Holiday Home

From Home

Where do people who live in a ‘holidaytown’ go on holiday? Somewhere fabulous!

D

And it’s not all ‘buckets and spades’. Yes, there are idyllic homes in sun-drenched getaways - like Zauri View in Goa, which sleeps up to 12 - but there is also Chalet Verjus in the French Alps for the winter sports fanatics, and other locations include Lanzarote, Spain, Morocco, The Caribbean, and Cyprus - and the list is growing. Low-cost airlines have made organising your own holiday a very easy and affordable option, and having access to the property owner means you know exactly what facilities are available when you arrive. Local knowledge is worth its weight in gold - you can plan your stay before you depart, know what to do, where to eat and what to look out for. For details on what’s available, or if you own a suitable property and are interested in letting it, call Deborah on 01227 277883 or 0784 102 1207 www.holidayhomefromhome.co.uk

ADVERTORIAL

eborah Mylcrist has been letting holiday homes through Hillcross Estates in Whitstable for several years and has built a thriving business with more than 50 properties on her books. But where do Whitstable locals go to get away from it all? The answer to this question was the seed of Deborah’s new business, holiday homes that were bought to be used by their owners. “It’s like a boutique holiday club, all the property owners are known to me personally,” Deborah explains, “and I have been to many of the properties personally. If the property is described as five minutes from the beach than it IS five minutes from the beach. The thing to remember is that these properties are used by the owners for their own holidays; they were bought because their owners fell in love with them, and wanted to return time and again to relax and unwind. The photos are honest pictures and the properties are as described.”

WELCOME TO THE AUGUST ISSUE OF THE WHITSTABLE IMP!

I

love Whitstable in all weathers but I think we’d all agree that it really comes into its own in the summer. The 2010 Oyster Festival has been and gone, but the long summer holidays stretch ahead of us and there’s still the Regatta and the Carnival to look forward to, among other things. We’ve had feedback that you’d like to see new things, so for your reading enjoyment this month we’ve included puzzles and a short

story by a local writer - to help you relax on some of those lazy summer afternoons. Have a wonderful summer and, as ever, do write in with your points of view, questions or feedback - we love hearing from you. Christina & The IMP Team The Whitstable IMP, PO Box 290, Whitstable CT5 9AH

WHITSTABLE CARNIVAL

T

he Oyster Festival and the Regatta are over for another year, but fear not! There are more summer treats in store for Whitstable, one of which is the Carnival! The 2010 Carnival will be held on Saturday August 7, and at 113 years old, it is steeped in the history of Whitstable families and businesses that have taken part in this wonderful old event, still around for us to enjoy today. And despite its age our 2010 Carnival has firmly moved into the 21st century, with a new, fresh and vibrant look, including a logo designed by students at Christ Church University, under the direction of lecturer Paul Cook, and an excellent website by James Montgomery from Realising Designs. Miss Whitstable and her Court still represent the tradition of young ladies who are chosen to act as ambassadors for our town, and are expected to present themselves as responsible young citizens who are courteous and confident. They will be required to attend 12 different Carnivals around the East Kent Coast, right through to November, and during this time they will make speeches, open events, and meet the towns’ dignitaries. But, of course, our own Carnival Parade presents the best opportunity for the girls to enjoy their responsibilities.

The parade is open for anyone to enter, from friends, families and neighbours, through to businesses and groups or clubs, who can use this great opportunity to advertise to thousands of local people. This year the traditional Carnival competition to ‘Spot The Odd Object’ in shop windows has been sponsored by over 50 businesses. Prizes of £50 £20 and £10 make this an exciting family event, so look out for the posters designed by Whitstable artist Penny Crowther telling you which shop windows to look in. And another £50 is there to be won if you have one of our newly designed Carnival Programmes by Nicoleta Craciun, so be sure to return the slip to see if you have the lucky one! There are so many ways to make Whitstable Carnival your event, you can sign up as a Facebook Fan, send in your photos of past parades to add to our archives, or get involved in the running of this piece of Whitstable’s history, or you can simply turn up and watch the parade.

