As another year comes to a close I think it is safe to say that this year has been a stand out for the game.
The Ryder Cup victory over the USA is up there as one of the greatest victories for Europe in the competition. This was made even more remarkable due to the fact that the Europeans won despite an aggressive and partisan support for the USA.
For the regular golfer the year has been fantastic for societies and club golfers alike. The long hot Summer offered excellent conditions for many clubs across the UK to showcase the fantastic array of courses and facilities that Britain has to offer. We can only hope that 2026 will be the same.
As always this edition brings a full and comprehensive insight into some of the best venues for either golf breaks or society away days for the coming year.
We hope that you find the content useful in securing your next golfing venture.
Wishing all of our readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Royal Ascot Golf Club Scoops First Major Award Following Significant Investment
One of Berkshire’s oldest golf clubs has been recognised for providing the best playing experience in the south-east following the completion of its major course regeneration.
Royal Ascot Golf Club scooped the Best Golfing Experience in the South East category at the Southern Enterprise Awards after it invested £500,000 to upgrade each of its 18 holes and cut the ribbon on its new look clubhouse.
The accolade recognises the course’s 364 day a year playability, its immaculate greens and fairways and through the door clubhouse experience for members and guests alike.
Improvements which helped the club achieve its first award include enhanced drainage and irrigation provisions on all 18 holes, bunker renovations and the planting of new treelines to the course’s surrounds.
A new 200-square-metre outdoor social and dining area providing panoramic views of the course has also been constructed with catering delivered by the club’s dedicated hospitality team seven days each week.
Stephen Nicholson, General Manager at Royal Ascot Golf Club, said: “This award represents a collective ambition from the entire team to establish our club as one of the UK’s leading golf venues.
“We’ve invested substantial funds to provide the best possible playing experience for visitors and are thrilled to be recognised following the completion of major works.
“Everyone associated to the club is a golf enthusiast, and we are committed to enhancing the profile of our sport locally by taking onboard feedback, delivering tangible change and making golf accessible to people of all ages and skillsets.
“On a personal note, I must thank everyone at the club who has contributed to this award for their hard work and continued support – we can all be proud of what has been achieved.”
The club has also been boosted by news that it has been shortlisted for three major industry awards, including Golf Club of the Year and Community Club of the Year at the Club Awards in Leicester this month hosted by broadcaster John Inverdale.
The club has also been confirmed as a finalist in next month’s Golf Course Awards in the Members’ Club of the Year category.
Stephen added: “We’ve established the foundations we set out to achieve as a team when developing a fresh strategy for the club several years ago which prioritised experience, quality, footfall and community.
“It’s been a breakthrough year for all parts of our operation and we hope to end it on a real high at the Club Awards and Golf Course Awards where we wish all other finalists the best of luck.”
Founded in 1887, Royal Ascot Golf Club was granted Royal status by Queen Victoria and is set in 150 acres of the splendid woodland of Windsor Great Park, off Winkfield Road and adjacent to the world-famous racecourse.

An Abbey-Solutely Tee-Rific Way To Help Support Dogs
Golfers got to meet their club’s labrador-able namesake after raising thousands of pounds for the training of specialist assistance dogs.
Abbeydale Golf Club raised more than £20,000 after hosting a number of fundraising events for Sheffieldbased national charity, Support Dogs, which trains and provides assistance dogs to support autistic children, as well as adults affected by epilepsy or physical disability.
The events included a hog roast, golf competition, raffle, auctions, social evenings featuring gin-tasting and a big “Am-Am” amateur-amateur tournament with 25 teams.
The club, which was founded in 1895 and has 550 members in the men’s section, 110 women and 60 child golfers, was rewarded for its epic fundraising efforts by having a trainee support dog – yellow Lab Abbey – named in its honour.
Andy Daykin, 2023-2024 men’s captain, Nikki Bishop, 2023-2024 ladies’ captain and Steve Silverwood from club sponsors ECA Business Energy met the pup and also had an exclusive tour of Support Dogs’ new headquarters at Elsworth House, on Herries Road South in Hillsborough.
Andy said: “Abbeydale is a thriving and progressive golf club. Nikki and I are both delighted that we were able to raise sufficient funds during our Captaincy to sponsor a support dog, with much of the thanks going to the help of our members. We were delighted to meet Abbey and will follow her progress as an assistance dog with interest.”
He added: “We are really impressed with Support Dogs’ new centre – it’s going to be amazing. Support Dogs is one of the charities that is under-supported and we are delighted to have been able to help. If other golf clubs followed suit, it would really help the charity to thrive.”
