DECEMBER 2015

House hunting can sometimes be a full-contact sport

O

ur search for a Coastside home in 1999 wasn’t featured in House Hunters. It would have spanned an entire season of shows and I suspect the ratings might have taken a nose dive. While it came out OK in the end, and we love our little Montara house, the process was more like a Rocky Balboa fight and we were Apollo Creed’s rib cage. It takes an incredible amount of courage to make the decision to become a homeowner and a whole mess more to actually write the first offer with your real estate agent. It involves many sleepless nights and hand wringing over whether we made the right decision. Can we afford ths? Is this where we want to put down roots? Against my dad’s advice we put down an offer well above the asking price. We were outbid by a dozen other offers. We weren’t even close. Jab to the chin. We then proceeded to lose the next five homes, getting outbid on each of them. The process was the same: Search for weeks, spend every weekend at open homes, gather the courage to put down our life savings, envision ourselves in the new home, get shot down. Right cross followed by a series of devastating body blows. Nearly a year later, we landed our home and after pleading with the owner, showing him pictures of our adorable 2-year old daughter, and, of course, offering him more money than he asked for. We shoed out the family of raccoons that had been enjoying the living room, pumped the swimming pool of water out from under the house and have succeeded in making a home in one of the most beautiful places in the world. It didn’t go as planned, but does anything worthwhile? In this issue, we follow Carolyn and Xavier Brandwajn who didn’t pick the worst time in modern history to buy a home. They were featured in a recent House Hunters episode that will have aired just before this magazine was published but will be available online. Take a look at their journey and check out the local scenery! We introduce a new feature this month called “Against the Tide.” Written and photographed by our own Cat Cutillo, this series will focus on unique individuals who embody the spirit of the Coastside, sometimes in unusual ways. Happy Holidays!

Flashback Drag strip put HMB on racing map

A

world-class drag-racing strip! That was the idea that the San Mateo County Kiwanis Club had in the early 1950s. The site would be the newly opened civilian airport near Half Moon Bay. Even in those simpler times, it was amazing that club members were able to accomplish their dream. The organizers needed to overcome objections of both locals and the airport management. The locals didn’t want new activities near them. The Half Moon Bay Airport management was not eager to be distracted from the business of flying. The Kiwanians pulled together and won the support and help of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, Sheriff, National Hot Rod Association, local hot rodding clubs, engineers and grading contractors, and more. The races began in 1957, and revved up to a remarkable level of success. Before Half Moon Bay Drag Strip had its last race, there had been hundreds of head-to-head races, thousands of spectators had flocked to the airport, and the national hot-rodding and sports press made Half Moon Bay a famous name across the country. The Half Moon Bay Drag Strip attracted the very biggest names in the sport. Big Daddy Don Garlits and Don “the Snake” Prudhomme ran there. Drag champ and later movie star Tommy Ivo raced at Half Moon Bay. For more than a decade, the most celebrated names — as well as local drivers — found the drag strip a great source of fun, challenge and recreation. In 1965, there was a fatal mishap and a driver was killed. Ironically, Denny Milani’s accident did not happen while he was trying for speed or victory. He was only staging runs for photographers to use on the pages of a national hot-rodding magazine. The event may have contributed to the end of those local racing days. It was a tragedy, but it also highlighted the fact that performances were becoming so fast that longer tracks were needed for driver safety. Further, the growing popularity of drag racing brought competition from nearby regional drag strips. They were competing for both the top drivers and for spectators. Among the new race sites was the very well operated and promoted Fremont Drag Strip. The

Cotati drags became popular in the North Bay. Meanwhile, increasing speeds by the top fuel performers demanded those longer run-out areas at the end of the Half Moon Bay strip. That was space drivers could not have here. Neighbors in Moss Beach and El Granada were never happy about the newly crowded roads and the positively ear-shattering noise of the nearby drag strip. It was no surprise that the usually quiet and peaceful Moss Beach and El Granada neighborhoods were mostly happy when the last race was run. Half Moon Bay’s drag strip had run its course by 1969. However, the Half Moon Bay Drag Strip experience left a fertile seed that took root some years later. On that same tarmac, the spirit of great and amazing snarling engines remained. Enthusiasm for firebreathing mechanical monsters returned. Lovers of top-of-the-line automobiles, fast warplanes, and all manner of motorized marvels grew up. They became community leaders and philanthropists. They became the founders and volunteers who now host one of the major fundraisers on the Coastside. Half Moon Bay’s Drag Strip ran out of gas, but Pacific Coast Dream Machines took its place. Dream Machines is a 25-year-old descendent of the drag strip. David Cresson is the president of the Half Moon Bay History Association. His historical insights are regularly available in Half Moon Bay Magazine. Learn more about the association at halfmoonbayhistory.org.

