From the Mayor’s desk

David M. Smith Mayor, City of Bisbee

BISBEE DIRECTORY

T

his last year was my first full year as Mayor and certainly active in many ways. It has brought us a professional City Manager and with his assistance and help from the iBisbee committee, renewed energy toward economic development. October brought us the tragedy of our historic city hall burning, resulting in a total loss. We were immediately welcomed into the county facilities by our Cochise County elected officials and management team. We are fully operational as a city and looking forward to the next chapter in our city life. In spite of these distractions, Bisbee is moving forward through the development and enactment of programs resulting in additional revenues as well as innovative cost reduction plans. It has been my pleasure to be the Mayor of Bisbee as we receive international awards as one of the Top 14 Places to Visit in the World, the Best Small Town in America, as well as numerous further accolades. Come play, stay, eat and have a wonderful time in our beautiful city.

The Manager’s minute B

ecoming a city employee (shortly after helping our team through the City Hall fire) is a highpoint in my career as a public servant. In the four months since, we have been working on projects that will help change the city’s financial circumstances for the better – and that has been a top priority, given the $1.2 million extra we now have to pay each year for PSPRS. At 22% of our operational budget, this new, extra cost has made it impossible for us to continue on without changing a few things. Ongoing projects, while slower than we’d like, remain on track and our paving program is actually a few years ahead of schedule.

Recent completion of the pool solar project and a few park/ recreation projects should be beneficial as we enter spring. Current tourism, building and economic indicators show an uptick in activity – I’m very hopeful that this year will be a turnaround year for us. My wife and I bought a home in Bisbee on Santa Cruz Drive, and we are struggling with boxes and all the work associated with moving in and making things comfortable. Soon, my father-in-law will join us, and my daughter will be visiting across the summer. We are all looking forward to settling in, putting down roots and making some new friends! Robert E. San Jose

Old Bisbee is the historic center of town. The very walkable Main Street turns into Tombstone Canyon as you head uphill, and serves as the main thoroughfare of the town offering vistas the howdid-they-do-that crafty homes that hang form the hillsides. From the centrally located Bisbee Mining and Historical Museum, visitors can also head up the notorious Brewery Gulch and check out the graffiti that dots the empty lots and old walls and climb the stairs to City Park for a view up the Gulch.

The Warren district of Bisbee has a unique history all its own. Warren was designed according to the City Beautiful plan, at the turn of the century. The neighborhood is the first planned community in Arizona intended as a home for the mine management and other more affluent citizens of the town. Warren has a fine collection of Arts and Crafts style bungalow houses. Many have been recognized as historic places. The city offers an annual Historic Home Tour during which a varying selection are offered for public display.

Lowell was, at one time, a sizable mining town located just to the southeast of Old Bisbee. The majority of the original townsite was consumed by the excavation of the Lavender Pit mine during the 1950s. However, what remains of Lowell today is a strikingly intact, historical midcentury street — often utilized as a backdrop for film and video shoots — and well worth a visit to walk back in time. Lowell is perched at the southern end of the dramatic Lavender Pit, itself a must see.

The San Jose section of Bisbee is where much of the town’s commercial shopping is done. From food to 2 x 4s, you can find the deals on Naco Highway. The district is known for its smaller homes, fenced yards and the tradition of passing the homes down through generations. Bisbee is the seat of Cochise County and the offices are found there in San Jose.

Things to see Evergreen Cemetery Established in 1892, Evergreen replaced the Old City Park cemetery in Brewery Gulch, which was upslope from the drinking water wells. Several astute folks of the late 19th century suggested that such a situation might pose a health risk to the early residents of Bisbee. By order of the Common Council of Bisbee in 1914, the transfer of the residents from the old cemetery to Evergreen had begun. Today, there are over 10,000 burials in the cemetery. Evergreen Cemetery now features a kiosk that indicates where certain people are buried. There are many interesting old headstones and the baby section is sure to tug at your heart strings. Old Douglas Road, Lowell