COMMUNITY

Our Carnival brings people of this lovely old town together, not for any particular reason other than to have some fun and be a bit silly for a while. So have a look on our website www. whitstablecarnival.co.uk. It’s free to enter so join in the fun and be part of it! We look forward to seeing you there!

he email read something like, “We are in Whitstable tomorrow. At the library from 14h30. Come and play...” I dropped the phone dreamily and continued on on sleep-time journey. I woke early, as one does with three small angel babies, to find that receiving the email was not a dream. A long lost friend had been found and it was he who had contacted me to let me know that he had developed into a different creature and that I should visit with him and some like-minded friends who had been invited to perform as part of the Biennale 2010. I could hardly wait and at two o’ clock I put Samuel on my shoulders and we walked to our

It was pretty late on Friday night and I heard the familiar sound of ‘email received’ from my beloved iPhone. I am one of those people who cannot ignore emails or texts very easily so i reached for my phone. To be honest, I was not sure if I was dreaming or not...

ARTS & EXHIBITIONS library where we were greeted by an awesome collective of mind-blowing souls who recreated Whitstable, and indeed the Kent area in the most phenomenal way... They are THE READERS. They describe their work as “a literary musical fusion of transcendental post-avant-punk and neoclassicedelica, using a range of instruments, from vintage electronica and handmade Theremins, to the musical saw and harmonized glasses, as well as both classical and untrainable singers.” Following Alain Renais’ vision that “libraries are the repositories for all the memories of the world,” The Readers explored the memories of the people of Kent through its great literary heritage. Books transformed included Dickens’ Bleak House, Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, Maugham’s Of Human Bondage, Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and T S Eliot’s The Waste Land. I am not sure what Samuel made of their work, but I absolutely loved it. I came away feeling as though I had been fed. More than that, I came away realising not only that I had been fed, but that I had been very, very hungry. I feel so proud of my friend Ramon, who has indeed metamorphasised into an incredibly vibrant creature capable of changing the world in a wonderful and interesting way. I

WHY DO WE LIKE TO BE SCARED?

he smell of candyfloss, the noise and the colour - but most of all the thrills: theme parks must surely be one of man’s greatest inventions? Ok, not everyone will agree with that, but why do some of us crave the thrills and spills of Alton Towers’ Nemesis or Blackpool’s Big One while others content themselves with the safety of the merry-go-round? According to Frank Farley, a psychologist at Temple University in Pennsylvania USA, it comes down to something he calls a ‘Type T’ personality. Type T’s are thrill-seekers who thrive on the uncertainty and intensity of activities that most people would find hair-raising. “Sky divers will tell you it’s the thrill, the rush, and a little element of fear that motivates them to push themselves to the extreme,” he says. It seems that some people enjoy the physical sensations associated with fear: the adrenaline rush; the pounding heart and the sweaty palms. In his studies of roller coaster-lovers Farley says, “...there’s almost nothing else, including sex, that can match it in terms of the incredible sensory experience that the body is put through.” Recent research has pinpointed certain genes which may be responsible for type T personalities. Robert Moyzis, a biochemist at the University of

California, has isolated a gene called DRD4 which is more common in such people. New technologies have allowed engineers to design coasters that change speeds quickly, shoot up hundreds of feet into the air, and make all sorts of twists, subjecting the body to intense forces. Farley suggests that extreme fairground rides tend to appeal to those of us who lead stressful, structured or controlled lives. “Roller coasters are a way of breaking out of the humdrum and expectations of everyday life,” he says. Theme parks also allow us to act like children again; to behave a little wildly. “Where else in the world can you scream at the top of your lungs and throw your arms in the air?” asks Farley? “If you did that in most other places, they’d probably put you through a psychological evaluation.” Adventure parks are also a great way of bringing families or friends together. Riders share the thrill and adventure of having survived what feels like an extreme experience, even though the rides there are actually very safe. If you’re looking for a great day out this summer where you can get in touch with your inner risktaker and feel closer to family at the same time, head for the nearest theme park. It’ll be a scream!

