The 10th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Walk and Parade commenced once again to honor the life and legacy of the Civil Rights icon with the theme, “Change is Coming.” More than 300 peace walkers and parade participants marched up Martin Luther King Avenue in Southeast on Monday, Jan. 18 to show solidarity including Mayor Muriel Bowser, radio host Donnie Simpson and music virtuoso Blake Miles Hopkins. “The Peace Walk is intergenerational bridging the gap between the older and younger generation. Wal-Mart Abandons Plans for Southeast, Angers Officials By Stacy M. Brown WI Senior Writer It had already been a challenging last few months in office for then out-going Mayor Vincent Gray. However, despite the circumstances that led to his failed re-election campaign, Gray was still closing deals and sealing agreements that he thought would make his beloved Washington, D.C. stronger, more vibrant and residents a little more secure. After the District had spent tens of millions of dollars and after many stops and stalls over more than a decade to develop the Skyland Shopping Center in Ward 7,
Gray struck a deal with Wal-Mart to anchor the long-dormant site. It was his parting gift to his city, most of all his hometown of Ward 7. Then, on Friday, Jan. 15, more than a year after the deal was formally consummated, Wal-Mart stunned and angered District officials when it announced it would build in the District and close dozens of stores nationwide. Additionally, company officials said it would pull out of its plan to build stores at the Capitol Gateway Marketplace in Northeast. In its announcement, Wal-Mart said poor performance from its
