Quick and complete vaccination going to race ahead, Director UNWTO

Suman Billa Director UNTWO

W

hile addressing the virtual plenary session of the 'Second Travel, Tourism & Hospitality e-Conclave organised by FICCI, Suman Billa, Director, United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNTWO), Technical Cooperation & Silk Road Development, said that countries that can achieve quick and complete vaccination are going to race ahead and kickstart their economies sooner. Countries that are prioritizing vaccination will reach optimum level of production sooner. This will widen economic disparities across the world. While further elaborating on this, Billa said that COVID will level playing fields across the globe and vaccination will play an important role in this aspect. "Whether I am in Sri Lanka, India, or any part of the world, if I had my two shots of the vaccine and I have a certificate to prove it, I should be able to travel. There is going to be some amount of asymmetry on this front. From an Indian perspective, therefore, what we need to do is to well and truly open up travel, especially for those who are vaccinated. For international travellers, we need to jettison the principle of reciprocity.”

The industry is facing severe financial constraints and even a limited reopening of the industry would go a long way in improving the health of the industry, the stakeholders said. They have sought that the Goa government should now announce a conditional reopening of the state for foreign tourists, subject to the Coronavirus situation being under control in order that they can plan for the upcoming season. No new foreign tourists have set foot in Goa since March last year after the country shut its borders to leisure travel and stopped issuing tourist visas. Announce E-tourist Visa & International flights by September, suggests Subhash Goyal News Desk

P

resident, Confederation of Tourism Professionals, Subhash Goyal feels that the pandemic (Covid-19) which has spread across the world and changing its variant frequently is going to stay for a long, and the people across the world has to learn to deal with it. Goyal feels that when there is uncertainty about the end of pandemic, the Indian government should announce e-tourist visa and operation of international flights by September or October this year. “The sooner we do this, the sooner it will help our economy revive,” added Goyal. “This will not only help to save millions of jobs but also enable India to further boost its exports and become a global leader which is a dream of our Prime Minister,” he says. “Just like Africa allows people with yellow fever vaccine to travel, similarly – we should allow fully vaccinated international tourists to travel to India, and Indians to travel abroad to countries which are open to Indians via schedule flights,” stressed Goyal.

Thousands of Travel Agents & Tour Operators have already become bankrupt.

“We have to fulfil our Prime Minister's dream of making India a 5 trillion dollar economy. Tourism is the only industry, which is labour intensive and has a multiplier effect on the economy. Therefore, we need to act now before it is too late,” he emphasised.

Like all other countries in the world they have not received any financial support or bailout package. The only hope for survival is starting of e-tourist visas and scheduled international flights.

While explaining the need of the hour Goyal made several points mentioned as below: The tourist season to India is from October to March and we need not to lose this opportunity in the year 2021 since year 2020 was a total wash out. In 2019, India earned Rs.2,10,981 crores Foreign Exchange from the period January to December or 3.1 billion US dollars in the month of December 2019 (source MOT). We received more than 10 million tourists in 2019. International tourism accounts for almost 10% of India's GDP and approximately 11% of direct & indirect taxes. Majority of these Tourists come between October and

We have vaccinated over 350 million people and they should be allowed to travel internationally. March therefore we should not miss this season. Hospitality & Tourism industry employs about 58 million people directly and about 75 million people indirectly in India. About 10 million people have either lost their jobs or are on leave without pay. While domestic tourism is helping a few hotels but people like Govt. recognized Tourist Guides, Tourist Transport Operators, Tourist Taxi Drivers pan India and small Tour Operators and Vendors are starving.

The whole world is opening up for people who have received both the vaccination or have tested negative. Some of the countries who are already allowing scheduled international flights are:Switzerland, UK, Russia, Turkey, Sweden, Maldives, Mauritius, Armenia, Ukraine, Ethiopia, South Africa, Egypt, Serbia, Kenya, Uzbekistan, Dubai, Phuket, Montenegro, Zambia and Rwanda.

