As a committee, the Jindalee State School P & C is focussed on promoting parent participation and encouraging collaboration between parents, students, the teachers and administration staff within the school. It is about fostering a commitment to achieving the best educational outcomes for the children.

The teaching and administration staff, led by the principal can only achieve so much on their own and the P & C acts as an extension to their great work. They ensure projects such as the purchase of air conditioning, new classroom furniture and lights on the multi-purpose courts just to name a few. They also manage the tuckshop, uniform shop, School Aged Care Program and they drive fund raising through events such as the annual fete.

On fete day Look out for the

JSS stall sign The annual Jindalee State School (JSS) fete is one of the P&C’s most profitable sources of fundraising for our school. As much as we appreciate the input and revenue from our non-JSS run stalls (outside stall holders); it is the JSS run stalls that provide the best source of income for our school.

This stall is run by the Jindalee State School P&C. All proceeds go towards school improvements.

Now the P&C’s most profitable source of fundraising needs your help Yes, it is certainly true that the JSS run stalls provide the best source of income (fundraising dollars) on fete day but they do need help please. All we are asking is for you just to give a little of your time on fete day to help out a stall holder because right now some of these stalls may not be able to run. There are 600+ families in the school. The fete organisers - right now - are perplexed at how few people have put their hand up to help. Please don’t leave it for someone else to do. Please consider we are all busy people too. Please understand that many of the wonderful school facilities our children have are only possible with a fundraiser such as this. …And most of all please don’t make us try to explain to those little faces why there cannot be a fete next year.

Please Help! Contact a convenor NOW

Billabong Books

STALL: 3 Orange

As one of the JSS fete’s most popular stalls, books and CDs (AKA Billabong Books) will certainly be making an enthusiastic return in 2014. This is your opportunity to pick up some preloved reading and listening material at bargain basement prices. So swing by and make camp at Billabong Books. Sit down with a good book under the shade of a coolibah tree. This stall is run by the Jindalee State School P&C.

The Lego P layground This year for the first time we are having a Lego stall for the little ones wanting to take a break from the big rides.

CONVENED BY

The Lego Playground is a place to play and build. Please note however, the Lego isn’t for sale nor is it allowed to be taken home. All lego has been kindly lent to us and belongs to the Lego club JSS. A huge thanks to Maureen and the team at Goodstart Early Learning at Jindalee for kindly convening this stall.

The Tip Trash ‘n’ Treasure A trip to The Tip can only mean one of two things. It could be an adventurous road trip to the northern most point of Australia or it is a place to purge and unload your unwanted stuff.

SPONSORED BY

We all know that one man’s trash is certainly another’s treasure and The Tip at the JSS fete is a place for just that. There will be kitchen items, games, blankets, clothes, shoes, bikes, toys and maybe some furniture. So come and grab a bargain at The Tip. Perhaps you might find some camping gear for that other trip to The Tip.

JSS Stall Holders The Crafty Croc

This stall is run by the Jindalee State School P&C. All proceeds go towards school improvements. Thank you for your purchase.

Those Crocs sure are crafty creatures. They knit, they sew, they stitch, they crochet, they paint, they glue… …well the JSS ones do anyway. A team of Crafty Crocs have been busily crafting items such as fabric iPad lap stands, door snakes, dog and cat doorstops, fairy doors and the ever popular fabric topped hand towels. There are handmade cards, beautifully crafted gifts, lovely decorative nick-nacks and some unique items of jewellery. Drop into the Crafty Croc stall, located just outside the hall and snap up a bargain.

STALL: 2 Orange

The Sunf lower Garden Sunflower Plants is the sunniest of places to be on fete day. It is where the grass grows greener and colourful flowers are in abundance. Our stall is plants and much, much more! There will be bromeliads, herbs, succulents and perennials, just to name a few favourites. You will also find loads of decorations for the garden such as windmills, Aussie wind chimes, decorative herb and plant markers, pretty pots and planters. If you get into a bit of gardening then drop by and see us on the oval.

This stall is run by the Jindalee State School P&C.

Gum Tree Glow Sticks

See your children firefly off into the night sky with some gum tree glow stick fun! What illuminated wonders will the Glow Stick Stall have this year? Well that’s something the organisers are keeping under their glowing hats right now. It’s a surprise to inspire maximum excitement on the night. However, rest assured there will be the latest and greatest funky novelties available today.

STALL: 7 Orange

This is a must visit stall between the hours of 4pm-7pm. There will be lots of fabulous glowing novelties.

Jillaroo Jams & Chutneys Pump up the jam! …And you’ll need to be quick because this is one of our most popular fete stalls. Last year we sold out early, so this year we have been busily making more conserves. However, conservative we are not - we have increased our range of products this year and you will find delicious homemade goodies such as jams, chutneys and relishes, hommus, vegetable stock, pickled onions and lemon butter.

STALL: 5 Orange

Yum, yum, yum. Get yourself into a jam! You can find us in the hall.

Inspiration Required As we draw ever so close to the big day and I try to bust out the last pre-fete issue of The Dirt, I endeavour to fill the remaining space by adding in reminders of how we need help on stalls and then again for the clean up.

Inspired by the courageous Black Saturday volunteer firefighters in Victoria, Steph embarked on a journey to paint the portraits of 22 extraordinary volunteers. Her work itself is extraordinarily beautiful and she captures the very soul of these fabulous folk.

Perhaps some images from the book of a friend and beautifully talented artist could help to inspire? Stephanie Galloway Brown’s book Face of the Extraordinary: Volunteers celebrates the heartfelt dedication of the volunteer.

