WELCOME TO THE JUNE ISSUE OF THE WHITSTABLE IMP!

T

he sun is shining as I type, but it’s still a little bit brisk outside. The winter clothes are in a box but I have had to raid it a few times over the last week or so... I have a feeling, though, that this is going to be a lovely summer. There’s plenty to see and do - our 2010 Oyster Festival guide should get you in the mood - and I think you will need to start deciding what you want to do now, there are just so many options...

We have Arts from Stephen Hall Glass, Music from Get Ape and this month we even have Puzzles, as well as our regular features. I hope your June is a good one, we’ll see you in July with the full 2010 Oyster Festival Programme. All the best from The IMP Team The Whitstable IMP, PO Box 290, Whitstable CT5 9AH

Whitstable Oyster Festival 2010

SATURDAY sets the tone for the week, with something for every taste and age. Whitstable’s streets, beaches and spaces come alive with performers, artists and exhibitors playing to the crowds, bringing old traditions up to date and offering entertainment of all kinds. People who enjoy walking will welcome the Canterbury Group of the Ramblers who will be taking a 6 mile walk and returning just in time to enjoy Samba Pelo Mar as they wait for the Landing of the Oysters on Long Beach. Then children from all of Whitstable’s seven primary schools are expected to take part in the Oyster Parade which finishes outside the library in Oxford Street. While waiting for the Parade people can enjoy music at the Entertainment Outpost or pop into the Museum for one of several special events, including a new exhibition ‘Beside the Seaside: the great British holiday!’, children’s quests, and more special events later in the week.

The same morning there’s a free art workshop (Beach Art) on Reeves Beach and children can work off any excess energy in the Pearl Dive at the Swimming Pool. Back at the Harbour the EPICentre Food Fair will be in full swing, with more than 40 producers offering totally delicious foods, and Dead Horse Morris will be dancing in no less than four locations during the day. In the afternoon look out for Samba Pelo Mar, Happy Accidents, the Lindley Players Unplugged, and other street performances in the afternoon too! The Oyster Lacemakers will be outside Whitstable Improvement Trust where they will stay all week, and Splashpals will be in the harbour showing off their rescue skills. Up on Tankerton Slopes is a huge Dance Jam bringing as many people as possible – hopefully two thousand and twelve - onto the slopes to dance in celebration of London 2012.

Summer is well on its way, and with the sun comes the Whitstable Oyster Festival! Full listings for the 2010 Oyster Festival will be published in the July issue of the IMP. In the meantime here are some of the Festival highlights Whitstable can look forward to… and by the time July arrives there may well be even more.

The evening is mainly about music. All kinds of music. Arthur Kaye & the Originals are at the Horsebridge and Loose Change is appearing at the Whitstable Brewery Beer Festival. On Tankerton Slopes, dance gives way to Slopes of Sound, with Emily and the Beats and Sundown. Elsewhere the tone is mellower. Whitstable Whistlefish and friends are singing songs from around the world at St Peters Church, Faronel are giving a concert of early music at St Alphege Church and Whitstable Music Society is presenting a Classical Guitar Recital at the Methodist Church, while Deco 5 just down the road feature Tiffaney Wells, a cabaret-style female impersonator who mixes music and humour.

1st Whitstable Scout Brass Band, and enjoy a performance from the Phoenix Performing Arts Group. Along the beach towards Tankerton is the infamous Mud Tug (this year sponsored by The IMP), the Oyster Festival Petanque Competition at Beach Walk and the Artisan Craft Market, a new arts and craft market where every handmade piece has its own unique story (also at the Umbrella Centre in Oxford Street). History and nature buffs can enjoy a Coastal History Walkabout with Kent Wildlife Trust and dog lovers will doubtless make their way to Scallywags Dog Show in Marine Crescent. If your tastes are more sedentary then why not try your hand at a new craft? There are free taster classes in Glass Painting and Jewellery-making at the Horsebridge. It’s a musical afternoon with Moveable Feast at the Duke of Cumberland and Boxing Octopus at the Old Neptune, leading into a musical evening with Rubber Biscuit at the Whitstable Brewery Beer Festival, the Whitstable World Music Workshop at St Mary’s Hall / Umbrella Centre (that’s African, Caribbean and World Jazz grooves), and more live music at Deco 5. Outside, brave souls will be embarking on a Storytelling Ghost Walk with Scandalmongers – a big hit last year until it got completely rained off! This time around organisers are hoping to finish the route before drowning...

