EDITOR’S NOTE IN FOCUS Dr. NB Jawale, IAS

Director & Addl. Secretary Odisha Tourism

23 Dear Readers, The previous month I had an opportunity to visit Odisha –Jewel of the East. Have seen the golden triangle of the state, Bhubaneswar-Puri-Konark through my eyes; definitely one of my best experiences so far. I must congratulate the Department of Tourism, Government of Odisha for maintaining tourist friendly atmosphere with all basic facilities.

DESTINATION Explore the Wildlife in Andhra Pradesh

However, despite having a vast potential of tourism especially in Buddhist segment and a proximity to Asean nations Odisha is not getting the deserving number of travellers from this part of the world. This means Odisha needs to be more aggressive to connect with the travellers of these nations, which has an immense potential to enhance the tourism business of the state remarkably. I was surprised to know that only one percent of the total enquiries – Odisha receives, are coming from Asean countries which is so close to the state. The great combination of geographical location and Buddhist segment is the biggest advantages that can bring exceptional growth for Odisha tourism from Asean nations much comfortably and speedily as compare to any other part of the World. The newly launched Air Asia flight is a giant leap in this direction, now it’s time for Odisha to act upon.

Government may accord infrastructure status to smaller tourism projects: Secretary Tourism Jai Kishan Kaparwan

T

he tourism sector suffers from a gap in terms of worldclass infrastructure development in the country’s tourist destinations. There was a shortage of one lakh classified hotel rooms in the country and this gap can be bridged only by the states alone as they adopt investor-friendly policies, said Rashmi Verma, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, while speaking at the sidelines of 3rd edition of FICCI Tourism Investors Meet.

According to her, the states can give a boost to investments and infrastructure development. As to create any infrastructure land is the first requirement, whether it is hotel, Rashmi Verma amusement park or anything else Secretary Tourism cannot be done without land. “However, Government of India it’s good to note that many states are coming up with investor friendly policies; that will surely attract investment in every segment including hotel,” she further added.

According to her, the government was looking into giving infrastructure status to smaller units. One of the big reasons why hotel industry is not coming forward or there is no more investment in this sector, apart from many challenges like non availability of land parcels, high land price etc., is our hotels are occupied for four to five months only. Rest of the period the occupancy at our hotel is very low making it an unviable project to invest in hotels here. Many hotels get close down during summer months because they find it unviable to run it. She feels, this is very unfortunate that even after working for so many years we are not able to provide basic facilities required by a tourist be it international or domestic. Clean toilets and way side amenities at our major tourism circuits are missing. Further elaborating on the various sector of tourism that can enhance the growth of industry stakeholders Varma said: “There was a need to develop experiential tourism for foreign tourists such as cruise tourism and textile tourism.” The overseas offices were also being revamped to reach out to tourists across the globe. She informed that for promotion and marketing of tourism products of the country, social media was being leveraged to reach global tourists.

or anyone who’s planning on taking an international trip, ixigo, India’s leading travel search marketplace recommends booking flights from tier 2 cities such as Jaipur, Lucknow, Amritsar, Kochi, etc. By doing so travellers are likely to save upto 41% on their air tickets. With low-cost airlines such as Scoot, AirAsia, Tigerair, Thai Smile, Air Arabia and Air India Express starting operations from tier 2 cities, more and more people are opting to fly out of these cities to fit their international trips in smaller budgets. Commenting on the latest trends, Aloke Bajpai, CEO & Cofounder, ixigo, said - “We found that the difference in international airfares from tier 1 and 2 cities is drastic enough to urge travellers to modify their travel plans and fly out of these cities. If planned in time, at an average one can save around 41% on flight bookings, which is much more than the cost that one would have to bear to travel to these tier 2 cities to take their flight. For instance, if you live in Delhi and are planning to travel to Singapore, catching a flight from Jaipur will prove to be cheaper despite the cost involved in reaching there.” It also isn’t a bad idea to take an extra day or two in hand and explore the city of origin. So if someone is taking a flight to Kuala Lumpur from Amritsar, taking an extra day in hand will allow them to explore the city before they head to their international destination. In all, this approach will prove to be beneficial for the traveller in every possible way.

Odisha having the vast potential of tourism in India can become the biggest gainer if tourism is taken seriously by the stakeholders.”

