An important aspect of getting married isn’t romantic, but it’s necessary. It’s the talk about money. Nobody likes it, but it can save hours of arguments and heartache down the road. Before a couple takes the plunge, they should have an open and honest discussion about their finances. Financial advisors recommend couples talk about their financial priorities and retirement plans, assets and debts. Talking about spending and saving habits will go a long way toward creating a secure financial future for a couple. Jodi Hendrickson, fi-
nancial advisor with Edward Jones in Wahpeton, said creating a budget is the best thing a couple can do. “Usually one or the other will take over the finances when they get married,” she said. “If they don’t have something in writing in a budget, it can be overwhelming for the person who is doing the budget. I think a budget is huge.” One area she said people are unsure of is saving and investing — when to start, how much and where to put it. “People think it takes a lot of money to start investing or saving, but it really doesn’t,” Hendrickson said. “You can start with a minimal

Hendrickson amount, such as $25 a month. I tell people, make it a payment to yourself, so when you’re paying your bills, you are one of your bills and
it goes into that pile. Otherwise, you tend not to save.” The age of the couple can also dictate the type of money conversations
to have. If a couple is on their second marriage or is more established in their career, they may have retirement accounts and life insurance beneficiaries already set up. Those may need to be changed or adjusted with a new marriage. “People hate to talk about life insurance, whether it’s through work or if you have your own policy,” she said. “You need to know if you have enough to cover if something happens to one or the other.” She said couples also need to look at their goals over a 10- or 15-year period, when determining how to invest and save. Is there debt that needs to be paid off?
Are there child support payments going out each month? “Communication is important. What are we going to save for, are we going to buy a house? Are we going to save for a vacation home?” she said. “Communication is a huge thing, and you have to keep on top of it.” Hendrickson said financial advisors have tools and programs that can show clients what their financial situation looks like and budget worksheets to get them started. “If you have children or plan to have children, what’s your goals for them? Experts offer opinions to engaged couples as they BY KAREN SPEIDEL • NEWS-MONITOR newsmonitor@midconetwork.com
Your fiance got down on his knee to propose his endless devotion and love, and you will marry the love of your life. Now the fun of planning your wedding begins. To take some of the stress out of your lives, people who work within the
industry are providing some helpful hints when you begin making plans. Engaged couples have quite a few different people to talk to before the big day, everyone from caterers, florists, event planners and more. Don’t wait too long to make that initial contact. Wedding season is just around the bend and many businesses within the industry fill up fast. “There are things brides and grooms need to know. I would encourage them to talk to their friends who have been recently married. KAREN SPEIDEL | NEWS-MONITOR
Caterer Greg Paulson, who owns Hot Cakes Cafe & Lodging in Hankinson, said the best advice he can give prospective brides and grooms is to have a budget in mind, and know how many guests they plan to serve.
They’ve been through it and probably have a lot of advice to offer,” said Greg Paulson, owner of

think in terms of large wedding parties, but the larger the wedding party, the more it costs to feed them during the meal. Times have changed so the newlyweds don’t
actually have to feed everyone attending their wedding. Paulson said some brides and grooms are opting for a more intimate dinner with limited family and friends, then have a much larger reception. “Prepare that every time you add people to your list, you are adding money somewhere,” he said. Before talking to caterers, know your price range and meal preference. Paulson said your meal doesn’t have to be chicken and steak. He’s seen more taco and fajita bars, or soup and sandwiches on the menu. After speaking about catering, other experts offer sage advice before the big day.

Heather Haberman, owner of Heather Ann’s Floral in Hankinson, advises people to think about colors ahead of time. “Know what colors you like, and what colors you don’t like,” Haberman said. That’s a good place to start. It’s also important to have contrasting colors in your wedding, especially when it comes to floral choices. If you pick flowers that exactly match your colors, then the flowers themselves will blend into the background and will not be visible, she said. Haberman suggests picking a shade lighter or darker than your wedding colors to make the

floral arrangements pop. Flowers are a very important aspect of a wedding because they are virtually seen in every picture. “Flowers will live on forever, because you will see them every time you look at your wedding pictures,” she added. Caterer – check. Flowers – check. Reception hall – ? Brenda Marzigliano manages the Hankinson Community Center. She said there are definitely items people should be thinking about before they approach her about renting the Community Center. Check about potential venue locations ahead of time to see if they are big enough for your festivi-
ties and keep a budget in mind. “Plan a budget and do your research to see what each place has to offer,” Marzigliano said. “Never go over your budget. Some people ruin their day by over spending and making it too elaborate. Your reception can be just as beautiful if you are shopping wise. You don’t want to start your marriage off in debt,” Marzigliano added. Once you do a walk through, don’t worry about asking too many questions, that way they can make an educated rental decision, she said. The average wedding tends to be one of the

