The Mount Washington Cog Railway is one of the world’s great rail adventures, and an exhilarating journey through history, technology, and nature. This first-in-theworld mountain climbing cog railway has been making its dramatic 3-hour round trip to the summit of the highest peak in the Northeast (6288') since 1869. The Cog is a year-round attraction, with daily 1-hour round trip excursions to our newly expanded Waumbek Station all winter long! In the Western White Mountains, the natural splendor of New Hampshire is on full display. Mixed coniferous and deciduous forests, lush with color in the fall, beckon visitors from around the world, while a variety of manmade attractions, outdoor adventures, scenic drives, and train rides pay homage to the region’s rich history of tourism.
Prior to serving as the gateway to adventure, the western White Mountains was a hub for the logging industry. At its height in the 1800’s and early 1900’s, as many as 19 logging railroads were in operation throughout the region. With the advent of the Weeks Act in 1911 and the subsequent creation of White Mountain National Forest in 1918, a recreation paradise was born.
Today, visitors can enjoy the grandeur of the White Mountains in many ways. For a stunning drive, head east across the Kancamagus Highway, a 34.5-mile scenic stretch that connects Lincoln to Conway. Did you know the “Kanc” is the Northeast’s first National Scenic Byway?
If you feel like heading west, drive up over Kinsman Notch. This is the westernmost of the major notches in NH, and features everything from Beaver Cascades and Beaver Pond to the endlessly explorable Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves.
Other regional highlights include the Walter Newton Natural Area in Plymouth. This 1.2-mile loop trail features a cellar hole, a bog, and Rainbow Falls. The falls are most stunning after a period of rain or snow melt. The J.E. Henry Trail is a 3.2-mile out and back path in Lincoln that runs alongside the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River.
We like to think of this charming trio of towns as the covered bridge capital of New England. Travel alongside the Wild Ammonoosuc River as you make your way to Woodsville, Bath, and North Haverhill. Three lovely covered bridges await!

If you’re after a different kind of outdoor adventure, consider biking several different routes (such as PRKR Mtn Trails, the Cross New Hampshire Adventure Trail, and the Franconia Notch Bike Path) or paddling in a canoe or kayak (at spots like Echo Lake, Moore Reservoir, and the Androscoggin River).
For the arts and culture buff, the towns of Bethlehem, Littleton, and Whitefield offer historic theatres with comedy nights, theatrical productions, and classic movies. Grab dinner and a beer before the show at one of Bethlehem or Littleton’s unique restaurants and breweries.
Known as the “newest” town in New Hampshire, Sugar Hill was incorporated in 1962. Its namesake sugar maples, as well as its unparalleled views of the Franconia Range, have drawn notable past residents like actress Bette Davis and novelist Earnest Poole.
Sugar Hill is a quintessential New England village hailed for its spectacular pink and purple lupine flowers that bloom every June.
A quick note on lupine etiquette: be respectful of all posted signage, and do not trespass on private property. Avoid stepping on the blooms where walking is allowed, and no matter how tempting, please refrain from cutting any flowers to take home. Instead, leave the beautiful lupine for all to enjoy!

Franconia sits on a rich iron deposit, and the region once produced pig iron and bar iron for farm tools and cast-iron ware. It is home to the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway and was once home to Franconia College during the 1960s and 1970s.
Franconia is the place to embrace the joie de vivre of the great outdoors. While you’re in town, stop by the Besaw Iron Furnace, an octagonal stone stack visible on the far side of the Gale River. It was built with local granite and is all that remains of a 200-year-old iron smelter.
The Frost Place is the former home of poet Robert Frost and is now a museum of literary history that includes memorabilia, writing workshops, and signed editions of his work plus a ½ mile poetry trail. Open from May to October. Learn more at frostplace.org