He further stressed upon the challenges and said: “Despite having a vast potential of tourism Odisha is not getting the deserving number of travellers. We are lacking in infrastructure especially in hotels. Infrastructure status to the hospitality sector is need of the hour. This status will impact positively as the repayment schedule of loans will increase (from 8 year to 14 years) and developing hotels will become more viable.” The fraternity is demanding an International Convention Centre, conveniently located to other parts of the city. Elaborating more on this, Mohanty said: “A convention centre in city would be an ideal destination to attract a number of conferences and conventions from different countries and states. Infrastructure Status to Hospitality Sector: Giving infrastructure status to the hospitality industry is a long pending demand. If it is accepted the repayment schedule of loans will increase and creating hotels will become more viable.

Development of Chilika Lake: Chilika Lake is a brackish water lagoon, spread over Puri, Khurda and Ganjam districts of Odisha. Asean is the low-hanging fruit for Odisha; need to act upon: N B Jawale The great combination of geographical location and Buddhist segment is the biggest advantage that can bring exceptional growth for Odisha tourism from Asean nations; much comfortably and speedily as compare to any other part of the world. The newly launched Air Asia flight is a giant leap in this direction, now it’s time for Odisha to act upon. Rajesh Tiwari

D

espite having a vast potential of tourism especially in Buddhist segment and a proximity to the Asean Nations Odisha is not getting the deserving number of travellers from this part of the world. This means Odisha needs to be more aggressive to connect with the travellers of these nations, which have immense potential to enhance the tourism business of the state remarkably. “We have got high enquires from US, Europe and Middle East countries but less than one percent – of the total enquiries, from Asean countries – which actually is the low-hanging fruit for us, we need to act upon for instant growth” says Dr. Nitin Bhanudas Jawale, IAS Director and Additional Secretary, Odisha Tourism. The newly launched Air Asia flight which connects Bhubaneswar to Kuala Lumpur has re-invigorated the travel fraternity. This connectivity has opened up a new window of opportunity for the state. As informed by him the state is gearing up to launch massive marketing and promotional activities in this part of the world to sensitize the travellers about the unique tourism products of the state. Elaborating on the segments that can be explored by travellers, Dr Jawale said: “Buddhist segment is the way forward to reach Asean countries and attract a huge chunk of business from here.” “This segment has the vast potential to expedite the growth of our stakeholders much easily and quickly. Be it tour operators or hoteliers, all of them should really take much use of this (Buddhist segment) as we are now directly connected to South East Asia through Air Asia,” he added.

Since the state has rich legacy as rich as Bodhgaya and Sarnath the fraternity should really work hard on it. “The tourism department is working on this and we believe the stakeholders of this industry will come forward.” We have heard quite often that Odisha has the beaches, mountains, wildlife, heritage, culture and so many things for all kind of travellers. However, looking at the size of traffic that the state is receiving at the moment, there is a common perception that the state is not doing enough to get its deserving share from tourism sector. “One thing I would like to mention our stakeholders that we are working hard to establish our state as one of the premiere destination in tourism. We are already catching up with neighbouring states, and poised to establish Odisha as a major tourism destination - for domestic as well as foreign travellers, in next couple of years,” says a confident Director Tourism.

many other places. The most unique but unexplored spot of the state is Chilika Lake – the largest brackish water lake. “Since this is the hidden treasure of our state, the Department of Tourism is all set to develop and promote Chilika Lake in a big way. We have identified a huge land bank around lake which is available for investment purpose,” said Dr. Jawale. “Just like that we have identified Shamuka Beach to develop for tourism activities. We are coming up with a 1000 acres mega tourism project over there. The whole area will have golf courses, hotels and other tourism related activities. This is going to be the biggest tourism area in the entire country,” he further informed. The department of tourism has signed a MoU with the Forest Department to promote Eco-tourism in a big way. The department is working on creating infrastructure and simplifying its policies to promote this segment of tourism.

“We have got high enquires from US, Europe and Middle East countries but less than one percent – of the total enquiries, from Asean countries – which actually is the low-hanging fruit for us, we need to act upon for instant growth” Dr. Nitin Bhanudas Jawale, IAS Director & Addl. Secretary Odisha Tourism While elaborating on the various developments happening across the state he informed the department has identified several tourism zones to develop for creating more activities and facilities. “The golden triangle of Odisha –Bhubaneswar, Puri and Konark which attracts a large number of travellers still require a lot of infrastructure, and we are working on the same,” added Dr Jawale. Odisha is blessed with a long coastline and unique places like Chandrabhaga Beach, Bhitarkanika Sanctuary and