Don “The Snake” Prudomme, left, was among the famous drivers who raced here.

The holidays light up

Dec. 4 The whole family will enjoy holiday fun again this year with the 16th annual Night of Lights. From 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday Dec. 4, Main Street in Half Moon Bay will sparkle with lights, holiday cheer, music and dance. Get right into the spirit at the tree lighting ceremony at Mac Dutra Plaza at Kelly Avenue and Main Street, serenaded by Krista Enos’ Tree Lighting Carolers. After that, the young Prince and Princess of the parade will be crowned, and for the first time this year, the runner-up Prince and Princess will also be crowned to ride in the parade in a special train. (These royal children are selected by teachers and community members based on their acts of kindness throughout the year.) Countless local children don sparkling lights for the Parade of Lights at 7 p.m., led by the Half Moon Bay High School Marching Band. Floats and an old-fashioned fire truck will escort Santa to his seat outside the office of the Half Moon Bay Review for photos. Especially for young people, there’s a children’s area at Main Street and Kelly Avenue that will turn into a winter wonderland with face painting, a dress-up booth and a petting zoo. If kids get hungry, there will also be popcorn, cotton candy, candy apples and churros. Visit Candy Cane Lane on Main Street’s 300 block for candy cane and festive holiday décor and surprises. Listen to music and see dancing by Harmony Road, the Peninsula Scottish Fiddlers, Curious Blend, the Hapaluna Hula Dancers and much more entertainment. And don’t forget roasted chestnuts outside of Half Moon Bay Electric. Little partiers will be welcomed at the Community United Methodist Church, which provides babysitting by the Methodist Youth Fellowship Group between 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. And don’t forget that shops and restaurants will be open late for browsers and holiday cheer. 726-8380.

Christmas tamales

A

s far back as she can remember, Violet Marquez has been making, or helping to make, tamales. As a child, she used to make the trek from San Diego to Tijuana, Mexico, with her family to celebrate Christmas in the traditional Mexican fashion. That included preparing the tamales by hand for a big Christmas Eve party. “It’s a whole family event,” said the Montara resident who moved to the Coastside from San Francisco a few years ago. As a child, Marquez remembers her uncles mixing the masa by hand, working for an hour to get the cornbased dough to the right consistency. Today she uses a mixer to accomplish the same results in 10 minutes but still relies on the traditional recipe passed down from her grandmother. Marquez is offering a variety of tamale-making classes in her home this month. The traditional recipe features pork and chicken and the masa is made with pork lard. These tamales are stuffed with potatoes, olives, red or green mole, and jalapeños.

14

Half

Marquez also offers vegetarian and vegan options. The vegetarian version features beans and cheese with the vegan alternative centered around sweet potatoes and collards — a tasty twist on the traditional tamale and one that Marquez says she dreamed up one day. Marquez has even experimented with creating sweet tamales that she makes with brown sugar, butter and golden raisins. Marquez purchases her masa from a specialty store in San Francisco, and many of her other ingredients come from Mi Pueblo in East Palo Alto. The masa is the toughest part to get right, Marquez says, as you don’t want the dough to be too dry or too soft. “They can be finicky,” she said. Marquez’s mother will be present to assist in some of the classes. Marquez said she’s missed participating in the annual tradition with her family and is happy to extend it to her fellow Coastsiders. She is offering classes from Dec. 5 to Dec. 23. For more information email her at VioletMarquez2015@gmail.com.

hen it comes to food, Cooking for Friends caterer Richard Poncini likes to think big. The Half Moon Bay resident is well-known for roasting whole Kalua pigs on-site and for his 52inch paella pan. For Poncini, cooking is a social activity and his business name reflects that. His portable equipment allows him to be part of the party instead of tucked away in a back kitchen. “I’ve always been interested in cooking for large groups, so I thought this was a good way to do this,” Poncini said. Poncini has fond memories of the meals his grandmother would prepare on their farm in Mountain View. Dinners would feature the farm’s own chickens and rabbits. His parents also specialized in the kitchen, Poncini said. His father always prepared the sauces; his mom specialized in jams and preserves. On Christmas Day, Poncini will be putting his paella pan to good use at the Christmas dinner for seniors at the I.D.E.S. Hall and will be offering a vegetarian, gluten-free entrée for seniors to enjoy along with their turkey and stuffing. In preparation, his grocery list will include:

Giovanni Iaccarino of Montara holds an old family photo of his father, Pietro Iaccarino, as an infant. He is being held by his mother, Iaccarino’s grandmother, in their Amalfi Coast homeland. This is one of the only pictures of his grandmother and father together because she passed away when the boy was very young. Iaccarino draws a lot of his cooking inspiration from his Amalfi Coast roots.

Calamari con Sugo Inchiostro

F

ellow Montara resident, Giovanni Iaccarino, is a self-employed caterer with a food science background. His family hails from Italy and the culinary enthusiast specializes in preparing Mediterranean fare. The youngest of three boys, Iaccarino said his mother was looking for someone to help out in the kitchen and Iaccarino willingly signed up for the job. “It was a way for my mom and me to connect,” Iaccarino said. When he thinks about preparing this dish, Iaccarino recalls standing on a chair over the kitchen sink while his mom showed him how to gut and clean the calamari while reserving the ink from near the head and tentacles. “The funnest part of making calamari con sugo inchiostro was getting sprayed by all of the ink from the calamari when cleaning them with my mom,” wrote Iaccarino in an email to the Review. “We would laugh hysterically when one of us got squirted.” Adding the wine corks to the pan is said to keep the squid tender. It may be just an old wives’ tale, Iaccarino said, but it’s part of the process and tradition, and he does it every time he prepares squid or octopus. Below you’ll find his mother’s recipe for calamari con sugo inchiostro — or calamari with squid ink. HMB

12 fresh, medium-sized roma or heirloom tomatoes 1 pound of freshly caught and cleaned calamari with the skin on and ink preserved during cleaning 8 garlic cloves 2 shallots Extra virgin olive oil One bunch of Italian parsley and/or a little basil, if you’d like. Himalayan sea salt Fresh cracked pepper Optional: 1 small red pepper for heat To prepare this dish, start with lightly simmering the garlic and shallots in olive oil. Then add freshly blanched tomatoes (skins off ) to the oil. Smash tomatoes and simmer for about 30 minutes until sauce has a nice consistency. Add the sea salt, parsley, pepper and calamari with a couple of wine corks and simmer for just five minutes at the end. Stir, take off heat and let rest for five minutes before pouring over your favorite pasta. Be careful not to overcook the calamari. Optionally, you can put the calamari with the wine corks at the beginning of making the sauce and slow cook for 45 minutes. The secret to keeping the calamari tender is not to cook them longer than 10 minutes. However, if you do go over 10 minutes keep them in the pan for at least 30 minutes or up to 45 minutes. udy Periat’s infectious smile is the first thing you see when you walk into Stage Road Shop in Pescadero. She has owned the shop for 20 years and is known in the community for always being open, despite stormy weather. So it made sense that when Judy hit some personal turbulence in her own life, her doors didn’t stay closed for long. “Hello,” she says, immediately walking over to new customers. “Stroke, so I can’t explain, but I’m alive, so I’m happy. New and used mixed up. And this one all markdown.” She tours customers through her eclectic mix of clothing, jewelry, art and gift items. Her mention of a stroke usually leads to looks of surprise, sympathy and trust. On June 9, 2008, Periat underwent brain surgery to remove a benign tumor. The next day she suffered a stroke. She was unable to speak for a year, to eat solid food for several months, and it left her confined to a wheelchair in the beginning. She went to live with her sister in San Mateo for a while. “Some people said, ‘Forget it. Sell the shop. She’ll never go back.’ But we said, ‘Give her a year and we’ll see,’” says her brother, Dan Periat, who describes

his sister as a fiercely independent and adventurous eldest child who traveled the world speaking several languages fluently. She never hesitated to go backpacking in the Sierras by herself into her 40s. “I remember several bear stories. She didn’t have a tent. She’d wake up and a bear would be sniffing around her sleeping bag. She’d shoe them away. She wasn’t afraid at all,” says Dan Periat. Her fearless nature halted the initial stay at her sister’s after a short three months. “She said, ‘Enough is enough. I want to go home,’” says Andrea Periat, Judy’s sisterin-law. “Judy is so stubborn, nothing’s going to hold her down. She couldn’t speak or wash her hair even.” “Its like [is it] dish soap or is it shampoo?” say Judy Periat, bursting into laughter.

