Holiday Home
From Home
Where do people who live in a ‘holidaytown’ go on holiday? Somewhere fabulous!
D
And it’s not all ‘buckets and spades’. Yes, there are idyllic homes in sun-drenched getaways - like Zauri View in Goa, which sleeps up to 12 - but there is also Chalet Verjus in the French Alps for the winter sports fanatics, and other locations include Lanzarote, Spain, Morocco, The Caribbean, and Cyprus - and the list is growing. Low-cost airlines have made organising your own holiday a very easy and affordable option, and having access to the property owner means you know exactly what facilities are available when you arrive. Local knowledge is worth its weight in gold - you can plan your stay before you depart, know what to do, where to eat and what to look out for. For details on what’s available, or if you own a suitable property and are interested in letting it, call Deborah on 01227 277883 or 0784 102 1207 www.holidayhomefromhome.co.uk
ADVERTORIAL
eborah Mylcrist has been letting holiday homes through Hillcross Estates in Whitstable for several years and has built a thriving business with more than 50 properties on her books. But where do Whitstable locals go to get away from it all? The answer to this question was the seed of Deborah’s new business, holiday homes that were bought to be used by their owners. “It’s like a boutique holiday club, all the property owners are known to me personally,” Deborah explains, “and I have been to many of the properties personally. If the property is described as five minutes from the beach than it IS five minutes from the beach. The thing to remember is that these properties are used by the owners for their own holidays; they were bought because their owners fell in love with them, and wanted to return time and again to relax and unwind. The photos are honest pictures and the properties are as described.”

WELCOME TO THE OCTOBER ISSUE OF THE WHITSTABLE IMP!
I
f, like me, you love the change in the seasons that Autumn brings, you will appreciate the distinct nip in the air and whiff of Autumn. October brings brown leaves, Trick-or-Treating, and darker evenings. And the October IMP brings a couple of new features: ‘Business of the Month’ and ‘Who’s Who’, where we take a look at some of Whitstable’s acclaimed independent and diverse businesses and personalities. If you’d like to be included or know someone we should write about, email us at editorial@the-imp.co.uk or write to our postal address below. We’ve also started a new theme for our covers - from now on we’ll be using them to promote
local artists or photographers. The theme, scene or piece needs to be immediately recognisable as Whitstable, and I’m sure you’ll agree that this month’s cover, by Jon Bird, is a beautiful example. To be considered, email editorial@the-imp.co.uk with the subject: IMP COVER. Have a great October and we’ll be back in time for Firework’s Night! ’Raspberry Ripple’ by Jonathan Lindsey Bird – Born in the north-east, Jon moved south to study at Canterbury College of Art in the 70s, settling in Whitstable and working as a sound recordist in the film industry for the next thirty years. For over ten years, daughter Jenni has been living in Tuscany, and frequent visits to the Italian countryside and a lull in television work provided part of the stimulus for Jon’s return to painting. As well as Tuscan views, favourite subjects are trees, boats, and of course, the fabulous Whitstable sunsets. Jon and Daphne live in a 200 year-old former alehouse in the centre of Whitstable. BUSINESS OF THE MONTH:
WHITSTABLE LAVENDER With Whitstable recently voted number one shopping town for its variety of shops and independent stores, we can be justly proud of our High Street. Whitstable Lavender is just one of these independent traders for which Whitstable is famous, and this October sees the shop’s second birthday.
hut, which they still open at weekends, some of the goods were spoiled by the driving rain we had in early September. The shop in The High Street was a bit of an accident. Colin heard from the previous owner that it would be available and, very cautiously, mentioned it to Barbara, not knowing what to expect. “You won’t be happy until you’ve tried,” was her response - and the shop is now two years old. Colin and Barbara both admit that the first 12 months were very quiet, and it was a difficult thing to grit their teeth and hold their nerve, given the circumstances and with shops seeming to close all around them. Happily, they’ve turned the corner and are a busy, well-known and respected part of the bustling High Street, attracting regular local customers as well as tourist trade. In fact, things became so busy that Colin and Barbara couldn’t keep up with demand on their own. So they looked to the community for help. The friends they made at the craft fairs are now their suppliers for services such as embroidery, hand-made soft furnishings, homemade jams, chutneys and marmalades - all made with lavender, and produced locally, by locals, using local ingredients. They even use local accountants Bubb Sherwin for all their accounts and wages. It’s an important part of their ethos.
BUSINESS OF THE MONTH
O
wned and managed by husband and wife team Colin and Barbara Dudley, Whitstable Lavender, the concept, started years ago when Colin’s aromatherapist ran out of Lavender oil and couldn’t source any quickly enough for their appointment. Barbara, a retired Caterer, pointed out that they had a garden full of it, and Colin’s synapses started firing... They haven’t looked back since. Colin, a retired engineering manager for a food company, jokes: “I was ‘in between’ jobs - I’d just finished the extension on the house and, as a dare, I hid in the shed, stripped all the lavender from the garden... and the neighbours’ gardens... and eventually produced lavender oil and water.” The couple gave the product of their labours away for a couple of years. They used to keep it in Colin’s Dad’s empty whisky bottles and Barbara would use the water around the house and for the ironing. As time went on, Colin learned more and more about the different species of lavender and started to keep the waters from the species separate, as he found they have different properties and effects. “Then someone said we should do craft fairs,” Colin explains. So, nine years ago, they started looking into it. “We realised we needed to have a range of products for a stall. So I sourced certified soap and candle wax bases which we then added colour and the lavender oil to.” From their first craft fair, things have blossomed. It hasn’t always been easy, though. They had a gazebo at the Harbour before the council allowed the beach huts which make up Harbour Village we know today, and were at the mercy of all the elements. Even at the beach