SUNDAY is the day to think ‘seaside’, with MONDAY Whitstable really begins to the Sea Sunday service and parade, Ladies of the Waves running amok in the crowds, wandering shanty singers, and other hilarious street performers. If you are at the EPICentre you can catch the infamous oyster eating competition, listen to

show its literary side. Alice is in Wonderland (Whitstable Castle, actually); reading gardens appear everywhere; children jump into the library pavement (not really, it’s actually a free Pavement Art event with artist Paul George) and writer Tom Hart Dyke comes to the Horsebridge.

From Saturday onwards, the Horsebridge is hosting the AI Open Art Exhibition, the Fish Slab Gallery has Fish Slab Anonymous, where you can pick up a masterpiece for just £25, Caxton Contemporary is showing From Whitstable With Love, and both Liz Shedden and Ann Diggens

In Plot to Page, locations throughout Whitstable will be supplied with books from Kent Libraries so people can take time out and enjoy the simple pleasure of reading. On Tankerton Slopes the Little Blue Hut will be home to the Laureate Squad where Canterbury’s Poet Laureate will give a Masterclass. The Crab & Winkle will be the venue for Whitstable Delectable the same evening – a combined literary-culinary experience not to be missed! Not literary? Never mind - Whitstable Week begins at Whitstable Yacht Club, nicely complementing the science and craft activity Deep Sea Diver! at Whitstable Museum, and Whitstable residents can begin constructing a mini army in Terracotta Mini Are Me (led by Stephen Hall), so there’s still lots to do. And in the evening the OyOySter Comedy! season begins its spectacular line up with Stewart Lee and Bridget Christie at the Whitstable Playhouse, while the Oyster Singers will be serving up an evening of songs from far and near at the Methodist Church in Argyle Road.

TUESDAY is a gentler day, with time to enjoy the more traditional things in life. If you haven’t found the time so far, now would be a good day to visit one of the many art exhibitions that will be running throughout the week.

have Open Studios behind the Fish Slab Gallery. To keep children amused and busy, Let’s Look at Boats, organised by Whitstable Yacht Club, has fun demonstrations on the beach by the club, and Professor Des Turner’s Punch & Judy Show returns. This has been moved to the garden at Whitstable Umbrella Community Centre but is still completely free. The evening has something to suit practically every taste. The Duke of Cumberland Hotel has arranged free Sea Shanties in the courtyard; author Danny Rhodes has a two–part workshop where he talks about his award-winning Whitstable–based book in A Place to Write; and Tony Blake returns to the Horsebridge with 100 Years of Whitstable, shown through a selection of rare archive footage. The Oyster Festival Quiz makes a welcome return, with a special trophy awarded to honour the memory of the ebullient Lesley Bhola. Walkers and nature-lovers will enjoy a Sunset Saunter with Kent Wildlife Trust. Finally, both Jarred Christmas and Henning When are appearing at the Playhouse in a double comedy bill...

WEDNESDAY means the Festival is more than half over, so it’s time to turn apathy into energy and try something new. For families, Random Kites on Tankerton Slopes will blow any cobwebs away, and then small people might enjoy some storytime and art and craft with Little Oysters - Rupert’s Undersea Adventure at Whitstable Museum.

In the afternoon there’s still plenty of time to make your own Terracotta Mini Are Me which is open to people of any age, and slide in a trip to Whitstable Swimming Pool for the fun-filled ‘Knockout!’. Historians and walkers will both enjoy A Trail of Talk with Tea, where celebrated local historian Geoffrey Pike will take you on an enjoyably informative walking tour of Whitstable, ending in a delicious cream tea in the Umbrella Centre Heritage Café. In the evening, historian, author and broadcaster Kathryn Ferry gives a fascinating insight into beach huts in her talk Sheds on the Seashore; local poets glorify local landmarks in Native Eyes – Poetry in Motion; the Ship Centurion hosts a Shanty Night with Dead Horse Morris and the Shipwright Shanty Crew; and laughter is on the programme at the Playhouse with Russell Kane and Markus Birdman. Lovers of classical music will relish Carmina Avium at the Methodist Church.

THURSDAY juxtaposes

heritage highlights with modern interests and pastimes. The Astrodome Space Hop at Whitstable Library - today only - explores the universe with an exciting state-of-the art planetarium and, at the other end of town, Urban Sports Collective explores skateboarding skills at the Coastal Skate Park. A more mature audience may like to take a Walk in Time with Brian Baker. Back in the centre, Grotters between the Groins is at Reeves Beach - so start collecting oyster shells now. This is followed by Blessing of the Waters at Sea Wall/Reeves Beach and Glowing Grotters from

dusk onwards. Early evening is time for more Sea Shanties at the Duke of Cumberland, with later hours reserved for music and comedy. Robin Ince and Joe Rowntree are at The Playhouse, Banana Thursday showcases emerging and unsigned bands at the Horsebridge, and jazz comes into town with the Tishomingo Jazz Band and their Festival Jazz Club at the Marine Hotel, and Emily Peasgood with Musique Femme at Deco 5.