And getting back to the shop, her home away from home, was even more crucial. Just months after the stroke, she was back at work. It was much more than a job to her. Family said it was her medicine. “She wasn’t feeling well, but she had to come back to work to get better,” says Andrea Periat, who worked alongside her sister-in-law in the beginning to help her relearn such details as how to use the credit card machine. And Judy Periat still couldn’t speak at this point. “People would look at her strange like, ‘What’s wrong with this lady?’” explains her brother. “But she was just

determined to get better.” Cotton Skinner, who is the shop landlord and a lifelong family friend, remembers that courage and determination well. “She worked really hard. She had a machine that spoke with her for a while. Most of us wouldn’t even try,” says Skinner. “I don’t think she’d be where she is today had it not been for the shop,” says Andrea Periat. And where she is today includes the ability to walk and eat again. She’s regained some of her speech and all of her style. In fact, the shop is a true extension of Judy Periat herself. The

chunky turquoise silver rings lining each of her fingers and the bohemian flare of the clothing she wears are reflected throughout the inventory she sells. She still drives all over the Bay Area hunting for merchandise at trade shows and gift fairs. Her business has actually expanded since the stroke. She’s found innovative ways to funnel into the needs of her clients. When Duarte’s Tavern employees didn’t have time to come shopping, she would bring the shop to them, setting up clothes in the back of Duarte’s so employees could shop. “Judy’s really good at knowing what people like and that hasn’t changed at all,” says Andrea Periat. Sometimes, if it’s too hard to explain, she’ll pass customers an index card, which outlines the chain of events that happened seven years ago leading

to her stroke. Her speech is still limited and she communicates through a combination of short sentences, sign language, acting, writing, and when all else fails, laughter. “It’s like a light came on inside of her. She’s just so happy all the time. It’s wonderful to see. She makes everybody else happy.” says Skinner. In fact, Skinner says people have traveled hours to visit Judy Periat again after meeting her just once in the shop. “Her positive attitude makes you feel good. Its amazing how she affects people,” says Skinner. “We could really take a lesson from her. She’s on the path that she chose. It makes her very happy she’s doing exactly what she wants to do. How many of us can say that.” HMB

ven before Carolyn Brandwajn walked into the house in Half Moon Bay’s Ocean Colony neighborhood, she knew she didn’t want it. It had nothing to do with the home itself. Rather, it was the fact that it took her and husband Xavier two hours to get there from their San Mateo home as they wound their way through pumpkin patch traffic on Highway 92. A certified public accountant working in the southern end of San Mateo County, Carolyn worried the commute from Half Moon Bay would prove too daunting. But then she stepped inside the house. “We were completely floored,” Carolyn Brandwajn said. “Everything here was picture perfect.” The Brandwajns, complete with their 2-year-old son and German shepherd, are one of many families that move to the San Mateo County coast each year. Pinel real estate agent Cheryl Stockton, who helped the Brandwajns with their Half Moon Bay home search, says the family is a part of an increasing trend. “I am seeing more and more coastal buyers coming from ‘over the hill,’ both young couples buying their first home and lots of retirees from Los Altos, Atherton, Menlo Park etc. who are looking for the atmosphere and community that defines our neighborhoods,” Stockton said in an email. “Half Moon Bay has been discovered, not just as a great place to come for the weekend or for your pumpkin, but as a great place to live.” Of course, not every home search comes complete with a film crew in tow. But that was the case with the Brandwajns, whose search for a bigger home on the coast was broadcast on the HGTV show “House Hunters” last month. The television show takes viewers into the lives of homebuyers as they tour three houses in a given region and ultimately decide on one to purchase. Price, house size and aesthetics are among a number of factors that prospective homebuyers consider in their decision process. After applying unsuccessfully to be on House

