hen you think of what makes the Coastside special, you probably think of strolling along the Coastal Trail or gazing at the mighty Pacific Ocean or the peels of fog that roll over the Santa Cruz Mountains. Maybe you think of your friends or local traditions like the Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival.

But you might also call to mind the people and businesses that make living on the coast different from being anywhere else. It might be a favorite coffee shop that knows your order or a handyman who you can trust. The publication you hold in your hand is devoted to just such coastal favorites.

This year’s Readers Choice awards went to old friends and some newer favorites. We received 37,495 votes and 3,192 nominations, all from busy readers who cared to share their experiences. It’s not scientific and it would be wrong to say that all of these entries are necessarily the “best” at what they do. These are simply local institutions that have earned the respect of devoted patrons.

It’s an honor to put together our Readers Choice. We know how much hard work goes into each of these businesses and services. We chose just a few to highlight but we could have featured anything on the list.

here is the best breakfast on the coast, you ask? Why, you can’t do better than a breakfast with airplanes, of course!

Nestled right on the tarmac of the Half Moon Bay Airport, 3-Zero Café has been dishing out delightful breakfasts to tourists and locals alike for years. Aviation aficionados will love the charming décor in this classic diner, filled with all types of model airplanes, vintage airline posters and Air Force memorabilia, with real planes taking off just outside.

While the ambiance alone is enough to merit a visit, the food does not disappoint. The menu is stocked with traditional breakfast fare of eggs, English muffins, sausage, bacon, hotcakes and potatoes. Specials have catchy airplane-theme names like “Catch-22,” “Barnstormer,” and “Half Moon

Bay Pilot’s Plate.” The brioche French toast, dipped in vanilla-cinnamon-Kahlua batter and topped with fresh fruit, is always a favorite, as is the crab benedict.

And the kids love the Mickey Mouse pancakes. Wash it all down with a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice and a cup of steaming hot joe.

If you’re planning on a weekend brunch, know that tables fill early in this popular breakfast spot.

Just take your time, relax and enjoy watching the planes as you wait for your perfect breakfast table.

HMB SOCIETY GATHERS AT THIS MAIN STREET EATERY

I

t’s the idyllic café scene. Locals sit at tables in the bright, airy space, sipping lattes and typing on laptops. A couple shares a toasted ham-andcheese croissant at a small table outside as the sun fights its way through the morning fog. Inside, the clank of washing dishes and whir of the espresso machine harmonize with the mingled jazz and salsa music playing on the speakers.

It is just the sort of community-centered, independent café one would picture on Half Moon Bay’s scenic Main Street. It is also just what owner Harpo Marx was hoping to create when he opened Café Society three years ago.

Café Society sits on the space previously occupied

by M Coffee, a fixture in Half Moon Bay for decades.

With Café Society, Marx has preserved all the

local charm and intimacy of the community coffee shop while adding a few enhancements of his own, including live jazz every Friday, his personally selected fair trade, organic coffee beans, and local, homemade pastries.

The café also serves wine and beer in the evening, making it an equally pleasant place to start your day with a latte and bagel or end it with a glass of wine and some jazz.

FRET AND FIDDLE HAVE CULTIVATED FOLLOWING

I

t’s a Saturday night on Main Street, and music is spilling out of Half Moon Bay Wine and Cheese Co. Fiddlers’ bows fly over strings. The bodhran beats the time to a traditional Irish jig. Feet begin to tap and hands to clap. The reason is none other than Fret and Fiddle, this year’s Readers Choice Award winner for local musical group.

The band had its debut in early 2013, when three violin players, Leslie Conaghan, Julie Gerth and Tim Stephenson, got together with Dave DeLang on guitar to play as part of the Coastside Community Orchestra’s 30th anniversary celebration.

Conaghan is married to an Irishman and had just returned from the Emerald Isle, where she had learned a few traditional tunes. She shared these with the group, they threw in some bluegrass and Fret and Fiddle was born. The group later added Lynn

Markwell on the jumbo fiddle, Rob Carey on guitar and Christy Tillotson on the Celtic drum called the bodhran.

Fret and Fiddle delights in performing at local events and has played gigs at New Leaf Community Market, Cameron’s Pub and the Half Moon Bay Brewing Co. as well as venues over the hill.

