Bird’s 2023 WE ARE ONE Festival is made possible in part by funding from the Jackson Foundation
WELCOME TO THE 2ND ANNUAL WE ARE ONE FESTIVAL
Thank you for joining us tonight as we open our 2023 WE ARE ONE Festival with tonight’s performance by Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE. White Bird inaugurated the WE ARE ONE Festival in 2022 as a way to celebrate not only the leadership of exceptional Artistic Directors of color, but also the range of cultural experiences represented by the dancers they bring to the stage. Ronald K. Brown, as Founder and Artistic Director of EVIDENCE, exemplifies the leader who drives greater understanding between people from all walks of life. By deftly weaving many distinct techniques, especially those of the African diaspora, Brown continues to build upon the legacy of meaningful work and versatile performers maintained over EVIDENCE’s nearly forty-year history.
Tonight, we will first be treated to some of Ronald K. Brown’s most recent work, and then we’ll close the evening with a beloved classic. The first piece on the program, Open Door, was originally set on the dancers of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; the version you will see tonight premiered on the dancers of EVIDENCE just last month, to critical acclaim. Brown’s most recent work, The Equality of Night and Day (TEND), aided by the words of esteemed professor and political activist Angela Davis, looks back to show us how much further we have to go. Finally, Upside Down joyfully reinforces the value of Brown’s communal spirit.
Our WE ARE ONE Festival continues in two weeks with the return of A.I.M by Kyle Abraham, March 2-4 at the Newmark Theatre. The company will perform An Untitled Love, Abraham’s immersive new work which pays homage to the complexities of self love and Black love and draws from the irresistible catalogue of Grammy Award-winning R&B artist D’Angelo. White Bird proudly awarded Kyle Abraham our Barney Prize in 2020 to commission An Untitled Love, and we hope you’ll be there to enjoy it with us.
Tickets to A.I.M by Kyle Abraham and the other remarkable dance companies comprising our 25th Anniversary Season - Ballet Hispánico, Paul Taylor Dance Company, and MOMIX - can be found online at whitebird.org

ABOUT WHITE BIRD
Our Values
Excellence in Performance
Diversity in Movement
Accessibility and Inclusiveness
Generosity of Spirit
Dedication to Community
Fiscal Responsibility
Our Equity Commitment
White Bird believes in the transformative power of movement and its capability to uplift, inspire, and unite. Historically, institutionalized performing arts were built within a system of ingrained racism, sexism, ableism, ageism, and transphobia, with the result being a field that does not prioritize the voices of marginalized groups. Our commitment is to break down these structures and to foster a community that not only represents a diverse range of individuals, but gives equal access and value to their voices.
The entire staff and board at White Bird understand that systemic social norms are inherently biased. We acknowledge the unique nuances between equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), and recognize the added complexities of addressing these concepts in a historically oppressive region such as Oregon. Our vision is an ecosystem where the power of the arts is able to impact and inspire all communities, while simultaneously uniting each individual in a shared human experience.
