Where do people who live in a ‘holidaytown’ go on holiday? Somewhere fabulous!
D
ADVERTORIAL
eborah Mylcrist has been letting holiday homes through Hillcross Estates in Whitstable for several years and has built a thriving business with more than 50 properties on her books. But where do Whitstable locals go to get away from it all? The answer to this question was the seed of Deborah’s new business, holiday homes that were bought to be used by their owners. “It’s like a boutique holiday club, all the property owners are known to me personally,” Deborah explains, “and I have been to many of the properties personally. If the property is described as five minutes from the beach than it IS five minutes from the beach. The thing to remember is that these properties are used by the owners for their own holidays; they were bought because their owners fell in love with them, and wanted to return time and again to relax and unwind. The photos are honest pictures and the properties are as described.”

And it’s not all ‘buckets and spades’. Yes, there are idyllic homes in sun-drenched getaways - like Zauri View in Goa, which sleeps up to 12 - but there is also Chalet Verjus in the French Alps for the winter sports fanatics, and other locations include Lanzarote, Spain, Morocco, The Caribbean, and Cyprus - and the list is growing. Low-cost airlines have made organising your own holiday a very easy and affordable option, and having access to the property owner means you know exactly what facilities are available when you arrive. Local knowledge is worth its weight in gold - you can plan your stay before you depart, know what to do, where to eat and what to look out for. I
have to admit that, walking past the fuchsia sign for Annie-Lou’s on Oxford Street, I have always averted my gaze and quickened my step, for fear of seeing gorgeous things for lots of money which I would then desperately need and absolutely have to buy.
But it’s not like that at all! Yes, they are gorgeous things, but the pricing will surprise you. It’s all the brainchild of Anna Squirrell and Alex Ledsham, who bought, refurbished and stocked the shop on a shoe-string and opened last May. Alex and Anna are a young couple, busy with plans for their wedding in May this year, and due to move into a new house in Whitstable on their return from honeymoon. They’d always wanted a shop, and had researched potential locations, with Whitstable at the top of their list. So when Anna, an NVQ assessor, was told she was being made redundant, and the shop became free on the same day, it seemed like the hand of fate. They’d been to trade shows and knew what they wanted to stock, so went ahead and took over the lease. In an unexpected twist, Anna’s redundancy was retracted, so she now works Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and is in the shop the rest of the week. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays her mum or sister provide cover. Alex, who has a full-time job, helps out when he can. “In emergencies,” Anna quips, with a grin. The couple are pleased with what they’ve achieved in the past few months. The other businesses in the area are also pleased because they’re bringing trade to this end of town. “It is more difficult here,” Alex explains. “We’re quite far away from where people eat, drink and congregate.” But the business has grown and the couple have managed to stock a real variety of lines – from 75p heart-shaped stones to larger pieces of furniture. 5
Anna is really pleased with the reputation they’ve managed to build up already. “We get lovely comments – even the snow didn’t stop people. We had loads of customers at Christmas who I remembered seeing in the shop in October, browsing and promising to be back for their Christmas presents.” But you get the impression that Anna just loves having the shop and being there: “I love it even when people only stop in to say hi!”
She is also flexible and innovative in her approach to the business, offering an online shop at www.annielous.co.uk, as well as Annie-Lou’s parties, which have been really successful. And the next plan is to provide a wedding service.
really is something for everyone. I’ll certainly be going back and stocking up on pretty things.