Members also love to share their music with the community, playing a free concert about once a month for Senior Coastsiders and donating a free gig for the Hatch Elementary School auction.

Wherever they go, it is almost impossible not to be caught up in the infectious joy these musicians take in creating their music. As fiddler Stephenson states on the band blog, the feeling after almost every gig is just, “Wow, that was awesome fun!”

MONTARA STATE BEACH IS FAVORITE OF LOCALS

T

he Coastside is known for its beautiful beaches, but one beach stands above the crowd among Half Moon Bay Review readers. Montara State Beach is the winner of the 2018 Readers Choice Award for both favorite beach (and also for favorite whale watching spot.)

This wide, mile-long stretch of gleaming white sand is nestled into the sculpted sandstone cliffs that line Highway 1 just south of Devil’s Slide. Montara Mountain towers over this secluded alcove, with access to hiking trails and stunning views of the Pacific.

Visitors love this beach because it is exceptionally clean and usually not too crowded. It is perfect for building sandcastles, surfing, romantic strolls, kite flying, barbecues and sunsets.

It is also a great spot from which to view marine life, including tide pool critters like hermit crabs, sea

stars and anemones, shorebirds like pelicans and snowy plover, and even marine mammals such as seals, sea lions and dolphins. Lucky naturalists may even catch a glimpse of a migrating gray or humpback whale.

There are two access points to Montara State Beach: one across the highway from 2nd Street in Montara and the other about half a mile north on the west side of Highway 1. Both involve a steep descent down paths or stairs to the beach, and if you have to cross the busy highway, be careful. A visit to this precious Coastside gem is definitely worth the trek.

f you want to find the best place to eat, a good bet is to look for a line. That certainly holds true for the San Benito House Garden Deli.

Every day by 11 a.m., a line starts forming at the deli counter. On busy weekends, the line can easily stretch out the door until well past the lunch hour.

Is it the selection of fresh deli meats – turkey, pastrami, roast beef ? Or do they come for the cheese, hummus, avocado and PB&J? Could it be the homemade soups? Maybe hungry eaters are simply drawn to the giant, six-inch peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies or the thick chocolate walnut brownies.

Those are all great, but the real thing that sets San Benito House apart is its Old World bread: soft, freshly baked and oh so good! Choose from whole wheat, French or olive walnut. While you’re at it, buy

a loaf to take home.

Once your sandwich is made, you can eat it on the patio, which is almost as lovely as that delicious bread. The tables are surrounded by flowers and plants and there is often live music to entertain you, like the songs of local singer/songwriter Chris Mendoza.

ontara native Kelsey Laffen was destined to work with animals. As a child, she was active in 4-H, had herds of goats, schools of fish and “the best dog ever,” a huge half German shepherd with Labrador and husky mixed in.

When she was 9 or 10 years old, she got her first job in pet care, taking a neighbor’s dog on walks. All through high school and college, pet care was the job she gravitated toward.

But it wasn’t until she graduated that she decided that this was more than just a way to earn some extra cash. This was her calling.

She moved back home to Montara about two years ago and started The Muttley Krew, offering personalized pet care services for the Coastside. Her services include dog walks, home visits, boarding, cat visits and other pet care, all tailored to the needs of her clients.

She is also getting certified in dog training and will soon be able to offer that as well.

As her string of unanimous fivestar ratings on Yelp attest, Laffen is extremely popular with her customers, whether they have two legs or four.

“Kelsey does such a good job that Toby doesn’t want to come home when we pick him up,” said one reviewer.

or those who know her, it is no surprise that Nicole Merlo was voted the 2018 Readers’ Choice Favorite Teacher. The Coastside native has had a passion for working with young children ever since she was little more than a child herself.

She started out as a mother’s helper when she was only 10 years old, then had her first summer job in childcare when she was 12, taking care of a 2-month-old baby while the mother worked at her home office.

After years of babysitting, childcare and nanny positions, she decided to take the next step to become a teacher.

Merlo now has nine years of preschool teaching experience on the coast, three years at Holy Family Children’s Center and six years at Picasso Preschool, where she is currently the teacher for transitional kindergarten.

“Nicole is very compassionate and creative,” said Candise D’Acquisto, director of Picasso Preschool. “All the kids love her, and she treats and loves each kid like they are her own.”

Merlo loves to bring creative, handson activities to her teaching, like a science experiment making slime.