It’s almost as if Colin and Barbara see themselves as the caretakers of the shop, which is there for the community. They are open to ideas from anyone. They love promoting Whitstable. They still see lavender as a hobby, still love every minute of it, stay up late sewing, filling shampoo bottles and seedbags - and employ people to help in the shop only so that they can take the occasional day off. But they can’t really stay away... even today, a rare ‘holiday’ from the shop, Colin and Barbara have welcomed me into their home for this interview, a couple of last minute orders have come through over the website and, although they’re visiting friends later, they will drop in at a haberdashery and a craft shop to look at material, embroidery accessories and browse for new ideas. They stock a plethora of items, from essential oils, waters, fragrancers and bath products, to hand-sewn wheat bags, cushions, bunting and seed bags; embroidered towels, flannels, shoppers and aprons. They also manage to squeeze in gifts, local paintings, photographs and cards, as well as finding time to make up customer Gift Trug and wedding favours. But they don’t stop there. Colin explains: “We like to give people the opportunity to make things for the shop. If anyone has an idea to produce something for the shop, we like to give them the chance to make and sell it. And customers are always coming in to ask for things - from smaller bags (the mini-shopper)
to fragrant shoe-inserts; moth repellent sprays (Colin did some research and blended lavender with cedar wood and citronella oils) to branded carrier bag holders. If we don’t stock it, we try to make it for them.” You get the feeling they could produce anything lavender-oriented if they had the space. And Colin worries that the size of the shop may be intimidating to people considering going in. But, trust me, they are lovely people, they love what they do, and are happy to chat, or leave you alone to browse. And what they don’t know about lavender probably isn’t worth knowing... Who’s Who? Who’s Who? CINDY MANINWARING
PERSONALITY
One or two Saturdays a month on your travels up or down Whitstable High Street, you may recall seeing an elegant lady seated at a trestle table at the top of the stairs up to St Mary’s Hall - perhaps more commonly-known as The Umbrella Centre. Cindy Mainwaring is extremely proud of Whitstable’s new accolade for independence and individuality in the High Street, and agrees: “That is exactly what Whitstable offers.”
08
And it’s exactly what Cindy’s Seaside Brocante seems to offer, too. Affectionately termed ‘Mainwaring’s Magical Mix’, Cindy’s fairs are not your normal arts and crafts fairs, but include antiques, bric-a-brac, vintage clothes and fabrics, jewellery, and home-sewn soft furnishings made from vintage fabrics, among other things. Cindy lived in Chelsea and had a famous antiques fair there in the Town Hall on the King’s Road for 30 years. “I wanted to work but had young children, and lots of friends in the same position who wanted an outlet for their hobbies,” Cindy explains - and her blend of vintage and antique exactly tapped into the mood at the time. Having spent holidays here in Whitstable with her children for the past 20 years, Cindy admits: “Whitstable is my Chelseaby-the-sea, and is how Seaside Brocante found its name. It’s another branch of the fair, but at the seaside.” She explains: “There’s the same eclectic mix of people here in Whitstable as you’d find floating up and down the King’s Road - artists and students and families, as well as the odd celebrity and those in the market for more expensive antiques.” Whitstable already felt like a home-from home, and when she moved here permanently six years ago, she immediately started planning a fair here - her famous ‘Seaside Brocante’. But Cindy is very careful to use the phrase ‘bric-a-brac’ when she talks of her fairs: “Lots of people could be put off or intimidated by the word ‘antique’,” she explains. “There’s a perception that ‘antiques’ are extremely expensive and only for serious collectors, whereas ‘bric-a-brac’ is
theimp 08 personality.indd 1
completely unthreatening and gives a much better idea of the mix of things you’ll find at Seaside Brocante.” And Cindy obviously finds time away from the trestle table to shop at her fairs - her lovely terraced cottage has cream-painted floorboards, rugs, sofas with vintage throws, antique mirrors, picture frames and brown furniture. “Antiques are the ultimate form of recycling,” Cindy maintains, “what could be better?” At first Cindy found the footfall to this part of town less than she’d anticipated - and people didn’t really know about St Mary’s Hall. “I found myself answering lots of questions about the hall, but I saw the potential, and I do feel a sense of satisfaction that I’ve contributed both financially to the Hall and to the local economy by bringing traders and customers to Whitstable who may otherwise not have ventured here. It has taken a good five years to get to this stage.” Cindy looks after her traders, too. Having lived through two recessions, she is only too aware that shops can close down but her fairs have allowed some of her traders to keep going even in hard times. “I listen to people and take advice from them - I’m only the organiser, it is really their fair.”
And in terms of attracting visitors; as well as advertising and email and leaflet campaigns, Cindy maintains: “It’s very important that I’m there, visibly on the forecourt, in rain, wind or snow.” And so she is. If you’re passing or thinking of taking a stall, don’t hesitate to stop for a chat, she’s a lovely lady, and nothing pleases her more than when people smile and wave as she raises her banner over the Umbrella Centre, or stop by on their way out with bulging bags and smiles on their faces. Seaside Brocante is at St Mary’s Hall (The Umbrella Centre) this month on October 2 and 16. Cindy is calling them her ‘Early Christmas Shopper’ fairs, so why not pop in and browse? You might find the perfect party dress, or even make a start on your Christmas gifts. Even if you just want to browse, it’s only £1 entry and the Umbrella Centre lays on a selection of cakes and tea in the lovely garden at the back, weather permitting. Check out What’s on? for future dates, or call Cindy on 01227 773037. Christina Birkett

