Regardless of who wins the Democratic nomination for president, the nation already knows it will be a man who will go up against Donald Trump in November. Now, the nation knows that a woman will serve as vice president under the next president if the Democrats take back the White House. “There are a number of women qualified to be president tomorrow. I would pick a woman to be my vice president,” Former Vice President Joe Biden said during his one-on-one debate with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders on Sunday, March 15. “In all likelihood, I will,” Sanders countered. “For me, it’s not just nominating a woman. It is making sure that we have a progressive woman, and there are progressive women out there. So, my very strong tendency is to move in that direction.” Among those Biden could consider: former Georgia State Rep. Stacey Abrams, former Attorney General Sally Yates or California Sen. Kamala Harris. Sanders could consider: Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), former Ohio State Senator Nina Turner or New York Rep. Alexan-

House Passes Bipartisan Families First Coronavirus Response Act

By Stacy M. Brown WI Senior Writer @StacyBrownMedia As President Donald Trump stood in the Rose Garden of the White House to declare a national emergency, members of the Congressional Black Caucus held a conference call to discuss a bipartisan $8.3 billion emergency funding package to help Americans during the coronavirus pandemic. Following the conference call, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told reporters that the bill successfully passed. “The three most important parts of this bill are testing, testing, testing,” Pelosi stated. “This legislation facilitates free coronavirus testing for everyone, including the uninsured.” Pelosi continued: “We can only defeat this outbreak if we have an accurate determination of its scale and scope so that we can pursue the precise, science-based response that is necessary. To put families first, our legislation secures paid leave

with two weeks of paid sick leave and family and medical leave for those affected by the virus.” “And for those who lose their jobs, we are strengthening unemployment insurance – a critical step to protect workers’ economic security. Putting families first, our legislation protects our children and, particularly, the tens of millions of little children who rely on the free or reduced-price lunch they receive at school for their food security.” “As schools are being closed, these children will be deprived of their meals. Our bill takes aggressive action to strengthen food security initiatives, including student meals as well as SNAP, seniors’ meals and food banks,” Pelosi said. The measure includes $500 million for nutritious foods to low-income pregnant women or mothers with young children who lose their jobs or are laid off due to

The Washington Informer in Vol. 55, No. 17, February 6-12, published an article titled Youth Hair Model Reeling from Private School Expulsion, written by Sam P.K. Collins. The writer inaccurately reported that a former student enrolled at Kuumba Preparatory School of the Arts and Kuumba Learning Center in Southeast was expelled due to a change in the school’s hair policy and that the former student is in “an ongoing battle for the former student’s academic records.” The allegations against the school appeared in the title and in the body of the article. These allegations were inaccurate, and The Washington Informer regrets the mistake. We extend our sincerest apologies to the Kuumba Preparatory School of the Arts, the Kuumba Learning Center, Ms. Rasheed, the Director of Kuumba, and the Kuumba staff.