“My favorite part of teaching is that moment when the kids discover something new and are just so proud of themselves,” said Merlo. “I love to watch them grow.”

No job is too small,” is Brian Cox’s motto. The local handyman has been using his diverse skills to keep his customers happy for decades, earning him the title of 2018 Readers Choice Award for Favorite Handyman/Repairman.

Cox is a real Jack of all trades, with skills in carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, fencing, landscaping, irrigation repair and more. He can fix a broken chair, patch up a hole in the drywall, trim a cockatiel’s wooden perch, or pick up a propane tank.

“Truly, I wouldn’t have been able to manage without him!” said long-time customer, Chrysann Rudig. She said that she’s been calling Cox to help maintain her house and skincare salon, “Abundance,” for more than 15 years.

“He is always prompt and his rates are great because he gets a great deal done in an hour.”

Mary Lou Hely of Ocean Colony is another happy customer. She has been using Cox to help maintain her home for 16 years. “Whatever I need done, all these little things that happen, I just keep a list of them for him. I give him a key and, when I come home, everything is done,” said Hely.

One time she said that Cox tried to fix a timer for a gas fireplace that wasn’t working properly. He spent two hours tinkering before he decided the timer was defective and needed to be replaced.

Since he couldn’t actually fix her problem, he didn’t charge Hely a dime.

“That’s Brian. He goes the extra mile,” she said.

Alena Jean Whiting grew up surrounded by the artistic use of plants. The daughter of local landscape designers Jerry and Nancy Whiting of Flora Farm, Whiting watched her parents work with bloom, stem and leaf to create stunning landscapes.

In 2005, Whiting opened up her own nursery and flower shop in her father’s old barn at 340 Purissima St. Soon her business was blooming as both locals and tourists discovered her charming shop and flare for flower arranging. Her bouquets are whimsical and rare, mixing roses, lilies and other traditional blooms with more eccentric items like fuzzy seed pods, wild

oats, air plants or dramatic branches.

Besides personal arrangements, Whiting also caters to those putting on special events and weddings. Her Yelp reviews are gushing with grateful brides and photos of their gorgeous bouquets, boutonnieres, arches and decorated cakes, each one a unique piece of art.

She has even bailed out a bride or two when disaster strikes. Once, she created a beautiful wedding bouquet in less than 30 minutes for a desperate bride whose flowers were already shriveling right before her walk down the aisle.

COASTAL ARTS LEAGUE CULTIVATES ART, FOLLOWING

L

ocal arts flourish in Half Moon Bay thanks to the support of the Coastal Arts League.

This nonprofit organization was founded in 1979 with the mission to connect and support local artists in the Coastside region.

Through its gallery and store, the Coastal Arts League provides both a place for local artists to exhibit their work and a place for art lovers to enjoy it. Member artists can pay for a space to display pieces for sale in the gallery store. The League also hosts a rotating monthly exhibition in the Decker Gallery, including several juried shows each year.

The Coastal Arts League also encourages art in the community by hosting free classes to seniors and children. Once a week, Coastal Art League volunteers teach a class at Senior Coastsiders and another class for children at the Main Street Park apartments.

Every May, Coastal Arts League also offers gallery space free of charge to students at Half Moon Bay High School. Many students look forward all year to this opportunity to display their art in the community and receive real-world gallery experience.

avericks Surf Shop isn’t just another surf store. It is owned and operated

by Jeff Clark, the legendary big-wave surfer who successfully navigated the swells at Mavericks alone for years and who brought worldwide fame to the epic Coastside wave. It’s no surprise that Clark’s surf shop would be nothing less than extraordinary.

The store is filled with all of Clark’s own custom gear and boards, much of it designed for the rugged surf and coast of Northern California. Clark is not only an amazing surfer; he is also a third-generation carpenter and began shaping his own boards at the age of 13. Clark has personally designed, ridden and perfected every shape in his line of boards. Visitors may even see Clark himself as he checks in on this flagship shop in Pillar Point Harbor.

New surfers can rent longboards, shortboards, wetsuits, and bodyboards to try to catch their own Coastside waves. The shop also carries T-shirts, hats and hoodies for everyone, as well as a collection of ocean-inspired gift items.

There are some iconic Coastside locations and businesses, but few are more important to the vibe than this well-established surfing hub, just a short walk from the famous wave that bears its name.