ARTS & EXHIBITIONS

he Horsebridge Centre received such a positive response from their A2 exhibition earlier this year that they decided to do it again...but on a much larger scale! The gallery gained “an amazingly positive response from the community and local press,” after February’s exhibition says Steven Clinton, The Horsebridge Events Co-ordinator. “The feedback we got was to have a bigger show. So we have gone for it, and put by both galleries for two weeks this October with the potential for 200 pieces of work!” For those unaware of what the A2 exhibition involves, it is a show which aims to exhibit the young artistic talent in Whitstable. In the February exhibition it was restricted to 11-16 year olds, but for the October exhibition, the gallery will take submissions from all 16 year olds and under. Work submitted can be of any nature or medium, but must be A2 in size. Artists can choose to sell their work but The Horsebridge takes no commission; the money goes straight back to the artist. The exhibition will run from October 8-17 and begins with an opening night where all the artists taking part and the local press are invited! The Horsebridge has decided to make A2 Open more of a competition this time, with some great prizes, including art materials generously provided and sponsored by local businesses. The Horsebridge will also be selecting two pieces of work from the exhibition to be the covers for the printed programme in the forthcoming seasons. The programme has a print run of 8,000 and is distributed throughout the region, so you could see your artwork plastered on the front!
The Horsebridge centre is a real asset to our community; it brings both trade and profile to the town and has helped to secure Whitstable as a centre for the arts on the world map. The centre offers countless opportunities for everyone in the local community, from tiny tots and teens through to those who have seen the many changing faces of Whitstable! No one is excluded. This exhibition is a great opportunity for young people to exhibit their work in a professional gallery environment and be part of one of the biggest exhibitions in Whitstable with their creation hung proudly on the walls of one of the town’s busiest art galleries. At the peak of the Oyster festival The Horsebridge really was entertaining the masses. The gallery had 5,739 visitors for the Festival, from July 24-30. Saturday 24 was the busiest day the Horsebridge has had since it opened, with over 1,500 people visiting the centre on that one day. Even though things have since quietened down, The Horsebridge is always buzzing with life. The gallery anticipates A2 to be “a busy show over a two-week period from hopefully two hundred plus young artists!” If you would like to be involved, or know someone who would - don’t hesitate to contact The Horsebridge for an application form. ART OUTSIDE THE BUBBLE
Although we are very lucky to have all things arty right on our doorstep, Whitstable isn’t the only place where you can find great art. The Polka Dot Art Centre, situated in the village of Teynham, is breeding a unique hybrid concept… Eco-Art!
T
he Polka Dot Art Centre is a pale green grade two listed building located on the A2, between Faversham and Sittingbourne in Teynham. Run by artists Sioux Peto and Colin Barnard, the Polka Dot has a main gallery, studio spaces and a sculpture garden. The centre’s most important aim is to raise the profile of the arts in Swale. Although Whitstable doesn’t come under this part of Kent, the art centre is tackling an issue that affects each and every one of us…
The Polka Dot Art Centre pays particular focus to environmental issues such as the everincreasing problem of litter. Sioux and Colin comment, “If its not stopped now it will take over our countryside in a matter of years. We need your help.” Sioux and Colin came up with the innovative idea of ‘recycled art’ projects to try to reduce the problem. The centre even produces its own brand of unique products called ‘absolute rubbish’, which are available for sale at the centre. During the summer The Polka Dot Art Centre was responsible for setting up installations in Perry Woods and Oare Gunpowder Works, placing mutated sculptures made out of waste into green spaces. Sioux and Colin are passionate about educating people on the damaging effects of littering: “This might be our future -