“We’re researching all of this kind of thing anyway, for our wedding,” Anna explains, “and we already have customers who come in and buy the flower garlands, bunting, or cake stands for their special day.” Alex continues: “What we’re thinking is that people can come and spend some time with Anna, tell her what they want, look through the catalogues to find exactly the look they’re after – then we can source the items they need and provide them to them at a discounted price in return for using Annie-Lou’s.” Watch this space… Even without any of the other things, Anna would have plenty to occupy her - you may not even realise from the shop front just how big the shop is inside - there’s another entire room at the back of the shop, also full of lovely things. Anna sources a lot of her stock locally, and luckily has very talented family who make jewellery, gift cards, and picture frames for the shop, so she really can keep her prices down. The Cath Kidson and French and Floral lines have guide prices, but Anna’s ethos is to keep things affordable, so there
And Anna is giving away 10 £5 vouchers for an IMP draw - email editorial@theimp or write to The Whitstable IMP, PO Box 290, CT5 9AH with the title ANNIELOU’S IMP DRAW and your name, address and phone number to be in with a chance. You’ll be surprised what you could come away with… Annie Lou’s is at 64a Oxford Street, Whitstable, www.annielous.co.uk, or contact them at: info@annielous.co.uk or 01227 264499. Christina Birkett

to support Marie Curie nurses in your local area and make a real difference to the lives of those affected by cancer. Camilla, who volunteers every March for Marie Curie in memory of her mum, says: “Please consider sparing an hour or two on any of the days to take part in a street collection. It’s an amazing feeling to be part of the Daffodil Appeal and you meet some incredibly generous and inspiring people. This is a charity very close to my heart – Marie Curie nurses do such an incredible job of making the last few weeks of a patient’s life comfortable, and they bring huge comfort to the families and loved ones of those dying from cancer. Please help Marie Curie and make this the biggest Daffodil Appeal yet for Canterbury and Whitstable.”
To volunteer for a street collection or for more information, contact Camilla at camillajohn7@hotmail.co.uk or 07799 897 168.
Marie Curie Cancer Care was established in 1948, the same year as the NHS. More than 2,700 nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals help provide care for terminally ill patients in the community and in Marie Curie hospices, along with support for their families. This year they expect to provide care to around 29,000 people with cancer and other terminal illnesses.
Camilla is calling on local residents to volunteer an hour or two of their time for a street collection on March 4, 5 & 6 in Canterbury, or a shop collection at Whitstable Sainsbury’s on the same days. Volunteers are also needed the weekend before (25th and 26th February) at the Tesco Extra in Whitstable. Over 20,000 volunteers will take to the streets across the country, but they desperately need more volunteers to help locally, in Canterbury and Whitstable. No previous experience is required – just a smiling face and an hour or two of your time. Just one hour in an average collection can provide two hours of nursing care for a terminally ill patient. ARTISTS & EXHIBITIONS... Trish Flynn

alking into Trish Flynn’s studio space was like discovering an exotic land. Inquisitive eyes stared down at me from canvases painted with warped tribal faces. Masked men and life-size painted figures lined the walls. Twinkling lights dangled from the ceiling, plants spilled over the room, calm sea scenes and portraits of furious faces hung high on the walls, a winding staircase led up to a wall dotted with religious figures, while strange little creatures, nestled in the undergrowth, watched from shelves.
I walked into a space that Trish had filled with the memories of a lifetime, a room for her imagination to run wild. I saw all the faraway lands that Trish had discovered; the hot earth of Spain, the barren, patterned landscapes of Australia, the rich colours of Morocco; fiery gold and burning reds. Originally the space that Trish inhabits was built as a tropical fish shop near the Hotel Continental, but she transformed it into a magical artists’ grotto when she took it on. The Whitstable artist has had a colourful career - she travelled and ran a health food

shop and Vegetarian cafe in Canterbury for many years before finding her forte in art. After studying a full time foundation course in Hastings, a variety of evening classes and receiving a first in a fine art degree, graduating in 1990, Trish began to do what she had always wanted to do- to create! She spoke of coming out of art college after hearing all the 'oughts and shoulds' related to making art and how she broke free from these confines. She told me how she entered a 'dream space' after leaving college and she has never looked back. Trish has exhibited widely in Canterbury,
ARTISTS & EXHIBITIONS... at the Marlowe Theatre and the Sydney Cooper Gallery, and of course has had extensive exhibitions in Whitstable.