Set amid the farms and forests of northern New Hampshire, Jefferson is home to the oldest 18-hole golf course in the state, a Christmas theme park that has been family-owned and operated for over 70 years, and endless miles of trails and panoramic views of the Presidential Range. Lancaster started as an 18th century mill town and today is a rural village with a boutique Main Street, 4-season outdoor recreation, and a 420-acre state park.
Head to the top of the stone fire tower on Mount Prospect in Weeks State Park for a 360-degree view of the Northern White Mountains. The John Wingate Weeks House Museum is open to the public and there are many trails to explore the 446-acre property.
Everyone wants to see a moose! One of the questions we get asked the most here in the White Mountains is, “where can I see a moose?” While it’s not an exact science, the best time to catch a glimpse of these majestic giants is dusk and dawn, and your chances of seeing one are even higher if you make the drive to Routes 3N, 115, and 2.
If you’re after a guaranteed animal sighting, visit Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge. The ponds, wetlands and forests of this refuge support a wide variety of flora and fauna (including many species of birds). Hike or bring your bike—a section of the Presidential Rail Trail (which is also part of the Cross New Hampshire Adventure Trail) meanders right through the very best views at Pondicherry.
Weeks State Park
On the summit of Mt. Prospect in Lancaster is the summer estate of John Wingate Weeks, the U.S. Congressman who led the charge to establish the Weeks Act of 1911 to create our National Forest system. Berlin, located along the Androscoggin River, and known as the “City that Trees Built” was once the center of the papermaking industry. Today, Berlin offers visitors a chance to experience the outdoors by various means, including foot, pedal power, ATV, snowmobile, raft, guided moose tour, and more.
Where Routes 2 and 16 meet is Gorham. When the Atlantic and St. Lawrence Railroad arrived in the 1850s, the town became a tourist destination and it remains so today.
At Jericho Mountain Park ATV, UTV, and snowmobile enthusiasts alike will enjoy miles of trails and scenic outlooks.
Head a little further south along Route 16 and you’ll find yourself traveling through Pinkham Notch, a mountain pass that separates the Presidential Range from the Wildcat Range to the east. Many hikers choose to start their ascent of Mount Washington from Pinkham Notch, while adventurous, experienced skiers test their skills in Tuckerman Ravine, and those on the hunt for a scenic waterfall make the short trek to Glen Ellis Falls.

In addition to being home to the magnificent moose, the Great North Woods is also home to Dixville Notch, the tiny town that is first in the nation to cast its votes during the U.S. presidential election. Driving through the notch, take note of the historic Balsams Resort. This is one of the few remaining grand hotels in the region, and while it is shuttered for the time being, its iconic red roofed structure is perfect for a few quick roadside photos on the shores of Lake Gloriette. Beaver Falls is another easily accessible stop for photos, while a hike up to Table Rock yields impressive valley views.

The Mount Washington Valley, or simply “The Valley” as it is locally known, is a four-season outdoor recreationist’s playground. While the vast mountain landscape drew artists and city-dwellers here in the 1800’s, it continues to draw visitors from all over the world for skiing, shopping, rock climbing, hiking, and photo-taking.
Along with the incredible mountain backdrops, the Valley is also home to pristine lakes for paddling, winding rivers for tubing and wildlife watching, and beautiful waterfalls. What about covered bridges? Local highlights include the Albany Covered Bridge (an oft-photographed stop on the eastern end of the Kancamagus Highway), and the Swift River Covered Bridge (open to pedestrians only).
Notable natural amenities include Whitaker Woods, a peaceful 4-season trail system owned by the town of Conway, and Echo Lake State Park, a perfect spot for swimming and admiring the rocky views of nearby Cathedral Ledge.

Along the eastern edge of New Hampshire, placed cozily between the Lakes Region and the White Mountains, is the historic town of Tamworth. This enclave, founded in 1766, encompasses the villages of Chocorua, Tamworth, South Tamworth, Whittier, and Wonalancet. Won’t you join us for a ride?
The Tamworth area is laced with rich history along every mile of the winding roads. Take your time traveling past stones walls, old churches, and pretty farmland; along the way, you just might spot the historic marker in Wonalancet detailing the origins of the hardy Chinook sled dog (New Hampshire’s state dog).
Did you know Grover Cleveland, America’s 22nd and 24th president, held a summer home on Cleveland Hill Road?
It’s little wonder why so many are still drawn to this part of the White Mountains. All one needs to do is take a look at the commanding view of Lake Chocorua and Mount Chocorua, right off Route 16. This is one of the most photographed spots in America! Pull over, grab your camera, and take a stroll along the wooden bridge to capture your own likeness.