ART OUTSIDE THE BUBBLE mutated growths that will replace and choke our vegetation growing everywhere and over everything. Taking over our planet and producing no food or oxygen But we can do something about it now.” Since May The Polka Dot has hosted a special recycled art project called ‘A Garden of England’ to generate awareness about littering. Sioux and Colin have used rubbish in an innovative way to create a fascinating space in the sculpture garden. The project is not only a beautiful work of art, but it also provokes thought on important global issues. The garden can be viewed on Saturdays from 10-4pm until the end of October. The art centre also recently held a succession of summer workshops for young people aged between 7 and 15 years called ‘Litter Angels’ which involved transforming recyclable items into bugs, flowers and fairies. By adapting this serious issue into something fun for kids to enjoy in their school holidays, the Polka Dot is not only encouraging creativity, but also provoking thought about the future of our planet. The Polka Dot Art Centre will be running Mosaic workshops throughout October on Tuesdays 10-4pm and taking part in the Faversham Trail as part of the Canterbury Arts festival from October 16-31 on Saturdays and Sundays. Ge t lost... in a good book Children’s book week starts on October 4th, and children’s literature has never been so cool. A decade ago if you’d admitted that you read children’s books for fun you’d probably have raised a few eyebrows. Then JK Rowling arrived on the scene with her engaging characters and page-turning plots and we all had our noses in a Harry Potter. Gadget-addicted children shunned their computers and play stations in favour of finding out what the bespectacled teen wizard was up to. Better still, they then went on to devour books by other authors. This is excellent news for a number of reasons. Research proves that avid readers:
BOOK REVIEW
write and concentrate better • Read, • Process new information more easily • Have many interests and do well in a wide variety of subjects • Are more flexible thinkers and are more open to new ideas • Deal with personal problems better without their schoolwork being affected
16
They are also well equipped to deal with the explosion of constantly changing information available through the world wide web. Children’s Book Week focuses on the sheer enjoyment of reading and aims to encourage as many children as possible to pick up a book. This year’s theme is books from around the world. That doesn’t just mean fiction. In recent years there has been an explosion in high quality non-fiction for children. Boys particularly are attracted to this genre. Publishers and editors are now producing gripping non-fiction with a strong narrative voice. After all the real world is a great story too. Reading is not only an entertainment medium, it is also a life skill, and it’s one of the
best gifts you can give to a child. Here are some recommendations from around the world: Pre-school and early readers • Handa’s Surprise by Eileen Browne • The Magic Paintbrush by Julia Donaldson and Joel Stewart • The Silence Seeker by Ben Morley Older children • Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling • All the Wild Wonders: Poems of the Earth edited by Wendy Cooling Young Teens • Huckleberry Finn - by Mark Twain • Homeless Bird - by Gloria Whelan • Habibi - by Naomi Shihab At Whitstable library Children’s Book Week starts a day early, on Sunday October 3 at 11am. They are launching this new regular story time with local children’s writer Cassie Stafford, who will be there in person, and reading her own stories. See ‘What’s on?’ for more child-related activities at the library - or why not drop in and see for yourself? They have a lovely children’s section, are very childfriendly and helpful, and will even do free photocopying if it’s for school homework!