Trish uses colour without inhibition and her work can be simultaneously light-hearted and charged with meaning.
In late spring, she will exhibit with fellow artist Shaukat Khan in London's eclectic Brick Lane.
She expressed how she can choose whether to create something quickly in a moment of creativity, or how often she spends hours labouring over one piece.
In the time I spent in Trish's company, we spoke of magic carpets and murals of Mecca, of searching for spirituality- these are the things that seem to inspire her, things she reads and dreams about. Trish has found inspiration for her art in an abundance of places, she has travelled to many countries and experienced a wealth of cultures. When I asked her what kind of art inspires her, she said that she takes a lot of influence from 'outsider art' and art that is ancient or 'primitive' in nature. A big source of inspiration for Trish is living by the sea, she told of how she spent a summer sitting on the roof watching the changing moods of the sea and capturing it on canvas. Trish's work has a fabulous vibrancy, an energy about it that many struggle to create. The overgrown paradise of her studio seems to give rise to this energy.
After studying an icon painting course with the renowned artist and expert Ann Welch, who runs the course in Faversham, Trish is now able to count this elite form of craftsmanship amongst her bounty of skills. During this process Trish uses gold leaf, a notoriously difficult material to work with, to create her depictions of figures such as Buddha, Angel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary. Trish describes herself as always looking for new ways of creating art and new forms of inspiration. “I will continue to search until I drop down dead,” she laughed. It is this hunger for adventure that gives Trish's art a magical quality. It is pure escapism.

The Secrets of The Whitstable Diet
W
hitstable local Dr Clive Askew has been in the shellfish industry all his working life. A retired Marine Biologist, he was involved in starting the Oyster Festival in 1985 and running it in 1986. Here he shares some of his expertise and research.
Over the past 5 years I have been investigating the health benefits of seafood, but sticking to the evidence base and not running with unsubstantiated ‘superfood’ claims. A few years ago when I was investigating old advice on the NHS Direct website that fish and seafood would raise cholesterol, now fortunately long deleted, I got a few surprises. Talking to leading experts, I began to understand that foods which contain ready-made cholesterol, such as prawns, squid and eggs, do not raise blood cholesterol for the vast majority of people. Many people still mistakenly think they should avoid prawns especially, because of their cholesterol content.
When I asked about heart-health advice at Whitstable Health Centre, I was pleasantly surprised to be given a very sensible sheet, put out by Eastern and Coastal Kent PHT, which included eating fish 3 times a week and shellfish in moderation 2-3 times a week within a balanced diet. The list of shellfish included the crustaceans like prawns, crab and lobster, which people had so often been told to avoid. 12
Having worked with shellfish all my life and knowing their importance to the town, I dubbed it the Whitstable Diet. It made sense because fish and shellfish are low in calories but also low in most of the things that are wrong in the modern Western diet, fat, not just saturated fat but also the omega-6 fats which most of us get in great excess from the likes of sunflower and corn oil. Recently the European Food Safety Authority has recognised that the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids in seafood help to maintain heart health directly, even though they do it without lowering cholesterol. They also help to maintain normal blood pressure and lower triglycerides, which are also associated with risk of heart disease. So there is more to the heart-healthy diet than just lowering cholesterol. Keeping up those marine omega-3s is also important. Many vegetarians know the importance of omega 3s as well as keeping omega-6s in balance. If you’re not vegetarian then seafood is the most direct way of keeping that balance. The tiny minority of people who do concentrate cholesterol directly from their food have a genetic trait called familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH). They are generally advised not to eat more than 300mgm of cholesterol a day, but that amounts to about 150g of prawns, so there is really no problem. So the benefits of seafood are as much about the things they don’t contain, especially lots of calories and fat, as the things they do, those marine omega-3s that protect the heart. Whitefish is also especially good at satiating appetite, but that is another secret for another day.