MUSIC

T

16

here is nothing watered-down about this band. They are not another ‘fencepop’ band who have nothing to say and make music just so that it complies with what can and can’t be played on the radio. They are real, sincere and a definitely not whimsical. A true contribution to the wonderful world of music, SIZEN have been gracing the audial world since around 2002. Their current line-up was finalised 2008, and they have been moving steadfastly since then like a gripping tsunami of sound over the namby-pamby world of fence-music forcing people to stop, take notice and actively listen to music. This is not the kind of band that one can hear while peeling the potatoes... To put it bluntly, “... this is no nostalgic trip - SIZEN have simply put song writing at the very centre of their existence, and... aim to bring rock music kicking and screaming into the new millennium.” In their words: “SIZEN is a war cry of four dedicated and focussed musicians who aspire to play the BIG STAGE in the world of musical chaos. Committed to our music we deliver a solid, raw sound with interesting licks and riffs and a message that we are here to play music we enjoy. Whilst maintaining the important balance of enjoying life we see this as essential in creating music that moves us as well as our audience. As individuals, we see many issues in life differently but even with such differences of opinion our music

theimp 16 Music.indd 1

unifies us whilst also, we hope, creating a bridge of understanding between us and our audiences. What are our aims for the future? That’s an easy question to answer. Write, record and hopefully perform tonnes more original music worldwide, anywhere and everywhere where our sound and direction will be enjoyed” SIZEN are: Dan Smith (Bassist) who not only glues the band together but also runs DS Guitars, a company that creates guitars and basses in beautiful detail from conception to final instrument; Dudley Ross (Guitarist) who plays extraordinary sounds; Max Andrews (Vocalist) who keeps the listeners on their audial feed and Loz Smith (Drums) who scaffolds the music in the most interesting way. Their album ‘What do you see?’, released in 2009, was produced by Joe Gibb at Mighty Atom Studios. It is a symphony of nine pieces of polished and insightful music guaranteed to take the listener out of complacency. Do check them out whenever you can but be prepared to be forced to listen to music in a way which few have the opportunity to do. This band is about getting us off the fence and into the groove! The Twilight Saga: Eclipse Certificate: 12A

ENTERTAINMENT

I

18

love the ‘Twilight’ franchise. I love it a lot. Stephanie Mayer’s ‘Eclipse’ was one of my favourite books from the series so I was eager and excited for the screen adaptation and entered the cinema for a preview screening of the movie with a big smile slapped across my face - praying it would stay that way throughout. ‘Eclipse’ starts where ‘New Moon’ left off; Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) are safely back together in Forks, after their escapades in Italy with the Volturi. However, in Seattle, vicious mass-murders are taking place and the Cullen family are soon aware that this isn’t just random violence. To make matters worse, Bella is still torn between her Vampire soul mate Edward and her Werewolf friend Jacob (Taylor Lautner) whose feelings for her are rather apparent. When the Cullens discover the violence in Seattle is linked to Bella, the Vampires must stand and fight for her safety, but they are going to need a little help from some unlikely sources. British filmmaker David Slade has now picked up the franchise, a director whose filmography is hardly ‘Hollywood’. He made such films as ‘Hard Candy’ (2005); a brilliant but warped paedophile drama and ’30 Days of Night’ (2007) which is a Vampire movie, but it’s brutally violent and explicit, unlike ‘Eclipse’. But despite coming from a rougher cinematic background, Slade has managed to capture all the essence and character of the story, as well as making it his own. So, did I still have a smile when I left the film? Absolutely. In fact, it was bigger than when I entered. ‘Eclipse’ feels more grown-up; sure the romance is still slushy and the dialogue is laced with puns and one-liners but that’s part of its charm. Fans will be pleased to know that the movie sticks to the novel, just like the previous two features have done. As I said with ‘New Moon’, Stewart is the star of these films; she is the actress that holds the movies together. Her presence on-screen is absorbing and she’ll definitely have a decent future ahead of her. Another thing that pleasantly surprised me was Lautner. He’s still ‘ab-fab’ and still lacking clothing but his acting has come on in heaps and bounds. He feels a bit more rounded now and serves a screen purpose that’s not just purely for eye-candy. Another pleasing thing was the action; Slade’s past films have had a major impact on the violence in this film. Some of the fight sequences could have easily made this film a higher certificate if they were bloodier. I think this is great for the franchise as it will open more commercial doors and attract a wider male audience. The picture is filled with beautiful cinematography that pulls the audience into the screen, has a decent pace that doesn’t leave any spots of boredom and it sports a brilliant soundtrack with some great names from the Indie and Alternative world. I haven’t got anything really bad to say about this one; I know I’m biased because I’ve been a fan for ages but as an entire film it was great: entertaining, involving and exciting, everything you’d want from a big Hollywood production. Go see ‘Eclipse’, even if you’re a guy, and whether you’re a ‘Twilight’ fan or not - there’s plenty to enjoy for everyone.