e spend most of our lives trying to do and say the right thing. Many people, myself included, have cried in agony that the world has gone mad, that political correctness has bred more ‘isms’ rather than paved the way for equality on all levels. We avoid being ‘impolite’ for fear of being branded with all sorts of ugly terms. However, in our heads, we tend to have the thoughts anyway. These thoughts are often left to fester and leave us angry and confused... But what does all this have to do with The Trouser Trumpets? Well, this outfit is a refreshing, ice-cold glass of water in the face of political correctness and indeed, most other aspects of modern living. They say it how it is and, even though one may find it rude, one is often given the platform to get those ugly thoughts out of one’s head, determine whether the thought is legitimate and take it on or move it out! All sorts of things spring to my mind when I hear The Trouser Trumpets: Spike Milligan, Frank Zappa, Monty Python, and even some of our more modern irreverent artists such as, dare I say, Jonathan Ross and (the one with the really bad hairdo) Russell Brand. These are the types of people who say things are are most likely going to get them banned from one institution or another, but those of which one may feel: “I was thinking that very same thing, but I was just too afraid to say it.” In their own words: “The Trouser Trumpets are a Whitstable-based nine-piece comedy band, with whom immediate comparisons may be made with both The Bonzo’s and The Temperence Seven. Their repertoire stretches through an eclectic mix of tunes from old time 1920s jazz to unique reworkings of rock classics, retro TV themes and original comedic compositions. Fronted by both comedy circuit stalward Steve Graham and Jelly Jim Fisher - the composer of cult hit ‘Peter Cushing Lives in Whitstable’, The Trouser Trumpets have brought their brand
of anarchic entertainment to many festival and theatre stages over the past two years, with rave reviews. “The big band sound, produced by ukulele, sax, trumpet, trombone, a euphonium, washboards, drums, keys and stylophone is supported by a gamut of special effects. Crowd participation and synchronised back projections add to the theatrical experience; Slapstick and music hall traditions pepper the performance. A typical set includes Cocktails for Two by Spike Jones, Jollity Farm by The Bonzo’s, T-Rex’s Ride a White Swan and Close to You by The Carpenters, Frank Zappa and The Beatles all get the Trouser Trumpet treatment, along with vintage Jack Payne and classic dance arrangements taken off old 78s and arranged by, and for, the band. Whether to dance or listen, the show has audience appeal which immediately crosses both age and genre barriers.” That is very official, professional speak for ‘GO AND SEE THEM NOW!!’ or, even better, ‘For a fun-packed, mind-blowing musical experience, book The Trouser Trumpets now!’ Their new multi-media CD, ‘The Trouser Trumpets - Live in Whitstable’ includes, amongst other things, 14 songs recorded at Whitstable’s Horsebridge Centre, is now available. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Cert: 12A

