smokes for about eight hours.

CL: At what temperature?

DB: This is the temperature deal right here. (Barber pushes a button on an elaborate computerized keypad. The machine, which takes up one wall of the building, comes to life. It’s jet-engine loud.) This is the brain. I just hit a button and stand here and feed the smoke in.

CL: Your sheet indicates it starts at 90 degrees. Is that right?

DB: It starts at 90 and in the next hour goes up to 99 and then the temperature hits 160 for three hours if I need it.

But I never really need it to get that hot. The fish itself is done when it gets to 145 degrees. I have a probe, this guy, that I put in the biggest piece of fish. It lets me know when it’s ready to roll.

CL: In other words, the fish has to be 145 degrees. It’s not really a matter of cooking it for eight hours.

DB: Exactly.

CL: Where does the smoke come from?

(Barber motions me around the corner and we walk behind the wall onto the back porch of the building. On the ground is a metal contraption connected through the wall to the smoker by silver pipes that resemble the hose from a household clothes dryer.)

DB: “This guy … is my smoke box here. I get five briquettes going in my chimney thing and, once that is going and hot, I fill it up with hickory. It’s almost just like a sawdust. Then the smoke is cooled down before it goes into the machine.

CL: That’s awesome! Why do you use hickory wood for your smoke?

DB: Because that is what the guy was using when I took over and I didn’t want to mess anything up. A lot of people put applewood and oak and this and that combination.

I just never feel the need. (Points at an adjacent contraption.) And then this is my dehydrator for our salmon jerky. It doesn’t need refrigeration. It gets dehydrated 24 hours before I smoke it in the cold smoker.

CL: What’s the cold-smoking process?

DB: Once again, on Tuesdays, I usually do about 12 to 15 sides there. Lightly salted for 24 hours. Wednesday, when I’m smoking my cheese, I come in here and rinse the salt off, pack it in brown sugar till Friday morning.

Then I come in and rinse off all the sugar and they sit in the cold smoker here. It’s just like a big refrigerator. They set in here for three hours and they develop a peticle, that’s what it’s called. It just gets a little sticky to the touch. A tackiness to it. That lets you know the fish is ready to absorb the smoke. So I fill it up, put my salmon jerky in and have the smoke started at 1 p.m. and it goes overnight.

The jerky goes for 11 hours.

CL: What’s the difference in the taste?

DB: The one tastes smoked and cooked, and the cold smoker tastes like lox, but not as salty.

It’s for your bagels and cream cheese.

CL: Why were you closed in the month of January?

DB: To put together the kitchen. We needed a little break, but we’ve been in here painting, inside and outside.

DB: Usually on Wednesday I’m in here smoking cheese. I have a bunch of different cheeses and I put them in the cold smoker.

CL: I heard about that. You do that in the cold smoker?

DB: Yes. It just gives everything you put it on a smoky flavor. I guess I’m the only person in the U.S.A. who smokes butter. That’s what I’ve been told.

DB: It’s pretty much year-round. We get most of our business on the weekends and fishermen bring us fish to smoke for $7 a pound. Hot, cold, half and half, whatever you want.

CL: You ever feel the need to put some ribs or brisket in this thing?

DB: Can’t do it. I could, but then I would have to clean this thing out. Cross-contamination.

So I just stick with fish and then I don’t have to clean it out but once a year.”

CL: Did you grow up here?

DB: Yes, fifty-one years ago. I went to El Granada Elementary, Cunha (Intermediate) and Half Moon Bay High (schools).

CL: Has the area changed much in that time?

DB: Lots! Lots more people. But I didn’t go anywhere. HMB

he tiny town of Pescadero is gaining a reputation for drawing giant crowds. Drive into the small South Coast hamlet on any fairweather weekend and you’ll be lucky to find a parking spot, much less a table at the popular Duarte’s Tavern. While the town remains sleepy on most weekdays, any holiday or weekend will bring a

deluge of day-trippers.

And that’s no accident. The town has recently been undergoing change, with a fresh crop of boutiques opening along the small downtown strip on Stage Road. A new wine bar, the town’s first coffee shop, a pizza stand and cocktail lounge have all opened recently to serve the horde of tourists flocking to the small town.

In other towns this might be normal but, for Pescadero, catering to out-of-towners requires a relatively new mindset.