FILM REVIEW

VERDICT: 5 out of 5 – a solid and entertaining film that will please many. Whether you watch it for the romance, the action or for Lautner’s abs, you will still have a brilliant time. Chris Haydon

The Taste of Sorrow – Jude Morgan

20

There is nothing particularly new in Jude Morgan’s novel about the Bronte sisters. As the writer himself points out, their life stories are already very well known. So what makes it such a compelling read? The Taste of Sorrow covers the life of the three famous sisters, from the death of their mother, through their experiences of school, working life, friendship and tentative romance. Charlotte is at the centre of the story, but Morgan wisely chooses not to have her as narrator. Instead he gives voice to deep, enigmatic Emily and careful, contemplative Anne, as well as the lesser known supporting characters – particularly Patrick Bronte, the girls’ father, who outlived them all. The most frequently told tales from Bronte history are here: the experiences at Cowan Bridge which shaped the story of Jane Eyre; the arrival of the toy soldiers and the creation of their intricate fantasy worlds; and the eventual visit to London to prove their separate identities. However, it is the smaller details which run alongside these that turn this into a powerful work of fiction. Even though the reader is aware of how it all ends, it is a page turner to the finish. Whatever your acquaintance with the Bronte sisters, this is an excellent read.

The Mousehole Cat – Antonia Barber and Nicola Bayley It’s hard to know where to begin with this beautiful, lyrical, multi-layered children’s book. As you pick it up and leaf through, the first thing that strikes you is the detail of Bayley’s illustrations. Each page is lovingly decorated with vivid pictures which draw you into the story. Even those pages taken up with text boast intricate themed borders. Then, once you begin to read, the poetic power of Barber’s language takes you further into the world of myth and fairytale. The story is simple enough – Tom, the fisherman, lives with his cat Mowzer in the village of Mousehole. Their life is simple and happy, until the Great Storm Cat prevents the men from fishing and the community faces starvation. Tom sets out one December evening to brave the storm and Mowzer travels with him, purring and singing to tame the winds and rain. Like the best tales for children, there is no oversimplification here – language and pictures alike are deep and rich, which is what lends the story its power. Whether reading aloud or browsing quietly, there is something here to delight any reader of any age, and to move the hardest of hearts. If you know a child who has not yet discovered this book, then buy it for them now – but don’t forget to read it yourself before you pass it on.

The Collector By Nelson P. Jefferson It was a labyrinth of steel. The metal containers were stacked up six or seven high; in place even higher. It made a natural maze, with hundreds of narrow, black crevices for my prey to lose himself in. Now and again there was a break in the serried ranks, allowing a brief glimpse of the deserted wharf beyond. I mused briefly on the time when great ships from around the world would have lined the quays, the dormant cranes reaching over to them like feeding dinosaurs, grabbing a colourful block to stack up on land. I wondered at the things they would have brought from lands afar; books, leaflets, instruction manuals – and all that cardboard packaging! But those debauched times were past, the ships long gone, the mighty cranes all but extinct, the only living link to those times the smuggler I was pursuing. Skirting around a great puddle of rusty water, I saw the mark scratched into a dented green container – not far now.

SHORT STORY

My thoughts drifted back to the first time I had come here, exactly a year to the day before, and my first meeting with the paper smuggler. Then, I had been relying on the sleek holo-pad hanging around my neck for orientation. The schematics beamed directly from headquarters showed my position at the eastern end of the docks, just as Mikey had said.

22

Mikey was a greetings card trafficker, and about as dishonourable as you might expect a low-life like that to be. I found it hard to imagine; someone chopping down a valuable tree for the sake of someone’s birthday! Why not just send them a holo-greeting, like a sane person? But that’s how I thought then. Mikey had cracked easily enough.