FRIDAY means fun, so the last day of the Festival is all about joining in and having a good time. Outdoor events in the day include a Sea Shore Safari on the beach, a Victory Wood Walk with Canterbury Ramblers, and of course, hugely popular Crusty Crabs - the annual crab catching competition at the Horsebridge on Reeves Beach. This is the second and final day of Wishes & Lanterns & Masks & More, so make time to make your own festival mask or lantern for the Festival Finale. Friday is also your second chance to see Samba Pelo Mar in action and try your own hand at playing. More music is provided by The Mock Tudor Band who are giving a concert of Early Music gems at St Alphege Church; the Geoff Everett Band , who are playing rocking Blues and R&B at Deco 5, and the Duke of Cumberland has live music too. On the final night of OyOySter, you can see Richard Herring and Dan Antopolski and you’ll be spoilt for choice because the Horsebridge always has great comedy planned for Festival week. This year’s Festival finale will be at the Street below Tankerton Slopes. Bonfire of the Wishes is a fiery farewell, free to all. Festival programmes will be on sale from the beginning of July and throughout the Festival. A full listing of festival events will be published in the July issue of The Whitstable IMP. Stephen Hall Glass In an unassuming house in Whitstable, beautiful treasure sparkles on every wall. This is the house of artist Stephen Hall, who has been using glass as his main medium for the last few years.

I

n the back garden Stephen has his kiln in the shed by the back door, and studio gallery - a light, roomy cabin - made, himself, from two preexisting outbuildings. A small-ish room inside the house serves as Stephen’s alchemy lab. Here are shelves filled with reference material - pieces of glass he’s made or experimented with, reference books, magazines, colour cards. On a desk in the corner are jars and pots of powdered glass, colours and tinctures which help Stephen bring about the magical transformation from two pieces of flat glass with some colour, into a gorgeous, fluid fusion (literally) of light, glass, colour and texture. Stephen is a methodical man, into his DIY, and enjoys being stay-at-home dad to Poppy, seven, joking easily about his ‘to do’ list from partner, Annie, who sells new houses based in Ashford. You would never know he was an artist. There is nothing affected about him - in terms of appearance, manner or style. I’ve met Stephen on the school run many times and chatted away,

10

and it wasn’t until one of the teachers mentioned an exhibition that I realised there was a whole side to Stephen that no-one really sees on a dayto-day basis. From the street, even the house is unaffected - it has new decking and guttering (installed by Stephen himself - one of the things on his endless list) and is very neat and tidy - but when you step inside and see what is on the walls, it becomes more of an Aladdin’s cave of treasure, all made by Stephen, from this very house. Some of the pieces are in wooden frames, arranged in groups; others are sculptures - one is a piece of sea-green glass attached and partially embedded into what looks like a huge piece of driftwood, so heavy that we couldn’t move it to photograph. Other slim and insubstantial-looking sculptures stand surprisingly firmly on clear acrylic bases, and still other pieces adorn the walls, suspended in front of white backdrops or mirrors with the clear acrylic mounts which Stephen himself custom-designed to

theimp 10-11 Arts WHIT.indd 1

show his work at its best - with light all around and nothing about the support or backdrop detracting from the beautiful glass itself. “I always wanted to be a maker,” Stephen explains, “and knew from an early age some 30 years ago. I did a two-year foundation course in Bedfordshire where I was born, and three years on Ceramics in Derby.” Stephen established a craft business in an old baptist chapel in Streatley, Bedfordshire, before moving to Brighton, “inspired by the sea.” He bought a shop in Cowfold, not far from Brighton, and ran a craft business there. “But after several years and the birth of our daughter Poppy,” he explains, “my girlfriend and I outgrew Cowfold and headed south east to settle in Whitstable.” So how does he feel about that decision? “Whitstable is a great place for us to live and grow as a family. Poppy is at a great school, and I’ve been inspired and have gained knowledge in many processes and different media. I make kiln-fused glass between school runs! I love the sunset, sky and atmosphere here.” Stephen’s latest exhibitions have been in Canterbury, and ‘Whitstable 10’ in the Horsebridge plus the Artists’ Open House scheme. But what does the future hold? “I aim to return to combining ceramics with this shortly, so watch this space,” he hints. From flat plain pieces of glass and different powders and tinctures Stephen makes masterpieces which change as the light does. He has a workbook full of designs and titbits of information, clippings and