The Memorial Arch of Tilton was built in 1882 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The White Mountains region has a long and rich history, and we celebrate each of the unique historical characters, milestone events, and major “firsts” that have contributed to making the White Mountains the special place that it is today.
Pre-colonization: Several Native American tribes–including the Abenaki, Penacook, and Wabanaki–made the White Mountains their home. Many geological features still bear Native names including the Pemigewasset River, the Kancamagus Highway, and Mount Chocorua.
Late 1700’s: The Crawford family settled in what is now known as Crawford Notch. They provided food and accommodations for early travelers, and created roads, turnpikes, and the Crawford Path (the oldest continuously maintained hiking trail in the United States).
Mid 1800’s: The White Mountain School of Painters began traveling to the area, inspired by the beauty of the region. Thomas Cole arrived in 1827, followed by Benjamin Champney, David Johnson, and Mary Safford.
Logging barons, such as J.E. Henry, logged much of the White Mountains and built mill towns and railroads to accommodate the logging operations. In Lincoln, there is still evidence of the old mill.
Railroads were not just for logging anymore. Rail travel for tourists from Boston and Concord, NH made it easy for city folk to visit the White Mountains.
1861: The Mt. Washington Auto Road opened as a carriage road. In 1912, it formally switched from horses to motors. Today, it is America’s Oldest Man-Made Attraction, hosting more than 45,000 vehicles annually.
1869: The world’s first mountain climbing cog railway, the Mount Washington Cog Railway, was built.
Late 1800’s-Early 1900’s: At the height of their popularity, there were 30 or so “Grand Hotels” in the White Mountains. Today, four remain: the Omni Mount Washington Hotel, the Eagle Mountain House, the Mountain View Grand, and the Wentworth.
1911: Congressman John W. Weeks introduced a bill that was signed into law by President Taft. The Weeks Act authorized the federal government to purchase land to be protected and preserved as national forest territory. Under this law, the White Mountain National Forest was formed and nearly 800,000 acres have been preserved.
1938: The Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway is the first passenger aerial tramway in North America, carrying passengers to Cannon’s 4,080’ summit.
1959: The Kancamagus Highway got its start in the 1800’s as two unconnected dirt roads and was opened to through traffic in 1959. The Kanc was paved in 1964, opened for winter traffic in 1968, and designated a National Scenic Byway in 1996.
2003: On May 3, Franconia Notch’s iconic Old Man of the Mountain crumbled. Today, visitors can glimpse the former profile at the Profile Plaza and Historic Site.

Remember to purchase your $5 parking pass at your first stop on the Kanc; most parking area have a self-service, cash-only fee station on site.

Ready for your road trip photo op? Swing by the National Forest log cabin at the start of the trail to say hi to a ranger, and strike a pose at the suspension footbridge spanning the Pemigewasset River.
The Pemigewasset Overlook is one of 5 overlooks found along the Kancamagus Highway (the Kanc). We recommend stopping at each one, but this is a particularly pretty view at all hours if you’re pressed for time.
Up next, a classic: Sabbaday Falls. This gently graded, 0.7-mile out and back trail ends at a 35' multi plunge waterfall with lower and upper viewing points.
Rocky Gorge Scenic Area
Another easily walkable waterfall is always worth the stop in our book! Rocky Gorge is known for its powerful 10’ waterfall drop, distinctive rocky sides, and foot bridge that crosses the Swift River. Albany Covered Bridge
This 1858 bridge is closed to vehicles during the winter months, but foot traffic is always welcome. Make your way down to the river’s edge for one of the most beautiful, photogenic views.
Russell-Colbath Historic Site
This 1832 structure is the last original building in the town of Passaconaway. Within its grounds, you will find a historic graveyard, timber frame barn, and half-mile ADA interpretive Rail N’ River trail. The interior of the Rusell-Colbath house is open on weekends Memorial Day through Columbus Day.
Saco Ranger Station
End (or start!) your trip across the Kanc at the Saco Ranger Station. Pick up a souvenir, map, or guidebook, purchase recreation passes after perusing interpretive displays, and plan for adventures ahead.

Be sure to wear proper footwear—not leather-soled shoes (they can be slippery). And be especially careful when traversing the wet rocks around the falls.
Covered bridges and waterfalls dot the White Mountains landscape and are favorites with visitors and locals alike. There are more than 100 waterfalls in the area and plenty of covered bridges, too—enough to satisfy the most devoted falls or covered bridge spotter. This trail near Thornton travels through mixed forest to a lovely pond with a stunning mountain backdrop. It’s perfect for any time of year!
Mount Cardigan

Though not technically in the White Mountains, this is a classic New Hampshire hike not to be missed. The easiest route is up the West Ridge Trail; expansive views and an alpine feel wait at the bald summit.
The Scaur (Waterville Valley)
Moderate n 4.2 miles (out & back)
This shorter hike begins at the Livermore Road trails and branches off through the forest to a small rocky scramble with beautiful, rewarding views of the valley and Mount Tecumseh.