“You think you’ve seen a stack ‘ere?” he blubbed, his nose still bleeding from the only softening-up session he’d needed, “You should see down the docks!” I had to call my heavies off then, or I might have missed the rest. “What’s down the docks then, Mikey?” I asked in my ‘reasonable-cop’ voice. “Oh, you wouldn’t believe it! Tons o’ the stuff! Old stock mostly – they say he don’t traffic, and he doesn’t push, either – all for personal use, like.” “A collector?” I had to try real hard to keep the excitement out of my voice. I’d heard of collectors, of course. Very hard to track down, since there were few leads to them, very little evidence to pin on them (unless you stumbled across their collection while they were actually there), and they could be inactive for years. They were the strongest link in any chain. Naturally, I took Mikey’s claims with a dose of salt that would have had the Ministry of Welfare breathing down my neck. The thought of really making my mark in the department, of showing those time-serving pen-pushers how the job should really be done, was almost too good to be true. I couldn’t afford to show myself up, so I went there alone. There it was, just as Mikey had described it; a yellow container with vertical blue bands – and the door was open! I looked around briefly for any signs of activity and edged close, unholstering my pistol. I was very conscious of the fact that Mikey may have been trying to lead

N • LOCAL FICTION • LOCAL FICTION I took my time crossing the open space before the container door, staring deeply into every shadow, listening for any scuffle or click, alert for any sign of treachery. There was nothing suspicious that I could make out at all, but that open door had unnerved me and, by the time I reached it, I was surprised at the sheen of sweat on my face and I wiped my hands on my trousers before taking a firmer grip on my gun and stepping inside the steel box. The first thing I saw was the collector himself, hunched over a desk, reading. I waited, and noticed the books – hundreds, probably thousands of them, lined in neat rows, rank upon rank. They filled the container from floor to ceiling, narrow corridors formed in the space between them. I began to perspire again; the museums would have a field day with this little lot! It must be worth millions of credits. My promotion was in the bag. Now if only I could catch the perp writing! Caught in the act of voluntarily wasting paper was almost up there with murder and chopping trees down. As if he read my thoughts, the collector reached under the table, presumably into a drawer (I released the safety catch of my gun), produced a pen and proceeded to write. The moment had come.

very well have represented a whole new chain of paper smugglers, illicit printers, underground book-binders, black market literary reviewers and, of course, gangster lumberjacks, feeding an illicit desire for paper goods, to either read or, (if they were really perverse) to write on. Seemed my perp was of the latter persuasion. He was medium build, unremarkable-looking and quite well presented; none of your rat-faced rag-bags that usually infest the docks after dark. In fact, I thought the neat spectacles made him look like a professor. The collector said nothing and merely looked at me calmly as I approached him. When I think back, I’m sure that was the most disturbing aspect of the whole thing – the feeling that he had been waiting for me. He even smiled slightly as I emptied his pockets (a pen, a small spiral-bound notebook and a couple of paper clips – what a giveaway!), so I decided to put him back in his place. “You’re gonna go down for a long time for all this, you know.” “Really?” he replied quietly. Now if there’s one thing guaranteed to wind me up, it’s the calm, quiet ones. You might say it undermines my authority. I say that I prefer them to understand the reality of their crimes and break down – it’s more satisfying that way.

“I’d stop there if I were you.” I said, stepping into the main thoroughfare of the city of paper.

“Really,” I retorted, forcing my voice to match his for icy calm.

The guy didn’t even jump. He simply stopped, just as I’d asked, and put down the pen.

“And what is the crime, exactly?” the perp enquired, leaning back in his chair and looking at me as if he’s some teacher and I’m some pupil who needs a little help with a hard sum.

“Put your hands in the air and turn around, nice and slow.” The man turned. I felt a slight pang of disappointment at not recognising him from the ‘Most Wanted’ holo-boards in the office, but realised with pleasure that this therefore meant new lines of enquiry. This guy may

“I’m glad you find it all so amusing,” I said, letting my annoyance show a little. I still remember his voice; light and conversational, although his expression was earnest.