cuttings from the last few years which have inspired him - so there is most definitely more to come from this interesting artist. But Stephen is now feeling a familiar tug at his emotions - the pull towards clay and his potter’s wheel. I appreciate what he is saying about clay versus glass. For him, glass is a flat object. He can choose the colours and patterns but it is the kiln which performs the magic. With clay, it’s always threedimensional, tactile - the skill is all in his hands, the magic all comes from him - the kiln merely makes the shape permanent, without changing its basic form. I can see this - and I covet some of the pots almost as much as the glass. But I can’t see the glass as a flat thing. For me, it is magical - a brittle, unexciting substance made fluid and beautiful. It is much more planned and designed beforehand - and yes, the kiln does the ‘magic’ part. But the end result is far from flat - it’s a sparkling, undulating, light-capturing kaleidoscope of colour, texture and reflection. And I WILL own a piece. One day. Currently Stephen is working on development and commissioned pieces, and will be part of the Oyster Festival in July, helping any interested children to make clay figures (like the ones pictured here) in ‘Terracotta Are Me’ - see the full Oyster Festival programme in the July IMP for details.

Some of my earliest memories are of piano lessons in a strange old lady’s house, of listening to hand-me-down tapes and records, dismantling our television and borrowing the speaker from it to make my stereo louder, experimenting with recording to tape, and so on. I knew quite early on that when I grew up I wanted to be either an engineer, an electrician or a musician. Despite constant but gentle advice that my chances of earning a proper living from music were slim at best, I still held on to the hope that perhaps I would find a job I truly loved, which brought both satisfaction and an income, even if it wasn’t playing keyboard for Michael Jackson (which was my first major job aspiration). Towards the end of secondary school I was involved in a concert put on by the music department. When dress-rehearsals started, a company arrived with huge speakers, cables, racks of equipment and a giant mixing console. And it was at that moment that I realised that my dream career was to be a live sound engineer. Although college courses in live sound engineering were rare, there were plenty of studio engineering and music technology courses available which I was advised would put me on the right track. While I understood that my parents might have preferred me to take a more realistic route and get myself a trade, I also knew that I had to make the choice. And so I jumped in head-first. Since leaving school in 1997 I have spent four years at college, travelled the country playing keyboards in a show band, worked every job from chip shop spud-boy to

undertaker’s assistant, and gained valuable experience in the company of several fantastic live and studio sound engineers. Six years ago in Grimsby I began providing small sound and lighting systems to local bands, musicians and events and the business grew quickly - three years ago I joined forces with fellow engineer Matt Gidlow and expanded the business, now called AV Jam, with the help of local government organisation eFactor. In January this year I relocated to Whitstable to live with my girlfriend (local singer and musician Emily Peasgood), leaving Matt to run the northern branch of AV Jam whilst I begin AV Jam in the south. I am enjoying the challenge of starting a new business in a completely new geographic location and I am hopeful that my sound and lighting hire company will become successful, providing quality services locally and further afield. If you are a band or venue and you think you’d benefit from AV Jam’s services, Joe can be contacted on: joe@avjam.co.uk, 07762 898291 or on Facebook group AV Jam PA Hire.

A Good Read The Little Stranger – Sarah Waters The reviews on the jacket of Waters’ latest novel use words like ‘chilling’ and ‘haunting’, and for once this is no exaggeration. This is a truly memorable story, and one which will remain with you for a long time. Waters has moved further into the twentieth century – her previous novels having ranged from Victorian times to the Second World War – and here she writes of rural post-war Warwickshire. Her narrator, Faraday, a country doctor, finds himself called out to Hundreds Hall, seat of the Ayres family. Having visited the house as a child, he is shocked to find it decaying. He strikes up a friendship with the family: Mrs Ayres, struggling to cope with her change in status; her son Roderick, scarred in more ways than one by his wartime experiences, and her daughter Caroline, attempting to hold everything together. At first this reads like a tale of mourning for lost glamour. Soon however, events at Hundreds take a sinister and supernatural turn. Waters proves once again that she is a master storyteller, drawing us in and leading us first one way and then another until we are as caught up in the mystery as Faraday himself. This is a genuinely disturbing book. When the strange events begin to occur, they are simply told but terrifying, so much so that at one point I had to stop reading and turn on all the lights. (Erica Wagner, reviewing the book in The Times, reports much the same experience). I almost resolved not to finish the story, but found that the characters kept popping up in my head at the oddest moments. The pace and pitch is excellent - Waters keeps us moving forward, speeding up and then pausing for breath - and the ending is magnificently understated. Weeks later, you will find yourself running this story over in your mind, again and again. An absolute must read...if you dare.

