JACQUEMUS IS AN INDEPENDENT FASHION LABEL AND THIS PROJECT IS THEIR RECENTLY COMPLETED HEAD OFFICE. CURATED TOGETHER WITH SIMON PORTE-JACQUEMUS AND FRIEND SAMUEL BÉGIS OF TILL DUCA STUDIO, WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE 8TH ARRONDISSEMENT.
JACQUEMUS HEAD OFFICE ACTS AS THEIR HEADQUARTERS WHICH OPERATES AS A SHOWROOM AND WORKING STUDIO WITH RECEPTION, WORKSTATIONS, STUDIO, BREAK OUT AREAS, COURTYARD AND MEETING ROOMS.
THE HEADQUARTERS OCCUPIES 2 LEVELS WITH A CENTRAL COURTYARD ON THE FIRST FLOOR WHICH IS OVERLOOKED BY EACH CENTRAL WINDOW. THE SHOWROOM, MEETING ROOMS AND CENTRAL COURTYARD ARE STRATEGICALLY FOR CLIENTS ON THE FIRST FLOOR, WITH THE SECOND LEVEL FOR THE WORKING STUDIO, EMPLOYEE WORKSTATIONS AND BREAK OUT AREAS.
THE MINIMALIST SPACE FEATURES A PASTEL GREY EPOXY FLOOR COVERING WITH A SUBTLE TEXTURED RENDER ON THE WALLS AND FEATURES A STRIKING LIGHTING DESIGN ON EACH LEVEL ON THE CEILING. PAIRED WITH ECLECTIC AND ICONIC FURNITURE PIECES ADDING SHAPE AND SCULPTURAL FEATURES.
FITTED OUT WITHIN A RUSTIC AND TRADITIONAL PARISIAN CONDO BUILDING, THE RUSTIC EXTERIOR PAIRED WITH THE CURVED, SCULPTURAL AND DRAMATICALLY MINIMAL INTERIORS TO THE FACADE DISPLAY HIS PLAYFUL PERSONA AND APPROACH OF DESIGN.
I PERSONALLY LOVE THE MATERIAL CHOICES AND ECLECTIC PIECES OF FURNITURE, THE SPACE FEELS COLLECTED WITH A BALANCE OF NEW AND OLD. THE BROWN VELVET UPHOLSTERY, BLACK LEATHER, CHROME AND CONCRETE ARE A CLASSIC COMBINATION - WHILE THE COLLECTED FURNITURE CREATES PERSONALITY AND INTEREST. JACQUEMUS HEAD OFFICE, SHOWROOM & WORKSHOP

EACH SPACE IS ADORNED WITH SCULPTURAL FURNITURE ELEMENTS USED AS AN ACCESSORY SIMILAR TO ART. BISTRO SEATING ON TERRACE AREA CREATE GROUPS ZONES ON THE SHARED TERRACE.

DRAMATIC SCALE AND FEATURE OF THE CUSTOM LIGHTING TREATMENT CREATES A GALLERY LIKE SPACE FOR THE DEDICATED SHOWROOM, FEATURING THE CLASSIC CAMALEONDA SOFA.

BRIONI SHOWROOM, LONDON
‘“IT’S MORE LIKE A PRIVATE RESIDENCETHAN A RETAIL SPACE.. FORTUNATELY, THISBUILDING STILL EXISTED AS A HOUSE, SO IT WASMORE A CASE OFPEELING BACK LAYERS OFTRADITIONAL RETAIL FIXTURES TO REVEAL ITS BEAUTY.” PHILIP JOSEPH, P. JOSEPH STUDIO 2020

THE BRIONI SHOWROOM SITS WITHIN A CLASSIC, FOUR STOREY, GEORGIAN STYLE BUILDING WHICH WAS BUILT IN 1736 IN MAYFAIR, LONDON. WITH THE ORIGINAL FACADE INTACT, THE INTERIORS ARE CHARACTERISTIC OF AN 18TH CENTURY RESIDENTIAL TOWNHOUSE WITH ORNATE DETAILING, MOULDED FIREPLACES, HIGH CEILINGS AND BEAUTIFULLY DETAILED INTERCONNECTING STAIRCASE.
P. JOSEPH APPROACHED THE DESIGN OF THE SHOWROOM BY CREATING A NARRATIVE AND CONCEPT AROUND AN IMAGINARY ROMAN COLLECTOR MOVING INTO HIS LONDON HOME. ESSENTIALLY CREATING A PERSONA FOR THE ITALIAN BRAND BRIONI AND BRINGING THIS TO LIFE THROUGH THE INTERIORS OF EACH LEVEL. EVIDENT IN THE DECOR OF MID-CENTURY ITALIAN FURNITURE AND ROMAN MATERIALS SUCH AS TRAVERTINE AND AREBESCATO MARBLE. HOWEVER, TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THE IMPORTANCE OF PLACE BY CREATING A CLASSIC LONDON TOWNHOUSE WITH AN ITALIAN SOUL.
P. JOSEPH COLLABORATED WITH DESIGN HISTORIAN DR. CATHARAINE ROSSI TO CREATE A FRAMEWORK FOR SUCCESSFUL RESTORATION OF THE TOWNHOUSE AND ALSO SOURCE A COLLECTION OF HISTORIC POST-WAR ITALIAN DESIGNER FURNITURE PIECES. A KEY FEATURE AND SUCCESS TO THE DESIGN IS THE LEVEL OF ALMOST PLAYING DOWN TRADITIONAL RETAIL FIXTURES AND DISPLAY SHELVING IN PLACE OF MORE SOPHISTICATED DISPLAY PIECES AND SCULPTURAL ELEMENTS. THIS CREATES AN APPRECIATION FOR THE EXISTING HISTORIC BUILDING FORMS AND RESIDENTIAL AMBIENCE.
THE ITALIAN FURNITURE, LIGHTING AND TEXTILE COLLECTIONS ON DISPLAY SIT COMFORTABLY WITHIN THE ENGLISH ARCHITECTURAL FRAME AS SOFT WALL COLOURS REFERENCE THE PALETTE OF ROME. THERE IS A LAYER OF CRAFTSMANSHIP THAT TIES BOTH CULTURES TOGETHER BEAUTIFULLY. FEATURING FURNITURE AND LIGHTING PIECES FROM DESIGNERS SUCH AS CARLO SCARPA, PIER GIACOMO CASTIGLIONI, LUIGI CACCIA DOMINIONI AND ANGELO MANGIAROT.