Take great photos of your child’s party

PARTY PICS

Y

24

ou plan it; your child and their friends look forward to it, so it would be nice to have some great photos to remember it. Children’s parties are full of colour, life and movement, which makes them great photo opportunities, but also makes them a challenge. Chaos and clutter reign, and the subjects never sit still. This means that party photos are often disappointing. But with our helpful guide you can have party pics to be proud of. Delegate – One person cannot organise a party; keep children in check; serve food; find the matches for the candles and take all the photos... so delegate. If you want to take the photos get someone else to organise the event. If you’re happier organising, then find a photography-mad friend to take snaps. Get the Lowdown – The best children’s photos tend to happen when the photographer is down at their level. That’s where the magic happens. There’s a saying, ‘show: don’t tell.’ Photos taken by adults looking down from their level ‘tell’: photos taken at a child’s level ‘show’. Vary your distance – Though most of your photos should be at child level, do vary your distance. Try crouching at the edge of the room and zoom in on the action. This allows for candid shots. Mix these with a few close-ups where they’re hamming it up for the camera. If you want to shoot from above, stand on a chair to get some height. Children love to see adults doing weird things and will naturally gaze up at you! Try gathering them all close together to shout HAPPY BIRTHDAY up at the camera. Key Moments – Make sure you know when and where the cake will be cut. Use the sport

mode or burst setting on your camera as you’ll probably only get one chance to catch it. Use single shot and you might miss it! It’s in the Detail – Take a few shots of the cake before it’s cut. Try getting in really close so the frame is filled. Take photos of the room and the food before the guests arrive, and the birthday boy or girl while they’re calm and clean. Include photos of any decorations like balloons, streamers or piles of gifts. These photos look great in an album interspersed between action and people shots. To flash...or not? – If the party is outside stick with natural daylight. Most parties are held indoors, though. Some cameras have an indoor setting but sometimes you will need a flash. Flash can washout the subject giving a harsh, unnatural effect. It’s better to reduce the flash intensity if you can. If you can’t do this try taping a little micropore or 1ply of tissue over your flash to diffuse it. Experiment beforehand for the most pleasing results. Enjoy it! – Photographing children is fun. Enjoy yourself and they will too, and you should get some polished party pics. The Umbrella Centre runs five-week digital camera courses for beginners and improvers, where you can learn to use your digital camera to the full, edit images on a computer, use imaging software and create artisic effects. Courses cost £5 to register and are £12.50 for 5 weeks. Advanced classes are also available. Call the Centre for details: 01227 274880.

Pack It In!

How to tackle your holiday packing Excitement, anticipation and stress: it must be the holiday season! This year, forget last-minute panic-packing and plan ahead. Set aside holiday bits and bobs in the weeks leading up to your departure date. A large box is a great ally because you can fling in anything you want to take with you that won’t be required beforehand. The key word to tension-free packing is ‘simplify’. Simplifying gives you control which in turn alleviates stress. It sounds obvious, but spend time to create a checklist and tick off the items as you pack them. Don’t forget special items such as contact lens solutions and your child’s favourite teddy! Airlines sometimes change baggage allowances so check in advance and then check again just before you leave. We all have a tendency to pack as though we’re emigrating to our destination permanently, but minimalist packing is far less stressful. We never need as much as we think. Don’t stuff suitcases so full they won’t close, leave a bit of space for souvenirs.

Remember the mantra - with clothes if in doubt leave it out. Ensure every item of clothing you pack coordinates with at least two others. Then take half of everything out. Be ruthless. Let’s face it; children (and most men) will happily live in the same shorts / t-shirt /swimming costume for the whole holiday and no-one really needs six pairs of shoes…oh no they don’t! One really useful tip gleaned from a seasoned traveller is to mix the items between the suitcases. Make sure there are some clothes for everyone in each case, so that if one case goes missing en route you’ll all have a change of clothing at the other end. Finally, pack disposable items which can be shed along the way, such as books, magazines, little toys and a supply of bribes for fractious children. Bon Voyage.

The most important items are: passports, tickets, travel insurance, driving licence (if hiring a car), money and credit or debit cards. As long as you have these essentials your holiday will happen, so pack them separately and securely. Pack sun block, after sun, mosquito repellent and bite cream in plastic bags to prevent spillage.

TRAVEL

Wash bags containing miniature toiletries save on space. Don’t forget hairbrushes and toothbrushes. A basic first aid kit is useful. If you need medications take enough for the whole stay, and a doctor’s prescription in case you need more. Check the medicines are not illegal in the country you’re visiting! This particularly applies to destinations in the Middle East. Don’t forget battery chargers and a travel plug adaptor for any electronic equipment like cameras, mobile phones, shavers and toys.