BOOKS

Tim the Tiny Horse – Harry Hill

14

‘Tim the Tiny Horse was tiny but cheerful. Here he is playing with a 2p piece so you get the idea’. So begins this delightfully mad book by comedian Harry Hill, ideal for children aged from 8 to 80. The book is a collection of short stories featuring Tim, the horse whose stable is a matchbox, with an empty Tic Tac box for a conservatory. Each title gives a general clue to the content, but among the more ordinary ‘Tim gets the showbiz bug’, ‘Tim does some cooking’ and ‘Tim’s Christmas’ comes a flash of the surreal, such as ‘Tim has a brush with Anna Ford’. The text is kept to a minimum, and each page features two or three lines along with a drawing by Hill, which adds an extra dimension to the humour (Tim in a dressing gown answering the phone, for example). The humour will come as no surprise to those familiar with Hill’s TV and stand up work, but is easily accessible to the youngest reader. Be warned though, sometimes you may have to explain to your children why you are laughing so much at a picture of a tiny horse and a tube of toothpaste...and explaining that is not always straightforward!

A lit tle girl

named Stella... Stella Rogers was diagnosed with neuroblastoma when she was 17 months old. Now two, she could be considered one of the lucky children, despite all her suffering. he regime to clear her cancer (taking up a quarter of her short life) has been a long and truly brutal one, but so far she has fought her illness every step of the way and her parents have succeeded in taking her to the USA - where they are now - for lifesaving antibody treatment. Mum Allison Hyde, a former A&E nurse, her partner John Rogers and friends and family have all been desperately fundraising to raise the £250,000 needed to pay for the costly treatment, but despite incredible efforts they had raised only £40,000 of their total as the deadline for the start of treatment loomed. For antibody therapy to work, it is necessary for the patient to start it no more than 100 days after a stem cell transplant (part of the regime to clear the cancer). Luckily for Stella, the neuroblastoma charity, 2simpletrust, stepped in to help and provided an emergency, interest-free loan, and on Tuesday Februrary 2, just a week before the deadline arrived,

Fund-raising brunch held at Howfield Manor Hotel Photos courtesy of Samantha Jones

Stella and her family found themselves on their way to the USA to start Stella’s treatment at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Stella will be in the US for six months in total, and this update on Stella’s progress came from Allison just as we were going to print: ‘Stella has completed the third round of antibodies and apart from dropping her blood pressure on a couple of occasions she has done remarkably well. This therapy always causes fluid to build up in Stella’s tissues, so she looks puffy and swollen, but this goes away after a few days out of hospital. So here we are again recuperating at the Ronald McDonald House. ‘It is fantastic to see her thriving again as she recuperates. Stella is causing mischief with her sister [Zoe]. Running and laughing are all things that are wonderful to see. As she feels so much better her personality is starting to come out. She chatters away all the time and while she hasn’t developed an American accent she uses lots of American-isms! Little phrases like “Oh man!” (she has watched too much Dora the Explorer), “sure”, “trash can” and “diaper”. Zoe, on the other hand, delights in perfecting her accent as she plays at being an American princess, wearing huge sunglasses. The staff at the house have nicknamed her “Little Miss Hollywood”!’

And the fund-raising continues in their absence. The latest event was a ladies brunch in aid of Stella, organised by Catherine Lloyd at the Howfield Manor Hotel near Canterbury. Samantha Jones was there and kindly forwarded these pictures of the event to the IMP. Stella’s great aunt Shirley Ryan lives in Whitstable and by all accounts has been a very effective fundraiser indeed, and she will be at the Whitstable Umbrella Centre’s Fun Day on Tankerton Slopes, Sunday June 20, if you fancy turning out to show support. Red Watch at Whitstable Fire Station have also helped with fund-raising, as have Fiona Wilkinson and her father from the Whitstable Red Lions. But there is still a lot of money to raise, with events planned all over Kent. The family’s website www.forstella.org gives details of all the events that are going on, from skydiving, abseiling and marathon running, to singing and swimming, face-painting and cake-baking. donations have ranged from £2 to £10,000 and so many people have stepped forward to give their time. The youngest fundraiser is just four years old. Allison explains: “If lots of people gave just a little we can save our daughter, who has shown that she

has a true fighting spirit and so wants to live. We are so grateful to all the many people who have made such a big difference. If it wasn’t for their support it would have been difficult to get this far – and we have made it a very long way!” Antibody therapy is a revolutionary treatment, but has been available in the USA, Canada and Australia for some time, with proven results. With this therapy, antibodies are injected into the bloodstream and travel around the body, attaching to any neuroblastoma cells that they find. The body’s immune system can then identify the cancer cells and attack and kill them. For more information on neuroblastoma go to www.nsoc.co.uk For more information about Stella, to help with fund-raising or to donate, go to www.forstella.org Facebook group: For Stella Rogers as she fights neuroblastoma Christina Birkett