rom a Zom-Rom-Com to a Police Action-Comedy, British director Edgar Wright is hardly afraid to try new things. Both his previous pictures ‘Shaun of the Dead’ (2004) and ‘Hot Fuzz’ (2007) have gone down a storm in the UK and US, so it was obvious Hollywood would be approaching him soon. He was offered various projects but turned them down to make this - the screen adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novels ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’. The film blends various genres and breaks the boundaries between film and video games for a collaborative film-going experience. Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) is a total slacker. He’s ‘between jobs’ and unmotivated; he lives with his gay friend Wallace Wells (Kieran Culkin), he’s dating a Chinese high-school girl called Knives Chau (Ellen Wong) and is the bassist in a failing band called ‘Sex Bobomb’. But his life is turned on its head when a mysterious girl from his dreams appears in reality. Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is drop-dead gorgeous, glides across town on rollerblades and sports neon-coloured hair. Scott is instantly smitten and does all he can to keep her re-appearing in his life. After he gets a date with her, she informs him that if they are going to be an item, Scott must defeat her seven evil ex-partners. Each ‘ex’ has a unique power or skill, so Scott must power-up, stay loved-up and prepare for the fights of his life. As the tagline says, ‘Love is a battle, so fight for it’. As a huge fan of the original novels, I was concerned about how this film would translate to screen. The novels are full of pop culture references, video game stylisation, and are black and white, but the characters and stories scream with colour and beauty. I was worried how that would change for the Silver Screen. But the moment the Universal logo appeared on the screen in retro game style and played the famous theme in 8-Bit sounds like in an original Nintendo game, I relaxed. In fact, no fan of the novels need worry - Wright’s screen version is so faithful it seems impossible that the film, which covers 6 volumes of text and characterisation, is only 112 minutes long. Wright’s pace and accuracy mean that not one moment of the film is stagnant; it’s always moving, always gaining momentum and forging ahead into the next scene. But don’t think that means the fights are rushed; they are prolonged and get every moment of screen time they deserve. Each battle is bigger, better and more spectacular than the last; with dizzying special effects and beautiful arcade sights and sounds. For me, the battle between Scott and the Katayanagi twins is the most astonishing. The blurring light show and the whipping and winding dragons the twins release on Scott and the band made my jaw drop. I felt like a 10-year-old watching ‘Dragonball Z’ for the first time. It’s a Computer-Animated and Manga festival that dances and glides across the screen. The picture also smears the screen with classic Comic Book attack phrases and words such as ‘Pow!’, ‘Thonk!’ and ‘Kaboom!’, all displayed in the cheesy but loveable way they should be, just like in the Adam West ‘Batman’ shows. In fact, ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ has everything. It’s wonderful to look at, it’s heartfelt and hilarious, and it’s genre-defying and bursting with originality. Even if you’re not a fan of these genres, there’s plenty to enjoy. The awkward yet engaging relationship of Scott and Ramona is a wonderful thing to watch, with lashings of comedy and modern cultural references worked deep into the script - it’s still a realistic portrayal of contemporary youth which is engaging and thrilling. Cera is fabulous as Scott and perfect for the role. Winstead nails Ramona; her actions, mannerisms and characterisation truly capture the novel’s dream-girl. Culkin is genius as Wallace and Wong is brilliant as Knives, and Chris Evans, Brandon Routh and Jason Schwartzman are easily the best of the ‘evil exes’. This is definitely up there with the best films of 2010; it’s battling with my current winner, ‘Inception’ for the top spot, but we’ll see how the rest of the year pans out.
FILM REVIEW
Verdict: 5 out of 5 – A dazzling, mind-blowing cinematic experience that everyone should see. If you loved ‘Kick-Ass’ then this will be golden for you. I’m definitely grabbing a ticket to see this fantastic picture again. Chris Haydon

TRICK OR TREAT?
TRICK OR TREAT
H

alloween is great fun for many children and adults, but can be a source of alarm or irritation for others. Most children are out for fun and delighted to receive a few sweets, but the trick element can cause mischief or even make some people feel threatened. To make Halloween a more fun experience for everyone, check out the suggestions for Halloween ‘etiquette’ in the box below. Before the 1980s, the phrase ‘Trick or treat?’ was relatively unknown in the UK. However, it’s not totally imported from America, either, and actually goes back a lot further, actually originating from a combination of two traditions: an early European Christian custom called Souling, and the Scottish practice of Guising. Souling took place on All Saints’ Day, November 1. Poor Christians walked from village to village begging for ‘soul cakes’, small currantfilled pieces of bread. In return for the food, prayers were said on behalf of the dead relatives of the donors on All Souls’ Day, November 2. Guising, short for disguising, is an ancient Scottish tradition. Groups of children dressed up to visit and entertain their neighbours by singing, dancing, reciting poems or playing
music. In return they were rewarded with sweets or coins. However, there’s no arguing that Halloween is indeed huge business in America, and in many states certain rules must be adhered to while ‘trick or treating’. We’ve summarised a few below... Halloween Etiquette • Only visit houses which display visible Halloween lights and decorations. • Enjoy yourself but respect other people’s right not to get involved. • As a house-holder, if you don’t want to join in - or if you have joined in but need to start getting younger children to bed - turn your outside lights off so trick-or-treaters know not to ring your bell. Make double-sure by putting a note near your doorbell explaining you have young children in bed. • If you do want to join in, keep your lights on and place a jack-o-lantern or other decorations in view of the street. And, of course, have plenty of pre-wrapped sweets near your door!