According to him the department is planning to promote Eco-tourism in a big way and most of its creative will showcase the eco products of the state. The state has 62 different tribes – with different language and culture, one cannot find this mosaic anywhere else. “This is a very unique product for American and Europian tourist. Its going to be an important product for Odisha to promote,” concludes Dr Jawale.

he World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has partnered with UNCTAD, the United Nations Conference on Development and Trade, to present the Annual Report on Economic Development in Africa at UNWTO’s Headquarters in Madrid. The 2017 edition focuses on Tourism as a catalyst for Transformative and Inclusive Growth in the continent and underlines the immense potential of the sector. A flourishing economic sector responsible for 21 million jobs – 1 out of 14 -. This is how the UNCTAD Report on ‘Economic Development in Africa: Tourism as a catalyst for Transformative

and Inclusive Growth’ describes tourism in Africa. The document also recalls that tourism represents around 46% of all service exports in Africa. Together with a detailed analyses of the economic impact of tourism in Africa, the publication includes a number of policy recommendations such as the fostering tourism development to bridge the gaps with rural areas and as a driving force to reduce poverty. “The power of tourism is not only related to big figures in economic terms, but also in its impact on inclusiveness, gender equality, recovery processes after conflict and peace,” said Claudia Roethlisberger, Economist at UNCTAD who has participated in the development of the Report. The Report compiles data from 1995-1998 and 2011-2014 and highlights the progress from 24 to 56 million international tourist arrivals in the continent, as well as the evolution from 14 USD billion to 47 billion USD dollars in exports from international tourism. Travel Tech Show at WTM to highlight payment solutions The Travel Tech Show at WTM London 2017 will focus on payments solution with a dedicated lounge, reflecting not only the importance of payments across the global travel ecosystem but also a desire from last year’s attendees for more insight into this sector. WH Desk

P

ayment solutions are relevant across all verticals and in all markets. As the distribution landscape in travel continues to evolve, payment solutions providers are forming a vital role in ensuring that flow of monies between the various stakeholders in the travel process is efficient, reliable and secure.

Simon Press Senior Director WTM London

34 June 2017

Any consumer-facing travel business needs to have a payments solution in place which makes it easy for travellers to buy, especially with the shift to online and mobile transactions. However, there is also a growing market for specific business-to-business solutions which facilitate the way that suppliers pay each other, how intermediaries pay suppliers, or how suppliers and intermediaries pay commission to agents or affiliates.

More than 2,000 attendees at last year’s WTM London expressed an interest in payment solutions, with accommodation providers the most responsive, followed by retail and online agents with a large proportion also coming from tour operators. The interest is coming from senior executives, with payments capturing the attention of more than 300 CEO and managing director level attendees. As an indication of the scale of the payments business, Priceline Group, the world’s largest travel company by market capitalization, handled 173 million room night bookings in the first three months of 2017 across its brands. This has resonance in the context of how it handles and accounts for tens of millions of consumer payments but also in terms of how it – or indeed any third party retailers – redirect the payment back to the property owner. As consumers are transacting more online, patterns are emerging which highlight significant difference between markets. Worldpay, a FTSE-100 listed payment services business, has carried out research into how and why travellers in six key markets pay for their vacations. WTM London Senior Director Simon Press said: “Effective payment mechanisms are needed for consumers to buy their trip and for suppliers and intermediaries to pay each other. The Payments Solutions lounge at The Travel Tech Show at WTM will give the payments industry the profile it deserves at the leading global event for the travel industry.”

Re-Branding India with new tagline is need of the hour By Gour Kanjilal, Executive Director, IATO and Former, Dy. Director General, Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India. and Freelance Journalist. The views expressed by the author are personal. WH Desk

T

he benefits of successful branding are well understood in the context of consumer products and services. Good consumer products enhance consumer satisfaction by virtue of its attributes and ensure profitability for the brand owner. So in respect of business efforts, branding is well accepted. So IBM, Coca-Cola, GE and TATA etc. hold respect and people as consumer associate the products with confidence because of quality service and experience.

However, branding a nation especially a sub-continent like India with each state holding its own unique attractions, culture, heritage, pride is not an easy task. No doubt, most of major countries evoke a mix of feelings Gour Kanjilal in people’s heart across the world Executive Director i. e. Singapore for its cleanliness, IATO Thailand of its unique culture and experience, Malaysia as truly Asia with its ethnic composition of culture, Italy for its fashion, Kenya for wildlife, Mauritius for its un spoilt beaches etc. In fact they combine other attributes also and multiplicity of identity based on the prime known image identifiable. Similarly from tourism perspective, we created ‘Incredible India’ for branding India and it worked quite well which based its unique attraction through its tourism variety, cultural variety, IT leadership, Ayurveda and Spiritual sanctity. But India as country we need to look for a positive branding which relates to giant leaps made in economic field and not purely depending on the past or culture which spoke traditions.