JOY LANE COMMUNITY POOL DATE UP
F
ollowing a hugely successful campaign and much help from the community in voting on the day, Joy Lane Community Swimming Pool won £50,000 from The People’s Millions back in November of last year. And Mark Ashley-Jones, Deputy Head of Joy Lane Primary School, was true to his word and jumped into the cold, half-filled pool - much to the delight of the children watching. Now everything has calmed down, and that cold, wet event is behind him, Mark kindly took some time from a busy term to tell the IMP how it all came about, and give us an update on the fund-raising efforts. “Having used the pool myself as a sports student in 1989 I felt a refurbishment project was something I could get my teeth into. We formed a little working group who came up with ideas for raising money, when a detailed feasibility report suggested £100,000 would be required for modernisation, so the pool could operate as a community pool all year round.” Last year they secured funding from the KCC Small Community Capital Projects Fund, as well as some money from the school budget. “A number of people are also fund-raising on the school’s behalf, and Whitstable Rotary have adopted the project as one of their main fund raising objectives 2010-11,” Mark explains, “which means that sufficient funds are in place to proceed.” “It was suggested that we apply for The People’s Millions, so after filling in a detailed form, we were short-listed and 13
then interviewed by a Grants Officer from The People’s Millions Team.” The group also had to prove to the assessor that they had, or could raise, the rest of the money. “Finally, we heard over half-term that we were through to the final eight.” And the rest is history! So what happens now? “We need to replace fibreglass sheets with insulated panelling on all sides and all of the roof, tile the lower pool surround, place hi-density plastic grates over drain gullies, remove the footbath, introduce changing room panelling and frames with bench seating and locker units, toilets and shower areas, and install an air heater/humidifier…” – among other things! It sounds like the hard work has just begun, but with the help of the community it will all be worth it. The modernised pool will be available year-round for Joy Lane pupils and those of other local schools, and is ideally placed to meet the needs of a range of different users from all areas of our local community. And the community continues to rally round – the project now has support from Steve Stubbs and The Whitstable Toy Run Association, as well as Friends of Joy Lane who have been instrumental in driving the project forward. Mark adds, “We are lucky to have such a supportive community and I’d like to thank all involved, with special mention to George Wilson, Andrew Liversey of Canterbury College, Matt Wrench of Turboprint and Kim Foster of Whitstable Rotary.” If you would like to contribute to the fundraising efforts, please contact Mark on 01227 261430. Although Whitstable is famed for the treasures to be found on Harbour Street, Oxford street boasts a variety of thriving establishments, the buzzing Deco 5 wine bar is a neighbouring business and Whitstable Framers are also conveniently placed just next door to The Fish Slab. Bridge House Arts have also made a move further down the street and are now directly opposite the gallery. 2011 is off to a great start for The Fish Slab, and they have some fabulous exhibitions lined up this year. Another fundraising 'anonymous art' exhibition will take place from 20th-27th July, after last year's 'A4 anonymous' exhibition was such a success. In August a collective artist show will also be hosted at the gallery. Spaces are still available for this year, so if you are interested in having your work in one of Whitstable's most sought after galleries then don't hesitate to contact Lin Fletcher at lindafletcher123@talktalk.net Recently the gallery hosted a successful two week art 'sale' with established Whitstable artists' work lining the walls. The exhibition was a mixed media show featuring the work of Liz Shedden, Ann Diggens, Selina Firth, Sarah Stokes, Cathy McTurk, Jon Bird, Steph Brunton, Laurence and Lin Fletcher, Terry Merry, Barbara Drinkwater, Gretchen Goddard, and this month’s cover artist -Trish Flynn. Top 10 Films of 2010 Chris Haydon
10. ‘Cherrybomb’ (dir/s: Lisa Barros D’Sa & Glenn Leyburn, Cert: 15) Rupert Grint stars with Kimberley Nixon and Robert Sheehan in this coming-of-age Drama. Grint plays Malachy, a young Irish boy, hanging out with his friend Luke (Sheehan) - but everything changes when his boss’s daughter Michelle (Nixon) moves back into town. As a weekend of competition to win her heart begins, their acts become more dangerous and outrageous, distracting them from what’s happening around them. A fresh, contemporary study of teenage life, the end result is sheer excellence.