Kenya launches revised protocols for ‘New Normal’ News Desk

T

ourism & Wildlife Cabinet Secretary, Najib Balala has launched the revised Magical Kenya Tourism and Travel Health and Safety Protocols for the ‘New Normal’. “With the majority of the people embracing the Covid-19 vaccines worldwide, we deem it important to issue a comprehensive Covid-19 vaccination policy and procedures for both guests and staff at all levels of establishments’ operations. That’s why we are launching the reviewed protocols that were first issued in July 2020,” said CS Balala. The CS also added that countries with the highest numbers of individuals that are vaccinated against Covid will be the ones receiving the highest numbers of tourists as people

will find the destinations to be safe and healthy. “Hospitality workers can also be considered to be frontline workers as they engage with visitors on a personal level. That is why we are urging our hospitality stakeholders to get vaccinated whenever they get the chance. On our part, we shall be liaising with CECs of Tourism and Health at County levels so that the stakeholders can be vaccinated,” added Balala. The CS also advocated for selfregulating since there has been a lot of confusion when it comes to hospitality establishments. Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA) has been assigned the task of being the lead, while working closely with other multi-agencies that are in the hospitality industry.

“We are aware that most regulated establishments have put in place measures to comply with Covid-19 protocols, and we commend them for that. However, there is a general laxity in full compliance especially when it comes to social distancing. Also, there are

those that are not following or are trying to circumvent the laid down protocols. We want to tell them their days are numbered and that the long arm of the law will soon catch up with them,” noted Balala.

Keeping destination partners on top of travellers’ mind first & foremost priority, COO Think Strawberries We are carefully identifying and exploring all possible avenues we would need to leverage to strategically position and build recall for our partners, says Munnmunn Marwah, Chief Operating Officer, Think Strawberries in an exclusive conversation with Whereabouts. Read more. News Desk

Amidst the ongoing war with the Covid-19 pandemic most of the companies have adopted ‘New Normal’ followed by various technologies & tools; what’s new at Think Strawberries? Is there any change in your operational strategies? Resilience, agility and innovation have been our stepping-stones through the last 15 months. Digitalizing our journey through these times has been key, but at the same time, we have stuck by our time-tested personalized approach and remained continuously in touch with our trade and media partners through virtual roadshows, webinars and tele-calling. Customer sentiment was being closely mapped to ensure we were sharing time-appropriate messages relevant to the changing environment. To make sure that there were no operational challenges and our workflow continues in seamless manner and teams embrace a remote working culture, we introduced tech tools quite early into the lockdown to enable scheduling, reporting and monitoring systems. Even before the government announced the lockdown we had a strong CRM system which helped us stay connected with our teams and clients. We are capitalising on increasing digitalisation and building a stronger and resourceefficient future.

Would you like to draw attention to your short term plans as a Destination Management Company? Our number one priority and the immediate plan is to ascertain that our destination partners remain on top of travellers’ minds when its time to travel again. The travel decision journey is cut across awareness, consideration and decision and we are ensuring that we are present at each of these stages, presenting the right messaging to the right consumer segment at the right time.

Seeing the upward trend in travel demand it is imminent that travellers will be spoilt for choice when restrictions fully ease and we want to ensure our client destinations are the first choice when travel decisions are being made. We are carefully identifying and exploring all possible avenues we would need to leverage to strategically position and build recall for our various partners.

As you are aware that most of the countries including India have gone through the second wave of Covid-19 and gradually moving towards normalcy (by following all Covid norms to avoid the expected third wave) how do you look at the international touristic activities? By now the initial fear we faced when the virus first emerged has transformed into a mindset of acceptance and rationalization. We now know a great deal about the virus therefore the fear factor is more controlled. Guidelines and safety protocols have been established and that has been a huge contributor towards keeping contagion in check. Along with countries ensuring safety of the travellers, I feel it is equally important for people to be careful and follow all safety guidelines. Additionally, it is also extremely important to strengthen cooperation within and between countries to rebuild tourism and restore international touristic activities.