Hunters with their first home search on the peninsula, Carolyn’s second application was accepted. “I watch House Hunters religiously, so I was determined to get on the second time,” she said. The Brandwajns weren’t eyeing Half Moon Bay in the initial stages of their house hunt. It was precipitated by the addition of their young son and dog to their roughly 1,000-square-foot San Mateo house. Seeking a larger space, they first tried to bid on several peninsula fixer-uppers, only to be outbid by those willing to pay more than $200,000 over asking price. After an unsuccessful remodel in an attempt to maximize space, “we were pulling our hair out,” Carolyn Brandwajn said. Then, her husband found listings for homes in Half Moon Bay and pointed out that bigger houses could be had on the coast for fewer dollars. So their home search moved westward. Going into it, the couple knew they wanted a bigger house that would require little updating. Stylistically, Carolyn wanted a French Normandy home while Xavier preferred a craftsman or colonial. They looked at two houses in Ocean Colony, a

neighborhood off Highway 1 near the Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay, and one close to downtown Half Moon Bay. The Spanish style home near downtown was a little smaller than what the Brandwajns were looking for, but it was a new build. However, the family found that its proximity to a school and restaurant weren’t ideal attributes. “It was a nice space for what it was – it just wasn’t for us,” Xavier Brandwajn said. That left the Brandwajns to choose between two Ocean Colony homes, both just under 3,000 square feet with four bedrooms and three bathrooms. One was a brand new build in the French style that Carolyn liked, but its asking price was above the family’s price point. They also thought that the homes on that street were in closer proximity to each other than they found preferable. The other house was 70 percent updated by Carolyn Brandwajn’s estimate, with a remodeled downstairs and more outdated upstairs. “A few things concerned us,” Xavier Brandwajn said. “It was on a main artery, so we thought we’d be seeing a lot of traffic. And we athought b l e Ctheo uyard p owas n a bit small for the size of the house and lot.” The house had also been on the market for a while, or at least longer than what the couple was used to seeing with houses for sale on the peninsula. But Stockton assured the Brandwajns the listing time was typical for the Coastside. By then, the Brandwajns were drawn in by the open-air layout of the house, its size and the light that filtered into the space. There was

another indelible quality of the house, as well. “I was able to picture our son growing up here,” Xavier Brandwajn said. “That was the clear decision-maker for me.” Yet there was one issue that hadn’t been addressed – the traffic. Upon telling Stockton their concerns about their respective Silicon Valley commutes, she advised the couple to come back on a weekday morning so they could mimic their drive to work. “Once we were able to assuage our fear of the commute, the house was perfect,” Carolyn Brandwajn said. The family closed on the house for $1.3 million in January and moved in at the end of February. After spending five 12- to 15-hour days filming, their House Hunters episode aired just after Thanksgiving. With the frenzy of house hunting and filming behind them, the Brandwajns are settling in and enjoying coastal living. “The lifestyle here is one or two notches more relaxed than anywhere else, and we enjoy that,” Carolyn Brandwajn said. Christmas tree varieties and care

A

n evergreen tree decked out in lights and ornaments is one of the universal symbols of the holiday season. The Christmas tree tradition is believed to have originated in Germany in the 15th or 16th centuries, when trees were decorated with edibles, such as nuts and fruits. They were later decorated with candles and eventually lights. Through the centuries, people have trekked to forests, Christmas tree farms and commercial lots to pick the perfect trees for their holiday displays. The National Christmas Tree Association says more than 33 million real trees are purchased each year, making the tree business a billiondollar industry. While there are scores of evergreen varieties, certain tree types are more popular than others and thus more available for purchase. The following are some of the more popular trees come Christmastime. Eastern Redcedar: Branches of the tree are compact and form a pyramid-shaped crown. The trees should be a dark, shiny green color. The eastern redcedar is not a true cedar tree, but a member of the juniper family. This tree can make a great cut tree with a homespun look and a pungent fragrance. Colorado Blue Spruce: An attractive blue-green foliage and a good symmetrical form is what attracts many people to the blue spruce. The Colorado Blue Spruce has an excellent natural shape and requires little pruning to look like the perfect Christmas tree. It’s not very fragrant, but the tree needles may give off an unpleasant odor when crushed. Scotch Pine: A classic conical shape and very good needle retention help make the Scotch pine a popular tree to cut for the holidays. Scotch pines also are quite prevalent thanks to the tree’s adaptability to a wide range of climates. Eastern White Pine: A delicate green color and long needles are found on this tree. Another popular pine, the rich fragrance of the white pine may make it preferable to those who like their homes to smell of evergreen. Douglas Fir: The Douglas fir is one of the foremost Christmas tree species in the United States. It has soft needles that are dark green in color. Those needles radiate in all directions from the branches to give the tree a full look. The needles, when crushed, have a sweet fragrance. Douglas firs tend to live long when cut. Christmas tree maintenance Nothing can guarantee the health and appearance of a tree after it is brought into a home. But choosing a recently cut tree that has good needle retention can help. Here are other tips for a long-lasting tree. Use a sharp saw to cut an inch off of the trunk base to remove the sappy covering that forms from cutting. This will improve water intake. Fill a tree stand reservoir with warm water. Expect the tree to drink heavily in the beginning. Keep the reservoir filled every day and check to see how much water the tree is using. Place the tree far from heaters or other drying sources. — Metro