9. ‘The Town’
(dir: Ben Affleck, Cert: 15)
Charlestown, Boston; a city ruled by its criminal underworld. Bank robber Doug MacRay (Affleck) realises he has feelings for one of the bank’s managers, Claire (Rebecca Hall). His best friend and partner James (Jeremy Renner) is obsessed with the next job and suspicious of Doug’s actions. MacRay has to balance his friends and love-life, and evade the FBI. An exquisite feature, blending grit, emotion and realism to create a compelling and believable Crime Thriller, thanks to Renner’s outstanding performance, and Affleck’s precise and accurate direction.
8. ‘Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call’ - New Orleans’ (dir: Werner
Herzog, Cert: 18)
Terence McDonagh (Nicolas Cage) is a corrupt police detective working in post-Katrina New Orleans. Fuelled by his raging drug and gambling addictions, and his ‘love’ for his prostitute girlfriend Frankie (Eva Mendes), McDonagh’s life spirals downwards and he joins forces with a group of notorious drug dealers. Herzog is a genius and Cage gives one of his two best performances since ‘Leaving Las Vegas’ (1995). His warped and manic behaviour is something of rare genius and fantastic to watch. Cage is my actor of 2010 and Rapper Xzibit also gives a hilarious performance as drug lord Big Fate. It will offend, appall and, certainly, entertain.
7. ‘Unstoppable’
(dir: Tony Scott, Cert: 12A)
Barnes (Denzel Washington), a veteran railroad engineer, is paired with conducting rookie Will Colson (Chris Pine) for a day’s work on the tracks. An average day soon takes a turn for the worse with a driverless runaway train on their tracks, under full power, carrying toxic chemicals and hurtling towards a highly populated town. The pair must join forces in a race to stop the train before it destroys all in its path. A tense and adrenaline-inducing rollercoaster ride, this is the most fun you’ll have at the cinema all year.
6. ‘The Illusionist’ (dir: Sylvian Chomet, Cert: PG) Another dazzling animation from French filmmaker Chomet. A French illusionist is out of work as a band takes his spot at his local venue, so he packs up and heads for Scotland. He meets Alice, a young woman who becomes his companion as he performs throughout rural Edinburgh. Their adventure changes his perception of life, and his actual life, forever. The most beautiful and heart-wrenching film I’ve seen for years. It is practically silent, yet Chomet’s score washes through, leaving you bursting with joy and wallowing in sorrow. If you see one foreign film this year, make it this one.
17
TOP 10
5. ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1’ (dir: David Yates, Cert: 12A)
Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) are out alone into the big bad world, fulfilling Dumbledore’s task of finding and destroying all of Voldemort’s (Ralph Fiennes) Horcruxes, to finally defeat him and save the wizarding world from evil. During their quest, they become familiar with the term ‘Deathly Hallows’ and its origins - three objects which, collectively, give a wizard ultimate power. Yates’ cinematography is visually arresting; the group all give fantastic performances, and you’re left craving part 2. The ‘darkest’ one yet.
4. ‘Easy A’ (dir: Will Gluck, Cert: 15) Olive Penderghast (Emma Stone) is a teenager at high school, who is forced into lie about a ‘date’ she never had and is soon the talking point of the school. When she’s asked to help average guys who can’t get a girl and need a confidence boost, and continues the pretense, she is soon labelled by her fellow students. Blindly trying to stop others getting hurt, Olive realises the only person hurting is herself. Stone’s comic timing and sarcastic manner are perfect. Rooted in 80s teen culture, this is the most original Comedy of the year.
