HERALD/REVIEW

A5

ON YOUR MIND

The front page of the Monday, Sept. 8, Herald was very depressing. New economic director dies, local scout leader diagnosed with cancer, Bisbee firefighter dies, Old Divide road is still divided. Depressing, depressing, depressing, depressing! Couldn’t you have slipped in a small happy story? Like the news that broke out that morning, Prince Williams and Kate are expecting baby number two. Let’s start the week out with at least one happy story. Think happy! September 10 The Bisbee city council, what a mess. Gene Conners... doesn’t know how to act in public. I don’t know what kind of upbringing he had but I’m sure his mother taught him better. He runs everybody down... Something has got to be done...What is his problem? I think (Arizona Attorney General Tom) Horne has to get a call so he can straighten this out with City Hall in Bisbee. The city manager does nothing; nobody does anything to stop it. It’s like a crazy thing to do. But, Conners, you need to go... ...ADOT comes to town to bemoan the fact that the demographics of automobiles are changing and therefore they need more money to maintain the roads because transportation is vital to the economy of the state. I can agree that transportation is vital to the economy of the state and the purpose of roads is to transport people. Perhaps they should consider saving money by not doing projects like putting in center islands on Highway 92, which does nothing to improve safety. In

I’d like to thank the trash man who made sure to put our trash can up on the sidewalk and out of the ravine during the flood. After he emptied it he put it right back up on the sidewalk so that our trash can wouldn’t flow “down river,” if you will. So thank you to the men and women who take care of our waste management. ADOT Public Affairs Manager Kathy Boyle wants to see the gas tax go up because our gas tax is the 43rd lowest in the nation at 19 cents. The national average is 49 cents. She’s looking at it wrong. That means we are the seventh from the best tax rate. The best tax rate would be zero. It encourages businesses, enterprise and people to live here. We should maybe look at lowering it. The Huachuca City arsons were not a citywide event. They occurred in one trailer park, the one on the way out of town toward Sierra Vista. No one was charged or arrested. It was strongly suspected that the arsonist is the one who called OYM; as it’s in his best interest to have the people who live in that trailer park believe the arsonist is caught. It’s all bunk. Was reading Public Notices on Sept. 10, the state is either getting bigger, or someone does not know the location of cities outside the state. For the Test & Evaluation Strategic Technologies, LLC, a member is listed as working in Huntsville, AZ. Really believe that should be Alabama. EDITOR’S NOTE: The public notice was in error. It has since been re-published to reflect that it is indeed Alabama. Ron Barber’s attack ads on Martha McSally are an insult to my intelligence. The Republicans already control the House of Representatives so everything she is being accused of could have been done by the Republicans in the house and they have not. Also he says he wants to help the middle class but the financial burden of every social program he supports is borne mostly by the middle class. September 11 Castle and Cooke has no compassion. We live on the golf course and with the last three rains we have had our pool and our house flooded with mud water. Castle and Cooke refuse to dig a trench to divert the flooding onto our property. Diana Boone did a fantastic job on my wedding dress and on my matron of honor’s dress. She does beautiful embroidery, too. I just want everyone to know. I’m so disappointed about the political advertising. I cannot understand why they think all negativity advises us voters whom to vote for. We want to know what these candidates can do positively for our country and us. Please quit this negativity. It is not only degrading to the candidates, it is extremely degrading to voters. Save the dollars on your negative

advertising and be positive. How stupid do you think we voters are? About Carl’s Jr.: I appreciate that you hire people who are not as up to date as normal people. The only thing that I can see that your restaurant has going for it is you have the best onion rings in town. I’ve yet to get a hot, fresh hamburger when I come in there. They must cook them in the morning and serve them in the evening. They’re ridiculous. Nice big sandwiches and always cold. I see that you mop the floors but I don’t know who is doing the mopping because as you walk across the floor your feet stick to it.... The ads that (Michael) Bloomberg is financing against (GOP

voucher program. September 12 Received my yearly tax notice yesterday for a property in Cochise County (Whetstone area) and just about had a heart attack. Tombstone school district taxes went from $453.22 to$775.68. This is outlandish. I don’t mind paying my fair share but an increase of over $322 needs an explanation. EDITOR’S NOTE: Several news stories have been published about the finances of the Tombstone district and why that tax rate went so high. Want to know more about Arizona’s 2014 ballot measures? congressional candidate Martha) McSally are ridiculous. First off they say she is being financed by the “rich people”. Who is richer than Bloomberg? The other ad where two men in suits are kicking dirt in McSally’s face really don’t make the Obamacrats look too good. Then you have the ads that fault McSally for not wanting to infringe on the Second Amendment. How can that be a bad thing? Bloomberg and Obama want to get the ball rolling on taking my guns and yours away because some crazies go out and shoot people. The facts about the $716 billion from Medicare: The Affordable Care Act introduced reductions aimed at insurance companies and hospitals, not beneficiaries. The CBO found these changes would strengthen Medicare by $716 billion. Not a penny was cut from beneficiaries. This was confirmed by all reputable news sources. But the GOP keeps lying about it while Martha McSally is on record as promoting the privatization of Social Security, raising the retirement age and turning Medicare into a