GET APE W

Left to right; Paul Morhen (Guitars) Colin Lovatt (Percussion) Andy Benn (Vocals) Paul Cuffley (Drums) Kev Morhen (Bass)

Get Ape was started by Paul Morhen and Andy Benn. Their unique, soulful sound developed as the other members became part of the band which has had the same line-up now for about two years. The band specialises in corporate events, weddings and often plays in high-profile restaurant chains like Pizza Express and exclusive hotels. Last year was a really good year for the band, especially in the spring and summer, with a high volume of festivals and weddings. And, according to the band, this year is set to be even better: “We are heavily booked for weddings and parties, as well as appearances at Music For Life at Margate Cricket Club and Theatre In The Park at Strode Park,” Colin explains.

MUSIC REVIEW

hen I was little, one of the things I found fascinating was the concept of a ‘monkey’s wedding’, translated from the Zulu ‘umshado wezinkaw’’. This occurred when it was both raining and the sun was shining. A perfect time for rainbows and magical stories. Often, once the monkey’s wedding had finished, the world felt sparkling clean and clear. The air seemed crisp and life would continue its course. In the world of mediocre music, it is equally refreshing when a band comes shining in, clearing away the audial mud and giving a clearer more hopeful picture of where music is going. Get Ape, a Kent-based collective, is made up of Paul Morhen (Guitars) from Ashford, Colin Lovatt (Percussion) from Whitstable, Andy Benn (Vocals) and Paul Cuffley (Drums) both from Maidstone and Kev Morhen (Bass) who hails from Reculver.

MUSIC REVIEW 22

Get Ape is a troupe of very experienced musicians who have had a colourful musical past making for a sound which is unique and inspiring. There is never a dull moment at one of their gigs. Colin suggests that Get Ape is doing something fresh and different from the usual run-of-the-mill party/function bands: “Get Ape has a fresh-sounding and modern repertoire... - one which covers artists such as Jamiroquai, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, JLS, Amy Winehouse and the Artic Monkeys. The sound is made up of grooving, hardhitting drumming; solid, rhythmic bass playing; big-sounding multi-percussio; a funky guitarist and a powerful, soulful singer. This five-piece band delivers a big, full sound which is guaranteed to get people on

the their feet. They aim to clear the dirt and shine the light on a musical future, which free from mediocrity. To put it simply, they are not just washing the windows at the house of mediocrity, they are smashing them out and ensuring that they add something to the wonderful world of music. Discover more about Get Ape on Twitter, Facebook, Myspace and on their own site: www.getape.co.uk Or hear them live at: Music 4 Life - Margate Cricket Club, Hartsdown Road, Margate, Saturday June 19, or Theatre In The Park - Strode Park, Herne, near Herne Bay Friday July 2. on Favreau has returned to the director’s chair for the sequel to his hugely popular screen adaptation of the Marvel comic ‘Iron Man’. With a stupidly big budget and a killer cast including Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle and Samuel L. Jackson, this picture SHOULD deliver all the goods to its masses of fans. But will it be able to? Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) has told the world of his dual identity and everyone wants a piece of the action. The press, the government and the Special Forces all want Tony to share his invention, the Iron Man suit, with the world and supply information about his ‘weapons’ with the US Military. Meanwhile, in Moscow, Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke), the son of Tony’s Father’s business partner is outraged by Stark’s behaviour and fame and constructs a suit that will destroy him. Now Tony must fight to protect the world and himself, as well as fight off the surge of attacks that swarm his life from the American media and law system. The thing that most people and critics have been saying about this picture is that it is not as good as the original. It’s true, the first film is a better Superhero picture; however, I feel that ‘Iron Man 2’ is a pretty good all-rounder feature. Filled with comedy and action, it’s definitely an easy-viewer that’s nice to sit back and enjoy. Fans of the Iron Man comic books will probably enjoy it less than other viewers simply because a lot of the movie isn’t about Stark being Iron Man it’s not really a Superhero film until the last 30 minutes to be honest. With regard to the story, it’s pretty non-existent. This film definitely joins the group of ‘Style over Substance’ movies. But this isn’t a complete criticism. It’s a fun and fast-paced film that washes over the audience comfortably. With plenty of CGI madness, tons of action and fights, and Scarlett Johansson being Scarlett Johansson, it’s fair to say this film isn’t intending to win Best Screenplay at the Academy Awards. It’s merely a cash-in movie to rack in horrific amounts of money at the box-office, and it will do, but I’m sure not many viewers will feel robbed. In fact, I think the majority will be massively pleased. The only major criticism of the picture I have is the performances. Downey Jr. is a brilliant actor and his role as Stark fits his self-indulgent persona perfectly but as for the rest of the cast, it’s like a cat fight for the spotlight. With talents clashing all over the place, the only supporting actors who deliver well are Sam Rockwell as the sinisterly annoying Justin Hammer and Johansson as the sexy but deadly Natalie Rushman. Apart from that, ‘Iron Man 2’ is a silly, trigger-happy tin fight that will entertain you hugely. It supports a brilliant soundtrack; it has witty moments and is a perfect Friday night film with your friends. We all know it’s dumb and over-the-top but, realistically, who cares?