3. ‘Kick-Ass’ (dir: Matthew Vaughn, Cert: 15) Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) is a lonely high school student who spends his days reading comic books. His dream of being a superhero becomes reality, with ‘Kick-Ass’; a hero with no powers and no responsibilities. After a video is uploaded online, ‘Kick-Ass’ soon inspires others, and is joined by ‘Hit-Girl’ (Chloe Grace Moretz), ‘Big Daddy’ (Nicolas Cage) and ‘Red Mist’ (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). Moretz is my actress of 2010 and stunning as ‘Hit-Girl’; her potty mouth and her incredible killing skills are a delight to watch, and Cage gives his second best performance of the year. A hilarious carnival of blood, foul language and hilarious clichés.
2. ‘Toy Story 3’ (dir: Lee Unkrich, Cert: U) Andy, leaving for college, places his toys in a bag meant for the attic. Accidentally taken to Sunnyside day care centre, they believe they were abandoned, and it’s up to Woody (Tom Hanks) to convince them otherwise. Buzz (Tim Allen) and Jessie (Joan Cusack) want to start a new life at the centre but things take a turn for the worse when head toy Losto (Ned Beatty) notices a plan for escape being hatched. A masterpiece; well-crafted, with a pitch-perfect narrative and deep emotional themes that leave tears in your eyes. It’s funny too; Michael Keaton’s Ken is the star of the show and the funniest character of 2010. The best computer-animated film of the year.
1. ‘Inception’ (dir: Christopher Nolan, Cert: 12A) Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is an ‘extractor’; a highly skilled thief, able to access information from subjects through their subconscious whilst they dream. Desperate to return home to his children, Cobb is given a final shot at redemption which involves ‘inception’ - the planting of an idea into a subject’s mind. He must build a dream map which consists of various levels in order to create the perfect crime. But Cobb is battling with his own demons, affecting his work, his life and those around him. Ground-breaking, visually impeccable and extremely intelligent, this is a brain-bashing journey deep into the mind and the human psyche. DiCaprio is outstanding, and Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy and Marion Cotillard also present wonderful performances. I will remember 2010 for this film.

“OUR AIM IS TO PROMOTE INDEPENDENCE, CHOICE AND DIGNITY”
A million things have gone through my mind since we decided to do a review on Panic Cell. The thing that resonates most is something that I am convinced is the malaise of the 21st century; complacency.
W
e humans do tend to get comfortable even when our situation is far from perfect and, after a while, we perceive that situation to be normal. One of the most remarkable things that can happen in this type of scenario is a sudden change. A boat-rocker that smashes the air of complacency, creates a sense of panic, and forces us to review our situation and not only change it, but make it better.
May I suggest that in 2011, this boat-rocker be PANIC CELL? Made up of Nathan Wood (Guitar), Bobby Town (Bass), Luke Bell (vocals), Rob Hicks(Drums) and Harj Virdee
(Guitars), this is not the type of band that wallows in complacency. They take life by the hand, swing it round the room and force those who listen to them to question everything that seems normal. They create a sense of panic and force their listeners to make changes for the better. No amount of words will ever do this band and their music justice, nothing would compare with seeing them live - but here is the next-best thing: the photographs of Lee Thompson (Local Talent in the November 2010 IMP). Lee recently went to one of PANIC CELL’s gigs and documented it in the most outstanding way. I am sure that if I put one of PANIC CELL’s CDs on and looked at Lee’s photographs, it
20
would come a very close second to actually being at their gig in the flesh. A great band, complemented by a highly talented photographer. Between them, they work together to drag us out of our complacency. This review is much more than the words on the page, but about the photographs and the musicians featured in them. Let 2011 be the year in which complacency is ripped from the dictionary and torn into a million shreds. If you’re struggling a bit with the tearing, get a little help from a band which really believes in better... See them live at Colchester Arts Centre on March 18, the Wedgewood Rooms in Plymouth March 20, or listen to their three albums (available from HMV, Amazon, Play.com or their website): ‘Bitter Part of Me’, ‘What Doesnt Kill Us’ and ‘Fire it Up’, which has had great reviews. www.paniccell.com www.myspace.com/paniccell www.youtube.com/paniccell www.twitter.com/paniccell www.facebook.com/paniccell

The King’s Speech Cert: 12A
S
ome British films capture audiences all around the globe; The Full Monty’ (dir: Peter Cattaneo, 1997) or ‘Billy Elliot’ (dir: Stephan Daldry, 2000), for example. But we’re best-known for wonderful period pieces - and our latest is be storming at the box-office. Already in line for awards from all major ceremonies, including 14 BAFTA nominations, director Tom Hooper’s ‘The King’s Speech’ is nothing less than a winner.
