NOCHE FLAMENCA
We are very happy to welcome you tonight as we continue our Uncaged Series with Noche Flamenca, performing their new work inspired by the art of Francisco de Goya, Searching for Goya. This will be Noche Flamenca’s third presentation by White Bird –please join us in welcoming them back!
As we study Goya, and as we prepare to recognize the 250th anniversary of our own revolutionary war, we can reflect on the legacies of another revolution: the Spanish War of Independence. Some of Goya’s most influential work, including TheThirdofMay1808, contemplate the tragedies inflicted on the Spanish by the First French Empire, which disturbed Goya. While he is remembered as one of Spain’s great Masters, Goya’s success in painting complicated his relationship to his country. Goya had patrons in both France and Spain, and he retired to Bordeaux late in life. Goya’s allegiance, at least within the Spanish court, was often in question.

Meanwhile, Flamenco’s rise as a mainstay of Spanish culture can be traced back to the War. Throughout the War and in its aftermath, many in Spain were hungry for a source of cultural pride, divorced from the largely upper- and middle-class Afrancesados (Spaniards who were influenced by French culture). It is no small irony that Flamenco, which is heavily influenced by the culture of the Gitanos (Romani people of Spain) became part of that pride. Gitanos were frequently marginalized in France throughout the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, but in the 19th century they, and Flamenco generally, embodied a virtue most Spaniards celebrated: they were not French.
We will continue highlighting dance from around the world, and close our WE ARE ONE Festival, when we return to the Schnitzer on March 19 with ChangMu Dance Company. Tickets are on sale now at whitebird.org

DIRECTOR'S NOTE
"In light of recent political and global events I felt drawn to revisit the work of artist Francisco de Goya (1746-1828), whose graphics and paintings reveal the horrors of war, the monsters that live within us, the humiliation of the humble, and the value of the strength and sensibility of animals. The complexity of content and emotion motivated them to reimagine Goya’s works through flamenco. With the help of Goya expert and Metropolitan Museum Curator Mark McDonald, we embarked on the creation of Searching For Goya. The production has been in development since early 2022—at The Joyce Theater, The 62’ Center at Williams College, Plays and Players Theatre, and other prestigious cultural institutions. It made its world premiere in November 2023 at the University of Washington’s Meany Center for the Performing Arts, where The Seattle Times called it “a dance performance you don’t want to miss."
- MARTÍN SANTANGELO
“The timeless themes, emotions, and conditions that emerge are key to Goya’s enduring relevance. Like the world in which Goya lived, our own is rent by ignorance and fear and ripped apart by conflict and suffering that have taken on new dimensions in the face of a pandemic. Now and into the future, Goya’s art will continue to engage those who seek the essence of human being.”
-Excerpt From "Goya's Graphic Imagination" By Mark McDonald, Curator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art

ABOUT THE COMPANY
The mission of Noche Flamenca is to create a diverse theatrical body of performance through song, music, and dance that expresses a rigorous, spellbinding aesthetic in the form of flamenco; one that exceeds the highest artistic expectations. The company strives to captivate its audiences through its live performances and to evoke in them the vivid and expansive sea of passion and emotion that is flamenco. Through its educational outreach and residency programs, the company seeks to educate and enlighten persons of all ages, races, and economic backgrounds regarding the authentic form of flamenco – a form born of ancestral cultural repression and racial expulsion.
Under the direction and choreography of Martín Santangelo, the award-winning Noche Flamenca is recognized as one of the world’s premier touring companies. Formed in 1993 by Santangelo and his award-winning wife, Soledad Barrio, the company has toured throughout the globe, including regular seasons in New York City, and performances in North and South America, Europe, and Australia. Hailed by critics everywhere for its transcendent and deeply emotional performances, Noche Flamenca is recognized as the most authentic flamenco touring company in the field today. Santangelo has successfully brought to the stage the essence, purity, and integrity of one of the world's most complex and mysterious art forms. All aspects of flamenco – dance, song, and music – are interrelated and given equal weight, creating a true communal spirit within the company - the very heart and soul of flamenco.
Noche Flamenca has been recognized with awards from the National Dance Project, the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, the MAP Fund, and the Lucille Lortel Award for Special Theatrical Experience, among many others.
Noche Flamenca would like to thank its funders: The National Endowment for the Arts, the Howard Gilman Foundation, The Harkness Foundation for Dance, The Fan Fox and Leslie R. Samuels Foundation, and The Shubert Foundation.