The small town has a deeply rooted history in a cluster of long-standing families, and the insular nature of the farm town remains part of its charm. For many decades, the business community of Pescadero consisted of Duarte’s and the town’s two groceries. Their customer base was almost exclusively local.

Since then, the town’s commerce has spun 180 degrees to become a tourist hot spot. Both town groceries have expanded and adapted. The Pescadero Country Store, once the town’s general-supply store, has morphed in recent years to include a wood-fire pizza kitchen, barbecue picnic area and a barroom.

It’s not quite how it used to be in Pescadero, said Ken Pesso, chairman of the town’s municipal advisory council. The council serves as a sort of de facto town council and advises the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors on matters related to the South Coast. Pesso notes that crowds of cyclists, motorcycle clubs and families stream into the town on most weekends.

“It’s awesome. It’s really cool to see how Pescadero has changed,” he said. “For us, this has all been great, absent the overcrowding that happens sometimes on the weekends.”

The town is still adapting to that change. On busy days, the downtown lacks parking and other facilities needed for the crowds. Local leaders hope to someday install public restrooms and possibly free Wi-Fi downtown.

changes to Pescadero, said John Arcangeli, whose family runs the namesake Pescadero store. To a certain degree, he can understand the complaints because the town identity was partly tied to its self-sufficiency. Today, Pescadero residents routinely need to commute to Half Moon Bay or elsewhere for certain foods, clothes or supplies. The town’s hardware shop closed down years ago, and most Pescadero residents know the chore of driving half an hour just to buy a small household item or widget. In exchange, Pescadero now has a cornucopia of artisan cheeses, preserves and high-end crafts.

Arcangeli is ambivalent about the trade off.

“I can’t call what’s happening in Pescadero an improvement or a downgrade,” Arcangeli said. “There’s definitely some classier, more urban options to choose from now, which does round things out.”

What is indisputable is that there’s money to be made with the tourist crowds.

Arcangeli recently opened Pescadero’s first wine tasting room to showcase his family’s Sante Arcangeli lineup of vintages. Having a retail space in Pescadero has worked wonderfully, he says, although he credits this in part to the high quality of his wines.

Local businessman John Betteo, who moved from San Francisco just last year, believes the new wave of shops is a breath of fresh air in Pescadero. He and his wife run a gourmet coffee shop, Downtown Local, and a specialty foods store, Chikken Revolution.

“The town is opening up to showcase other things that are available locally. We’re not just a sleepy ranch town anymore.”

Morgan Bloodhound Age: 10 Morgan the bloodhound lives in Moss Beach, where after turning 10 on March 1 he is now enjoying retirement. He worked hard for nine years in the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office K9 unit.

“He’s a knucklehead,” owner Sgt. Matt Broad, says affectionately of the 100-pound dog with the soulful eyes. He’s also friendly but stubborn, says Broad, and very intelligent.

“He’s smarter than I believe bloodhounds are.

There’s a lot more going on there than we give credit for sometimes.”

Broad chose Morgan at 6 weeks of age after thoroughly testing his working-dog attributes. After Morgan became part of the K9 unit, he was owned by the agency, but Broad remained his handler. His training started at 10 weeks. Dogs don’t work, they play, said Broad, and “simple puppy games” over longer and longer distances honed Morgan’s ability to pursue a target, follow a scent and “follow a human trail.”

Upon Morgan’s retirement, Broad bought the dog, who now lives a life of ease with Broad and his wife. He plays with their young son, and he’s totally spoiled. “He’s very content lying on the couch,” said Broad.

eri and Gary Butler are known around the Coastside as the beekeeping husband and wife. But their neighbors may also know the Half Moon Bay couple by their newly renovated home, which over a span of four years has doubled in size from 2,000 to 4,000 square feet.

In that time, the home has gone from a threebedroom, two-and-a-half bath residence to four bedrooms, four-and-a-half bathrooms. That includes adding fun touches, like a surfboard shower on the front of the house, to total makeovers of parts of the house.

Gary Butler has owned the house for 25 years, and the remodel began around the time of Gary and Teri’s marriage four years ago. They did not hire an interior designer for the project but decided they wanted a clean, contemporary look that allowed more light into the home. The couple “stalked open houses,” as Teri Butler says, to get ideas for what they wanted.