my grandfather to stomach cancer and a close family friend’s diagnosis of Breast Cancer in 2009 inspired my Resolution. After a brainstorming session I came to the decision that everyone likes cake and a nice cup of tea/coffee (delete as applicable) and I began the fundraising process, along with creating my blog – www.vickisresolution.blogspot.com.” Five months on, St Alphege Church is all booked for a Coffee Morning on Saturday June 12, running from 9am till 12. Joy Lane Breastfeeding Peer Support Group was set up about a year ago, by three mothers; Rebecca Sellen, Maria Bilski and Jacqueline Daniels, who decided that Whitstable needed a place where breasfeeding mothers could meet and discuss their concerns, vent their frustrations, and share a lovely, hot cup of tea. Local midwife Ursula put them in touch with another amazing woman; Mary Bullivant, who helped to make it happen at the heartbeat (one of a few) of our community, Joy Lane Children’s Centre. Under the sensitive guidance of Tracey Cunningham, the group is made up of a wide selection of highly experienced people including NCT breastfeeding consultant Angela Sandey, breastfeeding peer supporters, and NHS-trained breastfeeding specialists. It is a free, drop-in session which runs every Monday from 12.15pm, even through the school holidays, unless the Children’s Centre is closed (eg Bank

holidays). Everyone is welcome: expectant, new, and experienced mums, and older children are welcome. The group will be holding a first year anniversary celebration, with lunch provided by the children’s centre as well as a reflexologist to look after the mums, on Monday June 21.

Greenhill Gymnastics Club secured a win for the South East as gymnasts Jessica Alvarez and Ellie Wyatt helped take gold at the British grade 7 gymnastics championships. Jessica and Ellie travelled to Birmingham on Sunday April 25 to compete against 13 regions from all over Great Britain. Ellie unfortunately sustained an injury before the event and had to allow the team reserve to continue the competition in her place, but despite her disappointment was there to support and encourage her team mates throughout the competition. Jessica performed amazingly and was the second-highest placed South East gymnast, and secured herself seventh place in Great Britain - out of 62 girls. You have to struggle for delight. You have to trouble yourself for pleasure. You have to endure a cold winter of worry, before the warmth of spring creeps over, and lights your eyes. You have to have laid with the bad, to appreciate the good. Happiness lies in making it through, in pulling yourself clear, and looking back at the view.

I visualised our home But I could not find you in it. I searched the recesses of my mind for a trace But you had already left. I dwelt upon the happy times Just for a second or two Then, realising you weren’t coming back I quietly closed the door to my soul And slid the bolt across.