Nikki said: “We were thrilled to meet Abbey – she’s beautiful. The new centre is going to be absolutely breath-taking. It’s only been since our captaincy that I’ve come to discover more about what this fantastic charity does to help people affected by autism, epilepsy and disability.
“The new centre opens up such potential to expand.”
Steve said: “ECA Business Energy were proud to be sponsors of Abbeydale Golf Club’s Captain’s Charity Day, helping to raise an incredible £20,000 in support of Support Dogs.
“This fantastic charity provides life-changing assistance dogs for people with autism, epilepsy, and physical disabilities, and we’re delighted to have played a part in supporting their vital work."
Tess Thompson, community fundraising manager at Support Dogs, thanked Abbeydale Golf Club members for their generosity.
She said: “We can’t thank the golfers enough for their efforts and we are delighted that Abbey serves as a testament to their hard work.
“Our charity receives no government funding and the support of golf clubs like Abbeydale is crucial to our success in helping vulnerable people to live more independently. We would welcome any other golf clubs to get in touch.”

Chirp Protect Launches Next-Generation
Security Solution for Golf Shops Amid
Record-Breaking Retail Theft
Retail theft across the UK is escalating at a pace never seen before. Shoplifting offences rose by 20 percent year on year according to the latest ONS figures, with more than 516,000 incidents formally recorded. The British Retail Consortium warns the real number is likely to exceed 20 million theft events annually.
This surge is hitting every retail sector and golf shops are now firmly in the spotlight. High-value products such as clubs, bags, apparel and accessories make pro shops a prime target for opportunistic and organised theft. Retailers are reporting a significant increase in attempts over the last 12 months, placing pressure on margins and exposing staff to risky confrontations, time-consuming investigations and the ongoing burden of reviewing CCTV and stock discrepancies.
Chirp Protect, one of the UK’s fastest growing retail security innovators, is seeing rapid adoption of its next-generation digital self alarming tagging solution across the golf retail sector. The technology has become a strong fit for high-theft golf merchandise, giving retailers a smarter, tamper proof and magnet proof alternative to traditional EAS systems.
Traditional magnetic tags can be bypassed in seconds. Chirp Protect’s technology cannot. Any interference triggers a loud on-product alarm, and if the item is taken too close to the exit, the tag instantly alerts. If a thief tries to leave the store, the alarm continues outside, encouraging product abandonment and reducing wrongful accusations.
The technology gives golf retailers an intelligent targeted tagging strategy for their highest-risk lines without needing to overhaul their existing systems. Chirp Protect tags can run alongside conventional EAS for high-turnover products, creating a layered approach that thieves cannot bypass.
At the core of the Chirp system is a discreet 14 cm hub that requires only a standard plug socket. It is easy to install and does not disrupt store layout, and it can integrate with CCTV or staff headset systems. This allows teams to receive instant alerts while automatically time stamping theft attempts and saving hours of manual video review.
Golf Retailers Adopt the Technology
Ferndown Forest Golf Club is one of the earliest adopters of Chirp Protect in the golf retail sector. Their success with the system has already led to installations across three more of the group’s courses.
Craig Gale of Ferndown Forest said:
“What an incredible system. We’ve tagged our golf clubs, clothing and bags and we feel safer already. Unfortunately, we’ve seen a massive spike in theft over the last 9 months and we are not alone. It was time to take action. We’re so impressed we’ve ordered for another three golf courses and we’re installing it ourselves because the process is so easy. Honestly, we’re all blown away.”
Chirp Protect has already seen strong adoption across convenience retail, garden centres, forecourts and supermarkets as well as fast international growth across Europe, North America and Australia. Expanding into golf retail is a natural step in its mission to deliver modern intelligent security tools that give retailers control, confidence and peace of mind.
Alex Ledsham, Chief Commercial Officer at Chirp Protect, said:
“As a golf lover myself, it’s sad to see the industry impacted by theft. Our system gives golf shops a discreet solution that does not interfere with customer experience but delivers instant awareness when theft is attempted. You do not need eyes in the back of your head to know what is happening and there is zero chance of wrongful accusation. We are excited to support golf shops with technology thieves simply cannot bypass.”
With theft at record levels, margins under pressure and staff time increasingly stretched, Chirp Protect is offering golf retailers an easy to adopt, highly effective and genuinely next-generation solution.