“We were bringing color chips on our vacations trying to decide,” Teri Butler said.

One of the most dramatic changes was to the couple’s upstairs kitchen, which tripled in size by Teri Butler’s estimation.

Builder Victor Watteyne of Watteyne Enterprises Inc. says the existing walls were stripped down to the studs, and the exterior walls were reframed with a bay window to allow more light into the space. Brandnew appliances and countertops were brought in as well.

“It was actually a lot of work,” Watteyne said.

“Nothing at all was leftover.”

Another drastic makeover resulted in the quadrupling in size of the master bathroom. The bathroom now contains a walk-in shower and new granite countertops with matching drawer knobs that come from Gary Butler’s home state of Michigan.

The remodeled house is full of personal touches, from what Teri Butler jokingly calls her “girl cave,” a walk-in closet with a small TV mounted above a washer and dryer set, to the bevy of bee trinkets throughout.

“It’s fun to show folks what we did,” Teri Butler says. “We tried to use locals as much as possible.”

Watteyne says good communication with the Butlers was the key to the project’s success.

“The good thing about working with them is they were very clear about what they wanted and didn’t want,” he said.

Teri Butler’s advice to those looking to do a big remodel? Expect the unexpected.

“Expect it to cost more than your budget and expect it to take longer, but enjoy the process,” she said.

Though less than a mile from big-wave surfing spot Mavericks, the ocean here can be quite calm due to the extensive reef protecting the beach. It is one of the few spots where a casual swim with a wetsuit is possible. Watch out for the reef in shallow areas.

It’s not much to look at, but a great way to fill up after a day of tide-pooling and beach-walking is at the nearby taqueria. It’s been around for many years and at times has very healthy lines, so be patient. Well-stuffed burritos, shrimp tacos, and tamale plates are reasonably priced and delicious. The effort goes into the food, not the ambiance. Eat in their enclosed patio area or bring your bag of treats with you to the beach. (Just be certain to leave nothing behind.) Ask for the orange salsa with your chips — tangy, spicy and really good.

Junior Lifeguard Program

The Junior Lifeguard program, run by the California State Park Lifeguards, is a unique and challenging aquatic program to educate community youth about safe ocean recreation. The four week sessions emphasize teamwork, fun and ocean safety and give the Junior Guards a well-rounded education that can be utilized on and off the beach. New Junior Lifeguard participants, (i.e. have never participated in a State Junior Lifeguard Program before), or did not participate in a State Junior Lifeguard Program last summer, are REQUIRED to attend a tryout. Dave Alexander’s private surf lessons will continue throughout the year, and his Spring Break and Summer Surf camps are back by popular demand. Kids can be wet and wild all summer long as they learn proper surfing etiquette and ocean safety, while having fun and enjoying the exhilarating experience of riding waves. The surf camp is for all ages and all levels. Surfboards are supplied, and wetsuits must be worn. They can be rented from any of the local surf shops. The ability to swim is a requirement.

The camp is held at Surfer’s Beach, and a weeklong session is held for spring break camp and for each summer camp. Go to the Open Ocean Surfing or the HMB Recreation website for exact dates for the spring and summer classes. Classes are held Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Don’t forget your sunscreen, towel and sack lunch. Each session is concluded on Friday with a fun barbecue. Spring Break Youth Sailing Camp runs April 21st - 25th from 9am - 3pm. This fun day camp will focus on safety and getting everyone out on the water. After brief land chalk talks and related games, participants will receive maximum time out in the boats for experiential learning and development. Activities will vary depending on experience of participants but may include rigging, boating safety, weather for sailing, boat-handling and just-for-fun games. Participants must be able to swim but no prior sailing experience is necessary. Ages 8-12 Summer Youth Sailing Camp begins June 16th and runs for eight weeks with a one week break in the middle of July. This year the program will be split up into two groups based on the age of participant during session and under some circumstances, experience. Each week, curriculum will be catered to unique interests and abilities. The goal of summer camp is to have fun! So, in addition to basic boating and ocean safety on-shore, the main focus will be to get out on the water, explore the marine environment and build confidence though hands on experiential learning. Older and more experienced participants can expect to be more challenged with advanced concepts and coaching depending on their interests. Camp enrollment maxes out at 12 participants in the younger age-group and 8-12 participants in the older agegroup depending on the average experience level in each week’s group.
