Lovingly known across the world as the home of golf, East Lothian offers a fantastic variety of the world’s best links courses and is an absolute must for any golf enthusiast. This year alone the hallowed ground that is the home of golf has hosted three high profile golfing events, highlighted by Gullane Golf Club hosting the Scottish Open and Ladies Scottish Open back in July, as well as Craigielaw Golf Club welcoming back some of the games legends by hosting the Scottish Seniors Open in September.

Located just a few minutes south of Edinburgh, the Lothians region is one of Scotland’s finest golf break destinations with a choice of well over twenty-two golf courses to test all ages and abilities.

The rugged and beautiful coastline of East Lothian is affectionately known as Scotland’s Golf Coast with so much choice within an hour’s drive from the historic and lively capital city of Edinburgh and its international airport.

North Berwick is a pleasant seaside town situated in East Lothian offering great beaches and coastal scenery. Comprising an eclectic mix of shops, cafes, bars and not to mention world-renowned golf courses, North Berwick boasts stunning views out to the Firth of Forth and the Bass Rock, the world’s largest northern gannet colony.

There is also plenty to keep the whole family entertained away from the fairways with cultural and traditional experiences such as boat trips around the local islands taking in some of the regions serene settings and astonishing wildlife.

The Glen, East Links is one of the most popular of the East Lothian golf courses. A venue not to be missed, the Club’s beautifully manicured golf course provides a challenging and enjoyable test of golf for all levels of golfer as well as boasting spectacular headland views across the Firth of Forth and Bass Rock.

Although golf was first played in East Lothian as far back as the 17th century, a nine-hole layout was not developed in North Berwick until 1894. It was later extended to the 18-hole layout that can be enjoyed today in 1906, by legendary golf course architect, James Braid and his design partner, Ben Sayers.

The Glen is an all-year-round golf course and is rarely closed due to inclement weather, playing normal tees and greens throughout the seasons.

long the beautiful East Lothian coastline of Scotland lies home to the sixth oldest golf club in the world, the Royal Musselburgh Golf Club.

Royal Musselburgh as a golf club is renowned for many things, especially its history. Dating back to the 1700's, Preston Grange House was originally owned by the Norman family de Quincy running the estate of Preston grange until they supported the losing side in the run up to the Battle of Bannockburn.

With many happenings over the years the full course was opened back in September 1926 and designed by the famous Open Championship golf architect James Braid. This first class picturesque parkland which stretches over 6,254 yards, is kept in tip top condition and is a treat to play. At only 149 yards comes “The Gully Hole�, so figure it out! How difficult could it be? From the tee you can't see what the hole has in store! Following over this 18 hole course is a skills test, lets hope the wind is on your side and blowing in the right direction offering an enjoyable challenging game. Certainly a course for the to do list!

Steeped in history The Old Club Cup has been awarded at The Royal Musselburgh since 1774 and is still played for competitively to this day. This valuable Silver Cup is housed in The National Golf Museum on the Scottish East coast of St. Andrews.

The interesting old market town of Musselburgh lies six miles east of Edinburgh where the River Esk meets the sea. The town is well known for golf, its famous racecourse as well as many great architectural displays. The 6601 yard championship course was designed by Donald Steel whose architectural expertise stretches across every open golf championship course. In fact, there are 22 other outstanding courses in the area making East Lothian ideal for touring golf societies who want maximise time on the course and minimise travel.

The course is relatively new on the scene; since opening in 2001 it has already hosted national events, including the 2006 Scottish Amateur Strokeplay Championship and was a qualifying course for the 2007 British Seniors Open at Muirfield.

Scotland’s rolling hills, stunning coastlines and dense parklands, are known to hide some of the UK’s best golf courses; Kilspindie Golf Club is amongst one of these.

As one might expect from a traditional Scottish links, it lies immediately on the coast and is host to a range of wildlife including seals and migratory geese. The views here are particularly stunning; on a clear day you may well make out Edinburgh Castle, which lies less than an hour away by car. Without a doubt, this is one of few courses for which it can be said that its outstanding quality is matched by its outstanding beauty.

Edinburgh is a city famed for its sense of humour, friendliness and inclusivity. With famous festivals, dormant volcanos and world-renowned museums, the Scottish capital more than holds its own with the other great capitals of Europe. For a long weekend away, you would be hard pressed to find a city with as much culture, shopping and history as Edinburgh; this makes it the perfect city break for couples and golf societies alike.

More locally to Kilspindie Golf Club, Aberlady nature reserve – one of the first of its kind in the area, has been dedicated to keeping this particular stretch of coast around Aberlady Bay, untainted by human influence for over half a century. The diverse wildlife, both animals and wild flowers, offer visitors a chance to really become reacquainted with the beauty of the landscape, as well as a serenity that is all too seldom achieved in our busy modern lives.

Kilspindie is reputed to be the 35th oldest golf club in the world, instituted in 1867 and with between 27-28 thousand pairs of feet enjoying these links every year, the club’s success is testament to its lasting design and layout. It’s challenging but is a clear favourite of many who have played it, with quick greens and well-defined fairways. It is a club proud of its history, even hosting an alternative Ryder Cup, with 12-man teams playing with pre1930’s hickory shafted clubs.

Whilst the course has remained largely unchanged, the clubhouse has been expanding to deal with the demands of the modern golfer. Whilst maintaining its charm and personality; it still has its original “Gentleman’s Locker Room and Bar”; the clubhouse is now able to cater for a range of events with style and comfort. Whilst the bar might be small, its stock is not, boasting an excellent array of beverages including over 80 different malt whiskeys (although we recommend you spread these out over a few visits).

Warmth and friendliness lie at the heart of this club, and comments such as this find their way into almost every review. Visitors pay the same as members for food and drink; it is clear that Kilspindie Golf Club want to create an open community of golfers all of whom are drawn to the club by the same things; an incredible course in a stunning environment. It is no wonder, so many people are drawn back year after year and Kilspindie is recognised locally, nationally and internationally as a hidden gem of Scotland.