The film follows the story of King George VI (Colin Firth); the monarch who reluctantly took the throne when his brother King Edward VIII (Guy Pearce) abandoned it as Britain was heading toward the Second World War. George, or ‘Bertie’ as he’s more commonly known, suffers from a dreadful stammer that causes him to freeze and stumble through public readings and announcements. His wife, Queen Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) decides to seek help and in doing so finds Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush); a zany and unusual speech therapist from Australia who forms a grand partnership with ‘Bertie’ and uses his bizarre methods to build confidence within him, allowing him to speak freely. As his war-time speech approaches, the pair train relentlessly and achieve incredible results. Sometimes a film just captures an audience, filling you with such rich emotions that every scene is a visual pleasure you want to re-visit again and again. ‘The King’s Speech’ is one of those movies. Hooper has pulled out all the stops and made this film with great skill and elegance. The story is one of the most joyous and uplifting I’ve seen in years, it leaves you smiling throughout and hopeful for the pair’s success. This picture shows that obstacles in our lives can be overcome - a message that never loses any social significance. We watch ‘Bertie’ and Lionel as two friends or two partners, we don’t really see them as a royal and an Aussie. This is a heartwarming ‘Bromance’ which is surprisingly hilarious - I was shocked by just how funny it was. Their chemistry allows so much room to bump heads and let their egos cause friction; ‘Bertie’ frequently loses his temper and spurts royal jargon, whilst Lionel is the king in his office and enjoys pushing his clients’ buttons – treating a royal just as another patient. 23
FILM REVIEW
The King’s Speech Personally, I think this is the best British film since ‘An Education’ (dir: Lone Scherfig, 2009) because it gathers everything we do best with cinema and mixes it together. ‘The King’s Speech’ is frequently funny, engaging, believable and wonderful, it achieves more than many films could ever dream of - but the core of the film is it’s stars. Firth is jaw-dropping, it’s as simple as that. It’s a crime that he’s never won big awards in America, but he will in 2011. No other leading male performance can touch him here. He plays the King is such a loving and creative manner; he truly becomes his role and aims to perfect everything about it. His stammer is incredible and the word pronunciation and breathing pauses only add to the sheer realism. Rush is astonishing too. Lionel lifts the audience’s spirit with his wacky methods, his sidesplitting humour and his belief in ‘Bertie’.
Bonham Carter is also a joy to watch and she brings plenty of laughs and smiles to the audience as Queen Elizabeth. The supporting cast includes the brilliant Timothy Spall as Winston Churchill and Michael Gambon as ‘Bertie’s’ strict and unforgiving father, King George V. The picture also sports a score so beautiful it brings a tear to the eye. Composer Alexandre Desplat uses gentle piano and soft percussion to cushion this masterful picture. ‘The King’s Speech’ is not only the best British film I’ve seen in a while, it’s also one of the best films I’ve seen recently, and I know this will feature on my top 10 of 2011. Verdict: 5 out of 5 - A total triumph; an utter masterpiece that will win your vote as well as your heart. Chris Haydon