HomeTips

Maximize winter energy savings with simple tips

A

s temperatures decrease during the fall and winter months, energy usage and costs tend to climb. These five energy-saving tips for your home will ensure the comfort of your family and your wallet. 1. Adjust your thermostat. Lower the heat on your thermostat while you are away from home and before you go to bed. Better yet, invest in a programmable thermostat so you don’t have to give it a second thought. 2. Seal gaps around windows and doors. Cracks and gaps around windows and doors can let cold drafts into your home. Weather-stripping or caulking will seal these problem areas and keep your home warmer, without having to turn up the heat.

3. Insulate well to protect your home from the cold. Add insulation to your basement walls, headers or attic to make a noticeable difference in the temperature of your home and its energy consumption. A mineral wool product specifically designed for thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt, is ideal. This type of batt insulation will also provide protection from fire, moisture and unwanted noise. Adding insulation is one of the simplest and most-cost effective ways to increase home energy efficiency. 4. Make use of natural sources of heat. Pull back your curtains to let natural light in. The sun can help to warm a room with its rays

on a bright fall or winter day. If there are any large windows in your home that don’t receive much sunlight, keep the curtains closed to form a barrier from the cold. 5. Use ceiling fans to your advantage. In the winter, set the fan to rotate clockwise. The blades will pull the air up and around, redirecting warm air that rises back down into the living space. The effect can help you lower your thermostat by two degrees in the winter. While cutting back on energy may seem more challenging as the weather gets colder, it doesn’t have to be. There are many no- or low-cost methods to conserve energy that can provide consistent savings over time. —Metro

Gifts for the gardener Tillandsia air plant

W

ith December and the holidays officially here, I find there is much more to do than just pruning and putting the garden to bed. Below is a list of some universal December chores we get to do in the garden, as well as garden-inspired gifts for the plant-obsessed in your life. It is so fun and gratifying to think about and plan for spring! However, let’s be sure to get the chores done for winter, so the garden is at its healthiest for the upcoming cold and rain. First, edit out what is dead, too big or what no longer serves you and your garden. Second, prune back your trees, shrubs, grasses and perennials. Third, weed and cultivate the soil. Lastly, get ready for the rain by opening up any drainage areas and mulching any open spots in your garden. My favorite two garden tools to use during December are my Felco clippers (for cutting back thick branches, like fruit trees and roses) and T-600 clippers (for quickly slicing through grasses, perennials and vines).

OK, are the chores all complete? Good. Now let’s do some late-season bulb-planting. Normally, the best time to buy and plant bulbs is November, but I actually like to plant a bit later. This time of the season, you can find fragrant daffodils (double-petaled are my favorite) at almost any nursery or online. I suggest planting those in the ground in a way that you would scatter wildflower seeds. My favorite tools to use are Garden Apothecary’s Copper Trowel or Hida Tool’s Japanese Hori Hori knife. They make for quick and easy digging — especially in our clay soil. All of these products make for great gifts for the garden lover, but maybe the garden lover you know isn’t so great at actual gardening. No matter: a simple indoor, easyto- care-for tillandsia air plant will do for a thoughtful and beautiful gift. Unique, yet effortless to grow for most anyone, these air plants have been a huge hit the past few years. Native to South and Central America, these cool-looking epiphytes grow

well indoors with sun and preferably some humidity. Tired of planting the same old white and red cyclamen for “holiday color”? Try adding dashes of brightness and texture to your garden by planting the lovely chartreuse Scotch moss (S. subulata “Aurea”) to brighten a pathway, as edging, or cascading from containers. Another unique and colorful plant for the holidays is oak leaf Hydrangea, with its reddish brown stems and large oakshaped leafs. Often, you can find this plant in the nursery blooming a large cream-colored flower that fades to green. You can plant this in the foreground for the holidays then transplant it to a background location for spring so it can spread out. Jennifer Segale is the owner of GardenApothecary.com and Garden Apothecary on Main Street in Half Moon Bay.