LOCAL-STATE September 9 I read in today’s Herald the voter turnout for the primary statewide was 27 percent of eligible voters. That leaves 73 percent that will be at the forefront of complaints against politicians. Independents in particular had a chance to shape the future of Arizona politics and they chose to stay home. I have to admit I am going to join the no voters. The television ads over the CD2 race are so full of baloney that I give up. No more trips to the ballot box for me. Issues don’t matter; money and special interests drive the results.

fact, they lessen safety, proven by the fact that they had to lower the speed limit after they did that....

to hire someone. After several phone calls, we found a jewel in Sierra Bonita Landscape. Friendly, courteous and knowledgeable, they did an outstanding job. We highly recommend Sierra Bonita. Call Irene today because we promise you will not be disappointed. Please join me in contacting Sierra Vista’s management team and our county board of supervisors to request that they request ADOT to smooth the road surfaces of Highway 92 in the area of Avenida Cochise by simply grinding down the bumps. Thank you. Thank you to Jeff Greeson for commenting in today’s Herald. He brought to my attention something that I wish I’d known a long time ago about writing in “none of the above.” I have often refrained from voting for a single candidate, or sometimes even the two candidates as in 2008. I didn’t realize that if you wrote in “none of the above” it would be calculated and shown in the result. I will certainly do that in the future. And again, thank you Jeff Greeson. Now (David) Smith who’s running for mayor is starting to sling mud. (Ron) Oertle never said anything about having six officers or more of anything. He said it would be nice. If he would open his ears and listen. I thought he was going to run a clean campaign? All I can say is go vote on Nov. 4 for Ron Oertle. I see more people have been writing in about Jacqueline O’Conner and what she puts in the paper. They seem to forget she came from California where she was a tiny fish in a huge ocean. So she came to small town Arizona where she hoped she’d be a big whale in a tiny pond. “Meet Your Candidate,” is hosted by the Tea Party. I always take advantage of this opportunity to ask my favorite candidate questions pressing my curiosity. On Aug. 6, I asked a judicial candidate several questions, which I will list in OYM, periodically. One question I forgot to ask him is this: “During an on-going harassment contest between neighbors, is it appropriate for the presiding judge to give strategic advice to the plaintiff in the absence of the defendant and not give similar advice

to the defendant?” Yes or no? NATION-WORLD September 5 Katie Couric has been busy since leaving the NBC “Today Show”. She has gone to “CBS Evening News”, then to ABC News, then to the “Katie Show” and now to Yahoo News. After this stop, the only destination left is Fox News. But to join the Fox Network, she would have to undergo the mandatory Fox News staff lobotomy. I’d hate to see that happen to her. September 6 For most Americans, Obamacare has been dreadful. We are paying higher premiums and deductibles, have fewer health care choices, go through an administrative maze where one wrong answer means we don’t get the treatment, and not only do we not get to keep our doctors, but we don’t get to keep our insurance. Nevertheless, some individuals have benefited. Acknowledgement of this shouldn’t be taken as damning with faint praise. Rather, it’s another example of preferred constituencies. Leftwing narrative: national guilt over a myriad of real and imagined historical shortcomings means it’s OK that most Americans suffer to benefit “oppressed” constituencies. Reference the “Our View” on page A4, dated Sept. 5: I am in complete agreement with your statement that something needs to be done to rein in the EPA. I have a suggestion on how that could be achieved and that is: The EPA can issue no order that requires funding to implement without a funding authorization from Congress. This approach would require the administration to put the required funding in the EPA budget and this would apply to all EPA orders requiring funding. Researchers in Argentina have recently discovered the bones of the largest dinosaur. The Dreadnaughtus, or “fearing nothing”, weighed about 65 tons. I believe my ex-wife evolved from this creature, through the 75 million years of evolution. She has some of the same characteristics: big boned, a vegetarian, her family hails from South America and her middle name is “fearing nothing.” Hmmm!