ENTERTAINMENT

I

30

love a controversial film. I love the hysteria, the panic, the ways in which so many think we are ultimately corrupted by the images we absorb from the silver screen... and in 2010, nothing is more controversial than Matthew Vaughn’s ‘Kick-Ass’. Destroyed by the Daily Mail and butchered by mothers across the world, it seems many people are angry with this coming-of-age Superhero flick, and I’m going to tell you why that is, and why I think it is utter nonsense. The film follows Dave (British Actor Aaron Johnson); a teen that struggles to fit in with high school life. Like many other ‘geeks’, his interaction with girls is poor and his popularity is an all-time low. Obsessed by comic books, Dave wishes and wonders why nobody has attempted to be a real superhero before, so he takes the obligation upon himself and becomes ‘Kick-Ass’, a crime fighter in a green wetsuit. After ‘Kick-Ass’ is seen saving a man from a brutal beating, he is filmed and becomes an internet phenomenon. As his popularity increases and his hero status rises, three other ‘superheroes’ from New York, ‘Red Mist’ (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), ‘HitGirl’ (Chloe Mortez) and ‘Big Daddy’ (Nicolas Cage) take it on themselves to join Dave in the most ultimate and ultra-violent crime-fighting surge America has ever seen. If you haven’t already heard, the main problem the world has with the film is ‘Hit-Girl’. Chloe Mortez is 13 years old and has starred in various films and television shows, but in ‘Kick-Ass’, her character wears a skirt with knee-high socks and worst of all, says the ‘c-word’. I find it bewildering that we are still so sensitive to bad language; I can understand that she is a minor using an unpleasant word but, realistically, you forget she says it when watching because three seconds later she’s amputating a man’s legs and putting 10 rounds into his skull. And I don’t think her outfit’s particularly sexualised; it could have been much worse. I personally believe that ‘Hit-Girl’ is just a character and not another syringe in our already supposed ‘movie-infected’ bodies. I say, just lighten up a bit and enjoy the movie. But back to the review: I thought it was fantastic. Vaughn was brave and crazy enough to take this project on and he has created a masterpiece. Filled with overthe-top action sequences, more bullets and comic carnage than a Sylvester Stallone picture, and a wonderful cast, ‘Kick-Ass’ really is the daddy of the genre. Admittedly this film is for an adult audience and I’m quite surprised it only received a ‘15’ certificate but, nevertheless, this movie is a bold, stupid and mind-boggling two-hour romp. Supported by a killer soundtrack, some beautiful direction and gorgeous comicbook page editing effects, the picture feels alive and bursting with energy and consequently so does the audience. It’s a roller-coaster ride through the criminal underworld of New York where drug gangs rule and mafia bosses can ‘bump off’ whoever they please - so expect plenty of thrills, kills and uncountable spills. The bloodshed and murder rate in ‘Kick-Ass’ is ridiculous, but don’t fret, the majority of it is shown in a comedic fashion that will leave you shaking your head and giggling rather than repulsed. And, surprisingly also, the film has a decent heart. Its main narrative focus may be superheroes but the sub-texts and plots surrounding it can be quite engaging and endearing. ‘Kick-Ass’ is a courageous, quirky and utterly silly film with outstanding performances that’s just brilliant to watch and is essential viewing.

Food & Fresh Air The Perfect Combination

Summer is here, apparently, and when the weather’s sunny, it seems everybody wants to be outside. And on long summer days there’s nothing nicer than lunch ‘al fresco’ with friends or family. And the great thing about eating outdoors - even for those less-than-brilliant cooks among us, is that food really does seem to taste better in the fresh air.

material these days. All sorts of colours and designs are available by the metre quite cheaply - they cut it straight from the roll and there’s no hemming to be done.

You may not be Nigella in the kitchen but when people sit down outside at a table groaning with all the usual out-door fare in the garden on a sunny afternoon, you’re home and dry in the catering stakes before you’ve served a thing.

If space isn’t at a premium, you could place a big jug of flowers on the table as well as your candlesticks or tea lights in glasses.

Have some fun dressing the table before your friends arrive. Barbecues don’t normally sound glamourous, but it’s your garden - why not start a trend and add a touch of chic? Most people love a bit of glamour because it makes an occasion seem a more special. White tablecloths and candlesticks, which could seem a bit over-the-top indoors, look great in the garden. Gingham table cloths also suit the ‘al fresco’ mood, or you can buy pretty cloths in inexpensive, wipe-clean

It doesn’t matter how you set the table or how mismatched everything is, because outdoors it doesn’t matter - the more rustic the better. Some people do love to sit in the sun, but most prefer the option of a little shade, so if you have an umbrella, which can be moved around depending on the sun, so much the better. If you are expecting sun-sensitive friends or small children it’s always good to have a high-SPF sun cream on hand as well. For a summer lunch make sure there’s loads of ice available. Spritzers (white wine and soda or lemonade) over ice are very refreshing, as is Pimms or ‘pink fizz’. One great tip is to find a few tin buckets or a big container and fill them with ice. It’s a stylish way to store bottles of wine, beers or soft drinks.

And the other lovely thing about eating outdoors is the way that the afternoon stretches effortlessly into the evening. As the light fades, try floating little candles in bowls or jars of water. Or, if you know you’ll definitely be carrying on into the evening, you could even plan ahead and string some fairy lights around the place. No-one will ever want to leave. Unless, of course, you forget your citronella candles to keep the bugs at bay...

FOOD & DRINK

And if you’re not having a barbecue (or if you ARE having a barbecue and you just like to cover all your bases as well) you can lay on simple but delicious food like jacket potatoes, salad, crusty bread, quiche, cheese, olives and cold cuts. People will think you’re a culinary genius and all you’ve done is assemble a few things and take them outside. It’s not cheating really...