CoastsideCanines Curry Age: 6 months Breed: Labradoodle Half Moon Bay resident Susan West says passersby tell her that her dog reminds them of Snoopy of “Peanuts” fame. It’s a rare day she takes him for a walk without someone coming up to ask about him. “There’s never a day when at least four to five people don’t make a comment, or ask about him,” said West. And it’s no wonder. His statuesque body is covered in wiry yet soft white hair, he has two black ears, and one black eye jauntily peeks from under a fuzzy white brow. His charming demeanor and silky coat invite petting, so he does grab attention. “He’s just a sweet, sweet dog,” said West. “I’ve never seen him bark at anybody.” West was looking for a different kind of dog when she found Curry. She and husband Jerry West had had golden retrievers for years because “we love them.” But West wanted a dog with hair, not fur, since hair does not shed. Poodles, Portuguese water dogs and poodle mixes have hair. West went online and found Asha’s Doodles in Fremont, which specializes in Labradoodle and golden doodles — Labrador/poodle and golden retriever/poodle mixes. They’d had a litter of Labradoodles; one was left. In July, they jumped into their car. “We drove out to see him and drove away with him,” said West. “Never go to see a puppy unless you plan to go home with it.” The little guy seemed to like the Coastside, said West, after the 107-degree Fremont summer heat. He got along well with the Wests’ other dog, 3-year-old golden retriever Calli. Brought to the beach for the first time, Curry stared at the surf and then chased Calli into the water. He quickly adapted to the routines of his new home. “He always knows when it’s time to eat, when it’s time to take a walk,” said West. When she takes the dogs to the beach to romp, Curry resorts to extreme means to keep up with Cali. “He can’t keep up without grabbing on to her tail,” West said. “It’s like, ‘Wait for me!’”

PLACE TO GO

The Barn

Dunes Beach

Dune’s Beach

Though many consider the four-mile beach from the Francis State Beach to the Jetty to be one long Half Moon Bay State Beach, it is actually divided up by access points and each area has its own unique charm, including Dunes Beach.

BILL MURRAY

Tucked in between Roosevelt and Venice beaches, Dunes is as uncrowded as they come and is a great place to park for an adventure on the Coastal Trail, which leads from Pillar Point Harbor down to Poplar Beach. Bring a picnic and find a spot on the blufftops or walk down the dirt ramp to the sand. The clean, wide beach is excellent for Frisbee tossing or a game of football. Altough inconsistent, the surf at Dune’s can often be a hidden gem for surfers when things get too crowded at the jetty. As with all the beaches in Half Moon Bay, large waves and rip currents should be respected. When the tide is low, there is a great opportunity for kids to play in the shallow surf. Pick a day with a minus tide and you’ll be treated with miles of flat, hardpacked sand perfect for a long walk or run. There is no camping allowed here, but there are restroom facilities. The park is open from sunrise to sunset and there is a $10 parking fee for day use. The major weather pattern for Half Moon Bay is fog in the summer, crisp, clear days in the fall and spring, and wet, windy winters. Temperatures are moderate with the summer highs in the mid 60s and winter lows in the mid 40s. Summer fog is most common in the mornings and evenings. If you have a large event or wedding, you’ll need a permit.

PLACE TO EAT

The Barn Bolt to The Barn for burgers after the beach. This new spot on the Coastside is just a few months old, but it has already generated a buzz around the community. The menu is simple and that’s part of the charm. The gourmet hot dogs and chicken sandwiches will do the trick, but the real star is the Barn Burger with the classic ingredients. Feeling fancy? There are plenty of topping options to make it your own like carmelized onions and blue cheese. Pair it with the mac attack (fried macaroni and cheese) and you might just need to skip your next meal. Café lights add warmth to the outdoor seating. Beer and wine if so inclined. 3068 Cabrillo Highway, Half Moon Bay, (650) 560-8363. www.thebarnhmb.com