About Orchardleigh Golf Course & Country Club
Orchardleigh Golf Course and Country Club is home to an 18-hole course set within the scenic landscape of the Orchardleigh Estate, just outside the picturesque town of Frome in Somerset. The course is widely recognised for its immaculate greens, which are consistently maintained to a high standard, ensuring an enjoyable and rewarding round for golfers of all abilities.
The layout of the course reflects careful planning, with each hole thoughtfully designed to present a balanced level of challenge for both experienced low-handicap players and those newer to the game. This approach makes the course accessible yet rewarding, offering a satisfying test of skill regardless of handicap. The course itself is the work of Ryder Cup captain Brian Huggett, whose expertise is evident in the quality and character of the design.
Clubhouse and Facilities
The clubhouse offers a welcoming environment with facilities maintained to a high standard. The 19th hole bar provides a relaxing atmosphere, making it the perfect spot to unwind after a challenging round on the 18th. Guests can choose between patio seating or indoor dining, ideal for those who wish to enjoy more than just a drink after their game.
Accommodation and Events
A short stroll from the course leads to a selection of well-kept and comfortable holiday cottages, available for hire by golfing groups. These cottages also serve as an excellent option for wedding celebrations, providing convenient and attractive accommodation close to all the amenities of the club.
Hole 1 – PAR 4
The opening hole at Orchardleigh Golf Course is a Par 4 that presents a gentle yet engaging start to the round. The fairway, while generally open, is interspersed with several trees that require accuracy off the tee. Players are advised to avoid hitting right from the tee box, as this could compromise their view of the green when approaching for their next shot. On the left side, out of bounds is present, but it should not pose a significant threat to most golfers if they play sensibly. The green itself is well protected by two large bunkers, demanding a precise approach to avoid trouble and give yourself the best opportunity for a good score.
Hole 2 – PAR 5
This par 5 hole features multiple fairway bunkers and is bordered by tall trees. The trees may influence approaches to the green. The green has a generally uniform surface and a straight shape.
Hole 3 – PAR 3
The green is spacious with large rear bunkers to catch long tee shots. A water hazard may come into play near the green, so be cautious. Also, note the lateral water hazard along the right fairway edge.
Hole 4 – PAR 4
The tee shot on this short hole requires careful consideration. A direct approach necessitates clearing several mature trees, presenting a notable challenge. Alternatively, opting for two concise strokes should adequately position players on the green.
Hole 5 – PAR 4
When playing the fifth hole, golfers face a strategic decision off the tee. The ideal shot is to aim either to the left or right of the central fairway bunker, thereby avoiding its hazards and positioning oneself favourably for the next stroke. However, for those seeking a greater challenge, there is the option to attempt a direct line towards the green, demanding both accuracy and confidence in execution. The choice between a safer route and a riskier, more aggressive play will depend on individual skill and comfort with the hole's layout.
Hole 6 – PAR 4
A narrow line between the fairway bunkers is recommended for the tee shot to set up the approach to the green. The slope off the left edge of the fairway directs the ball away from the intended path, which can make the subsequent approach more challenging. The course boundary is located directly behind the green, so caution should be taken not to use excessive club on the approach.
Hole 7 – PAR 3
This hole presents a straightforward short Par 3, making it an ideal choice for a nearest the pin competition. Players are encouraged to pitch directly onto the green, where accuracy is rewarded. As golfers approach the green, they can also take in the picturesque view of the lake situated on the right, adding a scenic backdrop to the challenge of the hole.
Hole 8 – PAR 4
A highly precise shot along the centre of the fairway is essential. Using a driver may result in excessive distance; however, by avoiding the fairway bunkers, players are positioned for a straightforward short approach to the green.
Hole
9
– PAR 5
The open fairway leads to an elevated, two-tier green that demands precise approach shots. Beware of water on the right off the tee and subtle breaks on the green.
Hole
10
– PAR 3
Elevated trees overlook a green area. The space behind the green is limited, so choosing the right club is important. Bunkers are positioned on both sides of the tee shot.
Hole
11
– PAR 4
Maintaining confidence is essential when approaching this blind tee shot. Golfers who can execute a controlled draw will be advantaged, but it is important not to stray too far towards the left edge of the fairway.
Hole 12 – PAR 5
This straight par 5 is defined by its sharply sloping fairway, inviting golfers to unleash a powerful drive from the tee. As the ball lands, the downhill gradient encourages it to travel further, enabling impressive distance with well-struck shots. On dry days, the firm conditions make this hole particularly enticing for those looking to reach the green in just two strokes. Many players will find themselves tempted to take on the challenge, capitalising on the favourable terrain to maximise their chances of a swift and rewarding approach.
