Every community is full of hidden gems- from local businesses and restaurants to a wide range of annual festivals and community celebrations. Events such as farmers markets, art fairs, parades and community festivals like the Fourth of July celebration in Forest Lake, Derby Days in Bayport and Lumberjack Days in downtown Stillwater bring the community together during the summer. In the winter, residents can venture out to the various parks located in the St. Croix River Valley to cross-country ski
When there is not a large festival going on, residents can enjoy a boat ride down the river by booking a ticket with Stillwater River Boats. Visitors can take a stroll down Main Street in Stillwater and stop in at the multiple restaurants that overlook the river or find something they love at one of the multiple small businesses located downtown. They can stop at the Teddy Bear Park to capture a photo or two with the sculpture Teddy Bears.
As always, readers should check their community website or call prior to venturing out for a day filled with activity.
If you have news to share with our news team, please send it to news@ presspubs.com. If you are an advertiser and would like to be involved in next year’s edition, please call 651-4071200 and ask for a Press multimedia representative.
We at Press Publications look forward to spending another year covering all the hidden gems your community has to offer.

Located between St. Paul to the west and the St. Croix River to the east, Lake Elmo Airport (21D) is convenient for both business and leisure travelers.
The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) owns and maintains a seven-airport system. Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) – one of the nation’s largest airports and a key airline hub – is MAC’s flagship facility. MAC also owns and operates six general aviation airports, sometimes called reliever airports, because they attract traffic away from MSP – that serve corporate aircraft and recreational fliers. All reliever airports, including Lake Elmo, are within 35 miles of the downtowns of Minneapolis and St. Paul.
In operation since 1951,
the airports two runways accommodate nearly 42,000 landings and takeoffs each year. The airport is overseen by Philip Tiedeman, who manages both the Lake Elmo and Anoka CountyBlaine Airport.
Beginning in 2019, the Lake Elmo Airport began a three-phase project to make several improvements, aligning with the airport’s long-term comprehensive plan, drafted in 2016. Improvements were needed to support the anticipated growth in traffic safely and efficiently, according to MAC.
Improvements included:
• Relocating and extending Runway 14/32 to 3,500 feet
• Realigning 30th Street North around the relocated runway
protection zone and reconnecting to the existing intersection with Neal Avenue
• Constructing a new Crossfield taxiway to serve the new Runway 14 end
• Converting the existing runway to a parallel taxiway and construct other taxiways as needed to support the relocated runway
• Reconstructing and extending crosswind Runway 4/22 to 2,750 feet
• Upgrading instrument approach to use newer technology

The Stillwater Public Library was originally established by a public referendum in 1897. Initially titled the Carnegie Library, it was built in 1902 before opening to the public the following year. The library has seen two different expansions over the past several decades, one in 1973 and the other in 2006.
Today, the library sits at just under 39,000 square feet and holds 87,017 books, 4,570 DVDs and 1,849 print magazines and newspapers across 106 different titles.
The library features many programs for toddlers, children and teenagers. Toddlers and children can experience the joy of reading with Preschool and Baby/ Toddler Storytimes. Teenagers seeking research and homework
resources can find them in the library’s HelpNow by Brainfuse, Points of View Reference Center and Learning Express Library online resources. A unique option for younger readers is the library’s Wonderbooks. These specially designed picture and chapter books include digital and audio features to help readers be more engaged and interactive.
On the library’s upper level is both an art gallery and meeting spaces. The gallery features a new local artist exhibition every two months, during which the artist is present on-site for one evening to meet others and discuss their work.
In addition to checking out books, DVDs and magazines, patrons can also check out
portable DVD players and Xcel Energy kits. The latter helps determine what home appliances use the most energy and how to maintain home energy use. Patrons can also check out telescope kits and nature backpacks for outdoor activities such as birdwatching and identifying insects. New future options for patrons will include a virtual reality kit for gaming (with a MetaQuest VR headset) and a special kit for bird lovers that will include binoculars and field guides.
The Stillwater Public Library is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Throughout the year, the Bayport Community Action League (BCAL) provides the residents of Bayport and the St. Croix Valley endless opportunities to come together as a community to celebrate the seasons, the Holidays and the place many call home.
The goal of the group is to bring community together, provide an opportunity for personal growth and leadership training and provide social and recreational activities for the members of its organization.
The BCAL started off as just a small group that put-on Derby
Days, a weekend long celebration that takes place throughout the town of Bayport. Currently, the BCAL hosts seven major events throughout the year. Events include an ice cream social in June, a Farmers Market and a tree lighting ceremony in December. Derby Days usually takes place the third weekend of every September. The BCAL and other local businesses host the event. The BCAL sells rubber ducks about two months leading up to the weekend. The ducks are dumped into the creek in Perro Park, located in Bayport. Once in the water, the ducks then race to
the end of the creek. The person with the winning duck receives a prize.
The Farmer’s Market is every Monday at the Village Green beginning June 9 and ends on October 13. It is from 2:30- 6:30 p.m. The market includes a variety of food and craft vendors each week.
The group meets the second Thursday of every month in the Bayport Legion. During the warmer months, the group meets outside at Lakeside Park. To be a member, you have to be 18 years old to join.

The city formerly known as South Stillwater, Bayport is the result of the mid-1800s merging of three towns: Middletown, Bangor and Baytown. The city was renamed Bayport in 1922.

Over the years, the villages of Bayport, Lakeland, Lakeland Shores, Lake St. Croix Beach, Oak Park Heights and St. Mary’s Point have been organized out of the township — leaving a largely rural area dotted with farms.