Take the Kinsman Ridge Trail up Cannon Mountain for a short, steep hike that gets you above treeline quickly. Enjoy several great view points along the trail (including looking down at Lonesome Lake), as well as the tower at the summit which offers unparalleled views of Franconia Ridge. There is ample parking at the base of Cannon Mountain, so use half the day for your hike, and finish off with a swim in Echo Lake!
This rugged hike covers 3,400’ feet of elevation gain. At the summit, Carrigain offers 360-degree views from an old fire observation tower. It is a great hike for people who want to push themselves in the White Mountains and be rewarded with stunning views of the Presidential Range and Pemigewasset Wilderness.

This is a wonderful first 4,000-footer. It is 5.9-miles out and back, and has a steady elevation gain of 2,398' from trailhead to summit. This hike is considered hard, but the beautiful views are well worth the effort!

The peak of Mount Washington was first seen by European explorers from the Atlantic Ocean in 1524.
Known to Native Americans as Agiocochook , the summit was believed to be the home of the Great Spirit.
Today, by foot, car or train, the 6,288' summit of Mount Washington is surprisingly accessible. Home to Mount Washington State Park, it is visited by more than 250,000 people each year from all over the world, who come to revel in the top-of-the-world views of New England, New York, Canada, and on a clear day, even the Atlantic Ocean!
The first footpath to the summit was carved out by Ethan Allen Crawford in 1819; today
the Crawford Path is the oldest continually maintained footpath in the country. Visitors can drive up the Mt. Washington Auto Road or simply leave the driving to the cheerful (and informative) stage coach guides.
The Mount Washington Cog Railway, the world’s first mountain climbing railroad, opened in 1869.
Mount Washington is the highest peak in the Northeast and its weather is variable year-round. The record high temperature is 72°F; the record low, -47°F. Without factoring in the wind chill!
With an average July temperature of 54°F, summer visitors can get a respite from warmer temperatures in the valleys below. When you come, plan to bring a jacket and sturdy shoes. And don’t forget your camera!
“White Mountain National Forest: Land of Many Uses” read the signs that greet you. The National Forest is a managed and multiple-use forest that provides areas for both recreation and human enjoyment, as well as wildlife habitat and harvesting of the forest, a renewable resource.

The White Mountain National Forest is one of the most heavily used National Forests in the country. With that use comes a large workload to maintain the recreation facilities. As a result, a program is in place to collect fees for recreational use.
All unattended vehicles parked on National Forest land must display a Recreation Pass where signed. Pass options include a $5 day pass available onsite, a $30 single or $40 household annual pass for those who use the Forest year-round. Recreation Passes are available at area businesses, USFS Information Centers, and the White Mountains Visitors Center. For those holding the America the Beautiful Pass, Access Pass, and Senior Pass, parking is free. Note: prices are subject to change. Visit Mid-Week If your schedule allows, plan a visit mid-week; you may find that you have an overlook, trail, or roadway mostly to yourself.
Take the Roads Less Travelled To avoid the congestion that sometimes happens along busier routes, consider one of our “roads less traveled” for a more enjoyable autumn foliage experience. Head down a side road such as Rte. 112 West through Kinsman Notch, Rte. 118 in Warren, Rte. 113 in Sandwich, or Rte. 2 in Randolph and Jefferson. All are stunning at this time of year—and have less traffic!
Pack Your Patience Take a deep breath and enjoy our fresh mountain air and the scent of crisp fall leaves. Enjoy the fact that you’re in the White Mountains and soak in the beauty around you. Staffing shortages exist, and some businesses may have modified operating hours. Pack your patience along with your toothbrush and camera!
Be Safe and Respectful When visiting the White Mountains, please be mindful of your surroundings. Stay on the trail and leave only footprints when taking a hike. If you carry something into a park or attraction, be sure to carry it out. Familiarize yourself with the rules when it comes to camping and ask questions if you don’t know the answers. Be careful around water and on steep ledges—no Instagram post is worth hurting the environment or yourself. Respect the beauty of nature that surrounds you, as well as the staff at your favorite restaurants, breweries, hotels, and attractions.

SANTA’S VILLAGE MT. WASHINGTON AUTO ROAD
With hundreds of miles of trails and some of the most beautiful winter terrain to explore, a snowmobile trip in the White Mountains is a day you won’t soon forget. Rent a snowmobile or join an outfitter for a guided hourly, half-day, or full-day tour. Trails along Corridors 11 and 19 connect the Lincoln-Woodstock area with points north and east like Twin Mountain, Gorham and Conway.