Local musicians Ry Robson and Solomon, both with successful track-records on the music scene, began an unlikely collaboration of Blues and Hip Hop this summer, called Natural Selection, and their first album ‘Volume 1’ is out now. You may have heard Ry with his band ‘Filthy BooZeHounds’ or playing guitar for blues legend Art Ferguson. Solomon of The Peoples Army, whilst writing his second solo album, was busy touring the UK and Holland with the Brassroots, playing the UK festival circuit, and headlining the Club Dada stage at Glastonbury. The album is an innovative blend of Jazz, Hip Hop, Funk and Blues, and is available at www. myspace.com/naturalselectionlive, Gatefield Sounds Whitstable/Herne Bay and Sound House Broadstairs. Or pick one up from their live shows, see the Gig Guide for details. More details at Rysol.music@gmail.com, facebook, or call Ry on 07789 728342. Em Peasgood has been running Open Mic/Jam nights at Deco 5 since March 2010, featuring musicians from Kent and London, from beginners to advanced players, including a few big names and a full choir. The sessions are about Pic: Lee Thompson bringing together our local music community and encourage the vast amount of existing and new music talent in our local area. However, a decline in audience numbers means they are now at risk. Many locals may not know about the sessions, and Em believes if they came once, they’d keep coming back. So why not come and see for yourself? The Jam sessions are currently held on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month at Deco 5 Jazz and Wine Bar from 8.30pm. hen you think of a Hollywood action heroine, the first star that springs to mind is Angelina Jolie. She’s sexy, hard as nails and is a huge screen presence. For director Phillip Noyce, Jolie wasn’t the original choice for his lead character in ‘Salt’; in fact, he didn’t even have a woman in mind. The role was initially intended for Tom Cruise; however he turned the film down to star in ‘Knight and Day’. Much about ‘Salt’ has been carefully hidden from under the media’s watchful eye, leaving plenty with no information about the picture, which leaves us agreeing with the movie’s tagline, ‘Who is Salt?’ Evelyn Salt (Angelina Jolie) is a CIA agent working in Washington. As she leaves the office to celebrate her anniversary with her husband, Salt is pulled back in to interview a Russian man named Vassily Orlov (Daniel Olbrychski) who’s arrived with information. Orlov tells Salt that a Russian spy will kill the Russian President in New York where he will be attending the funeral of the American Vice-President. The name of the spy is Evelyn Salt. Crippled by fear and anxiety, Salt goes on the run, but not all is as it seems. As Salt’s obscure past begins to unravel, the CIA realise that Evelyn might not be who she protests to be. In retrospect, ‘Salt’ is a Hollywood Action Movie to a tee. It’s jampacked with thrills, spills and hundreds of kills, but if you dig a little deeper, this picture provides much more than meets the eye. It’s glowing with intelligence that rival pictures don’t always possess and it has a wellstructured and multi-layered narrative that keeps you constantly guessing and forces the audience to stay on its toes. In 100 minutes, the audience is flung through America and Russia, embarking on a journey with an unknown alias who operates on both sides of the law and isn’t afraid to get blood on her hands in order to maintain a goal. Salt hardly sounds like an average Hollywood protagonist does she? Like a mixture of Jason Bourne and Fox (Jolie’s assassin character from 2008’s ‘Wanted’), Jolie’s portrayal of Salt is a dark and ingenious one. This is also the best film Phillip Noyce has directed since ‘The Bone Collector’ (1999), the film that really started Jolie’s career. ‘Salt’ is filled with fantastic cinematography, pyrotechnics and special effects that compliment Noyce’s precise direction. Personally, I think Cruise would have been wrong for this movie, he lacks the devious edge that was essential for the character of Salt to live and breathe. Jolie nails the role and is one of her best characters for a while. So, in summary, ‘Salt’ is a brilliant film that will please most audiences. It’s a great Popcorn flick, a great Action flick, but most of all, it’s a generally great film.
FILM REVIEW
Verdict: 4 out of 5: ‘Salt’ is a tightly-wound, high-octane Action Thriller that fails to lose pace, intrigue or excellence. Chris Haydon

Preheat oven to 190C / Gas mark 5.
Chop the pumpkin into even-sized chunks (about 5cm / 2 inches across). Place the pumpkin with the unpeeled garlic cloves in a roasting tin. Drizzle with a little oil and toss to coat the pieces.