Dominator Voted No. 1 according to our Kids There is no doubt about it, the rides at the fete are a major draw-card for fete goers. Some call it the mini Ekka. We asked the students which ride is the coolest and the Dominator won without a doubt. Naturally, due to popular demand, the Dominator will be making a return to the fete this year. Will you be dominated?

It will all be happening at the fete. Join the Wild Rangers as they take some of Australia’s coolest wildlife icons for a walk around the fete. There will be an abundance of wildlife including reptiles, mammals, invertebrates and birds. They are all comfortable with being around large crowds, which will allow everyone to have a real hands-on experience. For the bargain price of $2, attendees at the fete will be able to get a great photo opportunity. It could be handling a snake or, more to the point, having the snakes handle you. Let Cougar the Coastal Carpet Python, or Twistie the gorgeous Murray Darling Python slither over your arms, shoulders and through your fingers. But don’t let Crunch the crocodile give you a kiss, his bite really is worse than his bark! If you don’t catch up with them as they wander the fete there will be a stand also for you to visit. At the stand you will be able to see all of the wildlife including: the Buddy

For just $2 you will be able to hold and be photographed with one of these ‘cool dudes’. Don’t forget to share The Dirt on your favourite social network to give our sponsors, advertisers and stall holders maximum coverage.

a COOL Rep! ‘Real Cool‘ Aussie Icon the Bearded Dragon, Stanley the Tawny Frogmouth and Kermit and Freddo the Green Tree Frog. There will also be other types of frogs and to put a sting in the tail of the event even some scorpions. Put a wildlife encounter on your fete to-do list and join rangers Amanda and Dionne, who have years of experience and a passion for wildlife. Wild Rangers love spreading the conservation message and educating us about these amazingly beautiful creatures too. So make sure you come with loaded questions.

A snake? Perhaps a croc? All proceeds from these close encounters go to JSS.

Thank you so much to everyone who has put their time and effort into the fete so far, it definitely doesn’t go unnoticed and we really appreciate it! We put the word out that we were in desperate need of helpers on fete day through the P&C Facebook page and JSS Fete Facebook page, news blast through the school, through class reps and a note was sent home. We covered all bases in the hope that we wouldn’t miss anyone and the school community responded and contacted their convenors. Thank you to all those who are volunteering their time to make our “I Love a Sunburnt Country’ Fete a big success! Some time slots still need filling so please contact your stall convenor to find out when they need a hand.

The SES Ordinary people doing extraordinary things

The State Emergency Service (SES) is a national organisation. Queensland SES consists of thousands of volunteers from a variety of backgrounds and professions who respond to emergencies across the state, 24/7. They are trained and equipped to help their communities across a range of functions, and their primary purpose is to assist the most vulnerable members of the community.

The SES is designed to empower people to help themselves and others in their community in times of emergency and disaster. The basic concept is one of self-help and mutual assistance within each community. (Image and text sourced from Emergency Services Queensland.)

The SES will be on hand to administer necessary first aid to patrons between 11 am and 3 pm.

Thanks Kara!

Bike Dear Stef and Committee, I just wanted to provide some feedback to the P&C Committee having attended the Bike Skills Course conducted by Mrs Gillian Duncan at the end of last term, which I understand was made possible by P&C funding. Just to recap, the Bike Skills Course was offered to all Year 4 students during sessions conducted on 16-20 June with a final session on 25 June. Gillian was assisted by Constable Ben Harm and I was fortunate enough to be able to attend all but two (of ten) sessions on behalf of the Active School Travel Committee. In my opinion the course was well structured with a range of content appropriate to the students. I thought that Gillian did a great job presenting the course, giving positive and encouraging feedback throughout. There were also quite a few beginner riders (some on brand new bicycles) who balanced for the first time and then grew in confidence, motivated by those around them, which was really pleasing to witness. Regardless of the entry level of each student, I’m very confident that those who participated will be much safer on their bicycles as a result of the course. I’m not 100% sure what the cost was, but I felt that this was a really good investment by the P&C and I do hope that this course will be supported in the future. Regards, Jamie Sharpe

Skills are Life Skills The P&C contributes to the life of the school in many ways and funds some terrific initiatives. The P&C’s current total for grants and fundraising is a massive $907,368 since November 2007. That is a huge effort only possible because of a team of volunteers with a passion for helping. Our fete profit of $50,000 in 2013 funded a new tractor and part of the classroom furniture project. We have also funded vital training courses for our students such as the Bike Skills Course. The Bike Skills course was run by Gillian Duncan, who holds Level 1 Coach accreditation from Cycling Australia. Gillian conducts bike skills and road safety sessions for beginners and has a special interest in teaching the basic foundation of cycling to young children to improve their confidence and skills. Just some of the course content includes: Queensland road rules, bike and helmet compliance checks and road safety.

Fete day 2015 Bleak isn’t it? Yet this is the reality if there is no fete next year. The fete organisers and convenors have worked tirelessly to make the fete happen and have done an absolutely awesome job and we would like to thank them for the time, effort, passion heart, soul and love that has gone into making a fantastic fete. You don’t have to be a P&C member to be a convenor and it really is a lot of fun. The people that you meet from being a part of an event like this creates lifelong friendships. Everyone is working towards a common goal of making this a fabulous day for the kids. Even if you can’t be a convenor, helping before or on the day is fantastic so next year when your stall convenor asks for help please respond early so that they don’t need to worry about not having enough people to man their stalls on the day. So you think that’s too much to ask? Sure thing, no worries! But then this is the oval next year on fete day. It takes a community to create a community event.