There are several outfitters throughout the White Mountains that offer rentals as well as many kilometers of groomed and ungroomed trails for all ages to explore. Not a skier but still want to play outside? We’ve got you covered! There are countless ways to enjoy a crisp winter day in the White Mountains. Experience the charm and romance of a horse-drawn sleigh ride or get the thrill of a lifetime on a dog-sled adventure. Soar down a snow-covered hill on a snow tube, or lace up a pair of skates and twirl on the ice on an outdoor rink.
Sometimes the weather just doesn’t cooperate, or maybe you’ve had your fill of fresh air and want to enjoy some of the fun, indoor activities the White Mountains has to offer. Visit a museum or New Hampshire’s only aquarium! Enjoy a concert, classic film, or comedy show at one of our historic theaters. There are many local art galleries to explore and you may even have time to book a spa day while you’re visiting.
Tour and taste some of our local wines, brews, ciders or spirits or stop by a traditional general store for local jams, cheeses, honey, and other tasty treats. If you’re visiting in March, stop by a local sugar shack to see how maple syrup is tapped and boiled, then try some maple sugar on snow before grabbing this yummy taste of the Whites to bring home!
There are so many great winter-themed events to check out throughout the season! There’s an entire festival devoted to all things chocolate, and also one to the art of snow-sculpting. Visit a dazzling and enchanted castle made entirely out of ice and sparking LED-lights, or enjoy seasonal fireworks displays, tree lightings, and parades with Santa as the special guest.
A winter walk in the White Mountains can reward you with spectacular views and transport you to a winter wonderland. It’s important to know what equipment, gear, and clothing to bring with you on a winter hike and to keep a constant eye on the ever-changing weather. The Dells n Littleton
Located close to dining and shopping in downtown Littleton, this beautiful 1.3-mile out and back natural area is a great spot for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or for a gentle winter walk. Parking is available on Route 18 and at the second entrance on Dells Road.
Quincy Bog n Rumney
The 1-mile loop trail at the Quincy Bog Natural Area in Rumney is part of a 43-acre conservation area that is maintained by the Pemi Baker Land Trust. Pristine boardwalks, a suspension bridge, informative signage, and winter wildlife offer a little bit of everything for those looking for a less challenging option or for those with kids.
Smarts Brook n Thornton
This popular trail on Route 49 in Thornton is great for winter hikers and snowshoers alike. Several loop trails offer a beautiful walk in the woods; along the way you might encounter foot bridges, stunning ice formations, a brook, and even a couple of small waterfalls.
Spring in the White Mountains – what is it like? We have our fair share of blooming flowers and sunny strolls, but our neck of the woods also has another name for this time of year: mud season. Expect snow, mud, and all types of weather if you visit this time of year, mid-March to mid-June, plus far fewer crowds and plenty of fun to be found!
To make the most of your trip, pack sensibly and plan ahead.
Bring plenty of layers and sturdy waterproof shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty, and call around before you hop in the car to make sure your preferred restaurants, shops, and activities will be open during your visit (as many small businesses use this quiet time of year to prep for the White Mountains' busiest season).
Planning a hike? Keep in mind that winter at higher elevations can last all the way from September through May. Pack accordingly, and only hike when it is safe and smart to do so. Page 107.

Explore a picturesque pond, ancient pine trees, and several trails when you visit Bretzfelder Park. Located off of Prospect St., this 77-acre property (managed by the Forest Society North at the Rocks) is not just a great place to take a walk, but also a spot to enjoy educational presentations throughout the year.
The White Mountains region is home to nearly half the historic covered bridges in New Hampshire. The Durgin Bridge, now in its 4th iteration since 1820, is slightly off the beaten path but well worth the drive. The Thompson Wildlife Sanctuary is 5 minutes from the bridge. Here you can enjoy 2.3 miles of trails, views of the Sandwich Range and Ossipee Mountains from the marshland boardwalk, and the chance to see over 200 varieties of bird, amphibians, and mammals.
With over 3 miles of varied terrain, this 178-acre trail system and historic property is maintained by the Meredith Parks and Recreation Department. Explore fields, forested hillsides, and the town’s original water reservoir. You can pick up a helpful brochure at the trailhead or on the town’s website (meredithnh.org) to better guide your wandering.
This scenic trail in Waterville Valley is an easy, 3-mile out and back trail that features several waterfalls. Park your car at the Snow’s Mountain Parking Lot and begin your ascent up a grassy hill and into the woods. The trail crosses over an old ski trail, cross country ski trails, and several footbridges before reaching the first set of falls. This is a great spot for a quick swim on a hot, summer day.