Bake in the oven. Check after 20 minutes and remove the garlic at that point and set it aside. Roast the pumpkin until it’s soft and tender. Be careful not to burn it.
4
Heat a teaspoon of oil in large (at least 2.7 litre capacity) saucepan over medium heat. Add onion,

nutmeg, cumin, salt and pepper. Fry gently, stirring, until the onion is just softened slightly.
5
Add the roasted pumpkin and stock and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, until onion is completely soft and the stock has reduced a little. The more the stock reduces, the thicker the soup will be and the more concentrated the flavour.
6
Season to taste. Peel the roasted garlic and add it to the soup. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for about half an hour before pureeing in batches in a blender.
7
Serve the soup hot with cream and/or grated nutmeg/ chilli flakes if preferred.
Note: You’ll need a pumpkin which weighs about 1.5Kg for this recipe.
INGREDIENTS • 3-5 medium cloves garlic, unpeeled • 1kg (2lbs) pumpkin, peeled and deseeded • Olive oil • 1 large onion, finely chopped • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • Salt and pepper, to taste • 1 litre (1 3/4 pints) vegetable or chicken stock • Cream, for serving (optional) • Freshly grated nutmeg, or chilli flakes for serving (optional)

A PEEK INTO THE PAST...
October 1066 - The Battle of Hastings On October 14th, 1066, King Harold II, the last AngloSaxon King of England, was defeated by the Norman forces of William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings. According to legend, at the end of a bloody, all-day battle, Harold was shot in the eye with an arrow and killed and his forces were destroyed. Just over two weeks earlier, William, the duke of Normandy, had invaded England, claiming his right to the English throne. According to Norman historians, Edward the Confessor, the childless English king, had promised to make his cousin William his heir. On his deathbed, however, Edward changed his mind and granted the kingdom to Harold Godwine, head of the leading noble family in England. In January 1066, King Edward died, and Harold Godwine was proclaimed King Harold II. William immediately countered his claim. On September 28, 1066, William landed in England with approximately 7000 troops and cavalry. He seized the town of Pevensey then marched to Hastings, where
he paused to organize his forces. On October 13, Harold arrived near Hastings with his army, and the next day William led his forces out to give battle. After his victory, William marched on London and received the city’s submission. On Christmas Day, 1066, he was crowned the first Norman king of England and the Anglo-Saxon phase of English history came to an end.

The absolute best tribute, to the absolute best rock band of all time, is coming to Whitstable on November 5 It is rare for a tribute band to be given the approval of the band they are paying tribute to. So imagine the surprise of Letz Zep - at that time, a part time band playing Zep tunes for their own entertainment, and for the enjoyment of small crowds in small venues, when in walks Robert Plant. Not only did the legendary Led Zeppelin vocalist give the band the thumbs up and best wishes on the night, he went on to discuss the band in interviews, including a Q magazine feature in which he said “I walked in, I saw me.” Letz Zep have been featured on BBC1, BBC2, ITV, in Classic Rock and Kerrang, Q and Mojo, and following a chance meeting with Jimmy Page received the ultimate accolade when invited by Led Zeppelin themselves to perform at the official launch party for Led Zeppelin’s ‘Mothership’ album. Letz Zep are now a touring force in Europe and are considered the biggest and best tribute to Led Zeppelin. Demand for the band is such that they regularly tour in Spain, Greece, Holland, Belgium, Italy and France and have also played in Venezuela, Australia and New Zealand. It was in New Zealand that their show promoter received a call from Led Zeppelin’s management company, threatening to take legal action if the band did not stop using a photo of Robert Plant to promote the gig. The photo was actually Letz Zep vocalist Billy Kulke. Led Zeppelin have been offered millions of dollars to reform for one last tour, but Robert Plant wasn’t interested after the success of his multi award winning platinum selling ‘Raising Sand’ album. The Letz Zep

vocalist was one of the names in the hat as a possible replacement, and Jimmy Page forwarded Billy’s name, but unfortunately bassist John Paul Jones was against the idea of using any vocalist but Plant. This, the second gig of newly-formed company WhitLive, is at The East Quay, November 5 at 8.30pm. “If you closed your eyes you really could imagine that it was Plant and Page up there. And if you opened them again the illusion didn’t really go away” Jeremy Clarkson, Sunday Times “There’s a band on tour at the moment called Letz Zep. They’re fantastic and I recommend you go see them” Jonathan Ross Tickets are £10 in advance and available from: www. wegottickets.com, Hotel Continental, Windy Corner Stores, Gatefield Sounds Whitstable/Herne Bay and Canterbury Rock.