Hole 13 – PAR 4
A well-placed drive down the wide fairway sets up a short approach shot to the green. Attention should be given to the two large bunkers on the left edge of the fairway, towards which the slope directs the ball. Golfers who can fade their drive off the tee may find it beneficial, while others might aim for the left side of the fairway, considering the presence of trees. A two-tier green awaits the approach.
Hole 14 – PAR 5
The ideal line off the tee is between the two fairway bunkers; selecting the appropriate club is important because this dogleg right hole has many trees along the left side of the fairway. It is also advisable to stay left of the right-hand fairway trees, as recovery from that area can be difficult.
Hole 15 – PAR 4
Although not the longest hole on the course, the fifteenth is deceptively challenging due to its dogleg right configuration and the fairway's pronounced left-to-right slope. Golfers should aim their tee shots towards the large trees on the left side of the fairway; the natural gradient will help guide the ball back to the centre, offering an optimal approach position. Careful navigation is essential to avoid being caught out by the subtle difficulties of this hole, which demands both accuracy and strategic shot selection.
Hole 16 – PAR 4
A precise tee shot positioned in the centre of the fairway is essential to ensure an optimal approach to the green. Note that the fairway has a significant slope on the left side, so maintaining a straight trajectory is advisable. Aim to place your tee shot from the centre to the left portion of the fairway to secure a clear line into the green, avoiding any interference from trees located on the right.
Hole 17 – PAR 3
This hole offers a straightforward pitch onto the green, with little to trouble golfers on their approach. The bunker is positioned so that it should not come into play for most players, allowing for a confident shot towards the target. However, what sets this hole apart is its green, which is widely regarded as the most challenging on the course by a considerable margin. Players will need to exercise care and precision with their putts, as the difficulty of the green can quickly turn a promising approach into a testing finish.
Hole 18 – PAR 4
A straight drive threaded between the bunker on the left and the trees to the right sets up the final hole, but leaves a demanding approach shot to the green. The presence of water on the right side adds further pressure, requiring precise club selection and careful shot execution to avoid trouble and finish the round on a strong note.
This course is designed to meet the expectations of even the most experienced golfers, offering tee times seven days a week, excellent facilities, and a fully equipped pro golf shop. We provide a 24/7 online tee booking system for seamless scheduling. Additionally, our allweather covered driving range is available for your enjoyment. GANTON GOLF CLUB
landscapes and an all-
Yorkshires long-acknowledged premier course is said to be the finest inland layout in the country. A catalogue of impressive Top100 World rankings, place Ganton amongst the ‘Who’s Who’ of the world’s top golfing locations.
Golf was first played in Ganton in the summer of 1891. The course was originally laid out by St Andrews’ Tom Chisolm, and has since been touched by most leading golf course architects over the years, including Braid, Colt, Fowler, Taylor and MacKenzie. Not resting on their laurels, the Club has recently embarked on a major restoration project under the direction of leading golf course architect
Martin Ebert. Clearance of gorse has revealed natural sand lines that had been lost over time – the dramatic scale of these sand areas provides great challenge and pleasing natural aesthetics.
Ganton is the only inland UK Club to host the Ryder, Curtis & Walker Cups, and the Amateur Championship among many other significant events. In 2021 the Club hosted the English Strokeplay Championship (Brabazon Trophy) and the R&A Senior Amateur Championship. In 2023 the R&A returned to stage the Boys and Girls Championships won by Kris Kim (Walton Heath and Helen Briem (Germany).
Ganton remains an enigma, where golfers experience tradition, quality, and a great test of their ability; The par 71 course measures over 7000yrd from the Championship tees, but most will prefer to play from the range of shorter teeing options available.
The superbly appointed clubhouse is a shrine to golfing years gone by. The Thirsk, Vardon and Rudgard rooms all boasts views across the course and provide access to a wonderful outdoor terrace – perfect for al fresco eating and drinking.
Ganton Golf Club welcomes society groups throughout the year with excellent dining packages coupled with fantastic golf to create the ideal golf day.
Ganton is proud to have been closely linked to the history of British golf and visitors enjoy reviewing old photographs, original paintings and tournament memorabilia which detail ‘the Ganton story’.
Vardon House provides on-site dormy accommodation for up to 8 golfers, and many visitors to Ganton take the opportunity to book a ‘stay and play’ package so they can fully immerse themselves in the Club traditions and history.
Ganton is certainly a venue that should be on every discerning golfer’s bucket list.