There are revolutionary changes in socio-economic, human development indicators share in world trade and scientific progress. If at all a rebranding effort is taken up, the impact may take anything between five to ten years as a negative perception is embedded in people’s mind and it would be easier said than done and even if the attempt is made with full sincerity, there will be always divergent views from various states. Also we need to have focused approach and not pleasing all states approach. There is no balanced development. Also it is not only branding but would require to see that what is promised is delivered Incredible India in tourism sector could not achieve the desired result. Though it created some positive awareness but failed to keep up as physical infrastructure at the places exposed were not ready viz Rural Tourism complexes North Eastern states and lost the opportunities. May be these campaigns were also launched at a time India was passing through difficult times due to global economic slowdown, terror attacks in various parts of India, heavy taxation regime, hike in air tickets, high petrol costs, global terrorism, natural calamities soon and so forth. Still we need to have a rebranding to create a new thrust with new niche products like cruise tourism, Spa and Wellness tourism, sports Tourism (Golfing holidays, Polo Aqua sports, Adventure (Heli-skiing, elephant/horse safaris, Himalayan car rally, Desert safaris, High attitude expeditions) which were never exposed to tourists in a focused manner and along with that India’s economic, scientific and technological progress. History, tradition, craft man ship diversity may be given a backseat. Similarly Medical tourism, Higher Education where IITS, IIM’s have created a global image should be projected. We must first create India products visibility in western markets and produced in India level and people should run for India products (not in neighboring countries) but major developed world. Something like India where you see the world and where products are Global with tag line like “One Nation with countless destinations.” “Enjoy the best of global Experience you can imagine” and ensure the delivery of that quality.

This Monsoon; Indian travellers bullish on Domestic Holidays with a 60% increase in demand WH Desk

T

homas Cook has observed an exponential increase in demand for domestic travel during the Monsoons. Despite being a traditional low or off-season, the Company has witnessed a significant 60% increase in demand for Monsoon 2017; with a sustained Y-o-Y uptake of approx. 55%, over the last 3 years.

Monsoons being a traditional low season for travel, the dip in demand as compare to supply works well to the consumer’s advantage: special deals/discounts offered by airlines and hotels create strong allure/incentive to inspire travel savers. Additionally, value-options like complimentary transfers, dining or spavouchers make Monsoon travel a truly attractive value proposition for Indians. Statistics available with Thomas Cook India reveal that travel-hungry Indian consumers leverage the Monsoon opportunity to avail of savings of 15-20% or more on domestic packages, compared to peak season rates. This travel saver trend is especially high with value seekers; strong uptake seen across DINKs, millennials, ad hoc groups of friends and family; equally corporate incentives/ team activities.

The Monsoons offer India’s work-weary warriors potential for much needed rest and relaxation- a mini-break from work pressures. And with 3 to 4 long weekends during this period, scope for both weekend and extended weekend getaways. The Monsoons showcase India at her best, with pleasant weather, a refreshing green cover and waterfalls- water bodies in full flow, hence offering today’s protagonist traveller eclectic travel experiences: self-drive holidays and outdoor-adventure journeys of discovery (including nature trails and landscape photography tours to The Valley of Flowers at Uttarakhand, Maharashtra’s picture perfect KaasPathar Valley, etc). This is also the best time for Kerala’s famed ayurveda treatment and a leisurely back-waters tour; also indulgent spa-wellness getaways. In India, Kerala continues to be a favorite with strong preference for the beaches of Kovalam and Varkala, hill retreats of Munnar and Vagamon; equally the pristine backwaters of Kumarakom and forests of Thekkady and the Silent Valley. Thomas Cook India has also observed an increasing demand for Auroville in Puducherry, Bhutan and Ladakh this season too. Travellers in/around Delhi are keen on short and drivable holidays to Manali, Dharamshala, Mcleodganj, Mussoorie. For travellers based in Mumbai/Maharashtra; Harishchandragadh, Rajmachi, Lohagad, Igatpuri, Lonavala, Matheran and Mahableshwar feature prominently.