Would you like to elaborate on the current situation of the destinations represented by your esteemed organisation? How many of them are ready to receive international travellers? What is the status of airline operations? And, what would be your strategies to market/promote such destinations?

Munnmunn Marwah Chief Operating Officer Think Strawberries

which India registered as its number one source market last year. After South Asian countries witnessed the second wave some time back, a ban was imposed. However, the Maldivian government has reopened the country for Indian travellers starting 15th July 2021following an aggressive campaign named ‘I’m Vaccinated’ that encourages the vaccination of all staff members in the archipelago. Similarly, our other clients are also gearing up for revival with UAE opening up to Indians this month and other countries planning to follow suit. It’s an exciting time and we are within very close reach of a massive surge in travel demand. We are currently in the process of putting a method to this madness when it unfolds!

The tourism sector is quickly pickingup and destinations are increasingly welcoming tourists from India now that Covid positivity numbers in the country have significantly declined. One of our popular client destinations, Maldives, was among the first countries to open its borders for international tourists in July 2020 following

‘Hotels in the Hills Have Benefitted the Most during the Pandemic’: GM, Welcomhotel Tavleen Chail Neha Kirpal

O

n the 17th of May, the Welcomhotel Tavleen Chail opened. The sixacre resort, which is owned by Tavleen Resorts & Spa Pvt Ltd and operated by ITC Limited, currently has a total of 47 keys in the main block (30 deluxe rooms, 16 superior rooms and 1 luxury suite). By end of July, the hotel will add another 18 cottages. The former summer capital of the princely state of Patiala, Chail is located 37 kms from Shimla via Kufri. With Welcomhotel Shimla having opened in December 2020 as well as another upcoming one in Narkanda in 2022, ITC plans to create a complete circuit in Himachal. We spoke to Welcomhotel Tavleen Chail’s General Manager, Rajneesh Maller, among other things about the hotel’s unique features, its special promotions/offers, the response it has received so far and plans for its future. What are some of the hotel’s unique features that set it apart from competition? Undoubtedly, the hotel’s pristine location is unparalleled. Located at a height of 7,200 feet, it is situated in the periphery of the tranquil Chail Wildlife Sanctuary. Thus, its view of the protected forest will remain so forever.

Wellness and rejuvenation forms a unique part of what we offer. The other part is adventure - there are several trails on premises due to the serene nature around us. Paragliding is available about 10 kilometres from here, and we have also tied up with an agency that will organise activities such as off roading and dirt track cycling. Apart from this, we offer morning yoga sessions with an instructor, a meditation centre within the premises, and indoor and outdoor play areas for children. For adults, there is a billiards room, carom, card room and library. So, we endeavour to engage people across age groups and demographics. Apart from this, we have a spa with four treatment rooms (including a couple treatment room), a temperature-controlled pool and a well-equipped gymnasium. What has been the response you have received ever since the hotel opened? As a new hotel, we were well received by the market. The response has been overwhelming, due to the second wave settling down, the resurrection of travel and entry restrictions into the state being eased. Our guests are well occupied and engaged, with an average length of stay of about three to four nights. In June, we exceeded our initial budget. Did the pandemic affect you in any way? What special promotions did you offer?

Rajneesh Maller General Manager Welcomhotel Tavleen Chail

Hotels in the hills have benefitted the most, in terms of both occupancy and yield (or average room rates), during the pandemic. We had an introductory offer for the first 15 days, in which there were special rates, and we gave a meal credit of Rs 1,000. At the moment, we are offering all-in-getaway packages, which include room tariff and all meals. With the upcoming monsoon, we will be offering more such value-based offers which would help drive volumes. What are the hotel’s plans for the future? In the long-term, we are looking to make this a wholistic destination (with a minimum stay of four to five nights), offering enriching experiences through a combination of gastronomy, wellness, adventure and leisure.

I am excited by the opening of the current center in Ethiopia and thank my colleagues in Ethiopian Airlines for the trust they have put