Music sets the perfect ‘tone’ for your wedding
BY MATTHEW LIEDKE • DAILY NEWS mattl@wahpetondailynews.com
From the soft melodies that play during dinner to the thunderous beats heard during the dancing, music plays an integral part to any wedding reception. Local DJ Travis Tischer explained that the process begins many months before the big day, though. “When someone first calls and is inquiring about a wedding, I start by asking a variety of things,” Tischer said. “First off, I get the basics, the date, time and venue. It’s early in the planning process and not everything is set in stone, but it gives me an idea. “I then ask if they prefer more classical hits or mod-

The Wahpeton native explained that on one night at a school dance he and a friend thought they could do a better job than the DJ. “We also had a mowing business and that’s how we paid for the equipment,” he said. About a year or two later, he started working weddings. Tischer said last year he deejayed about two dozen wedding receptions, and the majority take place during the summer. Over time, Tischer has compiled a huge variety of music. He now has close to 100,000 songs in his library. “What helps in this digital age is a lot of the venues have WiFi now, so if I don’t have a song
(requested), I can just go on iTunes and download it,” he said. People often request classics, such as Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing.” “I’ve always enjoyed providing the means for people to have a good time through music,” he said. “It’s pretty rewarding when you can have guests and couples, even years down the line, remember that night. Obviously I’m not the thing they’re remembering, but it’s good to help make the night go smoothly.” Travis Tischer at TC DJ Mobile Entertainment can be reached at 701-640-4805 or visit www.tcdjmobileentertainment.com for more information.

Tischer gives two options. The first is called a Classic Package and the other is the Deluxe Package. “The Classic is suited for up to 200 people. It includes an LED light show, two hours of dinner music and four hours of reception, so you get six hours of entertainment,” Tischer said. “The Deluxe is for more than 200 people. It’s basically upgraded sound and lighting and includes an extra hour during dinner. For example, some couples have an hour social prior to the dinner that they use it for.” Tischer said that he has been getting experience in the DJ industry since he was a student in middle school, starting out in 2001.

most costly ventures in a couple’s life together. Many couples seek ways to cut costs, and negotiating with prospective vendors is one way to do just that. Too often couples overlook haggling for better prices because they may be intimidated by the process or simply want to plan the most memorable day regardless of cost. Many vendors build some wiggle room into their prices, and the key for cost-conscious couples is to find the right strategy to unlock that lower price. • Explore your options. Weddings are big business for vendors, and the competition is stiff. Visit
a variety of vendors and compare their services and prices prior to making any decisions. This will give you an accurate range of costs and information for future negotiations. Vendors may be willing to match competitors’ prices, so knowing what the photographer down the street charges can provide you with some negotiating leverage. • Never take the first offer. A good business person will tell you there always is room for negotiation. Avoid the loaded question of “What can you spend on this?” by the vendor. Instead, let them bring up a price first, and realize that this first quote can almost always be negotiated down. Inform the
vendor that you would really like to work with them but he or she needs to lower the price. See if they can offer a different package or provide a discount. • Negotiate the bigticket items first. Discounts on big-ticket items, such as the reception venue, will save you the most money. For example, you will save more by getting 20 percent off at the catering hall than if you save 20 percent on your wedding gown. Once you free up extra money, you may find you don’t have to negotiate as hard with smaller vendors. • Walk away if need be. Always have a Plan B in place. This way if you tell a vendor that their price

is too expensive and you have to pass, you really have a fall-back option. Some vendors will sweeten the deal, but others will actually let you walk out the door. And remember, you’re more likely to get a better price by being amenable and wellmannered than making threats or arguing. • Some deals aren’t actual discounts. A vendor may be able to work with you by offering additional services in lieu of actually taking money off of the price tag. Extra photo prints, a dessert bar and an extra hour of time in the limousine may seem like great deals, but that’s only the case if you truly need these bonuses. Even if it’s a great deal, you’re still spending more than you had hoped.

save money for college or will they get their own student loans,” she asks.