Warren Ballpark The ballfield is (arguably) the oldest continuously-operated baseball diamond in the U.S. Historically, copper has been the community’s work, but baseball is its play. When the Warren town site was laid out in 1906, a spot was reserved for Warren Ballpark. The first game was played there June 27, 1909. The Ballpark was originally built to give mine workers and their families a chance to watch baseball on lazy summer nights. The cost of construction was $3,600. In its early years, the Warren field hosted town, company and semipro teams. In November 1913, the Chicago White Sox and the New York Giants battled it out at Warren as part of an international tour to drum up interest in baseball. The game purportedly featured five future Hall of Famers: outfielders Tris Speaker and Sam Crawford, catcher Ray Schalk, manager John McGraw, and

pitcher Red FAber, who would go on to become the majors’ last legal spitball pitcher. Also competing that day was 1912 Olympic hero Jim Thorpe, who would eventually be inducted into the Football Hall of Fame. He hit a home run to help the Giants win. The first organized minor league team, the Bisbee Bees, began playing in Warren in 1928, in the Class D Arizona State League. Bisbee teams have been farm clubs of the Chicago Cubs, the Los Angeles Angels and the New York Yankees, and some famous names have passed through town. Future Yankees player and manager Billy Martin played at Warren for the Phoenix Senators in 1947. The stadium still hosts a vintage “Base Ball” tournament each year, with teams from throughout the southwest competing according to 19th century rules and sporting era-appropriate uniforms. Originally located in a corner of the company store across the street, the Copper Queen was the first public library in Arizona. The current structure, built in 190506, is notable for its prominent three story high arches. The ground floor is occupied by the town’s central post office, the second and third floors by the Bisbee Public Library. It’s collections range from the original Pritchard donation of some 400 classic volumes to the most current titles (including print, audio, video and electronic) in art, literature, history, politics, medicine, science, and popular culture. Friends of the Copper Queen Library is an association that sponsors educational and volunteer programs in connection with and support of the library. 6 Main Street, PO Box 1857, Bisbee, AZ 85603, 520-432-4232 XNLV375851

Take a hike Copper Miner (Iron Man sculpture)

Bisbee’s Heritage Stairs One of Bisbee’s most magnificent architectural achievements are the countless concrete stairs that cling to the steep canyonsides. Lack of flat land and the need for miners and bosses to reside near their workings led to the construction of hundreds of hillside homes beginning in the late 1870s. The owners and occupants of the irregularly shaped, sometimes nearly vertical, parcels had to develop dependable routes to reach their properties. The sturdy early Bisbeeite initially relied on precipitous trails featuring switchbacks. However, these winding inclines soon proved impractical as they were difficult to maintain

and became slippery in wet weather. Next, the clever canyon-side dwellers constructed a network of wooden stairs, often resembling ladders. The wooden stairs provided straight up and down access to the dwellings from the canyon floor. This, however, changed in the 1930s. Many of the major concrete stairways we still see today were constructed during the 1930s by the Works Progress Administration, one of the federal government’s back-to-work programs. ‘WPA’ was often pressed into the concrete or tagged on an embedded bronze plaque. It is still common for nice houses to be situated on a parcel that is accessible only by climbing 100 or 200 steps to reach the front door. Come explore our stairs...there are thousands of them.

Bisbee Mining and Historical Museum

With a history deserving of National Landmark status, it’s only fitting that Bibsbee’s past be captured and reflected in a museum like no other — which is exactly why the Bisbee Mining and Historical Museum recently joined forces with the Smithsonian’s Affiliation program.Once known as the Quee of the Copper Camps, Bisbee is nestled amon the Mule Mountains, world renowned for its diverse minerals and wealth of copper. Although its mines closed in the ‘70s, the small town’s legacy has long been preserved, not only in its architecture and mining landscape, but in a museum that has welcomed, educated and entertained more than a half-million visitors ever since. Featured among its exhibits is “Bisbee: Urban Outpost on the Frontier,” an in-depth look at the depths - and heights - to which miners and settlers went to carve a community and a living out of rock. isbee artist Poe Dismuke is working on an idea to combine Bisbee’s mining past with art of today to create a mad hatter, steam punk-style bench for the public to enjoy at Grassy Park to celebrate the Bisbee Arts and Culture District. Dismuke worked with Carrie Gustavson, director of the Bisbee Mining and Historical Museum and member of the nonprofit Arts and Culture Committee that oversees the district, and pooled ideas and resources to come up with the only-in-Bisbee, 12-foot bench. It will be made of parts from old mining equipment. As you enjoy the sites, tastes and scents of Old Bisbee, take a break, relax and do some peoplewatching from the bench that will have them staring back at you. The Arts and Culture Committee, a private organization, oversees the district of Old Bisbee which takes in the area around Main Street, Subway Street and Brewery Avenue encompassing most of Bisbee’s art galleries, entertainment venues, shops and restaurants. Bisbee’s arts and cultural events are just as essential to the town’s identity as its historic mining heritage. The district designation can help build the economy by enhancing non-arts businesses and providing job opportunities, while offering ways for everyone to be engaged in activities associated with the arts and culture.