MICHAEL RACHLIS TAPESTRY FROM 1952 CREATES AN ART PIECE/CHANGING SCREEN.

CLIENTS ARE GREETED UPON ENTRY AND AT THE BASE OF THE GRAND STAIRCASE, SETTING THE TONE OF THE OVERALL SPACE. EACH SPACE IS OPEN AND NOT CLOSED OFF, INTERCONNECTING CREATIVELY.

OLIVETTI SHOWROOM, VENICE ‘’A BUILDING IS INTENSIFIED THROUGH THE ELABORATION OF IT’S OWN MEDIUM - ALANGUAGE OF STICKS AND STONES.” CARLO SCARPA, 1959

CARLO SCARPA DESIGNED THE OLIVETTI SHOWROOM IN 1957 AND IT IS LOCATED IN THE HEART OF VENICE OVERLOOKING PIAZZA SAN MARCO. THE SHOWROOM IS ESSENTIALLY A DESIGNERS PILGRIMAGE AS IT IS CONSIDERED A SCARPA MASTERPIECE AND HAS BEEN ADORED AND FAVOURABLY DOCUMENTED WITHIN THE DESIGN WORLD.
THE SHOWROOM CLOSED IN 1997 AND WAS REOPENED BY THE ITALIAN ENVIRONMENTAL FOUNDATION (IEF) IN 2011. THE IEF ENGAGED THE SCARPA FOUNDATION TO PRESERVE THE PERFECTLY FORMED CONCRETE AND SUBTLE YET PRECISE DETAIL OF IT’S PREVIOUS GLORY. THE ENTIRE SHOWROOM IS TACTILE IN THE APPROACH TO MATERIALITY OF CONCRETE, BRASS, HANDMADE WOODEN SCREENS, LIMESTONE, PLASTER, MARBLE AND GLASS.
THE OFFSET AND BESPOKE CENTRAL CONCRETE STAIRCASE HAS BEEN STUDIED BY MANY AND IS A CLEAR INDICATION OF CARLO SCARPA’S ACUTE ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND CRAFT.
ANOTHER PROMINENT FEATURE OF THE OLIVETTI SHOWROOM IS A LARGE SCULPTURE, “NUDO AL SOLE”BY ALBERTO VIANI, NEAR THE FRONT ENTRANCE. THE SCULPTURE SITS ON A SLAB OF BLACK MARBLE WITH WATER RUNNING OVER THE STONE.
THE FLOOR TILES FEATURE A HAND CUT MARBLE MOSAIC AND ARE NOW SOLD THROUGH OLIVETTI AND OTHER DISTRIBUTORS. THE MOSAIC TILES COME IN VARIOUS MARBLE, TRAVERTINE AND OTHER PRECIOUS STONES. ALSO VARYING IN GROUT DISTANCES TO CREATE DIFFERENT LOOKS; EITHER NARROW OR WIDER GROUTS DEPENDING ON THE DESIRED OUTCOME.

INDIVIDUAL STONE SLABS ARE SUPPORTED BY BRASS RODS AND FORM THE STAIR LEADING UP TO THE SECOND LEVEL AND BALCONIES. THE STAIRS APPEAR TO FLOAT AND ALLOW VIEWS THROUGH THE ROOM.

RED AND WHITE FLOOR TILE MEETS A PLASTER WALL AND WOOD PANEL CEILING.

EACH SPACE IS ADORNED WITH SCULPTURAL FURNITURE ELEMENTS USED AS AN ACCESSORY SIMILAR TO ART. THE FLOOR TILES CREATE VISUAL PERSPECTIVE THROUGH TO THE CORRIDOR.

SCARPA JUXTAPOSES ROUGH AND SMOOTH TEXTURES IN THE SAME LIMESTONE TO CREATE TEXTURE AND TO ELEVATE THE OLIVETTI SIGNAGE AT THE FRONT ENTRY - MAKING IT A PART OF THE STRUCTURE.
